This superlative work engages us immediately on a physical level and one can only stand in awe at the commitment, patience and dedication required to create these works of art. The work of Art shown here, using the techniques of lacquering which takes far more than thousand hours of work to complete the dial and bridges. The raw materials for its creation are: Kinpun (gold dust), Jyunkin-itakane (gold leaf), Yakou-gai (shell of great green turban) and Awabi-gai (abalone shell from New Zealand).

Since ancient times, “Hojyu", a sacred ball-shape gem has been said to have the power to purge (keep off) evil spirits and to fulfill a wish.

The vermilion-lacquered second with gold describes a Hojyu with an auspicious omen motif and generate the energy (the power) into the time by representing a flame.

The distinguished wheel with a traditional Raden pattern converts the diffusion of energetic particle spreading on the bridge into an ordered power to provide to the watch.

This symbiosis of Japanese tradition with the Swiss haute horlogerie creations of Kari Voutilainen represents an all-embracing mechanical and visual work of art that unites the East and West in perfect harmony.

Today we are happy to share article about another new watch which should be present in Basel. At the moment we have only one photo that is shown above, but it’s more than enough to display the beauty of the “Vingt-8”, new model from Voutilainen.

The Voutilainen Vingt-8 wristwatch perfectly encapsulates the philosophy of Kari Voutilainen. Its elegant and strong mechanism is housed in a stylish and robust case. The in-house movement of the Vingt-8 was designed, built, fabricated, finished and assembled in its entirety in Voutilainen workshops. The movement has a very large balance wheel manufactured in-house, allowing perfect regulation of the watch to within strict tolerances.

In keeping with the most classic watchmaking traditions, all the watches emerging from the Voutilainen workshops are designed, built, produced, finished and assembled in-house. This Manufacture is equipped with a ‘natural’ escapement built by Kari Voutilainen. It features a balance-spring with a Breguet overcoil and a Grossmann inner curve.

What’s unusual here? Well, this watch is a truly work of art among watches, and let me explain why. The escapement makes the movement very special; this is the first watch to have two escapement wheels in such a configuration. The escapement wheels give a direct impulse to the balance through the impulse roller/jewel. This escapement is extremely efficient and requires much less energy than traditional lever escapements, offering benefits in terms of longevity and stability in day-to-day use.

The balance-wheel bridge is sublimely elegant, offering an unimpeded view of the escapement and balance. It also allows the enthusiast to admire the synchronized movements of the escapement wheels. Of course, it’s not only the movement, but also finish, which make new watch special.

The surfaces of pinions and wheels are completely flat and highly polished to within exceptionally uniform tolerances. All finishing work on the main plate and bridges is done by hand to achieve the highest possible levels of surface finish. Screws and all steel parts are also finished and polished by hand. Dial of the watch is made entirely in Voutilainen workshop.

Dial is engine turned by hand. In center, there is transparent enamel, highly polished to be able to admire reflects of guilloche work. Hands are made from gold and steel, due to special treatment they have elegant and visible metallic color.

The wheels and pinions are perfectly polished, the bridges and mainplate are in German silver and hand-finished to superlative levels. All the steel parts are polished and hand-chamfered. This refined approach is also reflected on the dial of the Vingt-8. A solid silver base is guilloché-worked with a trompe l’oeil motif. Two zones appear to be magnified by an optical illusion created by a subtle variation in the guilloché pattern.

The Voutilainen GMT-6 wristwatch embodies the perfection enshrined in Kari Voutilainen’s philosophy. The elegant and robust mechanism is housed in a sturdy and stylish case.

The proprietary movement of the GMT-6 was entirely conceived, designed, produced, finished and assembled in Voutilainen workshops. The design and philosophy of the movement combine respect for longevity and precision, in classic watchmaking tradition.

To equip this exceptional timepiece, a unique and very rare balance-spring system has been used. The outside is a Philips overcoil, while the inner terminal follows the less common Grossmann principle.

The watch’s outstanding feature is its escapement; it is the first watch to present two escape-wheels in such a configuration. The escape-wheels provide a direct impulse to the balance through the roller/jewel. This escapement is extremely efficient and requires less energy than traditional lever escapements, offering gains in terms of longevity and stability in everyday use.

A GMT mechanism is integrated in the movement. Its indicator takes the form of a disc at 6 o’clock. The disc shows 24 hours and includes a day/night indicator. The triangle transferred to the subsidiary seconds dial represents the index by which the indication can be read. The disc is advanced by pressing the crown, each press moving the disc forward one hour at a time. Disks are engine turned by hand and they have transparent grand feu enamel in blue and orange on it.

Finishing of the watch is of the very highest standard. The surfaces of pinions and wheels are totally flat and perfectly polished to exceptionally uniform tolerances. All finishing work on the main plate and bridges is carried out by hand to attain the best possible surface finish. Screws and all steel surfaces are finished and polished by hand. 
 
The case, in platinum, measures 39 mm. It has an enamelled double back and an 18kt white gold crown. Sapphire crystals front and rear with glare-proof treatment Case back is engine turned by hand and it has transparent enamel in blue color Grand Feu.

Engine-turned dial, done in solid silver and gold with transparent Grand Feu enamel in red color. Gold applied numerals with satin finish and satin finished gold hands.  It comes on a black hand-stitched crocodile leather strap with an 18kt white gold buckle.

As befits such a virtuoso of complicated timepieces, this new watch by Kari Voutilainen incorporates a second time zone with 24-hour indicator and a retrograde power-reserve indicator. As always, the movement is developed and hand-crafted from start to finish inside the master watchmaker's workshops, in the peace and tranquillity of the Swiss village of Môtiers.

Fashioned from maillechort, this top-flight mechanical movement comprises no fewer than 250 parts and 28 jewels.

An ingenious mechanism allows the second time zone to be adjusted by the crown, jumping one hour at each push, rather than turning freely, thus maintaining absolute precision with local time. The movement's traditional finishes of Côtes de Genève and hand-chamfering can be admired through the sapphire crystal back, while the dial exudes refined elegance.
