THE  INSPIRATION
Following many years of development work and numerous successful trials, in August 1934 the American researcher CHARLES WILLIAM BEEBE (left), whose background was actually in ornithology, and his partner OTIS BARTON, reached a record depth of 923 metres at a point in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. What was the obsession that led these two men to be lowered into the so-called »Twilight Zone« (a depth of between 300 and 1000 metres), confined inside a small steel sphere? They were driven by their passion and fascination, their imagination and their desire to make new discoveries. Inspired by these pioneers of deep sea research, our development of the MOLA 923M reflects a similar passion. This timepiece is an expression of the desire for adventure and for faraway places.

Virtually all the components of the MOLA 923M, which is only available in a limited edition of  1·000, have been specially developed with particular attention to the smallest details, and to the specific requirements of this timepiece. Particular care has been taken to select the highest quality components. The work of making this design reality and of producing the parts for the case, using high grade stainless steel and the latest manufacturing technology, was entrusted to the vastly experienced company SUG G L A S H ÜT T E . To complete the production phase, each case was subjected to a hydromechanical pressure test to 40 bar. In the second phase, a MOLA 923M bearing the serial number 1·006 was selected to be subjected to an additional pressure test under the supervision of G E R M A N I S C H E R L LOYD, Hamburg.

THE  NAME

This watch takes its name from the sunfish (MOLA MOLA, lat. millstone). A fascinating sea creature that mainly inhabits the warmer waters of Asia, Africa and Australia, but which can sometimes be found in the Mediterranean too. There are parallels with the MOLA 923M – each is impressive in its own way. The mola is certainly a remarkable fish, measuring more than three metres across and weighing over a tonne. Another fascinating attribute is its ability to dive to depths of more than 1000 metres. Maybe CHARLES WILLIAM BEEBE encountered one of them.
