URWERK – UR-120 aka Spock

The UR-120 aka Spock
« Live long and prosper! »

Hand up, palm forward, fingers parted in the middle, and then the greeting: « Live long and prosper! » This is a meme known to all Trekkies, almost a world heritage, a salutation that rings like a blessing. This sign is also an integral part of URWERK's brand DNA. It's had pride of place on a wall of the Geneva workshop for ages. And now, so does it above the mainplate of the new UR-120, whose time display reproduces the Vulcan salute. Such is the latest challenge Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei have taken on, with the hope that it too shall live long and prosper.

At the crossroad of technical advancement, watchmaking development and space-time inspiration, the UR-120 is a new stage in the constant mutation of the URWERK species. This UR-120 furthers the codes of the UR-110 collection and reshapes its concept. Martin Frei, co-founder and Artistic Director of the brand, goes back up on the ring for a new challenge, 11 years after the UR-110 won the Design Watch Prize at the 2011 GPHG. « I just loved the UR-110, but there were so many other ways to go about it, to keep it evolving...That's what a designer's mind is like. The process is never-ending. » And so Martin Frei went back to the drawing board. « The idea was to go in a thinner, smoother, more elegant direction. To do that, we redesigned the entire satellite system. Each satellite is now made of two sub-elements to make it thinner, easier to read and to give it unprecedented fluidity. »

This new satellite display of the UR-120 was born 16.5 million light-years from Earth, in the Beta Quadrant. That's where the original inspiration for its display, a V-shaped open hand, is customary: in Mr. Spock's civilization, on Vulcan. It relies on rotating satellites which split open so they can spin, each on their own axis. This unprecedented innovation allows for a substantial gain in thickness.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It translates into a unique volume. At 44 mm long, 47 mm wide and 15.8 mm thick, the UR-120 case stands out with its perfect sense of ergonomics. Maximum height is reached in the middle of the sapphire glass, at the apex of a gentle curve. The upper part of the case is totally smooth, without a single screw or notch, offering perfectly fluid lines.

Driving force

The latest celestial object in URWERK's constellation relies on splitting satellites. Inside calibre UR-20.01, the central carousel is fitted with three arms, each one bearing a satellite. All four sides of said satellite bears an hour marker.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When it exits the minute track and reaches the left part of the case, it actuates a trigger that commands the changing of the satellite face. The latter then shows its true nature with an unprecedented kinematic sequence.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The satellite splits open, revealing two rectangular studs. They take on a V shape, thus recreating the Vulcan salute that ultimately gave the UR-120 its nickname. Once separated, both studs spin on their own axis and shut, all in order to display the new hour unit.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

There is a triple revolution taking place under the hood of this spacecraft: the satellite-bearing carousel spins on a central axis, each satellite counter-spins in order to remain upright and therefore readable and each stud spins on its own axis.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The other aspects of the display remain typical of the original URWERK species: the satellite carousel moves along the minute track sector, located at the right-hand side of the case. The side shown by the satellite and its position on that scale tell the hour and the minute.

Creative energy

« In truth, when we realized we were going to have to open the satellite, I was over the moon, says Felix Baumgartner, URWERK's co-founder and master watchmaker. Our biggest challenge has always been to manage forces. At the exact moment of the salute, a lyre-shaped spring opens and then closes the satellite. Managing energy then and there is complex and very subtle. We need to manage the opening AND the stud rotation. We ended up manufacturing the spring ourselves, in-house, because we had to go through so many trials while defining its geometry and thickness. With the UR-120, we also experienced a considerable gain in readability: the hour markers these opening studs allowed have grown bigger by 35% compared to the UR-110. »
Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As a rule, the way URWERK's creations are built and their dimensions result from technical constraints, and chief among them, the volume requirement of the display. A major part of URWERK's very nature is the ability to turn this spatial constraint into a design and watchmaking showmanship opportunity. It then becomes part of the global conversation on imagination, dreaming and the creative drive that keeps watches moving forward.

Principles of ergonomics

On top of this new watchmaking system and the volume it allows, UR-120 heralds several new design elements. Martin Frei acknowledges a personal interpretation of Gerald Genta's own design approach. « I've always loved the way his cases are constructed, with an intertwined lower case and upper case. Technically speaking, that's very smart. » And so, the UR-120 case is made up of two interlocking parts, equivalent to a caseback and a bezel. They connect seamlessly with the help of lateral screws.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO
A further element of fluidity is provided by the presence of lugs on the UR-120, which are a rare occurrence in the line of URWERK creations. What's more, they're articulated. Inside the one located at 6 o'clock, URWERK has fitted a spring, which is part of the way the strap rests on and sticks to the wrist. The material this strap is made of is another novelty. Rather than its traditional technical fabric, URWERK went for calf leather, embossed with a ballistic-type pattern. It's reminiscent of a woven nylon while offering superior comfort and flexibility.

First edition

UR-120's first series takes on an almost entirely gray form. The upper-case part, the bezel, is made of finely sandblasted steel. The lower part is made of sandblasted titanium and opens up a new design era.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A small window offers a direct view on the Windfänger, the star-shaped component which regulates the automatic winding intensity. In the center, a large medallion harbors two types of finishing: deep grooves all over and at 9 o'clock, a plaque bearing the URWERK monogram. The crown is crafted out of steel and the strap is also gray.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

That monochromatic continuum is interspersed with golden shards. All Maltese crosses and lyre-shaped springs are 24ct-gold PVD treated, which underlines the technical aspects of this timepiece. Not unlike the Bussard ramjets at the front of the Enterprise's warp engines.

« Live long and prosper! »

URWERK – UR-100V UltraViolet Titanium Automatic

 URWERK and its UR-100V UltraViolet.
Beyond colors

Violet! This magnificent shade is located at the far end of the visible colour spectrum perceptible to the human eye. Anything beyond violet is outside the field of colour. Violet is the ultimate hue. That of the fighters, the outsiders, the crazies. Heroes or villains? It doesn't matter. If you need to make yourself heard, do it in violet!

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Martin Frei talks about the colour that is so special to him: "I like the fact that a colour is much more than what we can perceive. The colour spectrum visible to our eyes ranges from red to violet. Beyond that shade, colour turns into a waveform that our eyes can no longer detect, ultraviolet. I am fascinated by the idea of creating a watch that celebrates this boundary, this tipping point, this transition from perceptible to imperceptible. The UR-100V UltraViolet is about this exploration of the limits. Our UltraViolet conveys something mystical, it's a hue that sits on the border of a dimension we call colour."

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Fitted with a rubber strap, the UR-100V UltraViolet picks up the codes of the 100 family. On the UR-100V, the satellite hours and minutes display is complemented by new information. Once the 60th minute has been reached, the minutes hand vanishes and reappears as a kilometre counter. It illustrates the 555 kilometres travelled every 20 minutes by every inhabitant of Planet Earth. This is in fact the average speed of rotation of the Earth calculated at the Equator (rotational distance). Appearing exactly opposite is the Earth's revolution around the sun (orbital distance), i.e. 35,740 kilometres per 20 minutes. On the face of the UR-100V, hours and kilometres thus share the same status, the same scale of value. These units are lit up at night in incandescent blue for the hours and in flamboyant green for the kilometres.

Felix Baumgartner, master watchmaker and co-founder of URWERK says: "This creation was inspired by a gift from my father, Geri Baumgartner, a renowned restorer of antique clocks. It is a clock made by Gustave Sandoz for the 1893 World Exhibition and its particularity lies in the fact that instead of showing the hours, it indicates the rotational distance travelled by the Earth at the Equator.”

Beating beneath the dome of the UR-100V is the new URWERK Calibre 12.02 with its three-satellite time display. "The change of calibre for this version is reflected in the redesign of the central carousel. The hour-markers are placed closer to the minutes scale for an even more intuitive and fluid reading of the time”, explains Felix Baumgartner. This carousel is forged in aluminium and then sanded and shot-blasted after anodising. Each of the satellite screws is satin-finished in a circular pattern. The satellites rest on a sanded and ruthenium-treated brass carousel. The structure covering the hours indication is made of sanded and shot-blasted aluminium. The UR-100V's automatic winding is governed by a bidirectional rotor regulated by a Windfänger airscrew.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The aesthetics of the UR-100V's case is a regressive pleasure. It will indeed remind the URWERK faithful of the aesthetics characterising the first models from the independent brand: "We have taken certain aesthetic elements from our first constructions and destructured our approach. For example, the steel dome of our historic models is reproduced here through the transparency of sapphire crystal. Its perfection is highlighted by the roughness of the titanium and steel case. As someone who constantly questions the dictates of symmetry, I have played with proportions to challenge the eye”,

sums up Martin Frei

URWERK – UR-100V Time and Culture I Edition

URWERK UR-SATELLITE UR-100V Time and Culture I” Automatic Edition 2022

URWERK – BIRTH OF THE UR-100V TIME AND CULTURE LINE

Writing time, transcribing the intangible, giving substance to the passing hours. For thousands of years, this has been one of the "impossible missions" assigned to the masters of time. From the pyramids of the City of Ur to the gnomons from China and lunar calendars engraved in rock, they have incessantly deployed their genius, inventiveness and even pugnacity in testifying to the passing of days and hours.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is to this quasi-heroic work that URWERK pays tribute today with its new 100V Time and Culture line. Introducing the first episode based on an original idea of 👉 SJX

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The new line of the 100V, dedicated to perceptions of time through the ages and cultures, has been named Time and Culture. "This line is about History, Cultures, our place beneath the stars, the research and observations that have been conducted around the world using the same sky above our heads as a source of knowledge. I am always fascinated to see that these unique observations, made thousands of kilometres away, have given birth to a universal language, that of time”, explains URWERK co-founder Martin Frei. We are therefore literally being treated to a journey through space-time. And to materialise such a journey, the UR-100V, combining indications expressed in minutes and kilometres, proved to be the ideal vehicle.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The first stop in the 100V Time and Culture line takes us to the lands of Central America, around the year 1479. The pediment of this timepiece features the motifs of the "Sun Stone", one of the most emblematic works of Aztec art, now preserved in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City. This monolith is a sculpted disc approximately 3.6 metres in diameter. Imposing. Massive. This masterful work refers to the Aztec calendar, with the third circle representing the 20 days of the month, the fourth the 260 days of the year.

This pattern is therefore repeated on the copper-coloured dome of the UR-100V Time and Culture I. The result is exquisitely delicate. The milling cutter used for the engraving has a 0.05 mm-thin point. The work must therefore be admired with a magnifying glass to appreciate its precision. The ridge lines of the motif are satin-brushed, while the hollows are micro-sandblasted to obtain a velvety finish, in order to highlight the volumes and honour this priceless heritage.

Beauty, history and mysticism are intertwined. The universal significance of this new URWERK is further reinforced by learning that the source of inspiration for this piece comes from Singapore. Su Jia Xian, better known by his acronym SJX, put forward an idea to Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei three years ago: adding an extra dimension to the UR-100 by closing the top just like on the first edition of the UR-103, creating something special that transcends space and time, literally and figuratively.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The UR-100V Time and Culture I has thus gained a foothold in Central America. Felix Baumgartner, co-founder of URWERK, adds, "This timepiece has several interpretative keys, starting with its obvious universal significance: it is inspired by the Aztec culture; it was made in Switzerland, based on an idea from Singapore; it will end up in the windows of a retailer whose nationality is not yet known, and it will appeal to an equally unknown watch lover. Yet it also conceals certain secrets. We have sprinkled our work with hidden references. The discerning eye will be able to make out a signature, an acronym, a Mayan numbering to be deciphered.  It's a real treasure hunt.”

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On this UR-100V from the Time and Culture line, a new piece of information is added to the hours and minutes display. Once the 60th minute has passed, the minutes hand disappears and reappears as a kilometre counter. It illustrates the 524.89 kilometres covered every 20 minutes by any person located in Mexico

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This is the average speed of the Earth's rotation calculated at Mexico City. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Earth's revolution around the sun is displayed, i.e. 35,742 kilometres per 20 minutes. On the face of the UR-100V, hours and kilometres thus share the same status, the same scale of value. These units are lit up in incandescent blue when reading the hours.

URWERK – UR-102 “Gaïa” ONLY WATCH Unique Edition

URWERK UR-SATELLITE UR-102 GaïaONLY WATCH Unique Edition

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is an iconic model, jealously safeguarded until now at the heart of the watch Maison, since it marks the beginning of the URWERK adventure in the 1990s. The foundation stone. A watch of almost disconcerting simplicity, with a wandering hour as its only marker of time.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The UR-102. This one-of-a-kind model in asphalt-coloured anodised aluminium with a platinum caseback has been newly enhanced with a midnight blue lacquer. It will be auctioned on 6 November 2021 on behalf of the "Only Watch" charity to fund research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

This unique piece embodies the wild aspirations of a team composed young dreamers who had only just graduated – from the School of Arts for Martin Frei and from the Solothurn Watchmaking School for Felix Baumgartner and his brother. In 1997, they set out to conquer the world, armed with a brilliant idea and modest capital.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Their first watch, the UR-102, was presented at the Baselworld watch fair on the booth of the AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants). This model ran resolutely counter to existing and generated a certain amount of controversy at the time its launch. It is now the symbol of victorious pugnacity, of salutary stubbornness. What a destiny!

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

"We have chosen to name this model ‘Gaïa’. We recently had the immense honour of receiving the Gaïa Prize* for Entrepreneurship from our peers. This award recognises a journey from oblivion to the limelight, along with tenacity, conviction and pugnacity that have repeatedly been put to the test. This model reflects this fierce determination that blazes new trails. We dedicate this symbol of hope to all those who struggle to make things happen”, said URWEK co-founders Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This UR-102 is unique in many ways. It is undoubtedly one of the first watch creations to honour a mixed-genre approach merging the common metal aluminium with the nobility of platinum.
Its full, round shape is seamlessly smooth. Framed by precious platinum, the caseback features an interpretation of the Gaïa prize, a dazzling flight of fancy symbolising URWERK’s unswerving resolve to reach for the stars.

URWERK – UR-100V “Blue Planet” Automatic Edition

 URWERK UR-SATELLITE UR-100VBlue Planet” Automatic Edition 2021

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

URWERK’s horological Skunk Works launches a series of 25 time - and space - measuring instruments into orbit. UR-100V “Blue Planet” tracks the earth and our solar system: it’s a 24-hour invitation to interstellar travel and the pleasure of savoring time.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

With interplanetary imagination, science-fiction iconography and limitless creative freedom, URWERK has its roots in spatial horology. Using out-of-this-world graphic traits inherent to all URWERK timepieces, the UR-100V collection adds an astrophysical dimension.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The astronomical action takes place under a large observation dome, where, upon finishing indicating the minutes in the 0-to-60 arc along the bottom of the dial, the vivid green and yellow arrowhead hand (one of three) disappears – only to reappear at 9 o'clock to track the 555.55 kilometers the earth rotates at the equator every 20 minutes. The hand then reappears again at 3 o'clock to display a kilometer counter tracking 20 minutes of the earth's revolution around the sun (35,742 kilometers).

Nearby

Blending form and function, calculation and imagery, and theory and actuality, the UR-100V is adorned in blue: blue for the steel case, blue for the atypical movement, blue for the orbital carousel. A blue recalling our planet earth.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The blue hue of the UR-100V “Blue Planet” is deep, dense, and matte. As URWERK’s designer Martin Frei explains: “When I create and when I paint, all colors resonate in me, but particularly blue. During my education at the Academy of Arts and Design in Lucerne, I had the chance to study the great Florentine artist Giotto. He was the first who, at the end of the Middle Ages, painted the sky blue — dethroning Byzantine gold — and launching the ‘realistic’ style of painting is normal today. I love the color of Giotto’s blue sky; it’s the same sky as ours. Blue is a color that surrounds us, that encompasses us. "

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Almost all of the elements of the movement, including the automatic rotor regulated by its Windfänger turbine and the entire satellite hour display system, are also blue – as are the technical canvas strap and buckle. The most visible screws are in flame-blued titanium using a technique unique to the Baumgartner family.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

My father was cult-like in his devotion to the technique of bluing hands. His search for the perfect blue was his search for the Holy Grail. He tested countless types of sand and found his grail in Corsican sand, which we religiously brought back in our suitcases from vacations,” says watchmaker Felix Baumgartner.

Against this uniform blue background, the fluorescent yellow and green arrowhead hand is a shooting star.

Metaphorical

The color of the UR-100V “Blue Planet” tells the story of a trajectory transitioning between earth and space. “We have miniaturized and reinterpreted our solar system. We get lost in the depths of the rotating carousel of the UR-100V.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is a plunge into space, a fall into nothingness. It's a new horological odyssey with our head in the stars and feet on the ground. It’s a reverie in blue,” concludes Felix Baumgartner.
