A flying tourbillon shines amid an aventurine sky, adorned by a gem-studded rainbow to make up the ultra-thin Tonda 1950 Moonbow, a new timepiece presented by
Parmigiani Fleurier.

« Whoever learns to observe acquires art. » These words, taught to young Michel Parmigiani by his father, summarize the philosophy of the Parmigiani Fleurier manufacture. The Tonda 1950 Moonbow draws inspiration from two phenomena only apparent to a careful observer and re-imagines a lunar rainbow, or moonbow, on the bezel and a spiral galaxy on the dial.

Its flying tourbillon is reminiscent of a spiral galaxy and dances amid celestial beings on an aventurine sky, carefully placed at seven o’clock, a nod to Michel Parmigiani’s birth on December 2, 1950 at 7:08 am. The development of an ultra-thin tourbillon movement is a challenge for any watchmaker.

Parmigiani Fleurier found a solution by integrating a platinum micro-rotor into the plate of the movement, resulting in a caliber only 3.4 mm thick. In addition, it is hand-finished with the most admirable decorations in the brand’s manufacture.

This magnificent example of mechanical engineering is further highlighted by a bezel featuring a colorful array of precious stones representing a moonbow, a nocturnal weather phenomenon rarely seen. Incredible care went into the selection of the finest stones, each in the perfect hue, to offer a truly gradient rainbow, with subtle changes in between colors.

The meticulous art of setting them required dozens of hours of painstaking and precise craftsmanship. Blue, pink, orange and yellow sapphires, rubies, tsavorites, and amethysts make up the 40 baguette-cut gemstones seen on the bezel and weighing 2.59 carats.

When Michel Parmigiani founded his restoration workshop in 1976, he did not imagine that, 20 years later, it would be at the heart of a watch brand bearing his name. Parmigiani Fleurier’s achievements continuously inspired by lessons of the past, and offer new solutions to historical, technical challenges.

The restoration of a songbird cage, with fountain and flute sets, dating from the early 19th century, is a great example. The cage is suspended in the air by a clock on its base and features a dial that can only be seen from below. According to historical records, aventurine glass was once used to decorate the panels of this clock but went missing in the past and was replaced by blue metallic paint.

As a result, and in order to avoid similar damage in the future, Michel Parmigiani decided to use this beautiful material for its dials only. The sapphire crystal acts as its keeper and protector.

The Tonda 1950 Moonbow is available with a red, blue or gold Hermès leather strap.

KUDOKE 2 – Nocturne Limited Edition

KUDOKEHANDwerk 2Nocturne Day or Night – Limited Edition - 2020

After the incredible success of the award-winning watch KUDOKE 2 pre-sented last year, Stefan Kudoke now introduces an enchanting limited edi-tion of this model in 2020.

While the original KUDOKE 2 shines with a silver-white dial, this year‘s limited edition is grounded in a new galvano-anthracite dial that evokes the night sky of the extraordinary 24-hour display at 12 o‘clock. This watch face changes dramatically from light grey to black and white, depending on lighting conditions.

The hand-engraved, domed sky disc is galvanically treated in an elaborate process with the colors of yellow gold and black and white rhodium. Polished hands together with applied rhodium-plated chapter rings form the frame that is at once contrasting and consonant with the nocturnal tones of this very special piece in the KUDOKE HANDwerk line.

The surprises continue to the caseback where a new version of the manu-al winding KALIBER 1-24h movement hearkens the nighttime theme. The hand-finished movement is presented in white rhodium, a stark inversion of the standard caliber traditionally fi nished in yellow gold. The balance bridge, also finished in white rhodium, bears the quintessential infinity mark of the HANDwerk series, but on a background that is hand-hamme-red and hand-finished.

Matching the year, only 20 pieces of this special watch are available world-wide. The limited edition model is priced at 8,665 EUR (excl. VAT) as is the ori-ginal KUDOKE 2 .

KALBER 1

Based on KALIBER 1, Stefan Kudoke developed and executed a modification on the dial side of the movement, facilitating a 24-hour indication at 12 o’clock. As for the first model, the hand finished movement - KALIBER 1 in version 24H – is visible through the glass bottom of the case.

At the front the eye is caught immediately by the rotating domed sky disk. Handengraved and electroplated in three colors it demonstrates the familiar creativity of Stefan Kudoke. A small gold-plated triangle indicates the hour of day or night. But even if you can only take a quick glance at the watch, the upper half of the 24-hour-indication shows intuitively the currrent day or night time:

Valuable impulses were provided by the old Masters – in particular those of the German-English traditional handcraft of precision watchmaking.

„During the development of Kaliber 1 I got inspired by the design of historical English pocket watches whose use of forms I deliberately incorporated into my movement. Ages ago I bought an old English pocket watch movement, that lay unused in a drawer for a long time. One day it fell
into my hands again – just as the idea of an own movement began to take shape.

As with his skeleton models, Stefan Kudoke sets great value upon the refinement of the watch components by hand. Be it the polishing of edges at bridges or steel parts, the engravings or the surface treatment of the wheel bridge using a special reaming technology – all steps during the finishing process are carried out by hand exclusively.

Stefan Kudoke

„More than 15 years ago, I said to my wife, 'I have a crazy idea: I will manufacture my own wat-ches!'“ At that time, Stefan Kudoke was a student who already had finished his master-watchmaker's degree and had worked at renowned brands like Glashütte Original, Breguet, and Blancpain be-fore.

With the founding of his eponymous brand in 2008, Stefan pursued his dream full-time and made a name for himself as a creator of exceptionally artistic hand-skeletonized and hand-engraved timepieces among his KUNSTwerk collection. Of the emergence of his second collection, the HANDwerk line, Stefan explained, "After more than 10 years, I refined my skeletonizing skills to their utmost, and I found myself in a position where I wanted to develop my watchmaking skills further. To use old techniques and keep the practical know-how of traditional watchmaking alive has always been very important to me." And he brought this to fruition with the first two models of his new collection: KUDOKE 1 & 2.

With his first own movement, Stefan has fulfilled his dream. Valuable lessons were drawn from the old masters, specifically those of the German-English traditional handcraft of precision watchma-king. "During the development of the Kaliber 1, I was inspired by the design of historical English pocket watches whose use of forms I incorporated into my movement. Ages ago I bought an old English pocket watch movement that lay unused in a drawer for a long time. One day it fell into my hands again, just as the idea of Kaliber 1 began to take shape."

Be it the polishing of edges at bridges or steel parts, the engravings or the surface treatment of the wheel bridge using a special grinding technology – all steps during the finishing process are carried out by hand exclusively. This is how handcrafted pieces of art are created - in small volumes and with great care and attention to detail.
