With the Ace being the first card in a suit, it symbolizes the first Marine Corps squadron. The "A" in the upper left stood for the word "Air" while the "S" in the lower right represented the word "Squadron".
In this 100th year anniversary of the Ace of Spades squadron, Avi-8 is proud to introduce a timepiece inspired by and in tribute to this famed squadron and the AV8 Harriers still in service with this esteemed outfit ofthe US Marine Corps.
With details taken directly from the shape, form, and function of the Harrier, the watch is a study in avionic inspired design. The dial in particular demonstrates the most ofthis carefully studied effort to bring the cockpit to the wrist. Topped with a scratch resistant sapphire lens, the case is sturdy, robustly built with an imposing but not overbearing dimension of 46mm.
Crafted out of solid stainless steel the case provides a tank like home to the multi-Iayered architecture of the dial beneath the lens. Drawing from the incredible power and engineering ingenuity of the Rolls Royce Pegaus engine that powers the Harrier, a custom designed, modified turbine shaped rotor brings the wearer closer to the fit and feel of a truly aviation inspired design timepiece.
The Hawker Harrier Ace of Spades refers to the Marine Attack Squadron
231 United States Marine Corps that flies the AV-8B Harrier II
McDonnell Douglas evolution of the Hawker Harrier.
This version of the Harrier was launched in the early 1990s. U.S. Army General Norman Schwarzkopf named the Harrier / AV-8B’s as one of the most important weapons of the 1991
Gulf War. It continues to serve the needs of the Ace of Spades squadron
to this day in various theatres of combat, providing close air support
for ground troops and performing armed reconnaissance.
Measuring 46 mm in diameter the watch is built around a sturdy
well-built case featuring a flat scratch-resistant sapphire lens. A
crown positioned at the 2 o’clock positioned features a start insignia
in a nod to the US Air Force insignia marking its namesake aircraft.
The dial of the Ace of Spades is a representation of the best of the
AVI-8 brand. Comprised of more than 30 unique pieces, each part of the
dial has been carefully designed and laid out in keeping with
inspiration provided by the Harrier.
The passage of seconds is marked
out by a custom modified disc just below the 3 o’clock position and the
24-hour subdial has been constructed with a series of layers and indexes
which have been individually facetted applied with brush and polish
finishes.
This attention to detail and finishing can be found across the dial.
The result is a dial that while offering a clear cut time display,
presents a contemporary military industrialized look. Bold Flieger style hour and minute hands are bold and utterly
legible, allowing for a clear presentation of time and are lumed with
Swiss luminous for low light visibility.
Through the exhibition case back the watch shows off the custom
self-winding rotor developed to echo the turbine rotors of the famed
Rolls Royce Pegasus engine which powers the Harrier II.
A robust but supple genuine leather strap with military-inspired
stitching hugs the watch to the wrist with a fit that is durable and
effortlessly wearable. The Hawker Harrier 2 Ace of Spades Editionwill
be available from October 2019.
