With its top-end watchmaking expertise, its distinct design, and the history associated with it, this gentleman’s watch remains a continuing object of desire.

The anniversary of an iconic calibre

The Memovox line has been a continuous element in the Manufacture’s history since the 1950s, and has a story that resonates with both aficionados and collectors of Jaeger-LeCoultre watches.

Featuring a double crown and a mobile disc with the desired alarm time shown by a triangular indicator, the Memovox watch made its mark on Fine Watchmaking the minute it was released.

Its legendary movement, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 815, was the first automatic movement to boast an alarm function signed by the Grande Maison and has inspired many others since its introduction in 1956. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 956 that drives the Master Memovox Boutique Edition is direct descendent of the original.

“The voice of memory”

At the heart of its movement and its design is the alarm function. This eminently audible mechanical memory was invented in the 1950s, infused with post-war optimism that saw men set out to conquer the world in modern global management roles. The distinctive alarm is set to a meeting time or an event, and can be used as well as a wake-up call.

Now that our world has become consumed in all things digital, what could be more truly luxurious than being prompted to recollect a meeting, or being awoken, by the mechanical chiming of your wristwatch alarm? No doubt it is this somewhat old-fashioned charm that appeals so strongly to lovers of watches with personality.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

There are two crowns on this watch. The bottom crown is used for winding as well as setting the time. Setting the alarm function is simple: shift the top crown into neutral position. Then, in position 2, turn this crown in anti-clockwise direction until the desired ring time. In doing so, the mobile disc with its little “retro-style” and famous Memovox indicator triangle turns around the dial to the alarm time. Turning the crown clockwise allows you to set the date, displayed in an aperture at 3 o’clock.

The Grande Maison’s watchmakers wanted this watch to appeal to all the senses of the man who wears it, so they worked painstakingly to achieve a very pure sound for the mechanical alarm. Exacting standards underpin all the craftsmanship of Jaeger-LeCoultre.

A vintage design that still looks fresh

When Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers set out to create this special anniversary edition of the automatic Memovox, they sought inspiration in a watch dating back to the 1970s, the Memovox Snowdrop. This rare model with its tranquil greyish-blue dial has lost none of its allure. Blue is quite emblematic of the Memovox collection and has always been a very popular colour for this watch throughout its history.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial has kept all the characteristics of the Memovox Snowdrop. Baton hands with a luminescent coating move around a white “railtrack” minute circle, which delineates the outer rim of the sunray-finish blue inner disc. Here is ensconced the little triangle that acts as a hallmark of the alarm function, and also glows in the dark.

Moving across an opaline blue surface, the triple-faceted hour-markers are also coated in luminescent material and overlaid by a grey-blue “railtrack” minute circle – just like the original watch. As a crowning touch, the twelfth hour-marker is replaced with a Jaeger-LeCoultre logo. This watch constitutes a fine homage to its ancestor, giving a modern “retro-style” look and feel.

As for the stainless steel case, its contemporary design with brushed finishes gives the wrist an unquestionable elegance. Turning it over to see its reverse side, one lights upon an entirely engraved case-back, marked as belonging to a limited edition of 500 pieces. The “1000 Hours Control” symbol in the centre certifies that the watch has successfully undergone 1000 hours of rigorous tests relating to its functioning and reliability.

The material selected for the strap is a deep blue braided cotton known as “Trieste”, with a contemporary light blue stitching. Supple calfskin lining ensures a comfortable and flexible fit.

A much longed-for yet unexpected surprise from the Jaeger-LeCoultre Maison, the Master Memovox Boutique Edition watch exudes an aura of exclusivity and mythical glamour that augurs a great future...

BREGUET – Tradition Dame 7038 Rose Gold

BREGUETTradition Dame 7038 Rose Gold 37mm

Breguet’s Tradition collection welcomes
a
new self-winding Tradition Dame 7038
model in 18k Rose Gold.

Pre-Baselworld 2017

Breguet is devoting its 2017 pre-Basel launch to women. The House presents a worldwide exclusive glimpse at a new version of its Tradition Dame model, radiantly attired in rose gold.

The cutting-edge Tradition collection from Breguet belongs to the select circle of authentic Haute Horlogerie icons. First introduced in 2005, the Tradition collection has steadily expanded to include a palette of exceptional models now enriched by the rose gold Tradition Dame. With this self-winding timepiece, Breguet has succeeded in feminising a model whose aesthetic essence lies in mechanical horology, a field that many tend to reserve for men.

Clearly visible front and centre of the watch, the barrel is decorated with a rosette motif and overlapped at 12 o’clock by a dainty offset dial in natural white mother-of-pearl, finely adorned with hand-crafted engine-turned “Clou de Paris” hob nailing. Although in full view, the main movement gear trains, as well as the bridges bearing them, remain sufficiently discreet to ensure smooth and instant reading of the hours and minutes pointed by rose gold open-tipped Breguet hands.

The sandblasted mainplate and bridges are rhodium-plated to create a pleasing contrast with the rose gold case. The latter is set on its bezel with 68 brilliant-cut diamonds, while a watch jewel sets the perfect finishing touch on the crown. The magnificent craftsmanship lavished on this model is also visible through the back on the gold oscillating weight, graced with the same motif as the barrel.

Equipped with Calibre 505SR, it features a lever escapement with silicon pallets and a Breguet balance-spring also made of silicon.

BLANCPAIN – Fifty Fathoms BATHYSCAPHE Blue

BLANCPAINFifty Fathoms BATHYSCAPHE Blue

Bathyscaphe welcomes a new addition to the family
PRE-BASELWORLD 2017

The vintage-inspired Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe, first presented in 2013, is extending its range by introducing a 38 mm timepiece attired in abyss blue.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The new three-hand 38 mm Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe model appears in a blue shade particularly cherished by Blancpain in that it recalls the depths of the ocean. Various key characteristics of this timepiece are nods to the first Fifty Fathoms editions. Setting the perfect finishing touch, the steel bezel features a blue ceramic insert and hour-markers in Liquidmetal®, an alloy known for its deformation resistance and its long-term stability.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Blancpain’s Bathyscaphe diving watches were created in the late 1950s, with models first for men and later for women. In 2013, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms, the Bathyscaphe appeared with a new aesthetic reminiscent of the first editions. The contours were as sharply defined as their predecessors and the hands featured a traditional vintage look.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Like any self-respecting diving watch, each model is equipped with a unidirectional bezel rotating counter-clockwise by small notches. Loyal to the original Bathyscaphe version, the luminescent dot on the bezel serves as an index for divers, enabling accurate alignment with the minutes hand and thereby defining the start of a given dive time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

During the immersion, the seconds hand serves as an operating indicator. Water-resistant to 30 bar (approximately 300 meters), the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is powered by Caliber 1150.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This movement distinguished by its robustness and its chronometric performance is equipped with two series-coupled barrels ensuring a 100-hour power reserve while guaranteeing constant energy, a significant technological feat.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The modern and technical nature of the movement may be admired through a sapphire crystal case-back. Its silicon balance-spring is a relatively recent watch industry innovation that features several advantages: low density reducing its weight, greater shock resistance, as well as imperviousness to magnetic fields.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

These properties endow the balance-spring with an almost perfect geometry that enhances the movement’s isochronism and thereby improves the precision of the watch.
