CHOPARD – Mille Miglia 2014

CHOPARDMille Miglia 2014 Chronograph Limited Edition NEW

Racing in style
Since 1988, Chopard is partnering the “corsa più bella del mondo”. The Mille Miglia 2014 chronograph pays tribute to the historical cars taking part in the most renowned of the classic car races. With its vintage details and its gentleman’s driver-style personality, this limited edition is the most Italian of the Mille Miglia watches.

The ties between Chopard and the Mille Miglia are extremely close and have been maintained without interruption since 1988. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Chopard’s co-president, is himself a collector of historical cars and a competitor in classic car rallies, including the Mille Miglia in which he takes part each year. The Mille Miglia 2014 model is a chronograph featuring a design vividly reflecting the spirit of the legendary race after which it is named: it is also vintage, sophisticated, and distinctively Italian.

Although the Mille Miglia has always been open to drivers and teams of all origins, it was for many years very much a primarily Italian stamping ground. Alfa Romeo and Ferrari completely dominated the podiums.

The drivers participating in the contemporary Mille Miglia are seasoned collectors as well as experienced racers. They show up on the starting line in cars that must necessarily have taken part in one of the 24 original race editions run between 1927 and 1957. That is why the Mille Miglia remains “la corsa più bella del mondo”. It is spoken in Italian and experienced in Italian.

Like an Italian flag

The Mille Miglia 2014 carries a more distinctly Italian flavour than any of its predecessors. With its red tachometric scale and hands, white dial and green minute circle, it flies the colours of the nation’s flag. This watch is endowed with a strong character and pays tribute to the oldest cars taking part in the race, those dating from the 1920s and 1930s.

That is why the usual strap made in rubber with a 1960s Dunlop racing tyre-tread motif has been replaced by a version in overstitched Barenia calfskin reminiscent of the bonnet straps on the most venerable participants in the race. The red arrow-shaped Mille Miglia logo appears on the dial as well as on the sapphire crystal case-back.

Vintage inspiration

The contemporary Mille Miglia 2014 watch is thus dominated by vintage detailing. The slender cursive dial fonts are inspired by the 1920s. The lugs holding the strap are soldered rather than screwed in. This traditional technique considerably complicates the task of producing and polishing the case of this model. Radiating an undeniably masculine aura, this limited edition of 2014 pieces in steel and 250 pieces in rose gold all feature reasonable dimensions. At 42 mm in diameter and 12.30 mm thick, this is a watch that is discreet in both size and spirit.

Mechanical precision

The Mille Miglia 2014 is equipped with a self-winding chronograph movement. Chopard ensures its performances by submitting all its movements to the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute) which guarantee their precision - because good looks are not enough. While the Mille Miglia race is indeed impressive to watch in terms of the beautiful vehicles taking part, it is also awarded by very discerning criteria involving peerless precision and technical mastery. In the same way, the Mille Miglia 2014 shines as much by its outward aesthetic appeal as by its rigorous mechanical heart.

A. Lange & Söhne – Blue Moon

A. Lange & Söhne –  Blue Moon

Superbly precise: moon-phase watches by A. Lange & Söhne

Five timepieces with moon-phase displays are showcased in front of impressive star atlas images from the “Harmonia Macrocosmica” by Andreas Cellarius.

In English, the term blue moon refers to the second full moon within a given calendar month, a rare phenomenon that on average occurs only every two and half years. Most mechanical moon-phase indications must be corrected by one day “once in a blue moon”. This is because for simplicity’s sake, they round the period of time between two new moons down to 29.5 days even though it is actually 44 minutes and 3 seconds longer.

A. Lange & Söhne moon-phase watches are much more precise. Most of them reproduce the lunar month with an accuracy of 99.998 per cent. The new Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase is one example. Its display only needs to be corrected by one day every 122.6 years.

But Lange’s product developers demonstrated that precision can be further enhanced: The orbital moon-phase display of the Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar “Terraluna presented this year is calculated with such accuracy that it takes 1058 years to deviate by one day. Additionally, it shows the constellation of the moon relative to the earth and the sun.

Since 1994, the manufactory has developed 15 calibres with moon-phase displays. Five models from the current collection that feature this and other complications were photographed against fascinating backdrops: depictions of the universe from the “Harmonia Macrocosmica” set the stage for the highly precise timepieces.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...       BIG FOTO

They come from the magnificent sky atlas created by German-Dutch mathematician and cartographer Andreas Cellarius in 1660*. The scenography emphasises the affinity between astronomy and horology: in timepieces with astronomical complications, watchmakers have always attempted to emulate the progression of celestial bodies as accurately as possible.

From today’s perspective, Cellarius’ rich illustrations make it clear how fundamentally our view of the world has changed in the course of the past two millennia: it evolved from Ptolemy’s geocentric standpoint that placed the earth in the middle of the cosmos to the current model of an expanding universe.

With its imaginative cosmic scenographies, the “Harmonia Macrocosmica” sky atlas published in Amsterdam in 1660 by Andreas Cellarius (1596–1665) is one of the most impressive works of art in astronomical history.

The celestial charts of the German-Dutch mathematician and cosmographer were reproduced with 29 large-format copper plate prints deemed to be the pinnacle of the golden age of cartography. They show Claudius Ptolemy's geocentric view of the cosmos, Nicolaus Copernicus' heliocentric system, and Tycho Brahe's reconciliation theory as well as the orbits of the sun, moon, and planets, and the constellations of the northern and southern hemispheres. An annotated reprint of “Harmonia Macrocosmica” was published by Taschen GmbH in Cologne in 2006.

Jaeger-LeCoultre – Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1948

Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1948 NEW

A cult watch that has appealed to both men and women, the Reverso has shown up in all manner of fascinating guises since 1931. Featuring an attractive blend of elegance and sportiness, the Reverso became a great classic of the Art Deco cultural movement, of which it embodies the essential values: refinement, artistic craftsmanship and aesthetic clarity. Ever since its birth, and above and beyond its timekeeping function, the Reverso has played the role of a guardian of memories.
The Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1948 with its stainless steel case revives the spirit of a bygone era. Contrary to many models that enjoyed pre-war fame and were by then consigned to oblivion, the Reverso watch with the swivel case, which was celebrating its 17th birthday in 1948, was more modern than ever. Its case with the emblematic gadroons radiated the cool, fresh appeal of steel. It still featured the same characteristics that were soon to become truly timeless – while its intense blue hands and hour-markers pointed towards the aspirations of an era eager for renewal.

In 2014, the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre pays tribute to the watch that heralded the Fabulous Fifties, created during the time when all hopes were focused on technical progress, and precision was gaining ground. The Reverso’s extraordinary combination of beauty and technical genius could only have seen the light of day in the workshops of Jaeger-LeCoultre, the world reference among watchmakers. In 1948 just as in 2014, the designers of the Manufacture made sure to display the inscription “Fabriqué en Suisse” (made in Switzerland) on the dial, just above the Jaeger-LeCoultre signature.

The Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1948 comes in a comfortable width and height accentuated by a stunningly slender shape, together illustrating the skills of the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre in all fields of horology. As connoisseurs are well aware, the generous surface of its back is destined to fulfil its owner’s wish for personalisation. Thanks to this surface that measures just a few square centimetres, the Reverso became a horological work of art and an object of emotion, to be passed on or shared. Gaining a full appreciation of the elegance radiated by this timepiece means dragging the gaze from the dial in order to admire the profile of the watch. Its close embrace of the wrist is made possible by its extremely slender 7.3 mm case that incorporates the complex parts of the swivelling mechanism as well as a movement measuring just 2.94 mm thin.

The resistance and reliability of Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 822/2 testify to the expertise cultivatedwithin the Manufacture. Stemming from the horological research conducted by Jaeger-LeCoultre, the Manufacture Calibre 822/2 beating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour is renowned for its sturdiness and precision. Against the light background of the silver-toned dial, the applied hour-markers and facetted baton-type hands stand out clearly in all circumstances to ensure perfect legibility.

The lower section bears a small seconds subdial serving as a constant reminder that the pace of daily life had accelerated by 1948 and that a timepiece had become an indispensable accessory of modern living. At a time when respect for accurate schedules had ceased to be a luxury and was already a necessity, the reliability of a watch mechanism represented an essential asset for a watch.
