Moritz Grossmann – ATUM Date Gold

Moritz GrossmannATUM Date Gold

Moritz Grossmann presents the ATUM Date

Premiere of the jumping date: 23 March at Baselworld 2017

The date indication, a complication coveted and often discussed by watch enthusiasts, is a comparatively recent development in the long history of precision watchmaking. The first wristwatches with an analogue date were only just introduced in the early 20th century. For their date display in the ATUM Date, Grossmann's watchmakers adopted this classic format as well.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A full date scale and an unusually shaped bracket marker emphasise the elegance and functionality of the model family. The jumping date combines a precisely legible display with mechanical ingenuity and a rare degree of convenience.
Calibre 100.3

The calibre 100.3 of the ATUM Date is based on the calibre 100.1 of the ATUM line. Its characteristic elements, such as the pillar movement with 2/3 plate, wheel train, stopwork, removable winder module, escapement and oscillation system also feature the High-Artistic Finish. The jumping date mechanism is a complex ensemble of parts that are integrated in the main plate on the dial side.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Both the winder and the handsetting mechanism are taken from the calibre 100.1. To prevent a simultaneous reverse adjustment of both systems or damage to the date switcher, the separate datesetting mechanism is uncoupled with a stop lever as soon as the handsetting crown is pulled and the stop seconds device stops the watch.

The jumping date

The jumping date relies on a complex system composed of the date switching ratchet, release lever, switching star, and the date ring with the bracket-style marker. The date ratchet consists of the wheel itself, a ring-shaped switching finger spring, and the switching finger.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The switching finger can freely rotate on the wheel but is secured by the ring spring in a position that allows movements on both sides but always requires tensioning of the spring. The mechanism is powered by the hour wheel at a ratio of 2:1, so the ratchet wheel fully rotates anticlockwise once every 24 hours. The transmission ratio of the date marker mechanism is calibrated to 11.6°, so the increments of the date ring add up to a total of 31 days.

Datesetting mechanism

Apart from the precisely jumping date, this type of date display has the advantage that the switching finger does not engage with the wheel train except for the few milliseconds during which the jump to the next date is taking place. The date can be changed in either direction at any time while the movement continues to run.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The separate setting crown at 10 o'clock allows the date to be easily corrected, for instance at the end of a month. Normally, this setting crown is not engaged, so inadvertent adjustments are prevented. The crown must be pulled out to set the date. During the process, the movement continues to run and the date can be set by turning the crown in either direction. A jumper spring causes the date ring with the marker to precisely engage in the selected position.

Dial and hands

On the solid-silver dial, the minute scale is shifted inward to provide space for the complete date scale from 1 to 31. The blue date numerals clearly contrast against the applied hour markers. To avoid competition with the hour and minute hands, the date indicator points to the date from the circumference instead of from the centre.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Lavishly finished by hand, the bracket-shaped date marker is annealed to a brown-violet hue to contrast against the blue date numerals. The ATUM Date is fitted with the typical lancet-style hands. In the manufacture, they are crafted, finished, and annealed to a brown hue to match the rose-gold case. For the white-gold model, all hands are made of polished stainless steel.

With the complete date scale in both versions, the ATUM Date delivers an impressive sense of the progression of days.

The ATUM Date is presented in rose-gold and white-gold versions.

BLANCPAIN – VILLERET 8 Jours Manuelle Gold Edition - Unique pieces

BLANCPAINVILLERET Métiers d’Art 8 Jours Manuelle - The “Battle of the Queen Cows” Gold Edition - Unique pieces

Blancpain’s Métiers d’Art Workshop pays tribute to Switzerland presents: The Battle of the Queen Cows

Baselworld 2017

Blancpain and its Métiers d’Art Workshop present a new one-of-a-kind model crafted in gold and in the brand’s cherished shakudō alloy, depicting abattle of the queen cowsstaged in front of the iconic Matterhorn.

This breed of cows from the Val d’Hérens have been part of the Swiss national heritage since 1861. Their ancestors were already present in the Valais in 3,000 BC. Thanks to their sturdy nature and their short legs, these animals are capable of climbing to heights of 3,000 meters and more, and are above all known for their traditional fights held each spring as part of the ritual of taking them up to the alpine meadows.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

These bovines with their strong and combative personality vie with each other to establish a hierarchy among the herd, by butting each other with their head and horns. A cow is declared the winner when its opponent turns away or refuses the fight in a token of submission. At the end of this face-off, the herd’s “queen of queens” is thus designated. This status enables it to lead the others in the common quest for lush pastureland. On the dial of this model, Blancpain pays tribute to another national emblem: the legendary Matterhorn. Towering to an altitude of 4,478 meters above sea level, it is Switzerland’s best-known mountain due to its pyramid shape, and its ascension remains a powerful symbol for alpinists the world over.

Shakudō and rokushō

Shakudō is an alloy composed of gold and copper. Historically it was employed to adorn sword sheathes, decorative objects and jewelry. The artisans engraved the shakudō and added other ornamentation. On the new Blancpain timepiece, the dial appliques depicting the cow fight are fashioned in gold and hand-engraved. They are affixed to the shakudō dial and held in place by miniature feet.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Once joined together, these three elements of the dial are given a rokushō patina, which is a copper salt bath into which the dial is dipped. The tint and its intensity are determined by the number of dipping treatments and their duration. It is the studied eye and artistic sensitivity of the engraver that determine the nuances and depth of the rokushō treatment. The Blancpain logo and the Matterhorn are hand-engraved on the shakudō dial by an in-house artisan working with extremely accurate tools.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The cows’ necklace is in yellow gold, incorporated into the red gold cow applique using the damascening technique, which consists of hollowing a cavity into the applique to be filled with another metal, in this case yellow gold. The latter is then meticulously hammered into the cavity in order to spread it uniformly and thereby smoothen the surface of the applique that will then be engraved and polished, also by hand.

The movement

This new Blancpain timepiece is as distinguished technically as it is aesthetically. This 42mm timepiece is fitted with the manual wind caliber 13R3A. In this watch, the power-reserve indicator is placed on a bridge on the reverse of the movement, visible through the sapphire case back.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This movement achieves an 8-day power reserve thanks to its construction with three series-coupled mainspring barrels that unwind in succession. The second barrel takes over from the first before its strength is depleted, and then the third barrel does the same. This construction thereby guarantees the movement’s precision.

GREUBEL FORSEY – BALANCIER Gold Edition

GREUBEL FORSEYBALANCIER White Gold Limited Edition

BASELWORLD 2017: Greubel Forsey
BALANCIER in White Gold

La Chaux-de-Fonds, March 2017: As the latest addition to the family of Greubel Forsey timepieces, the “Balancier” perfectly embodies the watchmak-ers’ fundamental principles. It is a timepiece that crystallises all the unique qualities of Greubel Forsey with remarkable understatement.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have been pushing the limits of fine watchmaking for many years now, tackling the challenges of complexity every day. And yet, after the Double Tourbillon 30°, the Quadruple Tourbillon, the Tourbillon 24 Secondes and many other bold complications like the Grande Sonnerie, the “Balancier” was self-evident. Greubel Forsey was bound one day to create a timepiece of great purity, featuring a unique and original balance wheel.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Their creativity is immediately evident in the asymmetry of its case, which has almost become a constant of Greubel Forsey’s universe. Every detail of the “Balancier” carries the unmistakable stamp of a true Greubel Forsey timepiece – the watchmaking Maison’s values are manifest in the refinement and purity of its lines and dial, the inventive architecture of its balance wheel, the sharp profile of its hands, and the engraving on the reverse of the timepiece.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The watchmakers’ inventiveness is strongly in evidence in the new balance wheel. It was entirely developed and made at the Atelier, with its six gold mean-time screws, and it boasts remarkable aerody-namic qualities. The technical nature of this balance wheel generates exceptional regulating power, a mark of great chronometric stability.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Outstanding workmanship is very dear to Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey, and it shines through in the wholly hand-executed barrel-polishing, bevelling and finishing of the balance wheel bridge. Such operations require prodigious expertise and know-how, particularly for the hand decoration of all the parts.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The hand-countersunk and polished centres of the flame-blued steel hands offer another example of mastery in the craft, while the engraved gold plates on the back of the timepiece are also a pure master-piece of hand-finishing skills.

The “Balancier” is available in a limited edition of 33 pieces in its white gold version.

ARNOLD & SON – Royal Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36 Edition

ARNOLD & SONRoyal Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36 Limited Edition

Royal Collection
Pre-BASELWORLD 2017

Introducing the Arnold & Son Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36, a modern tribute to the historical high-precision chronometers made by John Arnold.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Symmetry and skeletonization are two traits that should come to mind whenever Arnold & Son is mentioned, and the Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36 is certainly no exception. Drawing inspiration from the John Arnold pocket chronometer No. 1/36, which will mark its 240th anniversary in 2018, the Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36 is a commemorative creation leading up to the milestone year for the historically significant John Arnold chronometer.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The John Arnold Chronometer No. 1/36 or “Arnold 36” as it is more commonly called was not only the first pocket watch by John Arnold to use a larger movement with his “T” balance, but also the first to be referred to as a “chronometer” for its superior timekeeping capabilities. In this respect, the Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36 is faithful, contemporary horological homage.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Following the classical codes of traditional English chronometer movements, the main pivoting elements such as the wheels, barrels, the tourbillon, and others are each mounted on their own bridge. The triangular, multilevel bridges (no less than thirteen) are mostly skeletonized, providing a more contemporary sense of three-dimensional depth to the entire timepiece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The tourbillon, a central element of this timepiece, is highlighted in a most magnificent manner. Held by a skeletonized and mirror-polished top bridge, the one-minute tourbillon features a typically Arnold & Son three-spoke design. Weighing mere fractions of a gram, the tourbillon cage consists of no less than 58 components. Prominently positioned on the dial side, the tourbillon can also be viewed from the back, thanks to an opening in the main plate. The same kind of opening is made below the small seconds display, adding to the symmetry of the Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The apparent technical virtuosity of the Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36 is not only a treat for the eyes, as the watch is a COSC certified chronometer; something of a rare achievement for a tourbillon-equipped timepiece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The decorative haute horlogerie arts are also lavishly demonstrated in the Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36. The entirely in-house conceived and manufactured A&S8600 calibre features a smooth sand-blasted main plate and bridges with chamfered and polished edges.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The main plate and bridges are treated with a golden coating, echoing the aesthetics of the historical pocket watches made by John Arnold. The main plate also is set with several mirror-polished 18k gold chatons, while the wheels in the gear train are embellished with circular satin finishing with chamfered and polished edges. Even the screws are beveled and feature with mirror-polished heads.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The heart of the watch, the tourbillon, features a traditional construction with a top bridge, while the mirror-polished cage has the signature Arnold & Son three-spoke design, making a complete turn in 60 seconds.

The double barrels, embellished with laser-engraving decoration, provide a considerable power reserve of 90 hours when fully wound.
