The innovative, high-performance elastomer bracelet on this 18 ct yellow gold version has an Oysterclasp and the Rolex Glidelock extension system for enhanced comfort on the wrist.

AN INVITATION TO TRAVEL

Rolex is presenting a new 18 ct yellow gold version of its Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller, fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet. The watch is the first in the Classic category to include this innovative bracelet made of high-performance elastomer. It also features a bright black, sunray-finish dial with hands and hour markers in 18 ct yellow gold. The light reflections on the case sides and lugs highlight the refined profile of the 42 mm Oyster case.

This new version is of course equipped with the fluted, rotatable bezel unique to the Sky-Dweller, which is used to set the watch in conjunction with the Ring Command system. It also has a Chromalight display: the hands and hour markers are coated or filled with a luminescent material that emits a long-lasting blue glow in dark conditions.

This new version of the Sky-Dweller is equipped with calibre 9001, at the forefront of watchmaking technology.

Like all Rolex watches, the Sky-Dweller carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.

A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE

An elegant watch for frequent travellers, the Sky-Dweller displays the time in two time zones simultaneously and has an annual calendar. The reference time, in 24-hour format, is shown via an off-centre disc, and the local time is read using conventional centre hands. The annual calendar, named Saros, automatically differentiates between 30- and 31-day months. It is operated by a patented mechanism and stands out for its innovative display: the months of the year are indicated in 12 apertures around the circumference of the dial, with the current month marked in red. The instantaneous date change is linked to the local time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Sky-Dweller includes the Ring Command system, an interface between the rotatable bezel, winding crown and movement that allows the wearer to select and set the timepiece’s functions one by one, easily, quickly and securely.

THE OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS

A paragon of robustness and reliability, the Oyster case of the Sky-Dweller is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The middle case is crafted from a solid piece of 18 ct yellow gold. The case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Twinlock winding crown, fitted with a double waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case. The crystal is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and is fitted with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimum protection for the watch’s movement.

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 9001

This new version of the Sky-Dweller is equipped with calibre 9001, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. With multiple patents filed, this mechanical, self-winding movement is one of the most complex calibres created by the brand. Its architecture, manufacturing and innovative features make it exceptionally precise and reliable.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Calibre 9001 has a blue Parachrom hairspring manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive paramagnetic alloy that makes it up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. The blue Parachrom hairspring is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is fitted on the Rolex-designed and -patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance.

Calibre 9001 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor and offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours.

OYSTERFLEX BRACELET

The new 18 ct yellow gold version of the Sky-Dweller is fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet, which singularly combines the robustness and reliability of a metal bracelet with the flexibility, comfort and aesthetics of an elastomer strap. Developed and patented by Rolex, this innovative bracelet is made up of flexible metal blades manufactured from a titanium and nickel alloy. The blades are overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer, a material that is particularly resistant to environmental effects and very durable. For enhanced comfort, the inside of the Oysterflex bracelet is equipped with longitudinal cushions.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Oysterflex bracelet on this new version of the Sky-Dweller is equipped with a folding Oysterclasp in 18 ct yellow gold, designed and patented by Rolex. In addition, it features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, also developed and patented by the brand. This particularly inventive mechanism comprises a rack located under the clasp cover and a toothed sliding link that locks into the chosen notch. The Rolex Glidelock on the Oysterflex bracelet has six notches of approximately 2.5 mm, allowing the length of the bracelet to be adjusted easily, and without tools, up to some 15 mm.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION

Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This exclusive designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria.

These certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer.

ROLEX TP52 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
THE MASTERY OF PERFECTION

Cascais, 19 July 2018 – The Rolex TP52 World Championship may be the most recent addition to the Rolex yachting portfolio, but it feels just as much a natural fit as any of the events that have featured during the brand’s six-decade-long association with the sport. Taking place this week, from 17 – 21 July, the event is the highlight of the annual 52 SUPER SERIES. The 2018 venue is Cascais, located on the Portuguese Atlantic coast and renowned for big wind, big wave conditions. The first three days of the competition have lived up to the reputation, placing the onus firmly on precision in boat preparation, along with timing and execution during racing. After five races, Quantum Racing from United States leads the nine-boat fleet with a seven-point cushion. Azzurra from Italy and the British-flagged Alegre are tied in second.

The classic summer breeze for Cascais is a strong north-westerly wind, around 15 – 20 knots. This wind can drive steep waves, particularly offshore and out of the lee of the land. The first two days of this regatta have delivered some exceptional sailing conditions and, even though the winds diminished on the third day, racing has been spectacular. The TP52, at 15.85 metres (52-feet), is adept in most situations. Fast upwind, punching through any sea; even faster downwind, reaching and surfing on top of the waves. The fleet gathered this year for the world championship features nine new boats and crews fully geared to securing the title. With the heavy presence of America’s Cup and Olympic medal winners in each crew, an unflinching pursuit of excellence is evident throughout the fleet. The pressure to succeed at this grand prix event is tangible.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The three-time Olympic medallist and 2016 Rolex World Sailor of the Year, Santiago Lange, is the tactician on the Italian entry, Azzurra. Lange has raced in the TP52 Class a number of times, but not since 2014. Re-joining at the beginning of this year, he has noticed a big step up in preparation, reliability, skill and commitment: “It has always been a very tight class, but it feels as though the levels have continued to increase. The boats are very sophisticated and the designs are very similar. The shore teams go to incredible lengths to prepare the boats and maintain them after each race. How well you do, depends upon how well you sail.”

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The teams taking part at the Rolex TP52 World Championship are all at the very top of their chosen discipline. The sailors are skilled, resourceful and knowledgeable. The shore crew confirm the sense that everyone’s approach is dedicated and committed. The management of boat, equipment and personnel is at the level associated with highest tiers of other sports that marry human and mechanical performance. Lessons are continual and victory requires awareness and the ability to keep learning, adapting and perfecting. Five-time Olympic medallist, twice Rolex World Sailor of the Year and Rolex Testimonee, Robert Scheidt is the tactician on the Brazilian entry, Onda. “There is no room for error in any department,” he says

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At the halfway stage, it is the professional team on Quantum Racing that is proving consistently strong. With two wins from five races, including today’s 20-nautical mile coastal race, the American crew - led by Terry Hutchinson and Dean Barker - has hardly put a foot wrong. Even today, when their boat’s instruments failed less than 30-minutes into the race, the team was able to demonstrate its talents keeping the boat going fast on instinct and feel.

With nine new boats on the start line, and all the crews performing at the peak of their powers, it is sometimes difficult to see exactly from where the differences in performance stem. Tom Burnham, strategist on Hasso and Tina Plattner’s Phoenix,is a former world champion crew member with Quantum Racing: “All nine boats are brand new, they are all quick and the design differences are small. It is all about who is sailing well and it is down to how well you execute all the little things.”

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Achieving success is multi-faceted, according to Burnham: “So many pieces have to be absolutely right. It’s like a pyramid. At the base is the boat preparation. This has to be perfect. When things break, you lose and there is just no excuse at this level for breakages. Then it is boat-handling, another area where the teams work hard to eliminate errors. Then you have boat speed – sail design, sail trim. Finally, it is tactics and strategy, the hardest of the lot to get right.”

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Mastering the first three layers of the pyramid requires skill and experience, determination and effort. There is very little between the competing boats in these areas. The final layer is perhaps the most elusive when it comes to consistency and accuracy. Each boat races with a navigator, strategist and tactician to spread the decision-making burden and to relieve pressure. And, while Lange insists that “without boat speed you have no chance”, it is equally evident that without good tactics boat speed will never be enough at this level. The quality of individuals filling the decision-making roles on all the competing boats is exceptional, confirming the importance of the tip to the pyramid.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The close competition continues with further racing planned for tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday. Conditions look set to increase the pressure on the crews, with the wind forecast to build, truly testing the best practitioners in the sport. For the overall victor, it will be worth it. As well as being crowned World Champion, the winner of the 2018 Rolex TP52 World Championship will receive a Rolex timepiece, the recognized symbol of achievement in yachting, awarded to the winners of many of sailing’s most prestigious events, including the Rolex Fastnet Race, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.

ROLEX – OYSTER Deepsea Perpetual D-BLUE Dial

ROLEXOYSTER Perpetual Deepsea D-BLUE Dial 2014

Rolex Celebrates Its Partnership with James Cameron’s Historic Dive by Launching a New Version of the Rolex Deepsea

Geneva/New York, 4 August 2014

On the occasion of therelease of National Geographic’s DEEPSEA CHALLENGE 3D film about the expedition to the deepest reaches of the ocean by explorer and film-maker James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar), Rolex has introduced a new version of its Rolex Deepsea. This ultimate divers’ watch, resistant to extreme pressure, isequipped with a “D-blue” dial representing the colours of the deep.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The deep blue to pitch-black gradient dial is reminiscent of the ocean’s twilight zone where the last trickle of light from the surface disappears intothe abyss, echoing James Cameron’s DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition. A sa tribute to the partnership between Rolex and Cameron, the “DEEPSEA”marking on the new dial adopts the colour of the explorer’s green submersible as it is perceived underwater.

The new Rolex Deepsea was introduced on Monday 4 August in New York, during the US premiere of the documentary film in the splendid Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History, in the presence of James Cameron and many other personalities from the worlds of underwater exploration and cinema.  DEEPSEA CHALLENGE 3D traces Cameron’s historic dive into the Mariana Trench with the support of Rolex and National Geographic.

Exploring the last frontier
On  26  March  2012,  film-maker  and  explorer  James  Cameron  made  a record-breaking solo dive 10,908 metres (35,787 feet) below the surface of the Pacific Ocean piloting the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible. He remained on the ocean floor for three hours to explore, take samples and capture the first-ever high-resolution images of this last frontier. Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO
Scientists estimate that 95 per cent of the oceans remain unexplored and hold hidden clues to life on Earth. The samples taken on the expedition have led to the identification of at least 68 new species. The documentary film follows the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE adventure from its very beginning to the last of its 13 Pacific dives.

The inspirational DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition paved the way for a new era in scientific exploration of the deep. No human being had returned to the deepest part of the

Mariana Trench since 23 January 1960, the date of the first manned dive to the bottom by the bathyscaphe Trieste. And whenever humanity ventures to new frontiers on Earth, so does Rolex.

Rolex and the deep

Rolex watches have a connection with both the Trieste and the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expeditions. During both historic dives, an experimental Rolex watch attached to the hull of the submersible was exposed to the most colossal water pressure on the planet, some 11 kilometres (7 miles) below the surface. Both watches emerged working perfectly, illustrating the supremacy of Rolex in mastering water-proofness. Rolex played a pioneering role in the conquest of the deep with the creation, in 1926, of the Oyster, the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, then of professional divers’ watches:  the Oyster Perpetual Submariner (1953), Sea-Dweller (1967) and Rolex Deepsea (2008).

The ultimate divers’ watch

The Rolex Deepsea, a new-generation divers’ watch, is waterproof to an extreme depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet). Its 44 mm Oyster case, reinforced with the patented Ringlock System, was designed to exceed the most exacting demands of professional divers. It defines new standards of robustness, precision, functionality and reliability.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

James Cameron was wearing a Rolex Deepsea during his expedition into the Mariana Trench. The model also served as the blueprint for the design of the experimental Rolex Deepsea Challenge, waterproof to a depth of 12,000 metres (39,370 feet) and tested in real-life conditions during Cameron’s dive, affixed to the robotic arm of his submersible.

Pushing the limits

With the new version of the Rolex Deepsea equipped with a gradient “D-blue” dial, Rolex is celebrating not only its partnership with James Cameron’s historic expedition, but also its commitment to exploration, innovation and the constant desire to push the limits of human endeavour.
An abundance of technology

A new-generation divers’ watch, the ROLEX DEEPSEA benefits from exclusive technical innovations like the RINGLOCK SYSTEM. This new case architecture patented by Rolex enables the watch to resist the colossal pressure exerted by water at the depth of 3,900 metres, equivalent to a weight of approximately three tonnes on the crystal.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The RINGLOCK SYSTEM is based on a combination of three elements:
  • a high-performance nitrogen-alloyed stainless steel ring, positioned inside the middle case of the watch between the crystal and the case back, which withstands the water pressure;
  • a slightly domed 5 mm thick synthetic sapphire crystal;
  • a case back made from grade 5 titanium held tight against the highperformance ring by a screw-down 904L steel ring.
Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

These three components are set in a middle case fashioned from a solid block of particularly corrosion-resistant 904L steel. The TRIPLOCK winding crown, equipped with three seals, screws down securely against the case, completing the waterproofness system and offering watertight security akin to a submarine’s hatch.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The case of the ROLEX DEEPSEA is also equipped with a helium escape valve. This allows the helium that penetrates the watch during deep water saturation dives to escape, without harming the timepiece when the gas expands during the decompression stages in a hyperbaric chamber. The case is the product of a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology.

Stringent waterproofness tests
In deep-sea diving, absolute reliability and security are of the essence. Each ROLEX DEEPSEA must therefore undergo Rolex’s stringent water proofness tests. To this end, a special hyperbaric test tank was developed in conjunction with COMEX (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertises, the world-renowned French company specializing in underwater engineering and hyperbaric technologies). Every single ROLEX DEEPSEA is tested to ensure its waterproofness to a depth of 3,900 metres with an additional safety margin of 25 per cent.

Bezel with Highly resistant CERACHROM insert
The unidirectional rotatable bezel of the ROLEX DEEPSEA is fitted with a 60-minute graduated black CERACHROM insert that allows divers to monitor their time underwater for their safety.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The insert, made of an extremely hard and corrosion-resistant ceramic, is virtually scratchproof and its colour is unaffected by ultraviolet rays. The numerals and the graduations are engraved in the ceramic and coated with platinum using a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) process patented by Rolex. The bezel’s knurled edge offers excellent grip when manipulating the bezel to set dive time.

Legible and functional

Great attention was paid to the legibility of this Professional diver’s watch. The CHROMALIGHT hour markers and hands are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting blue glow – lasting up to two times longer than traditional materials.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           FOTO

On the bezel, the zero marker ofthe graduation, in the form of a triangle, is visible in the dark thanks to a capsule containing the same luminescent material.

Security comfort and ergonomics

The ROLEX DEEPSEA’s OYSTER bracelet is equipped with an OYSTERLOCK safety clasp that prevents accidental opening, and with a double extension system that allows the watch to be worn comfortably over a diving suit up to 7 mm thick.

The FLIPLOCK extension link extendsthe bracelet by 26 mm, while the ROLEX GLIDELOCK system allows fine adjustments of the bracelet length in 2 mm increments for a total of approximately 20 mm. Neither of them requires the use of any tools.

Calibre 3135, a superlative chronometer

The ROLEX DEEPSEA is equipped with calibre 3135, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Like all Rolex PERPETUAL movements, the 3135 is a certified Swiss chronometer,a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute(COSC) tests. Its architecture, like that of all OYSTER watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The oscillator, the true heart of the watch, has a large balance wheel with variable inertia regulated extremely precisely with gold MICROSTELLA nuts. It is held firmly in place by a height-adjustable traversing bridge enabling very stable positioning to increase shock resistance. The oscillator features a blue PARACHROM hairspring patented and manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive alloy. Insensitive to magnetic fields, the PARACHROM hairspring offers great stability when exposed to temperature variations and remains up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. It is equipped with a Breguet overcoil, enhancing the isochronism of the oscillations.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

Calibre 3135 is fitted with a self-winding module featuring a PERPETUAL rotor, which ensures continuous winding of the mainspring by harnessing the movements of the wrist to provide a constant source of energy.

The ROLEX DEEPSEA’s movement will be seen only by certified Rolex watchmakers, yet it is beautifully finished and decorated in keeping with the brand’s uncompromising quality standards.

Its name pays tribute to the DEEPSEA SPECIAL, an experimental model that reached the record depth of 10,916 metres in the Pacific Ocean when the bathyscaphe Trieste descended into the Mariana Trench in 1960.
From the ROLEX DEEPSEA to the ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE

In 2012, the innovative case architecture of the Oyster PERPETUAL ROLEX DEEPSEA and its RINGLOCK SYSTEM directly inspired the design of the Oyster Perpetual ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE, an experimental divers’ watch guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 12,000 metres (39,370 feet). Entirely designed and manufactured by Rolex, it can resist the extreme pressure found in the deepest reaches of the oceans. On 26 March, it accompanied film-maker (Titanic, Avatar) and explorer James Cameron on his solo 10,898-metre dive to Challenger Deep, the ocean’s deepest point, located in the Mariana Trench. “The ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE,” attached to the manipulator arm of the submersible,“was the reliable companion throughout the dive,” said James Cameron after the historic event.
