"The SPEED OF SOUND was a bold challenge that involved bringing the legendary Valjoux 88 calibre back to life and turning it into a contemporary masterpiece. The result is a full-fledged work of horological art combining tried-and-true mechanics with modern technology and avant-garde design. This timepiece takes us all the way from our home in Saint-Blaise to the infinite expanses of the cosmos. It thereby transcends the boundaries of time and space.

This edition comes in an exclusive series of just twenty pieces. It celebrates the twentieth anniversary of Les Ateliers Louis Moinet and promises to make quite an impression on the watchmaking world."
Jean-Marie Schaller, Owner & Creative Director

Innovating a historic movement

At the heart of SPEED OF SOUND is the Valjoux 88, a historic calibre built in the 1940s. Louis Moinet's master watchmakers have used all their skills to modernise this icon of Swiss watchmaking and place it inside a timepiece with a unique contemporary style.

Key to this intelligent and inventive transformation is the moon indication that has been entirely redesigned to offer a display never seen before in watchmaking. Its large, slightly domed disc features a lunar motif drawn by hand using luminescent paint that vividly recalls the splendour of our nightly celestial companion.

A fragment of the Dhofar 457, a rare lunar meteorite, was placed on the same disc to symbolise the full moon. This fragment comes from a lunar crater. The two pointers positioned at 3 and 9 o'clock indicate the current state of the moon. The moon is full whenever the fragment is aligned with one of these pointers.

Connoisseurs will notice that the date markers have been removed, a deliberate choice to reinterpret this calibre in a resolutely modern spirit.

A modern interpretation

The SPEED OF SOUND's contemporary signature is expressed through a carefully crafted artistic design elements.

The dial blends deep black with the warm glow of red gold, a rich contrast of colours that underlines this timepiece’s truly unique identity. It was created with Yann von Kaenel's guilloché engines using traditional engraving techniques.

The special design suggests a technological material. The pattern, which radiates mesmerising energy and interacts playfully with light whenever it moves. Sometimes it flashes brightly, at other times it seems to hide discreetly.

The chronograph counter and the small seconds dial feature the Aletai iron meteorite, adding both texture and a touch of mystery.

The picture is completed by carefully designed hands and indexes, which were kept purposely sober to avoid disturbing the aesthetic balance of the piece. The SPEED OF SOUND is housed in a 40-millimetre, grade 5 titanium case. It is elegant and light on the wrist. The sapphire dome, a technical feat in itself, magnifies every detail of the dial. The openworked lugs integrate perfectly with the bracelet.

A hand-engraved movement

The transparent case back of the SPEED OF SOUND reveals the engraving, a traditional motif with floral curves and delicate scrolls reminiscent of lace.

It bears witness to the ancestral art of hand engraving. This enchanting ensemble adds a touch of poetry to the mechanics of time.

Speed of Sound: measuring the speed of sound

This chronograph features a very special scale that can show the speed of sound by measuring the distance of a sound event. In the case of a thunderstorm, for example, when lightning strikes, you start the chronograph and stop it when you hear the thunder.

For the delight of those peering into the depths of the movement, this latest limited edition comes with a new movement, the Calibre MB M17.26.

Like the Calibre MB M16.26 that equipped the previous versions, this monopusher calibre has been flipped over to display all the mechanical action on the dial side of the watch. At first glance, the viewer may think it is a skeletonized movement, but a closer look reveals that this chronograph movement is on full display on the dial side of the watch.

In order to let the eye delve deeper into the movement and enjoy the craftsmanship of the individual components, the chronograph complication of the Calibre MB M17.26 has been constructed on pillars, allowing the light to flood in.

The chronograph bridge has also been put on top of the movement to highlight this distinctive component, the specific design of which was patented in 1912

Adding another modern twist to the timepiece, the German silver plates and bridges have been colored in a contemporary blue, providing a contrast with the rest of the movement, yet matching the tone of the blue sfumato calf leather strap.

This new limited edition comes in a 43mm stainless steel case with an elegant horizontal satin finishing. It is fitted with a white gold fluted bezel that has been inspired by Minerva’s first fluted bezel dating back to 1927, adding a touch of finesse to the model.

Signature Minerva Movement Design

In keeping with all Montblanc’s complicated movements, the distinctive Minerva arrow and the Maison’s “V”-shaped bridge are also on display.

The Minerva arrow is a tribute to the Roman Goddess who is always depicted with her arrow-tipped staff in hand, and the unusual “V”-shaped bridge comes from the view of the mountains seen from the watchmakers’ window in Villeret, a sight that has been a constant since the founding of the workshop in 1858.

No Distractions

Particular attention has been paid to the indications so that they don’t distract from the movement with a sapphire crystal dial, an open-worked 30-minute chronograph counter, an open-worked small seconds display, and elegant hands and indexes that have been created with Super-LumiNova® for enhanced legibility.

This new Montblanc Unveiled Minerva Monopusher Chronograph Limited Edition of 100 pieces combines tradition with a contemporary design thanks to the functionality of a monopusher chronograph and a new blue aesthetic that can be admired through numerous sapphire openings all around the case.

About Minerva

Founded in 1858 in the Swiss Jura valley of Villeret, the Manufacture Minerva has been in continuous operation for almost 165 years. Specialising in chronographs and sports counters, Minerva’s precision has received numerous world distinctions over the years. What sets Minerva movements apart is that each movement is assembled from start to finish by the same watchmaker. There are also a number of important details that you will only find in a Minerva movement: an incredible level of finishing, with bridges and baseplates in traditional German silver; a Minerva arrow that pays tribute to the Roman Goddess who is always depicted with her arrow-tipped staff in hand; an unusual “V”-shaped bridge inspired from the view of the mountains seen from the watchmakers’ window in Villeret; in-house hairsprings; and a special snail finishing.

Both Montblanc and Minerva are dedicated to pushing the limits of aesthetic and technical excellence. They are connected by fine craftsmanship, they are connected by mountains and valleys. They are connected by a quest for perfection.
