The artisans of the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d'Arts took one of their best-known models as a starting point. Its off-centered hours-and-minutes dial opens the way for all manner of daring creative ingenuity. Here, they have surpassed themselves, drawing on motifs from traditional Asian iconography to create a landscape imbued with serene refinement. The carp is revered in Asia as an allegorical symbol to represent love, perseverance, longevity and virility. Small groups of this highly-prized fish are often used to embellish ornamental ponds in the spirit of refinement and attention to detail that are characteristic of Chinese and Japanese aesthetics.

Such a scene has been minutely reproduced at a scale of 41 mm, with the dial set over a tranquil pond of crystalline waters created through subtle layering of translucent blue enamel. Two lily pads float gracefully on the surface, crowned by a blooming lotus applied in relief, and hand-engraved gold reed stems rise from the waters.

Under the enamel, three elegant koi carp glide along in a spontaneous underwater ballet, standing out against the background of wave-ridged gold. The enamel lightens across the upper half of the watch face in gradually shaded colors underscored by an engraving of sky and birds. Here for the first time, Jaquet Droz presents an enameled balance weight decorated with a carp hand-engraved in bas-relief.

IWC Schaffhausen sends the new Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Edition “Le Petit Prince”, complete with an innovative jumping star display for the day of the week, off on a journey. 

Every day, one of seven stars in the inner circle of the dial lights up in gold to symbolize the visit of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s little prince to a different planet. The same seven stars are also engraved as a decoration on the back of the watch and include the name of the inhabitant with whom the little prince is currently passing the time.

A king who rules over a fictitious realm, a businessman who believes he owns the stars, a geographer who never leaves his desk: having abandoned his own tiny asteroid in search of a friend, the little prince meets various inhabitants of other planets who lead strange lives. IWC Schaffhausen has taken this journey through the universe from Antoine de Saint-Exupérys “The Little Prince” as a reason to crown the new Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Edition “Le Petit Prince” (Ref. IW371807) with an enchanting mechanism. “Our partnership with the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation has already inspired us to create many Pilot’s Watch special editions,” says Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. “And since the tale of ‘The Little Prince’ celebrated its 70th birthday two years ago, we’ve also dedicated a number of models to the title figure. This latest version not only has an impressive split-seconds mechanism but also a rather whimsical star element that might not be noticed at first glance.”

STARRY NIGHTS AND DAYS

The midnight blue dial with its characteristic cockpit design has a surprising feature: a jumping star display is arranged inside the faint line of the circle at its centre. Each day of the week, this captivating day display lights up a different star in glittering gold. However, the change does not take place in any particular order: the gleaming golden star appears to jump at random between the seven different positions on the dial. The stars punched out on the dial symbolize the planets visited by the little prince. They are also engraved in the same order on the back of the watch, together with the name of their inhabitants: the king, the vain man, the drunkard, the businessman, the lamplighter, the geographer and finally the rose.

The little prince cannot forget the latter and returns to her at the end of his odyssey. We also find a playful indication of where the little boy with the wheaten hair happens to be at the moment, as well as a portrait of the prince himself, on the reverse side of the case. Incidentally, the owner of the watch decides which star on the dial is illuminated on which day of the week by using the crown to make the golden star jump to another position.

DOUBLE CHRONOGRAPH READY FOR TAKE-OFF

The sophisticated chronograph split-seconds hand complication is now licensed to fly in the Pilot’s Watch special edition “Le Petit Prince”. Also known as a double chronograph, this mechanism presents watchmakers with a challenge that is often underestimated. It has two stopwatch seconds hands mounted one on top of the other which allow the owner to reliably record intermediate times, even within the same minute. The Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Edition “Le Petit Prince” is a fascinating variant that combines all the features of a watch designed for flying with an additional poetic element. Its functions include automatic winding, the time of day, date, weekday in the form of a jumping star display, small hacking seconds, chronograph with aggregate time recording up to 12 hours, split-seconds function, sapphire glass with antireflective coating on both sides which is secured against drops in pressure, as well as the soft-iron inner case found in IWC’s Pilot’s Watches as protection against magnetic fields.

IWC AND THE LITTLE PRINCE

Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen has once again been inspired to produce a special edition by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s little prince. The first such model dates back to 2013, when the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince” (Ref. IW502802) and the Pilot’s Watch Mark XVII Edition “Le Petit Prince” (Ref. IW326506) were launched in honour of the 70th anniversary of this world-famous story. With these, IWC paid tribute to one of the best-selling books in literary history, written by legendary writer, pilot and adventurer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Since 2006, the company has maintained a cordial partnership with Saint-Exupéry’s heirs and their charitable organization, the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation. One unique example of the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince” (Ref. IW502801) in platinum was auctioned by Sotheby’s in Geneva. IWC presented the Foundation with the record sum of CHF 173,000 to help finance the building of a school with library in Cambodia. The series of special limited editions of “Le Petit Prince” continued in 2014 with the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Le Petit Prince” (Ref. IW377706) and the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Le Petit Prince” (Ref. IW500908). Only recently, brand ambassador Adriana Lima opened a new library in the Hospital Pequeno Príncipe, a children’s hospital in Curitiba, Brazil. The library was made possible by the proceeds of an auction of a Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “The Last Flight” in platinum (Ref. IW388005), with which IWC honoured the great writer’s last flight.

Both machines feature a sleek black exterior with neon lime accents. The manual-wind, Calibre ARM09-S timepiece is black PVD-coated stainless steel with an 8-day power reserve. The stitching on its carbon strap is also bright lime.
Their Tech Art GP Street R Cabrioler, which is based on a Porsche 997 Turbo, is blazoned with ARMIN STROM Team 78 and Gumball 3000 logos. The number 78 was chosen because it's the year both men, who will split driving duties, were born.

The heart of the Senator Cosmopolite is the new Calibre 89-02 automatic movement. Its exceptional mechanics are set in motion when the traveller wishes to change the destination time. If heading east (forwards in time), he turns the crown at 4 o’clock clockwise until the IATA code representing the destination time zone appears in the relevant DST or STD window.

If travelling west (back in time), the traveller turns the crown counter-clockwise. In both cases, the central hour and minute hands jump ahead (or back) in 15-minute intervals until the destination time zone’s IATA code appears in the relevant DST or STD window.

At this point, the traveller need make no further changes: the central hour and minute hands now indicate the correct time at destination, augmented by the correct day/night indication at 9 o’clock – and by the correct display of the date at destination. If the time at the chosen destination is ahead or back a day, the Panorama Date display changes accordingly. Thus the new Calibre 89-02 transforms its spectacular mechanical complexity into compelling simplicity of use: a masterpiece of fine German watchmaking from Glashütte Original.

The 89-02 operates at 4 Hz (28,800 A/h) and features an off-centre rotor. The oscillation system is regulated by using four gold screws on the balance rim; the absence of a regulator on the spring allows the movement to run continuously over a much longer period of time, resulting in increased precision. The Calibre 89-02 is comprised of over 400 individual components.

The OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M ETNZ has a black ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel with a polished diving scale whose indications have been created in relief using laser ablation. There is a dot at the top of the bezel at 12 o’clock which is coated with white Super-LumiNova and emits a green light.

The sand-blasted grade 5 titanium dial has applied indexes coated with white Super-LumiNova that emits a blue light. A silvery chronograph seconds track can be found on the outer edge of the dial; inside this ring is a matt titanium minute track. There are three sub-dials on the dial: a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour recorder at 6 o’clock and a 30-minute recorder at 3 o’clock which also indicates the five-minute countdown to the start of a regatta.

The 44 mm brushed grade 5 titanium case has pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock that stand out with a red aluminium ring and matt black ceramic ring respectively. In fact, all of the elements that correspond to a chronograph function are coloured in red. There is also a helium escape valve with an integrated date corrector at 10 o’clock on the case.

The Seamaster Diver 300M ETNZ is presented on a rubber strap with a foldover clasp. The top part of the strap is black and has a subtle ribbed pattern, while the underside of the strap is red and has a design that is reminiscent of the sails on the team’s boat. This pattern ensures that water and air can pass freely underneath allowing the skin to breath.

Embossed on the screw-in caseback is the ETNZ logo – a special detail that establishes this timepiece’s connection to the world of sailing and underscores OMEGA’s support of the remarkable team. Protected by the caseback is the Co-Axial calibre 3330, a chronograph movement complete with an Si14 silicon balance spring.

Emirates Team New Zealand and OMEGA
OMEGA is proud of the partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand that started with Sir Peter Blake's American's Cup campaign in 1995. The team handily won the Cup, a feat it would repeat in 2000. When Sir Peter retired from professional sailing after that campaign, OMEGA continued to support him as one of the main sponsors of his Blakexpeditions project until his untimely death in 2001. In 2010, F1 legend and Audemars Piguet ambassador Michael Schumacher posed an apparently simple question to the engineers at Audemars Piguet: would it be possible to create a mechanical wrist watch designed specifically for use in motorsport which would make it possible to measure and record an extended series of consecutive lap times?

It was a horological challenge that had never before been met in a mechanical watch, and one that was inspired by motor racing's very specific requirement to be able to time and compare multiple, consecutive laps - a task which has traditionally been carried out using a bank of two or more stop watches arranged in series.

Now, after almost five years of development, Audemars Piguet can claim to have conquered that challenge. It is the first motorsport-specific watch to feature a complication imagined by the celebrated driver, with two angular indexing systems on a single chronograph, each with an independent memory.  It is also the first time that a movement has been developed from scratch at the behest of an ambassador by Audemars Piguet – an indication of the strength of the long-standing relationship which the Manufacture has enjoyed with Michael Schumacher since 2010.

The timepiece features a single chronograph driving two central hands which can be controlled independently via three pushpieces - the first sited at the conventional two o’clock position to start and stop the chronograph; the second sited at the four o’clock position to re-set the chronograph, and the all-important third pushpiece sited at the nine o’clock position.

This third pushpiece makes it possible to simultaneously stop either of the two chronograph hands, while returning the other hand to zero and restarting it - meaning that, while the time of the most recent lap is being noted down, timing of the next lap is already underway.

The watch therefore negates the need for two or more hand-held timing devices, streamlining the operation within a single wrist chronograph.

Alternatively, the watch can keep a certain lap time as reference, stopping one hand with the laptimer button, and using the flyback function on the other chronograph hand with the pusher at 4 o’clock to restart the measurement of each new lap.

Finally, the timepiece can be used as a “standard” flyback chronograph with both hands running together in parallel.

The Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher is the world’s first mechanical chronograph with alternating consecutive lap timing and flyback function, specifically designed and engineered for continuous action and relentless precision in timing laps on the racetrack.

It will be the second Audemars Piguet chronograph to carry the name of the celebrated driver, and in honour of his extraordinary career, the Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher will be made available in a strictly limited edition of 221 examples in recognition of the number of F1 World Championship point-winning races in which he competed.
