URWERK – UR-100V T-Rex Edition

 URWERKUR-SATELLITE UR-100VT-Rex” Bronze/Titanium Edition - 2021

UR-100V T-Rex: waiting to be tamed

T-Rex is the name given to the latest iteration of Urwerk’s UR-100 collection. It carries both Urwerk’s genome in its satellite hours and that of its namesake in the primal texture of its reinforced hide of bronze. The UR-100V T-Rex is decidedly a creature you’ll want to tame.

But wouldn’t want to stroke the eight-ton, 12-foot high Tyrannosaurus rex. In addition to its massive jaws equipped with 60 dagger-like teeth, it has a hide like a rasp. Best leave the creature to your imagination.

You might prefer to handle its namesake. The 41-mm UR-100V T-Rex features satellite wandering hours and a new type of selfwinding system. However, its hide, in a mosaic of scales, has a somewhat more sensual texture. It’s a watch for those who relish the sensational — and the rare — for only 22 are made.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Its case is in solid bronze that has undergone three successive treatments. The first lies in the unusual composition of the alloy which results in a delicate patina. The bronze is then in the hands of a computer-controlled milling station that carves the pattern of scales on the top and sides of the case. The final processes, sand-blasting and Urwerk’s proprietary method of biochemical burnishing, give the watch its distinctive colour.

The scales, in the form of raised lozenges, cover the head and sides of this magnificent reptile and surround the flattened dome of sapphire crystal and the big knurled crown. The bevelled pyramids have been truncated and polished to present a surface that is pleasing to the touch, while the PVD blackened titanium caseback is fully skin compatible.

Nobody knows whether the ancient dinosaur had a voice, but the T-Rex watch certainly knows how to express itself. In Urwerk’s animal kingdom, the signature satellite indication does the talking. Three satellites, each of four hours, rotate on a three-armed carousel. In turn, each satellite, displaying the hour, carries a red pointer along a  60-minute scale.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The regular orbit of the hours, as old as time itself, replicates the planetary dance in miniature. The watch is wound while you wear it by a rotor. This is coupled to a device called the Windfänger that is specific to the UR-100 models. It’s  a planetary gear that limits the action of the rotor to avoid overwinding and excessive wear.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Finally, the UR-100V T-Rex has a feature that puts other watches into the dinosaur age. Once the red pointer of the satellite hours has completed its 60-minute journey, it reappears to show the distance travelled by our planet.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the scale at 9 o'clock on the case the pointer shows the 555.5 km travelled by a point on the equator in a period of 20 minutes. The 20-minute scale on the other side of the dial shows the 35,742 km Earth travels in its orbit around the sun in that time.

URWERK – EMC TimeHunter Desert Sage Edition

URWERKUR-Chronometry EMC TimeHunter Desert Sage Edition 2020

URWERK presents the EMC Time Hunter
in its Desert Sage version

Out-of-the-box, out of competition and out of this world as befits any URWERK creation, the new EMC TimeHunter features an unprecedented surface finishing ensuring an amazing result: a military beige chronometer teamed with a camouflage canvas strap that earns it the nickname Desert Sage. This watch is a fighter, a tough nut to crack. Its shell withstands the test of time thanks to a ceramic-type lacquer treatment. The latter, beyond its protective properties, beautifully enhances the finely grained surface of the micro-beadblasted steel.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

URWERK's most ‘chronometric’ collection thus returns to the forefront and takes its place in military-style territory, complete with a technical vocabulary and urban grammar.

Style serving function

The EMC Time Hunter Desert Sage belongs to the UR-Chronometry family, which encompasses URWERK watchmaking concepts dedicated to outstanding precision. They indeed offer the unique possibility of measuring and adjusting the rate of their movement.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

An EMC Time Hunter is essentially a dual measuring instrument. Like a compass, a sextant, a machine tool, its appearance and even its surface all signal its nature. The EMC Desert Sage is crafted from steel and its caseback from titanium. Its aesthetic is not round, square or cushion-like, nor indeed any of URWERK’s signature indefinable shapes. This hyper-technical "machine" hugs the contours of the ‘motor’ inside and submits to the constraints of its various organs. It is not symmetrical, regular, flat or curved, yet remains aesthetically pleasing and distinctive. EMC's design obeys its function, transcending existing rules to create a unique personality.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Moreover, its stainless steel ‘hood’ is micro-beadblasted and then given a hard, matt ceramic lacquer-type treatment. As a result, the surface of the EMC Time Hunter Desert Sage has a grainy finish reminiscent of military equipment.

Legibility

The same functionalism reigns supreme on the dial with its matt black surfaces. Each indication zone has its own clearly marked space. Each unit is painted with fluorescent green Super-LumiNova®, a neon-type colour frequently used by URWERK due to its perfect contrasts. In addition to the main dial with its chequered hand grenade pattern, which displays the hours and minutes, the EMC Time Hunter features a small disc-type seconds hand at 1 o’clock, graduated in five-second increments and located at 1 o'clock. It is complemented by a power-reserve indicator at 7 o'clock, which provides information on the state-of-wind of the hand-wound movement offering a maximum 80 hours of autonomy.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO
The indications linked to the chronometric (precision timekeeping) monitoring function are concentrated at 11 o'clock and indicated by the "EM Control" marking on the screw-down bezel. The rate accuracy is graduated from -15 to +15, using seconds as the measurement unit for the daily rate deviation. The amplitude ranges from 180 to 330, measured in degrees.

Heart and brain

At the very heart of the EMC concept lies a hybrid electronic/mechanical system that makes each of these timepieces totally one-of-a-kind, bestriding two worlds. It is an entirely mechanical watch, optimised with the help of an electro-optical circuit. On the one hand, its hand-wound movement stems from the mind and hands of URWERK. Designed exclusively for the EMC collections, the UR-EMC2 calibre is entirely crafted, finished, assembled and adjusted by URWERK.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On the other hand, it incorporates an electronic module whose function is to measure the rate of the mechanical part. It has its own power source, separate from the rest of the movement. Positioned on the side of the case, a large retractable lever raises a dynamo which feeds the control micro-circuit.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thanks to its laser diode, it is able to collect two essential data relating to the movement. Pointing towards the balance, it reads its amplitude (an indicator of the movement’s state of health) and the rate deviation (which is an indicator of accuracy), while comparing them to an internal clock. The latter takes the form of a processor operating at a frequency of 16 MHz and serves as a reference oscillator, i.e. a benchmark. On one side, the ‘engine’; and on the other, the control unit. Yet these two entities are not sealed off from each other, quite the contrary. They are integrated, nested and URWERK has created a means of access to both that makes EMC Time Hunter the world’s only truly wearer-adjustable watch

🔺 URWERK UR-Chronometry EMC TimeHunter CERAMIC
------------------------------------------------

A timing adjustment screw makes it possible to manually fine-tune the oscillation speed of the balance and thus to correct the variations in rate that inevitably appear over time and are intimately dependent on the use made of the watch by its wearer. This corrector is located on the back of the watch and is duly indicated by the engraving "Fine Tuning". It manages the behaviour of the movement at its very heart, by modifying the length of the regulating balance-spring.

Aesthetic power

More than just timepieces for precision watchmaking fanatics, more than just interactive objects, more than hybrids combining the best of mechanical watchmaking with the possibilities afforded by microelectronics, EMC TimeHunter Desert Sage watches are truly living timepieces.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

While they were admittedly born within the URWERK circle of horology and design geeks, the purely scientific approach gives rise above all else to truly inimitable watches. Ultra-legible, razor-sharp and hyper-urban, each one transcends its functionalities to enter the realm of pure style.

URWERK – UR-210 Last Edition

URWERKSATELLITE UR-210 Last Edition

The seven wonders of the UR-210

URWERK will unveil the last edition of its iconic UR-210 on June 17, so now is the ideal time to highlight the seven features that have made the UR-210 so special

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Marine chronometer inspiration

"To develop the UR-210 and ensure its precision and long term performance, I drew inspiration from the watchmaking culture that my father instilled in me," explains Felix Baumgarter. "My father Gerhard Baumgartner, a clock restorer renowned for his extensive knowledge and watchmaking skill, was my first teacher.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Ever since I was five years old, I could enter his workshop to discover, and sometimes even touch, the antique mechanical masterpieces he was restoring. My superheroes were Thomas Thompion, Antide Janvier, Abraham Louis Breguet, and Ferdinand Berthoud. It’s thanks to what I learned as a child at my father’s side that URWERK today is at the forefront of innovation."

Retrograde system

The UR-210 has one of the largest retrograde systems available. "We wanted it to be oversized, to the limit of the possible. The UR-210 retrograde hand is a complex mechanism that docks with the hour satellites while indicating the minutes.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The first tests were epic. The system was so extraordinary, and the force released so strong, that it overpowered the mechanics. We had to refine the system to find just the right compromise between power and speed to finalize the design. To appreciate the complexity of this movement in full, you must not only observe the minute hand fly back from 60 to 0, but listen to it too. It's the sharp "clack" it makes that signals the beginning of each new hour." Felix Baumgartner.

Winding efficiency

The UR-210 features an entirely new type of automatic winding efficiency indication that has been granted a patent. It indicates whether the user has generated enough power over the last two hours of use to keep the UR-210’s mainspring sufficiently wound. It is a very personal indication that changes with the wearer’s actions.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO
The more you move, the more your watch displays appreciation by indicating green. This is a sentimental indication between the wearer and their watch. "I like the idea of a fusional interaction between an owner and their watch. The UR-210 displays the time, provides a visual spectacle of its operation, and helps its wearer learn a little more about themselves: it’s a pedometer for the wrist." Martin Frei.

Turbines

It is thanks to the UR-210 that URWERK has been able to refine and perfect our turbine regulation automatic winding system.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The goal was to offer as much user control as possible by being able to select and refine the winding mode. "I started my career in the after-sales service of major watch brands and had to deal with recurring problems caused by the premature wear components, so we developed a system that minimized the problem. The turbines on the UR-210 are inspired by the regulators used in grande sonnerie movements." Felix Baumgartner

 Aesthetics 1

"A protective band frames the complexly shaped sapphire crystal glass of the
UR210 There is a certain amount of G-Shock in this design element. I like a three-dimensional topography of the case because it encourages both the eyes and hands to interact with it. The distinctive form empowers the case iconic character." Martin Frei

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Aesthetics 2

The UR-210 is one of the most symmetrical pieces designed by URWERK. "All of our creations though have an organic character with irregularities and points of division.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The UR-210 is architectural or sculptural in its construction, which reflects my interest and connection with the architectural firm I share my office with. The extremely three-dimensional volume and crystal dome is pure URWERK, all while offering highly legible graphics and indications." Martin Frei

Recognition

"I had an early prototype of the UR-210 in my pocket during Baselworld 2012 and had not yet presented it to anyone, partly superstition but mainly because we wanted to finalize it before submitting it for review. Philippe Dufour visited our booth, and as a true watch lover he never misses the opportunity visit colleagues and is happy to give advice.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

So Mr. Dufour was the first to see a working prototype of the UR-210 and, despite URWERK’s avant -gard style being the complete opposite of his, he liked it! Mr. Dufour’s approval comforted us in our approach. Since then, we have been fortunate to see the UR-210 on the wrist of celebrities, including Ralph Lauren and Michael Jordan, But the emotion of Mr. Dufour with our ‘UFO’ on his wrist remains one of my most beautiful memories." Felix Baumgartner

GREUBEL FORSEY & URWERK – Naissance d’une Montre 2

Time Æon FoundationGREUBEL FORSEY & URWERKNaissance d’une Montre 2 Edition - Unique Project 2020

Naissance d’une Montre 2

Under the aegis of the Time Æon Foundation, Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey, Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei have chosen to support a new project by two young and talented watchmakers: Dominique Buser and Cyrano Devanthey of Oscillon.swiss . The functional prototype movement will be prensented at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2019.

A hand-made watch

Having completed the creation of their first watch, Dominique Buser and Cyrano Devanthey are embarking on a new adventure with the support of some of the greatest creator watchmakers in contemporary mechanical watchmaking: Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey and Felix Baumgartner, all active members of the foundation, as well as the renowned watch designer Martin Frei.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This new watch will be entirely crafted using the traditional, hand-made methods valued by the foundation’s members. The adventure is above all a human one, telling the story of a traditional craft passed down from master to apprentice for centuries.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is not a case of creating a watch in a historical style, but rather perpetuating a craft that, while rooted in the past, has proven itself to be entirely contemporary. Mechanical watchmaking is in fact a «living material» that never ceases to enrich and renew itself through the generations.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Mouvement - NM2
------------------------------

Hand-crafting a watch using historical machines means breaking free from industrial constraints and therefore rediscovering total creative freedom. When adopting this approach, we can no longer talk of a «product», but rather an authentic piece of work whose soul is truly a reflection of its creators.

Dominique Buser and Cyrano Devanthey

Dominique Buser and Cyrano Devanthey met while studying watchmaking at the École d’Horlogerie de Soleure. On graduating they went their separate ways, only to meet again a few years later at the Urwerk watchmaking manufacture. Reunited, the two watchmakers discovered a shared passion for historical watchmaking tools. For twenty years they acquired old machine-tools, which they then restored and learned to use, gleaning knowledge from the elders of the profession where necessary.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It was therefore a logical step for them to come up with the idea of hand-crafting a watch, aided by their incredible collection of historical machines.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The creation of each watch is an initiatory journey through the history of watchmakers who used magnificent tools in their work, thus writing a whole new chapter in the history of mechanical watchmaking.

The watch

This new watch will be fitted with an entirely atypical inverted movement. The dial side features a constant force regulating organ system with its differential, a large balance wheel with an extraordinary shape, fitted with four arms, as well as the hours and minutes at the centre, while on the case back is a large power reserve indicator. Dominique Buser and Cyrano Devanthey will build the watch in its entirety, with the support of Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey, Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The project is still in its infancy. While the foundations have already been laid, there are still many details yet to be defined.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

That being said, it is already possible to imagine that this future watch will represent the incredible alchemy between tradition and modernity that is embodied by all the participants in this magnificent adventure.

URWERK – UR-111C Two-Tone Edition

URWERKUR-SPECIAL PROJECTS UR-111C Two-Tone Limited Edition - 2020

Independent Swiss watchmaker URWERK has always championed innovation. And its latest model, the UR-111C - now in a striking Two-Tone (TT) black PVD and brushed steel, teardrop profile case - is no exception. Certainly, as part of the “Special Projects” line - a deviation from the wandering hour indications for which URWERK has become well-known - it’s one of the most conceptually adventurous watches on the market.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The UR-111C TT comes with three key advances for watchmaking. The first is a retrograde linear minute display in an end-mounted driver’s watch style. This is a spinoff of the mechanism invented for the UR-CC1. With a twist.  Here the numerals are set in a 30° diagonal slant for a better readability. This means that the rotating cylinder onto which the minute indicator is painted must rotate 300 degrees about its axis, during which a coiled spring is wound.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At the 60th minute, the spring is released, making the indicator jump a further 60 degrees and back to the start position. But it also makes the hour indicator to its left jump too. The result is a pleasing optical illusion of the cylinder rotating endlessly and seamlessly.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The second innovation is the seconds display. Openwork Arabic numerals are set onto two wheels, each graduated in ten second increments. Each wheel is made using a cutting edge process of lithography, electroplating and moulding devised precisely for the creation of very light and specific structures. Indeed, each wheel, complete with its six numerals, weighs just 0.025g - and that’s just as well, given the delicate dance that the two will now take part in. Interlocking like the teeth on cogs, they show a smooth progression of passing seconds. But how is the wearer to see such small-scale elements? They move - at a distance of just one tenth of a millimetre - under what looks to be a kind of circular lens, but which is a cluster of optical fibres.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The third and, in many ways, most stimulating new concept that the UR-111C introduces is its fresh take on the crown, for winding and setting. Doing away with the conventional, side-mounted winder, URWERK’s new piece introduces a roller system, positioned right across the middle of the case top. Rolling will further charge the watch’s self-winding movement. When small lever to the right side of the case is released, the same roller can be used to set the time, with stop-seconds functionality.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Of course, arranging all these micro-mechanics to create the end form of the UR-111C watch has been no easy task. The transmission had to be reimagined to allow a horizontal movement to provide a vertical time read-out within the crystal glass-covered truncated cones to both sides of the linear display. Connecting a roller crown to the winding stem likewise took feats of engineering, minuscule in scale but no less striking in effect.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

But that precisely follows the design ethos of URWERK’s co-founders Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei. More than just telling the time in sophisticated fashion, the UR-111C TT embodies both a visual and, especially unusually in watchmaking, a tactile treat for its owner. They’re ones which will sustain interest and intrigue alike through lifelong wear.
