VANGUART – Black Hole Tourbillon - Yas Edition

VANGUART
Black Hole Tourbillon - Yas Edition Unique Piece - 2024

Our creation, the Blackhole Tourbillon, approaches the landscape of futurism while evoking a sense of wonder and possibility.

During the Islamic Golden Age, geometry, mathematics, mechanical engineering, artistry and decoration all coalesced into creations never before seen or imagined.

This was the primary source of inspiration for this unique Vanguart BlackHole Yas.

The 3-tier automaton dial is entirely decorated with traditional Arabic numerals that were hand-engraved with finely detailed calligraphy aesthetics. The complexity of this stylized engraving blurs the boundaries between the art and mechanics of the timepiece.

It reminds us of ancient times when art, science, inventions were closely intertwined. This same era witnessed the birth of the masterpieces of Ismail Al-Jazari, the father of robotics and creator of the first great automatons. This unique creation envisioned by a close friend of Vanguart carries this creative brilliance of the Islamic Golden Age forward into the 21 century.

The highly detailed and mesmerizing engraving work was achieved by our most talented artisans and required over 150 hours to complete. The hand engraved titanium dial features highly polished arabesques that are contrasted by matte textured finishes thoughout.

The final operation involves manually applying white Super- LumiNova and black lacquer to the reading elements, as well as the colors representing the United Arab Emirates around the edge of the dial.

AN AUTOMATON FOR THE FUTURE

Developed and created entirely in-house by the Vanguart team, caliber T-1701 features a central flying tourbillon that appears to be levitating above the animated dial.

The time is indicated by a linear time display with the hour and minutes each having their own concentric dial that border the tourbillon.

SEAMLESS DESIGN

The sweeping lines of the case flow seamlessly, complex geometries are conveyed with grace and fluidity, and every detail has been treated with care, craft and consideration.

There are no visible screws or pins, which further pushes the organic aesthetic. The final result is a flowing design that was created in absolute coordination with its next generation highly engaging tourbillon mechanism.

EMOTIONAL ENGINEERING

The setting of the watch is where the beautiful ingenuity of Vanguart is on full display.

A highly ergonomic joystick-type setting system replaces a traditional crown and allows the user to advance and reverse the time in a highly engaging and tactile way. Time simply flows forward and backward with the Blackhole with the slightest pressure.

ENGAGING TIME

775 components comprise this groundbreaking movement which has set the stage for the future of Vanguart mechanisms: technologically advanced, always engaging and placing User Interface into the equation, designed with refined beauty and hand-decorated entirely throughout.

THE FLYING TOURBILLON

At the heart of the Blackhole resides the Vanguart levitating flying tourbillon. Designed and developed entirely in-house, this highly finished and precise one-minute tourbillon creates an unparalleled visual impact at the epicenter of the timepiece.

TIME READING

The time is elegantly displayed in a linear format on the left side of the timepiece next to the triangular-shaped indicator. The 3-tier concentric automaton dial is in constant motion displaying the passage of time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The 1st tier represents the hour, the 2nd tier represents the first digit of the minutes, and the 3rd tier displays the second digit of the minutes which animates by advancing with each revolution of the one-minute tourbillon.

TIME SETTING

Winding and setting the Blackhole is both simple and engaging.

The lower crown is for winding the watch (1st position) as well as for precisely setting the time using the joystick function (2nd position). You can advance the time forward or backward by applying rotation to crown while enjoying the animation of the automaton dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The upper crown allows you to independently adjust the hours, providing an instant travel time function for when you change timezones.

COUNT-DOWN

The Blackhole also features a discret countdown timer function that allows you to experience the automaton dial in a different way. When you advance the lower joystick forward, you will see the diagonal-shaped indicators at the bottom of the case near the word REVERSE turn black and if you move the joystick backwards, the diagonal-shaped indicators will turn gold.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

You then simply set the time to represent the predetermined length of the countdown you wish to measure and press the crown in. The automaton dial display will then proceed to countdown. You are essentially reversing the passage of time!

POWER RESERVE

On the left side of the watch next to the triangular-shaped indicator for the time readout, you will see the power reserve display. It is designed as a series of eight horizontal lines with the word LOW at the bottom and FULL at the top.

As you wind the watch, the small horizontal black lines slowly appears, clearly indicating how much power is now in reserve.

QUICK RELEASE STRAP

Designed and created with great consideration for the user experience, Vanguart’s quick release strap system requires only one press of a button and a gentle pull to safely detach. The straps clip back in just as readily, allowing you to conveniently change the look at a moments notice.

The Vanguart straps for the Blackhole are the same dimensions as for future Vanguart watches, resulting in straps being able to be shared between different models entirely.

AQUASTAR – Deepstar 60 Re-Edition

AQUASTARDEEPSTAR Model 60 Re-Edition

A tribute to the brand’s inaugural dive watch from 1957

2023 marks the opening of the latest chapter in the last great story in dive watches, as venerable Swiss dive instrument maker Aquastar returns with a new Model 60 — a fully modernized tribute to the brand’s inaugural 1957 dive watch of the same name, which introduced a crucial safety measure for dive watches of that era: a friction ring in the rotating bezel to prevent accidental rotations.

Devised and originally patented by Aquastar, this simple, but critical feature would later become a standard feature echoed by legions of dive watches in the years that followed.

The 2023 Model 60 continues Aquastar’s earliest traditions of capability, adventure and exploration, which began in earnest on January 23rd in 1960 when US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh, wearing an original Model 60, and co-pilot Jacques Piccard, made a pioneering journey to the bottom of the Challenger Deep, aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste to a record-breaking depth of 10,916 meters (35,814 feet).

Walsh’s Model 60 is recognized as Aquastar’s inaugural tool watch, and would set an early precedent for the then-nascent maker, as Aquastar’s innovative and ultra-reliable watches would quickly earn a reputation as the foremost timekeeping choice for mariners, professional divers, and ocean conservationists alike.

Diver, Innovator, Disruptor

Aquastar was founded in 1962 in the city of Geneva in Switzerland by Mr. Frédéric Robert.  Mr. Robert, a diver, a sailor, a pilot, a watchmaker, a mathematician. He also represented Switzerland at the 1948 yachting world championship.

With extensive experience on the high seas, Robert set out to start a watch company that focused on developing watches, watch parts, and specialized instruments exclusively for underwater activities, ranging from sport diving to professional scientific excursions and underwater exploration, with the ultimate goal of making all diving exploits safer.

It was November 1962 when Robert renamed his father’s company JeanRichard™ company to “Aquastar,” and it was here, where an entirely new underwater legacy was born.

AQUASTAR – Deepstar Chronograph - 1962🔺

Aquastar marked the first time in the Swiss watchmaking world where a company was dedicated to producing professional-grade watches and timing instruments in a single market segment.

And with a catalog that quickly grew into dive watches and other aquatic tools like dive compasses, depth gauges, and thermometers – all of which could be fit onto watch straps, Aquastar’s mission soon became quite a unique one at the time for a Swiss horology Maison.

It was during this time that Mr. F. Robert distributed his range of diving instruments under the new name “Aquastar” almost exclusively through specialized stores instead of regular retailers.

Given the socioeconomic environment of the times, this non-traditional sales tactic seemed risky at first, but it reflected Robert’s innovative approach to problem solving – a trait that would reflect in his many patented designs, as well as the backbone that would define the brand’s disruptive legacy many years later.

In the picture below you see one of the first timepieces created by F. Robert in 1958, a water-resistant watch with a stop watch function, the “AQUASTART”.

MODEL 60, KEEPING WITH THE TRADITIONS

Thoughtfully sized in a 37mm stainless steel case the Model 60 is a somewhat unique reference in the deep Aquastar archive, as it follows a more traditional dive watch execution, using bold hour markers and lume-filled paddle hands, a 60 minute rotating bezel, and a center-mounted seconds hand, eschewing the bold asymmetrical dial elements that would characterize later Aquastar watches, like the iconic Deepstar Chronograph

In keeping with Aquastar’s modern traditions, the new Model 60 maintains a robust 200 meters of water resistance, and is powered by a top-grade, 100% Swiss Made La Joux-Perret G100 automatic movement with 68 hours of power reserve, a solid Tungsten ball bearing rotor and the sophisticatedly engineered KIF shock protection system.

The Aquastar model 60 comes on a choice of straps and bracelets. A seatbelt NATO, a genuine or a beads of rice stainless steel bracelet.

Keeping the traditions

“WITH EVERY AQUASTAR RELEASE, WE TRY TO LOOK AT THE PRODUCT CYCLES INTRODUCED BY THE BRAND’S ORIGINAL FOUNDER, FREDERIC ROBERT, AND LOOK AHEAD TO WHAT HE MIGHT STILL BE PRODUCING, HAD THE BRAND NEVER BEEN PAUSED DURING THE QUARTZ CRISIS,” SAYS RICK MAREI, AQUASTAR’S MODERN HELMSMAN. “WE ARE PROUD TO BE BOTH HISTORIANS AND CUSTODIANS OF THIS RICH BRAND, USING THE NEW MODEL 60 TO PAY TRIBUTE TO AQUASTAR’S INFLUENCE AND INNOVATIONS IN THE WORLD OF UNDERSEA EXPLORATION,” HE CONTINUES.

THE NEW POWER HOUSE G100, DEVELOPED AND MANUFACTURED IN SWITZERLAND BY LA JOUX PERRET

The new Aquastar model 60 re-edition is powered by the Swiss made manufacture calibre G100 from La Joux Perret

The G100 is manufacture calibre, developed and made in Switzerland, it is compatible in dimensions to the commonly used ETA caliber, yet it goes much further by featuring 68 hours of power reserve, KIF shock protection and heavy ball bearing rotor made of 100% solid tungsten. All features found in high grade Swiss calibers. The G100 movement powering the Model 60 is the Top of the line G100 version. It is adjusted in 4 positions by LJP
