The Harrods Princess, made exclusively for the famed luxury department store, is hand-set with 80 Gemfields Zambian emeralds and 241 natural diamonds for a total of 23.5 carats and will be unveiled at Harrods in the Fine Watch Room for the Biennale des Antiquaires exhibition.

The pièce unique was crafted in Switzerland, each Gemfields emerald has been carefully selected, and cut specifically for the Harrods Princess, ensuring depth and consistency of colour, combined with Backes & Strauss’ signature diamonds. The white gold case is set with Ideal Cut diamonds to match the dial, and a beautifully engineered bracelet created from a series of hand-crafted links adorned with a further 136 diamonds and emeralds, alone weighing 18.6 carats.

Iron treatment

The iron parts have been milled and turned out of solid iron. After the iron parts have been adjusted and finished, they were rusted with a special solution made of vinegar, salt and Hydrogen peroxide. Finally the rust particles were removed by Hydrochloric acid. The structure of the rust layer remained and was preserved by a durable PVD coating.

Its guilloché mother-of-pearl dial is an open invitation to dream. Like the sun, its rays shine outward from the day and night indicator. So as to intensify the brilliance of the dial, the hours are indicated by teardrop-shaped hour markers set with diamonds.  Time is measured out by delicate leaf-shaped hands for the hours and minutes, and by a baton-type hand for the seconds.  Their path is protected by a slightly domed sapphire crystal.

Black TZP ceramic is extremely resistant to scratches while not being brittle. In the Black Phantom, the material is blasted to give it a matte finish, and then used to form the front and back bezels of the timepiece’s tripartite case.

The center caseband of the Black Phantom is crafted from NTPT® (North Thin Ply Technology) carbon. Already used in the fields of aerospace technology, the manufacture of racing sales, and Formula 1 racecar design, NTPT carbon is incredibly strong and light, and composed of multiple layers of parallel filaments obtained by dividing carbon fibers.

These thin layers are impregnated with resin and then woven on a special machine that modifies the direction of the weft, creating a distinctive visual effect that is reminiscent of precious wood. In addition to the center caseband, the Black Phantom’s crown and pushers are also made from NTPT carbon.

The broad unidirectional rotating bezel with a satin-brushed finish and engraved hour-markers is adorned with four rider tabs – a Breitling signature feature – ensuring excellent handling as well as enhanced protection of the sapphire crystal which is glareproofed on both sides. The polished steel case, water-resistant to 200 meters (660 ft), is equipped with a large screw-locked crown with protective reinforcements. A personal bespoke (time) piece of art, made with the best materials and full of personal meanings for the owner. The dragon has always been the symbol of imperial power – a symbol for happiness, peace, protection and destiny. And since 8 is the Chinese lucky number, this dragon project was blessed with triple luck.

The BLUE DRAGON IMPERIAL alludes to and combines Chinese mythology with the craftsmanship of GRIEB & BENZINGER, for which the workshop is famed. This outstanding watch impresses by its amazing skeleton dragon which is fully skeletonized out of the movement itself and majestically floats within the case. Historical handicrafts and fine skills are exhibited by GRIEB & BENZINGER within this BLUE DRAGON IMPERIAL watch: hand-skeletonization, hand-guilloché, hand-engraving and of course fine watchmaking.

 The blue platinum coated movement is tribute to very rare historical Swiss watch making roots: Blue movements have mainly been built for the Chinese market in imperial China of the Qing Dynasty under Emperors Jia Qing and Dao Guang. GRIEB & BENZINGER is lucky enough to own one of these very rare original blue watch movements (made by Charles Oudin in about 1820) - the historical roots comes full circle.
