LINDE WERDELIN – OKTOPUS Reef

LINDE WERDELINOKTOPUS Reef Double Date Engraved Rose Gold & Titanium - Unique Piece NEW

In a special project, Linde Werdelin have collaborated with artist Johnny Dowell (Instagram: KingNerd; Twitter: JohnnyKingNerd) to create a new piece. Johnny Dowell, an established and talented engraver, approached Morten Linde and Jorn Werdelin to propose he do something with a Linde Werdelin watch.

The result: we sent him an Oktopus Double Date Rose Gold; he sent back the Oktopus Reef.

By trade, Dowell is a gun engraver, following in the footsteps of an uncle, a gun maker. He learned his engraving craft 14 years ago, a five-year learning period.

Since then he has been plying his trade at one of Britain’s most prestigious gun engravers, later beginning to work on jewellery and, most recently, watches.

In Johnny’s own words:
"I must admit doing this Oktopus Reefproject has been the most fun just because I had a lot more space to manoeuvre with regards to design and drawings. Morten and Jorn were quite happy for me to put my own style into it. I had a lot more freedom compared with other projects I’ve worked on. It was quite satisfying to transfer the drawings I’d put in the original templates onto the watch", said Johnny Dowell.

[Johnny “KingNerd” Dowell examining the Oktopus Reef.]

"I played around with ideas for a few months – drawings, layout, and case parts. There was a lot of back and forth between myself and Morten in that time. Being an Oktopus, a dive watch, we always thought the design would have something to do with the sea. We played with ideas for a while until Morten said ‘let’s do corals and bubbles to create an underwater diving effect."

[Oktopus Reef bezel with engraved octopus tentacles.]

"The bezel was not originally involved. Morten sent another template through with the concept of the octopus and I brought it to life with my own sketches. I wanted to create movement in the engraving, having the tentacles turning and twirling, showing the suckers underneath."

"The engraving process took up to 100 hours, from planning the layout onto the watch to engraving and finally creating the black effect."

"The most challenging part was working with Grade 2 Titanium. I had to order a piece to practice on, to feel how hard it was. It’s probably the hardest material I’ve cut. On the other hand, the sides of the watch are all flat rather than curved, which makes it lovely to work with. Its facets providing the best canvases. It works better visually, you can see more of the detail that way", said Johnny Dowell.

"The details are created with a very fine cut done under a microscope or magnifying loop – this takes the longest time. It takes a lot of focus and patience. It’s a painstakingly long process."

"The Oktopus Reef is a one-off piece. There may be future engraved versions of our current collection, but using different bases or with a different design due to the hand-engraved nature of the work. As such, there is only one piece available to buy on our website, on a first-come basis."

LINDE WERDELIN - SpidoSpeed Black Diamond Chronograph

LINDE WERDELIN - SpidoSpeed   Black    Diamond Limited Edition Chronograph

The Spido family is produced with superb precision engineering. With ideas drawn from constructing racing car chassis, the case body is drilled out to maintain the bare essentials for weight reduction, yet offering a robust and stylish structure.

Linde Werdelin's signature skeletonised case is among the most technical and challenging to produce for a timepiece. The Spido family is a testament to Linde Werdelin's design innovation, build excellence, and meticulous craftsmanship.

A unique composition of black diamonds, mother of pearl, DLC (diamond-like-carbon) with blued-steel hands. Among the LINDE WERDELIN collection, SpidoSpeed Black Diamond is the first to bear a dial made from a precious natural material, precisely from the inside of oyster shells of original Tahitian mother of pearls. Every piece radiates a slightly different gradient of blue, making each one of them inimitable from another.

The SpidoSpeed is a chronograph timepiece constructed of a complex fully skeletonised case with weight reduction technology while preserving strength in the structure. It has been crafted and designed with inspirations originating from the racing car industry.

The dial is constructed into two parts to give a major sense of depth, very much achieved with the use of different colours and surface combinations given by the light effect of the mother of pearl dial. Each 48 brilliant-cut black diamond of 1.57 carats is meticulously mounted inside the bezel with exceptional accuracy. The brilliant cut is one of the most favourable forms for enhancing the play of lights and shades.

LINDE WERDELIN - Oktopus II - Double Date Titanium BLUE

LINDE WERDELIN - Oktopus II - Double Date Titanium BLUE NEW

The idea

The Oktopus II represents a technical and ideological advancement of the original Oktopus. The brand new and innovative case construction of the Oktopus II benefits from our extensive in-house knowledge in crafting highly sophisticated dive instruments, which sets us apart from any other watch company.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

The combination of the Oktopus II and the Reef reflects our philosophy that "time should be read analogue while performance should be measured digital".

The case

The Oktopus II Double Date features a central movement chamber within the case and four case parts assembled together with 16 screws. Eight screws seal the fixed bezel with the chamber and another eight inside the back-case.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

The housing containing the movement is constructed for maximum resistance against water. The four case parts at three, six, nine and twelve o’clock, are built separately from the movement chamber and are used to hold the strap as well as to carry the attachable instrument.

The construction was inspired by an air-tight pressure chamber used in our lab for diving simulations and testing for both the Oktopus II and the Reef. All the screws comprise of laminated tension discs to tighten and reinforce the construction. The whole surface of the case undergoes a microbillé and a satin finish to reflect light or shadow. The robust crown at 3 o’clock bears an engraving of an octopus symbol.

The back case has been decorated with an octopus drawing by Morten Linde, as a reference to an earlier series - the Oktopus Tattoo. The Oktopus II intentionally does not have a turning bezel as the information (time spent submersed) traditionally measured by a turning bezel is available in the Reef.

We chose to use titanium, gold and ceramic, as these precious materials are some of the least reactive available and highly anti-corrosive against sea water.

The dial

The dial of the Oktopus II is built in two layers. The upper level is cut out in a stencil technique, inspired from the graffiti art. Bearing the Linde Werdelin logo and indexes 3,6 and 9 in superluminova, together with the big calendar wheels, the dial displays an octopus icon.

The lower dial is made with a circular Cote de Genève dial to give the effect of water ripples. Two laser-cut wheels at 11 and 1 o’clock are powered by the big calendar complication.

The movement

An upscale 3-hand big date movement, calibre 14580, is custom-made together with Dubois Depraz, an independent and highly regarded Swiss movement maker specialised in calendar wheels.
Oktopus IIDouble Date currently comes in 3 versions, Titanium Blue, Titanium Yellow, and Rose Gold, each available in 88 pieces worldwide starting autumn 2012.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Individually crafted in titanium with a satin finish and a black ceramic bezel to offer superb scratch resistance, the Oktopus II Titanium Blue features a big date in double wheels, powered by a highly finished Dubois Depraz custom-made automatic movement for enhanced readability.

The 2-layered dial is laser-cut into a octopus representation in stencil technique at the layer on top with circular Côtes de Genève finish to resemble water ripples at the layer below. The case back is finely engraved with an octopus drawing created by Morten Linde. The crown carries an engraved octopus symbol.
