Moritz Grossmann – Benu BACKPAGE Blue Platinum Edition

Moritz GrossmannBENU BACKPAGE Blue Skeleton Platinum Special Edition 2021

BACKPAGE Blue new splendour for a unique design

Celebrating its 13th anniversary on 11 November 2021, the Moritz Grossmann Manufacture has unveiled an exquisite version of the BACKPAGE.

The prestigious watch brand is marking the occasion with this magnificent model, which brings the exceptional design of the "mirror-inverted" calibre 107.0 to life in an ensemble of deep blue, polished steel and gold elements. The timepiece is available in a platinum case and comes in a limited edition of 13 pieces worldwide.

The BACKPAGE – a spectacular showcase of Grossmann’s watchmaking prowess – was presented by Moritz Grossmann in March 2018. A timepiece that raised a question not only shared by enthusiasts and admirers of mechanical watchmaking  –  which is more beautiful: the view of the front or the back.

The platinum statement piece, limited to 18 pieces, ushered in a completely new design in the world of haute horlogerie by making the signature mechanical highlights of the manufacture calibre  –  such as the Grossmann balance, the balance cock hand-engraved with floral motifs, and the 3-band snailing on the ratchet wheel  –  visible on the dial.

Legendary in connoisseur circles, these movement components enthral aficionados with an exceptionally large dial cut-out. The small seconds display also enjoys a prominent position thanks to the extravagant bearing for the second hand featuring a gold chaton.

The BACKPAGE Transparent launched last year, in which the precision-mechanical ensemble was accented by a sapphire crystal printed with indices and numerals, also delighted devotees of Glashütte fine watchmaking.

This year, Moritz Grossmann proudly presents a new variation of the BACKPAGE principle that dispenses entirely with numerals and indices and adds an expressive colour, the BACKPAGE Blue. Thanks to a wafer-thin layer of metal oxide, which is applied with nanometric precision of 1 millionth of a millimetre after finishing the components, all frame parts are resplendent in a deep blue hue.

The colour is durable and resistant to environmental influences, possessing a unique brilliance that creates a charming contrast to the gold-plated gear wheels, the gold chatons, the polished steel hands crafted in the manufactory, the carefully bevelled and polished screw heads and the ratchet wheel embellished with a 3-band snailing finish.

An innovative coating process is employed on the surfaces of all the frame parts, resulting in a fascinating interplay of light and colour that enhances the beauty of the mechanism, displayed and finished with consummate virtuosity, directly on the wrist.

The manufactory calibre 107.0: a new take on traditional Glashütte watchmaking artistry

The calibre 107.0 was designed by Moritz Grossmann to attain this expressive visual impression on the front of the dial. While at first glance it may seem to be a mirror image of the calibre 100.1, it is actually based on a new technical approach.

An additional wheel between the crown wheel and the ratchet wheel reverses the entire drive train with respect to the rotation of the mainspring barrel. The wheel train runs in the right direction thanks to the mirrored escapement and the mirrored oscillation system – also including the balance spring coiling direction.

The larger dimensions of the 2/3 plate necessitated design changes for the balance cock and the escape-wheel cock. The cantilevered geometry of the escape-wheel cock creates a balanced accent in the overall arrangement of the movement. The exceptionally luxurious high-artistic finish of the two components is fascinating with its masterly handcrafted engravings, chamfers and bevels.

The minute-wheel bridge: an innovative mechanism

To achieve the desired presence of the winding wheels on the dial side, the dial train was reconfigured. The artistically finished train wheels were arranged beneath a highly polished and bevelled minute-wheel bridge.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTOSince in this case, the hand-setting mechanism is located on the opposite side of the movement, the setting wheel extends all the way through the calibre. The new arrangement created space for the optimised barrel bearing and the ratchet wheel, which was also shifted to the front side.

The back of the movement: clear the stage for the winder with pusher and stop seconds

Even though the front mesmerises with a deft display of carefully selected components, the view of the back is equally captivating.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

One of the highlights here is the functional sequence of the winding mechanism, which is openly integrated into the wheel bridge. Almost all of its components are mirrored in order to guarantee their function even when mounted in the opposite position while ensuring the position of the lever remains unchanged.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The stop-seconds and stop-balance functions have also been redesigned. In the hand-setting mechanism, the brake position is sampled at the clutch lever and, via a push rod, transferred to the brake spring, which then stops the balance. After the pusher is activated and the movement starts, the brake spring returns the push rod to its rest position.

Platinum case

A platinum case provides a fitting accompaniment for the anniversary model, which is worn with a dark blue strap made of hand-stitched alligator leather.

The new model and the entire collection are now available in the new Moritz Grossmann Online Boutique.

What is it that connects people with time? Both are perpetually in motion. As the famous proverb says, ‘a rolling stone gathers no moss’, which reminds us of the benefits of an active lifestyle. This takes energy. Mechanical watches have been wound by hand for centuries – b y turning a crow n, a crank, a key or b y hoisting weights on a chain. How can we fulfil the dream of a mechanism that makes consciously winding the watch superfluous? The answer is given by man himself. The movement of the watch wearer supplies the self-winding watch with the energy it needs.

Grossmann’s aesthetics – interpreting the traditional automatic hammer makes the most beautiful mechanics come alive

The HAMATIC Vintage draws its kinetic energy from the arm movement of the watch wearer. The movement of the arm continuously deflects a pendulum in the shape of a hammer with a heavy gold hammer head. This kinetic energy is transferred via the ratchet wheel to the mainspring in the barrel and winds the watch.

Inspired by the vintage idea, the Moritz Grossmann designers adopted the traditional concept of an automatic hammer winding system from the 19th century and refined it according to the principles of Grossmann’s supreme craftsmanship, resulting in a new movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The elaborate design of the hammer mechanism, known as the HAMATIC for short, provides a stage for the strikingly crafted gold hammer head and reveals the fascinating mechanics and exceptional finish of Grossmann’s 106.0 movement. The oval hammer body is open in the middle, offering a clear view of the beauty of the highly sophisticated mechanism.

Vintage style dial with shiny black-or surface

The new version of the HAMATIC in 750/000 white gold comes with a vintage style dial and is limited to 25 models worldwide. The dial has been given a new and exclusive finish. The surface was first painted in a black-anthracite colour. The mirror-polished background on a German silver base was then treated with a finish called ‘black or’, which created a shiny black surface.

Large Roman numerals in white form an attractive contrast to the black dial of the HAMATIC Vintage. The vintage ‘M. Grossmann’ logo from 1875 and handcrafted polished – hand s m easuring a m ere 0.1 mm wide are an homage to the old pocket watches of Moritz Grossmann.

Calibre 106.0 Bidirectional automatic hammer winding mechanism transfers even the slightest arm movements to wind the mainspring

The calibre 106.0 was especially designed for the HAMATIC. This classic pillar movement has a 2/3 plate and six Glashütte stripes.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The hammer winding mechanism works in two directions and winds the watch, regardless of the direction in which the watch wearer moves his arm. The winding mechanism via two click wheels is also highly energy efficient. The alternating, even winding over both wheels ensures that the mechanism is highly reliable. A power reserve of 72 hours is available when the movement is fully wound, which means that the HAMATIC continues to run for three days without any further movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
Another advantage of the hammer-style pendulum system is that the hammer’s centre of mass is further away from its rotational axis in the HAMATIC. This results in a high torque, which means a powerful force acting on the spring.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Hammer movements from just five degrees, which correspond to an oscillation of 2 mm, are used to wind the mainspring. The constant winding when the watch is worn also ensures that the spring is evenly tensioned, thus ensuring a high degree of precision.

Compensating for quick and slow movements by means of stop springs

The newly designed movement offers a further advantage. People do not always move in the same way. Movements are fast and slow. The former generate excessive deflections of the hammer body, which need to be attenuated and limited by fixed end stops.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This shock absorption is ensured by intricately crafted end springs in the hammer frame. More gentle movements, on the other hand, result in a lower hammer amplitude. Friction losses are virtually non-existent and energy transmission is nearly loss-free.

Reduction gear with yoke winder manual or automatic winding of the movement possible

In order to achieve a continuous rotary motion of the wheels for winding, the oscillations of the hammer body are picked up by two click levers and transferred to two click wheels. The two-way direction of rotation of the click wheels ensures an even rotary motion. This transfers the energy to the ratchet wheel in the mainspring barrel via the free wheel.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The watch can be wound by hand in addition to the self-winding mechanism. To achieve this, a manual winder designed as a yoke winder is mounted on a separate bridge. The yoke ensures that the manual winder is always uncoupled from the ratchet wheel when the HAMATIC system is active in response to motion. In manual winding mode, the reduction gear is isolated from the ratchet wheel by the click-pawl idler.

The HAMATIC also offers a stop-second function via the balance for ultra-precise time setting.

Moritz Grossmann – RESERVÉ DE MARCHE CLASSIQUE - Only Watch 2019

Moritz GrossmannBENU Special Edition RESERVÉ DE MARCHE CLASSIQUE White Gold - Only Watch 2019

A piece of contemporary history for a good cause

Moritz Grossmann takes part in the Only Watch charity auction 2019 with the RÉSERVE DE MARCHE CLASSIQUE

⦁    A one-off piece with power-reserve indicator created exclusively for the Only Watch auction
⦁    High-quality design based on a historic model by Glashütte watch pioneer Moritz Grossmann
⦁    Back signed by manufactory founder Christine Hutter

The independent Glashütte manufactory Moritz Grossmann will be taking part in the eighth Only Watch charity auction on 9 November 2019 in Geneva with a superb unique timepiece based on a historical model.

Under the patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, Only Watch auctions exclusive unique watches from prestigious manufacturers every two years in aid of the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies. The proceeds will be used to treat children suffering from muscular dystrophy and to advance research into the hereditary neuromuscular disease, which is currently considered incurable.

This marks the second time that Moritz Grossmann is supporting the association and the manufactory has once again created a unique piece of schönstes deutsches Handwerk: the RÉSERVE DE MARCHE CLASSIQUE is reminiscent of a historical pocket watch by the Glashütte watch pioneer Moritz Grossmann. The manufactory has translated his masterful design from the Wilhelminian era into a contemporary piece: the result is an ultra-fine unique watch that combines a classically elegant design language with a power-reserve indicator function made to the highest standards of craftsmanship.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The slender casing in 750/000 white gold and a coordinating rhodié dial with fine three band snailing give the RÉSERVE DE MARCHE CLASSIQUE a bold aesthetic. In addition, the black Roman numerals and the Moritz Grossmann logo in typography dating from 1875 provide an effective historical counterpoint. The pear-shaped, very fine characteristic hands are based on the model of the Grossmann pocket watch and have been annealed in blue by hand. An exquisitely crafted strap made from brown alligator leather completes the overall composition in the form of a warm colour accent.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The power reserve is proof of absolute technical perfection: it is designed as a two-colour bar-shaped indicator element and is controlled by a differential gear. Due to the special bearing below the ratchet wheel, it runs without impairing the movement, winding mechanism or hour wheel. In keeping with the exquisite design of the dial, the display bar is slightly narrower and placed directly under the historical logo lettering. When the movement is fully wound, a completely white bar is displayed and when the power reserve decreases, an increasingly blue bar is displayed.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The highly refined movement has the characteristic features of the 100.2 calibre: Grossmann manual winding with pusher, cantilevered balance cock with Grossmann poising screw, separate removable winding block and mass-optimised Grossmann balance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The sapphire crystal back on the rear of the watch reveals the fascinating interplay of the fine mechanical elements. As a sign of appreciation, Moritz Grossmann founder and managing director Christine Hutter has personally signed the RÉSERVE DE MARCHE CLASSIQUE. Her signature is embedded in the glass bottom in the form of a gold thread.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Participating in Only Watch is a matter close to our hearts at Moritz Grossmann’, emphasises Christine Hutter. ‘This is exactly what I wanted to express with my signature on the collector’s item. Our manufactory would like to contribute to helping children suffering from Duchenne. We have created a piece of schönstes deutsches Handwerk with a great deal of passion and hope to inspire all watch lovers with this piece’.

Collectors can view the finesse of the RÉSERVE DE MARCHE CLASSIQUE for themselves before the auction: from 25 September to 9 November 2019, Grossmann’s unique piece will be presented in international metropolises as part of the Only Watch World Tour. The Monaco Yacht Show from 25 to 28 September will host the grand opening event. The tour will then move on to Dubai, Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei and Geneva.

The auction will take place on 9 November 2019 at the Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues through Christie’s auction house.
