Arnold & Son was a preferred supplier of marine chronometers to the Royal Navy. Thanks to their precision, the company's instruments were indispensable as a means of determining longitude reliably at sea and accompanied many a captain and explorer on their voyages of discovery. Among them was Captain James Cook, one of the finest navigators and explorers of his era, whose three voyages to the Pacific Ocean are commemorated in glorious full-colour, hand-finished miniatures on the dials of these limited-edition (25) sets of three timepieces. The perfect traveller's watch, they feature indicators for two time zones (including half or quarter time zones), a big date display and a symmetrically ordered crown and pushpieces.

It also slides, permitting it to be set to display the mean solar time of any location according to its longitude.

The Valbray story starts in 2009 when two passionate people, an engineer and a designer, crossed paths…

Young and talented, Côme de Valbray and Olga Corsini, shared a rich experience in the luxury industry, a profound interest for the watchmaking world and the dream to propose their creativity in complete independence. At that time, Olga was working on a collection for a High Jewelry Parisian Maison and Côme was responsible for fabrication processes at a Swiss high-end watch manufacturer. Passionate about photography and optics, subjects of his end-of-studies thesis, Côme saw one day Olga’s designs inspired by spiral sea-shells and found a resemblance to a diaphragm system. The idea to create timepieces with a modern and timeless design based on this complex mechanism crossed his mind.

One year later, the first prototype was realized and the feasibility of the aperture mechanism was validated.
A meeting of chance and the tenacity of a research gave life to Valbray…

The revolutionary Valbray’s obturator system, that recalls the intensity diaphragm on photography, is a pure example of contemporary micro-mechanical masterpiece, applied on the watchmaking tradition.

Valbray has invested more than two exiting years of teamwork to realize it, tackling several challenges. Finally Valbray did it and registered the patent in 2010.

The system is composed by 16 extra thin blades, entirely fitted in a rotating bezel of only 45 mm in diameter and 7 mm wide.

They open and close slowly sliding one over the other on a constant and regularly circular shape.

On the maximum open position of the bezel, the blades completely disappear, leaving an under and different dial of 30 mm appear.

The bezel is waterproof and doesn’t have any sign to operate the system (no pusher, no bar).

The system is thoroughly hidden and independent of the watch movement and it is manually actionable by turning the bezel with the fingers. 

That makes the piece really interactive and intriguing.
