Everything starts with a sketch, a drawing that commits the chosen theme, the story to be told, to paper. That of the Maison BVLGARI has been in the writing for more than 130 years. In step with its boundless creativity, themes dear to the jeweller have been transformed into endearing points of reference that are powerful reminders of its identity. A rich and fascinating universe that finds a new expression at the heart of a collection of complicated watches. I GIARDINI DI BVLGARI feature the emblematic motifs of the Naturalia collection, produced using the techniques of champleve, miniature painting, mother-of-pearl – or stone – marquetry and gemsetting. This year the jeweller unveils IL GIARDINO NOTTURNO. A garden in which the night sky reveals a stylised (Belle de Nuit) Beauty of the Night or Marvel of Peru, also known as a moonflower, which was already used in mother-of-pearl marquetry to decorate a piece of BVLGARI jewellery in the 1970s. A dial whose complexity expresses the different elements of which the decor of each of these three versions consists. A dial architecture built on four levels and evoking the four elements.

FIRE: BVLGARI reveals the fascinating character and spangled look of aventurine glass, an art dating back to the 17th century. This intense blue material, dotted with copper inclusions, is studded with eight diamond stars.

EARTH: The moonflowers are engraved using the champleve technique, gemset, polished and rhodium-plated. The marquetry specialist then sets white and Tahitian mother-of-pearl inserts into the heart of engraved petals.

AIR: The movement with its moon phase consists of an aventurine disc adorned with two engraved and polished gold moons.

WATER: The waves are engraved in mother-of-pearl. To obtain the required shades of blue, black varnish is applied under white mother-of-pearl. It is the subsequent different thicknesses of mother-of-pearl that cause the variations in the intensity of the blue. The mother-of-pearl is polished to give it maximum shine.

GRÖNEFELD – Parallax Tourbillon Platinum – Unique piece

GRÖNEFELD PARALLAX Tourbillon Platinum – Unique piece NEW

AN UNIQUE GRÖNEFELD PARALLAX IN PLATINUM

In October 2014 the horological brother Bart and Tim Grönefeld were laureated by the international jury of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. The Parallax Tourbillon was awarded “best tourbillon” in its class.

The Grönefeld Parallax Tourbillon features a “flying” tourbillon with a large central seconds hand, stop seconds, a power reserve- and winding-setting mechanism indicator. The hand finished movement displays sophistication and craftsmanship at the very highest level.

FLYING TOURBILLON

Well-designed and impeccably executed tourbillons are particularly accurate timekeepers. The flying tourbillon allows full appreciation of the concentric, rhythmic “breathing” of the balance hairspring, while ensuring high precision.

Bart and Tim Grönefeld further highlighted the tourbillon by raising it out of the movement and above the dial. As with the immaculately finished movement bridges, the tourbillon cage is crafted in stainless steel. Three days are required just for the hand finishing of the tourbillon components.

LARGE CENTRAL SECONDS

The precision of the Parallax Tourbillon is evidenced by the large central seconds hand. Normally a central seconds hand requires a friction spring to prevent small fluttering caused by play in the gear train.

For the Parallax Tourbillon, the Grönefeld brothers developed the movement with an added pinion and wheel so that the energy-sapping friction spring is not required: A feature improving power transfer to the regulator and contributing to the precision and impressive power reserve of 72-hours.

PUSH-ONLY CROWN AND FUNCTION INDICATOR

In addition to the flying tourbillon and friction-spring-free central seconds, the Parallax Tourbillon has yet another innovative feature: rather than pulling the crown to set the time, which has the risk of damaging the fragile crown stem, it is pressed.

An indicator on the dial displays the function selected: “W” for Winding or “S” for time setting. When the time setting function is selected, both tourbillon cage bridge and the central seconds hand automatically return to their respective 12 o’clock positions and stop (or hack) while the time is set.

STAINLESS STEEL BRIDGES

For this unique piece Bart and Tim Grönefeld made special blackened stainless steel bridges for this unique movement to enhance the contrast. As well as the superior hardness and durability of stainless steel compared to standard brass or nickel, the metal absolutely gleams when polished to a mirror finish. And as stainless steel does not oxidize, the gleaming finish lasts and lasts.

GRÖNEFELD HISTORY

The Grönefeld family has a history spanning for more than a hundred years in watchmaking. Bart and Tim Grönefeld are the third generation to continue the family tradition, which was founded by Johan Grönefeld in 1912. After a long career working for the most prestigious Swiss watch manufacturers, the Grönefeld brothers presented their first watch, a Tourbillon Minute Repeater, in 2008. They followed this in 2010 with their award-winning One Hertz, first in-house developed caliber. Grönefeld timepieces stand out for the innovation of their technical features, the clarity of their design and the excellence of their craftsmanship.
