RJ-Romain JeromeMOON-DNA ORBITER GMT Flying Tourbillon Limited Edition NEW

Moon orbiter GMT – More than a name, a lunar destiny

RJ-Romain Jerome unveils its new flying tourbillon, the Moon Orbiter GMT: the epitome of contemporary fine watchmaking. This futuristic, architectural and technical timepiece retains much of its predecessor’s DNA to unfold a whole new version.

Orbital technique

RJ-Romain Jerome has once again teamed up with La Joux-Perret to produce the Moon Orbiter GMT.
Taking some aspects of the original model, the new timepiece is home to an automatic flying tourbillon
caliber, a made-to-measure movement which has been entirely redesigned.

Unprecedented for the brand, the Moon Orbiter GMT sports an additional complication at 12 o’clock,
developed exclusively for this model: a fully-integrated, jumping hour retrograde GMT feature.

The new time zone is accompanied by a day/night function, which is indicated by a fully-functional disc
engraved with the sun and stars. The complication is regulated by means of a dedicated pusher at 2
o’clock on the case, acting as the timepiece’s claws as the continuity of RJ-Romain Jerome famous X
symbol.

Set atop a ceramic ball bearing, this distinctive X shape is also to be found on the rear side of the case,
on the oscillating weight, balanced by inertia-blocks made from Moon SilverRJ, an alloy made of low
oxidation silver and genuine moon dust.

RJ-Romain Jerome’s unique spring piston lugs have been specially adapted for the new round case,
ensuring maximum comfort on the wrist.

Lunar aesthetics

The Moon Orbiter GMT marks a break from the previous model with a 48 mm rounded case, made
from steel incorporating elements from the Apollo 11 spacecraft.

In the centre, the dial is arranged around the brand’s iconic traverses, in which a flying tourbillon is
set at 9 o’clock, balanced by the time dial at 3 o’clock. The tourbillon is particularly remarkable for
its assertive aesthetics and for the bridges’ highly contemporary architecture.

Characteristics of the Moon Orbiter GMT, the plate and dial form one piece that is engraved with a
stellar pattern motif. It allows maximum visibility on the movement’s circular-grained components
and train, both on the dial and on the rear side.

Bringing a resolutely more contemporary touch, the redesigned hands feature a red tip as“a subtle
reminder of the red Moon,” says Manuel Emch. To complete the timepiece, the black alligator strap
has been enhanced with a red stitching.

Constituting a contemporary embodiment of fine watchmaking, the Moon Orbiter GMT timepiece
comes in a strictly limited edition of 25.

Blancpains Métiers d’Art studio presents: The Great Wave

Baselworld 2016

Inspired by the motion of the sea, this latest Métiers d’Art creation highlights a gemstone used for the first time by Blancpain – Mexican silver obsidian – as well as a favorite Blancpain technique: Japanese rokushō patina.

Silver obsidian, known for its soothing qualities, is a semi-transparent volcanic rock. Its mysterious color speckled with puffy, silvery clouds infuses it with the elegant charm sought by the designers of the new Métiers d’Art timepiece. This gem serves as a base for "The Great Wave" applique in white gold. The technique used by Blancpain to create this applique involves several phases. It is first fixed to a Shakudō * base before being coated with a unique patina achieved by immersing it into a bath of rokushō salts.

Once the patina has been applied, the Shakudō is removed. Certain parts of the wave roller are polished in order to intensify the impression of a huge billowing wave. Finally, the engraving is affixed to the Mexican silver obsidian. This succession of steps gives the model a shimmering appearance playing on the mysteriously changing tones of the dial.

The breaker wave is crafted in a white gold patina. The engraving is inspired by the Great Wave off
Kanagawa, a Japanese woodblock print created by the artist Hokusai. The power and motion of the
wave as expressed by Blancpain’s master engravers contrasts with the symbolism of gray obsidian, a
stone evoking purity and balance.

This new Blancpain creation is distinguished not only by its distinctive aesthetic elegance, but also by its technical elements. The Manufacture places special emphasis on the innovation of its movements. For this timepiece, Blancpain has modified the famous hand-wound 13R0 caliber that now becomes the 13R3A movement.

The power-reserve display appears on the bridge side of the model so as to provide sufficient space to ensure optimal visibility of the engraving. The movement with its 8-day power reserve is equipped with three series-coupled mainspring barrels that successively wind and unwind. The second barrel serves as a relay for the first, replenishing its energy so as to maintain its force, and is in turn wound by the third barrel. The double-stepped case is fashioned in platinum.

Blancpain has opted for a bespoke calfskin strap crafted by a swiss artisan. Its storm gray color makes a perfect fit with the aesthetics of this enigmatic timepiece.

* Shakudō is a gold and copper alloy that Blancpain first used in 2015 on the Shakudō Ganesh model. That same year, the timepiece won the Artistic Crafts category prize in the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.
