Patek Philippe – World Time Watch Ref. 5230

PATEK PHILIPPE Complications World Time Watch Ref. 5230 Gold 20th Anniversary

A grand tradition totally up to date

The Patek Philippe World Time watch, also referred to as Heure Universelle by collectors, has ranked
among the manufacture's most popular complicated wristwatches for nearly eighty years. Because
some time zone designations have recently changed or were replaced with new ones, Baselworld is
the ideal platform for Patek Philippe to present the new World Time watch Ref. 5230, which is
replacing all previous models. The changes were a welcome opportunity to subtly rework the case,
dial, and hand designs as well.

It may seem simple to divide the planet into 24 time zones with 15 degrees of longitude each, but the
political process behind it is convoluted. Some time zones have meanwhile been assigned different city names, for instance Dubai instead of Riyadh or Brisbane instead of Noumea, to mention only two. Formerly, Moscow was located in the UTC+4 zone, but the Russian capital has now shifted one hour closer to Western Europe, "relocating" to UTC+3.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                         BIG FOTO

From time to time, such changes make it necessary to modify the place names on the city scales of World Time watches. This is why Patek Philippe is discontinuing the production of its legacy World Time watches and launching the new Ref. 5230 with the updated, globally valid city names.

A new design for a new world time

For Patek Philippe, this was also an ideal cue for reworking the appearance of the World Time watch, subtly retouching details to give it a truly contemporary and distinctive personality. As regards the Calatrava case of the new Ref. 5230 in white or rose gold 5N, changes were applied among others to the winglet-style lugs and the narrow, smoothly polished bezel that attractively sets the watch apart from its predecessors. The hand shapes have been given a new look as well: Instead of the venerable ringed hour hand and Dauphine minute hand, the Ref. 5230 now sports a pierced hour hand with a silhouette that evokes the famous "Southern Cross" constellation, and the minute hand features a lozenge-shaped contour. Both hands have a sharp center ridge between the carefully lapped, beveled flanks. Like the applied baton hour markers, they are crafted from 18K white or rose gold 5N to match the case.

The center for rare handcrafts

This title is deliberately ambiguous. It refers to the Patek Philippe manufacture which since it was
founded in 1839 has always been an important center for the pinnacle in decorative handcrafts as well.
Then, it also means the centers of World Time watch dials that are perfect stages for traditional forms
of craftsmanship. Patek Philippe World Time watches decorated with polychrome cloisonné enamel
maps on their dials are nothing short of legendary. The centers of other World Time watches feature
hand-guilloched decors, like the black dial center of the new Ref. 5230 with its filigreed woven pattern.
The inspiration for this guilloched basket weave motif was taken from a precious pocket watch on
display at the Patek Philippe Museum, except that its guilloché was originally coated with blue flinqué
enamel. Patek Philippe still masters these nearly extinct handcrafts because the manufacture carefully
preserves the required skills and know-how and assures that they are handed down from one
generation to the next. This also applies to the equipment. For example, the manually controlled rose
engine needed to guilloche dials is almost one hundred years old. But it has been constantly serviced
and works as reliably today as when it was first commissioned.

The watch for frequent travelers

World Time watches are more important than ever in our globally networked lives. We fly around the
globe, have online conversations with people all over the world, pursue international trade relations,
and share ideas on a worldwide scale. So it's good to know the time in the places to which we are
traveling or where people live with whom we communicate. Patek Philippe World Time watches fulfill
this function in an exemplary way: They show all 24 world time zones at a glance. The local time is
most prominently displayed for the time zone whose assigned city name is just above the small red
arrow at 12 o'clock – in the classic manner with the hour and minute hands. In the other 23 zones, the
times are directly readable on the 24-hour ring that rotates counterclockwise within the city disk. The
minutes indicated by the minute hand are the same for all time zones.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                         BIG FOTO

We owe this ingenious functionality to an invention in the 1930s by Genevan watchmaker Louis Cottier.
The mechanism was later refined and patented by Patek Philippe. When traveling into a different time
zone, the pusher in the case at 10 o'clock is pressed as often as needed to align the respective city
name with the red arrow at 12 o'clock.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                         BIG FOTO

Each time the pusher is pressed, the hour hand will advance by one hour while the city disk and the 24-hour ring will move by one increment in the counterclockwise direction. During this process, the time-zone mechanism is uncoupled from the movement so that the accurate progression of the minute hand and the amplitude of the balance remain unaffected. Consequently, the time in all 24 zones is always displayed with the precision specified by the directives of the Patek Philippe Seal.

Heritage in precision

The precise rate of the watch and the user-friendliness of the World Time functions are guaranteed by
the Patek Philippe manufacture caliber 240 HU – an ultra-thin self-winding mechanical movement that
wrote horological history. Despite its elaborate time-zone automatic winding mechanisms, it is a mere
3.88 mm thick, ideal for a slender, elegant World Time watch. Thanks to a design patented in 1977, the
size of the winding rotor was massively reduced, allowing it to be fully integrated into the level of the
movement bridges. Even though it is so compact, the rotor can still generate ample winding power
because it is crafted from solid 22K gold to increase its mass and torque. In the course of the years,
the movement was continually optimized and paired with a World Time mechanism.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                         BIG FOTO

It is decidedly modern, as evidenced by its patented Spiromax® balance spring. It has a power reserve of at least 48 hours, and with a tolerance of -3 to +2 seconds per day, its rate accuracy exceeds all customary chronometer standards. The finissage of the watch fully complies with all requirements of the Patek Philippe Seal. The bridges are chamfered and decorated with Geneva striping. The gold mini-rotor has the same striping alongside an engraving of the Calatrava cross, the manufacture's emblem. The plate is hand-decorated with perlage, and the golden brass wheels are countersunk and have chamfered spokes. These accents are complemented with the gold-filled movement engravings on the rhodiumed bridges and the sparkling highlights of 10 of the 35 ruby jewels. With the new Patek Philippe World Time watch Ref. 5230, the beautiful craftsmanship can be admired through the sapphire-crystal case
back.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                         BIG FOTO

The new Ref. 5230 replaces all previous models of the manufacture's World Time range and is
available in two versions: as the Ref. 5230R in 18K rose gold and as the Ref. 5230G in 18K white gold.
Both have the same dial with a white city disk, a 24-hour ring with day/night color segments and
sun/moon symbols, as well as a black center with an elaborate, hand-guilloched basket weave pattern.
The only differences are the applied hour markers and the hands, which are made of the same 18K
gold as the case. Both versions are worn on a hand-stitched alligator strap with large square scales
and a Calatrava fold-over clasp. The strap is shiny black with an 18K white-gold clasp for the white-
gold model and shiny chocolate brown with an 18K rose-gold clasp for the rose-gold model.

Geneva, 2016 – The brand GRECO Genève once again transcends the limits of artistic excellence and performance. By integrating an innovative use of fluorescence into the LTM 22T model of its Les Temps Modernes collection, the brand known for its stylized Hexagonal Nut-design watch plays on the contrast between industrial and futuristic elements.

To confer fluorescence on this timepiece, Stéphane GRECO has applied an ingenious process using a highly-regulated substance: fluorescent pigments, chemical compounds used in the making of banknotes and which are detectable only under UV light. The use of these pigments, subject to extraordinarily strict quotas, transforms the watch itself into something precious and rare. Thanks to this unique process, the collection “Les Temps Modernes” continues to astonish through its uninhibited sense of elegant avant-garde design melding sport, technology and perfectly detailed aesthetics.

AUDEMARS PIGUET – Universelle Vintage pocket watch

THE AUDEMARS PIGUET MUSEUM
ACQUIRES A PRIVATE COLLECTION OF
MASTERPIECES

The Audemars Piguet Museum has recently acquired the Time Products vintage watch collection of Audemars Piguet timepieces. This is the most significant private collection of Audemars Piguet vintage watches worldwide and it was put together over 27 years by Marcus Margulies. The widely diverse creations have been meticulously selected and curated over time before returning home to Le Brassus this year.

Spanning from the 1890s through the 1990s, the collection features extremely rare examples from every category of collectible vintage Audemars Piguet watches: complicated pocket watches, time only wristwatches with exotic case and dial designs, unique calendar wristwatches with phases of the moon, world-time wristwatches, influential jump hour wristwatches, and exceptional chronograph and minute repeating wristwatches.

The Universelle

Among this inspiring collection is the renowned ultra-complicated pocket watch no 6142, called the “Universelle”. Louis Elisée Piguet first worked on the ebauche and then Audemars Piguet finished the movement and delivered it in 1899 to the company Union Glashutte in Dresden who cased, signed and sold the watch. This masterpiece, one of the most complicated watches of its time, includes 1168 movement parts and features the following: perpetual calendar, minute repeater with carillon, Grande & Petite Sonnerie, split second chronograph, flying 1/5ths of a second with reset system, dead beat seconds and alarm mechanism. This exceptional work of engineering, technology and watchmaking artisanship will be at the heart of the current and future Audemars Piguet Museum.

The Universelle Dial

In addition to being on view at the Museum in Le Brassus and in the future Maison des Fondateurs, highlights from this collection will be part of traveling exhibitions and future publications throughout the world.

Jasmine Audemars, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors, said: «This acquisition is the most important in the history of the Audemars Piguet Heritage collection thanks to the incredible quality of the pieces representing a high concentration of major historical achievements for the brand.”

François-Henry Bennahmias, Chief Executive Officer of Audemars Piguet, added: “We are delighted to welcome these vintage pieces back home. It represents a great milestone for the heritage department and a huge contribution to our patrimony. Marcus Margulies is very happy, as he has always believed that the right home for the Collection was with the factory in Le Brassus.”

To break the rules you must first master them.

-------------------------------------------------------
About the Audemars Piguet Museum

Audemars Piguet, the only fine watchmaking brand still in the hands of its founding families, inaugurated its first Museum in 1992 in the original Audemars family home next to the tourbillon workshop, before expanding it to the entire building in 2004. The collection spans 250 years of history. The Audemars Piguet Museum provides research, certification, as well as restoration and conservation for historic Audemars Piguet watches to collectors and auction houses. In 2014, Audemars Piguet selected the BIG architectural firm to extend its historic building and create the new building of its museum, the "Maison des Fondateurs", which will relate the story of Audemars Piguet through a dynamic interweaving of past and present. The opening of the new Maison des Fondateurs is planned for 2018.

CONCORD – Impresario Lady in Black MOP Dial

CONCORDImpresario Lady in Black MOP Dial NEW

Concord unveils two new timepieces in their Impresario Lady range, that continue to set new high points in styling and design while paying tribute to clear-sighted women who are an inspiration to others: leaders, visionaries and entrepreneurs.

First introduced in 1998, the Impresario line has made a proud comeback this year with new models for men and women. This new range preserves Concord’s rich heritage of watchmaking, with a decidedly contemporary touch, thus deftly combining tradition and history with modernity.

The dainty 32 mm size is just right for the wrist of a lady and the watches stand apart with their unique coin-edged finish. The two new models come with a black mother of pearl dial and are offered in stainless steel and stainless steel laced with rose gold casings.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ..                   BIG FOTO

The roundness of the cases is pleasingly offset by gently undulating stainless steel bracelets. The lustrous black mother of pearl dial sets off the slim line Arabic numerals and indexes plated in Rhodium or Rose Gold quite nicely, while at the same time raising magical visions of the night sky set out in star-spangled splendour.

A total of 48 sparkling diamonds on the dial and 96 on the bracelet seal the deal for elegance, reminiscent of the woman of the world setting out to conquer new horizons. This is truly a watch made for the svelte urbanite, a lady all set to sparkle in the bright lights of the city's chic night spots.

The new Concord Impresario’s clean, contemporary good looks are complemented by stainless steel crowns. In harmony with Concord’s keen awareness of the needs of modern day leaders, driven by a concern to achieve and enable a sustainable work/life balance, the Impresario is water-resistant to 50 meters and powered by an ultra-reliable Swiss quality quartz movement.

ORIS – Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme

ORIS Motor Sport Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme NEW
Light speed
Oris uses new technology for its first
lightweight carbon fibre watch

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...             BIG FOTO

Oris is proud to announce one of the most innovative, technically advanced watches in the company’s history – the Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme. It is made using an Oris-patented manufacturing technique never before seen in watchmaking.

The watch’s case is made of carbon fibre and titanium, but not just any carbon fibre. Oris has developed and patented a carbon fibre manufacturing technique derived from processes used by Oris’s long-standing Formula 1 partner Williams and never before seen in watchmaking.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...             BIG FOTO

Oris’s technique has been designed to exploit the full potential of carbon fibre, and it delivers three key benefits. The first two are rigidity and water-tightness. In most carbon fibre watches, these can only be achieved by adding in extra components such as metal reinforcements or a metal ‘containers’, but Oris’s solution bypasses the need for these. The third is in post-production. Processing carbon fibre after it has been moulded and hardened is labour-intensive and costly, but the Oris technique overcomes this.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...             BIG FOTO

To make this unique, high-performance carbon fibre composite, sheets of woven carbon fibre reinforced polymer are layered manually in individual moulds in two steps and then twice hardened under five bar of pressure at 130°C in special ovens. The use of fibre waves rather than shreds ensures the material is solid, with no hollow spaces. Each watch-case middle part is individually made by hand.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...             BIG FOTO

The process is so sophisticated that it delivers a completed case shape and finished surface. The titanium case back and sapphire crystal can be mounted straight onto it, without further machining, special gaskets or ‘containers’. In fact, the only additional processes required are to mill off any redundant material, and to mill the holes for the crown, chronograph pushers and the bracelet.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...             BIG FOTO

Oris has developed this material using knowledge shared with the Williams Formula 1 team, with whom it first partnered in 2003. Carbon fibre polymers are used wherever a high strength-to weight ratio is required, as in a racing car’s monocoque or steering wheel. It is five times lighter and twice as stable as stainless steel. Oris has used it in the middle part of the Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme multi-piece case. The part weighs just 7.2 grams.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...             BIG FOTO

Completing the Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme case are polished, black-DLC-coated titanium elements, including the bezel, crown, push buttons and screw-down case back. The watch is fuelled by Oris Calibre 674, a modified version of ETA’s ultra-reliable 7750 calibre. This gives it three counters, one for small seconds, and hour and minute chronograph counters. Williams blue on the chronograph hands and counters completes the watch’s sporty design language.

The Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme will be launched in June 2016 for CHF 4,100, a reasonable price that reflects Oris’s ‘real watches for real people’ philosophy of delivering innovative, reasonably priced, Swiss Made watches.
