IWC – PILOT’s Watch Chronograph Edition "JU-Air"

IWC PILOT’s Chronograph Edition "JU-Air" NEW

IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN AND JU-AIR: JOINTLY CONQUERING
THE SKIES FOR 20 YEARS

Schaffhausen, 1 July 2014 – For years now, IWC Schaffhausen and the Swiss airline JU-AIR have cultivated a partnership based on a mutual admiration of the Junkers JU-52 aircraft. Of just eight airworthy vintage JU-52s worldwide, one has carried the IWC logo for two decades and, in the year 2000, started out on a circumnavigation of the globe to publicize a new IWC Pilot’s Watch. Time, then, to acknowledge JU-AIR’s outstanding work. In honour of the airline established to keep the vintage aircraft aloft, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “JU-Air”, strictly limited to 500 watches, is ready to take off.

“In 1994, three of JU-AIR’s JU-52 aircraft flew to Venegono in Italy for the presentation of the latest watch collection from IWC Schaffhausen,” says IWC CEO Georges Kern, recalling the start of the company’s long-standing partnership with the Swiss airline. “We’ve helped subsidize JU-AIR ever since and are proud of the fact that the IWC logo has been so prominent on one of the JU-52 planes for the past 20 years.” An infectious passion for flying, IWC’s Pilot’s Watch tradition – which is almost as old as the historic corrugated sheet metal aircraft itself – together with a flair for classic design and mechanical engineering: these are the ties that bind JU-AIR and IWC Schaffhausen. The Swiss watch manufacturer, which established a tradition for designing and producing Pilot’s Watches in 1936, has now sponsored JU-AIR for exactly 20 years, making this the ideal time to give permission for take-off to the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “JU-Air” (Ref. IW387809) in stainless steel, which is limited to 500 watches.

IN THE COLOURS OF THE SILVER BIRD
The stainless-steel tribute to the JU-AIR has the cockpit instrument look of a classic Pilot’s Watch. The dial of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “JU-Air” is rhodiumplated, with appliqués and both hands picked out in white luminescent material. The result is excellent legibility even under the most demanding conditions. The central chronograph hand shows recorded times in seconds, while the hand on the subdial at “12 o’clock” shows the number of elapsed minutes. The watch has a flyback function, so whenever the reset push-button is pushed, the stopwatch hand returns to zero and immediately starts another timing sequence. The small red seconds hand at “6 o’clock” indicates that the watch is running normally. It can be stopped as needed to synchronize the watch.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “JU-Air” is fitted with the IWC manufactured 89365 calibre, which has a 68-hour power reserve and features a stopwatch to time minutes and seconds. IWC’s designers have modified the date window to make it look like a cockpit instrument: with its vertically arranged numerals, it now resembles an altimeter. A strikingred triangle, by now a typical design feature of IWC’s Pilot’s Watches and inspired by the signal-red elements on an aircraft’s instrument panel, indicates the date. The case back features an engraving of a Junkers JU-52, while the inscription “One out of 500” refers to the limited edition.

THE IWC-JU ON ITS JOURNEY ROUND THE WORLD
In the year 2000, a JU-AIR JU-52 took off in the name of IWC Schaffhausen to circle the globe and created a sensation. HB-HOS set out on its ambitious mission with an image of an oversized Pilot’s Watch decorating its wings. For IWC, it was a spectacular way of launching the new Pilot’s Watch Mark XV in Asian markets. Flying at 180 kilometres per hour, the JU-52 put in stopovers in Athens, Alexandria and Muscat on the way to Pakistan, and landed in Mumbai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. After promotional events in Manila, Hong Kong and Taipei, it reached Sendai airport in Japan. The venture drew the attention of journalists, film crews, watch lovers and aircraft enthusiasts worldwide, and was a major TV event in Asia. It suffered a terminal setback, however, when the Russian authorities refused the aircraft permission to fly in the country’s airspace and forced it to turn round. Despite this, the sensation created in the East exceeded even the most optimistic predictions and turned the IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XV into status symbol.

JU-AIR SECURES THE CONTINUED EXISTENCE OF THE JU-52

Wherever the sonorous drone of the three large nine-cylinderradial engines announces the presence of a JU-52, people simply stand and stare. Unveiled in 1939 and now very rare, the silver-coloured aircraft had an enormous following by the time the Swiss Air Force purchased them for pilot training and for transporting passengers and relief supplies. When the veteran aircraft were retired in 1981, Swiss airline JU-AIR, which had been founded specifically for the purpose of saving the JU-52 with its characteristic corrugated steel fuselage, launched a nationwide fund-raising campaign. It generated an unbelievable wave of goodwill and, on a single day alone, raised over 600,000 Swiss francs. Today, just eight airworthy JU-52s remain. The largest fleet, comprising four machines, is maintained and flown by JU-AIR,based in Dübendorf near Zurich, Switzerland. To this day, the JU-52 has remained synonymous with reliability, safety and quality workmanship, leaving its mark on civil aviation like few other aircraft. Privately owned and assisted by a team of enthusiastic volunteers, the company ensures that the legendary aircraft remain in service, and offers sightseeing flights that help to keep the legend up in the skies.

Ulysse Nardin unveils an exclusive skeleton tourbillon caliber incorporating the very latest silicium technology. It is an exquisite expression of the brand's pioneering spirit.

With this timepiece, the Le Locle-based Manufacture combines cutting-edge technology with an aesthetic exploration of the themes of transparency and simplicity. The Skeleton Tourbillon Manufacture is an impressive and unique contemporary timepiece that pays tribute to the brand’s prestigious past.

Purity and transparency.
Skeletonizing is a subtle art that requires both watchmaking know-how and an artistic sensibility. The aim is to reveal the inner workings of the movement by reducing the structure of components to a bare minimum, allowing light to penetrate freely through. Ulysse Nardin’s Skeleton Tourbillon Manufacture is a brilliant example of this endeavor.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The in-house movement seduces with its refined architecture and perfectly balanced proportions. The barrel at 12 o’clock mirrors the escapement placed at 6 o’clock. Above the latter is a ratchet wheel engraved with the brand name, insignia and the power reserve. Surfaces are decorated with an eye-catching contrast of bead-blasted and polished finishes. Color variations enhance the visual interest of metallic components.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

Crimson rubies sparkle among the hand-beveled bridges embellished with a satin-finish “sunray" decoration. Each train wheel is rhodium-plated. The blue of the steel screws echoes the azure tone of the silicon components. The specially designed hands are inspired by a gently curved leaf shape and are skeletonized at their tips. Recalling a Ulysse Nardin caliber from 1922, the back bears a screwed-in plate engraved with the serial number, making each timepiece unique.

Cutting-edge technique.
Since it was founded in 1846, Ulysse Nardin has distinguished itself with its pioneering approach. The accuracy and quality of its timepieces have forged an unrivalled reputation for the brand in the rarefied world of fine watchmaking. Perpetuating this spirit, Ulysse Nardin has been a forerunner in the use of silicon, which it featured in a watch for the first time in 2001.

The Skeleton Tourbillon Manufacture is an elegant showcase for this exceptional know-how: nestled within the hand-wound mechanical movement is a flying tourbillon that comprises a balance spring, anchor and escapement wheel made from silicon. The power reserve offers an impressive duration of 170 hours.
The Skeleton Tourbillon Manufacture is available in two limited editions: 200 pieces in rose gold and 200 pieces in white gold.

MIDO – Great Wall - Black Chronometer & Brown Chronometer

MIDO Great Wall Black & Brown Chronometer

A tribute to the grandiose architecture of the Great Wall of China, the Great Wall collection is enriched with two new models for men

Launched in 2012 by the watchmaker Mido, the Great Wall collection pays tribute to one of the boldest architectural achievements in history. Two new men’s models, the sporty Black Chronometer and the elegant Brown Chronometer, have joined the collection whose unique forms are inspired by the Great Wall of China. Reminiscent of the stones that pave this symbolic monument, their dials are worked in relief, whilst the striated disc that surrounds them and the fluted sides of their cases subtly evoke its impressive ramparts. The Black Chronometer and the Brown Chronometer are fitted with a COSC-certified automatic movement. Just like the famous structure, these two characteristic timepieces are distinguished by the singularity of their design and their robustness.

With its Great Wall collection, the watchmaker Mido has chosen to pay tribute to one of the world’s most impressive architectural achievements. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Great Wall of China is a unique construction and one of the most significant monuments ever built by Man. Taking its references from the very shapes of the wall, the Great Wall collection conveys both its robustness and timelessness, a mark of true design for Mido.

The two new models that join this collection are distinguished by the singularity of their design and their assertive masculine character. With a diameter of 42 mm, the steel case (black PVD-treated for the Black Chronometer and rose PVD-treated for the Brown Chronometer) reveals a dial worked in relief, a subtle evocation of the stones that pave the Great Wall. The centre of the dial is surrounded by a striated disc – punctuated by large applied indexes – which evoke the ramparts of the imposing monument, as do the fluted sides of the case. A window positioned at 3 o’clock reveals the day and the date.

The raised chequered patterns that adorn the rubber strap of the Black Chronometer are a further nod to the famous edifice, whilst the various touches of orange on the dial and hands recall Mido’s visual identity. The Brown Chronometer, however, features a brown leather strap, and an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, treated on both sides, protects the dial of both models. The hour and minute hands are Super-LumiNova® treated (orange for the Black chronometer and white for the Brown chronometer), offering perfect readability, even at night.

Robust and reliable, these two models are equipped with a COSC-certified chronometer automatic movement for precision in all conditions. Water-resistant up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 m / 330 ft), these timepieces both have a transparent case back which allows their finely decorated movement to be admired. Sporty or elegant, each of these two models will appeal to men who appreciate watches of character.

The Great Wall watch is also available in an entirely steel version (bracelet and case) with a black, anthracite or silver dial with nickel or black nickel indexes. A model with a silver dial and black leather strap is also available.

Arnold & Son – TES Tourbillon

ARNOLD & SONTES Tourbillon Limited Edition NEW

Timeless elegance and innovative technology:
Arnold & Son’s new TES Tourbillon

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...            BIG FOTO

True to English watchmaking heritage, Arnold & Son unveils the TES Tourbillon, with the hand-finished A&S8100 calibre with sapphire barrel bridge. This defining timepiece is part of the Royal Collection which combines classic styling with leading-edge technology.

The tourbillon movement, one of the most elegant complications in the world of horology, has played a crucial role in Arnold & Son’s history. An exceptional watchmaker, John Arnold was an active participant in one of the most extraordinary partnerships in the world of innovative horology. Indeed, both he and A.L. Breguet worked closely, sharing both their knowledge and passion. Evidence of their partnership is A.L. Breguet’s first ever tourbillon mounted in John Arnold’s No. 11 movement, a watch that can be found today in London’s British Museum.

Aesthetically what sets Arnold & Son’s new TES Tourbillon apart is its modern take on the distinguished “English” movement design: the barrel bridge for instance has the traditional English wave-form but is made out of sapphire to allow a maximum view on the openworked barrel and wheels. The tourbillon and motion-work bridges are classically triangular but are skeletonised. The combination of sapphire and open-worked bridges gives an incredible depth and threedimensional effect to the watch and thus a modern look.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...            BIG FOTO

The unique Arnold & Son design is also reflected by the three-spoke wheels. This same three-spoke design can also be found in the tourbillon cage and the openings in the main plate. The decoration of the main plate is a reminiscence of an old guilloché pattern found on the cases of antique Arnold & Son pocket watches. The main plate is also skeletonised around the barrel and the tourbillon carriage allowing to look through the movement and therefore through the watch itself.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...            BIG FOTO

When compared to more conventional tourbillons found today, the TES model is said to be “inverted”, that is to say most technical elements and visually interesting features are shown on the dial side, when those would normally be hidden on the reverse of the dial. Other typically English technical idiosyncrasies will seduce even the most demanding watch connoisseurs.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...            BIG FOTO

Take, for instance, the solid gold chatons or the symmetrical layout of the movement; to achieve such a feat requires overcoming a number of technical challenges. Thus the barrel spring and the tourbillon cage are centred along the watch’s longitudinal axis. When examining the winding system, one notes the traditional construction, which uses wheels with long and narrow spokes known as wolf’s teeth, used to improve the smoothness of the overall movement.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...            BIG FOTO

It goes without saying that every finishing touch on this striking piece, with such movement decoration as hand-chamfered bridges and, even more demanding, hand-chamfered wheels with polished edges has been done by hand by Arnold & Son’s master watchmakers, hence bringing more brilliance and depth to each decorative element.
