The name John Howe is not the most well-known, but most are familiar with his universe and designs: John Howe is the artistic designer for Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies. A fantasy prodigy who has lived in Neuchâtel for 30 years, and who is once again in the spotlight with "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power", which will be released on September 2nd.

Jaquet Droz and John Howe have much in common - the ability to create extraordinary worlds, to give life to wonderful things and emotions, to create animations that speak to the heart and soul - and this is what has brought them together. The ability to astonish, to amaze, to move.

Together, Jaquet Droz and John Howe worked as they have always done - with paper, pencil, and lots of ideas. The theme of their watchmaking collaboration soon became clear: the Dragon. It traverses John Howe's universe as it does millennia, cultures and continents.

Jaquet Droz wanted this Dragon to be alive. And beyond that, with a total of 9 animations, it is probably one of the most complex modern automaton watches ever designed. The sequence that animates it is random, in order to preserve all its magic and mystery. The sacred animal's spine undulates like its tail; its eye and jaw open and close; its tongue moves; its crest rises and falls; its claws grasp a continuously rotating stone.

In accordance with the new Jaquet Droz Vision 8.0, the manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds now only produce unique orders for clients who are themselves unique.

The 43 mm case is finished in the gold of your choice, and Jaquet Droz is already working on the opportunity of using other materials, such as sapphire. The case can either be engraved or left blank.

The Dragon, also made of gold and entirely engraved by hand, can have its scales more or less accentuated. It would be futile to list all the possibilities, as they are nearly limitless.

In addition, Jaquet Droz is currently finalizing a brand new phygital solution, installed right in the heart of its head quarter. Open and connected, it will allow clients to see their own Dragon Automatons being created.

Precious and dreamlike: the new Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara Hummingbird shines with individuality and delicacy, drawing collectors in to appreciate the technical mastery of its gold partitions. With this creation, Jaquet Droz has established itself as one of the rare artisanal ateliers to use the ancestral technique of plique-à-jour enameling which first appeared 1500 years ago and can be compared to a miniature stained-glass window.

Different to the art of cloisonné or champlevé, it consists of applying the enamel to bottomless molds. A gold dial with partitions of different shapes and sizes is created. Each empty space is filled with different colors of enamel before undergoing several successive firings. Each passage in the oven gives the enamel its color and density, yet with the constant risk that only a few degrees hotter will break it. Just like a miniature stained-glass window, this plique-à-jour process results in a perfectly transparent enamel which plays with light, shadows and reflections, and which gives the motif featured as much volume as it does life.

Today, this motif is a hummingbird crafted in a subtle gradient of green. Jaquet Droz created no less than seven different shades to express its summery and joyful vision of this famous bird. By choosing the Petite Heure Minute as its canvas and with an off-centered dial at two o’clock, the House offers the hummingbird a large space where it can express the richness of its tones and the virtuosity of the plique-à-jour (smalta clara in Latin).

Part of a numerus clausus limited edition of only eight pieces, this is a rare and refined piece set with 100 diamonds on the bezel and pallet lugs, featuring a mother-of-pearl dial, and a case measuring 35 mm which sits on a hand-embroidered green satin strap.

The Dragon is far more than just a mythical creature. It is something that has never existed, yet it has always been there. From the Big Bang to the end of time, it embodies perpetual renewal, both evil and redemption.

One man has become a leading specialist in them. John Howe is a legend of fantasy art, as well as the illustrator and conceptual artist of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. He has shaped the Dragon in our collective imagination and placed the mythical creature in the context of its millennial history, revealing its past richness as well as its various contemporary dimensions.

Jaquet Droz and John Howe revealed the first signs of this unique partnership in late 2020. On the one hand, an age-old Fine Watchmaking brand, which has become a master in artisanal techniques, with creations that have spanned the centuries while also embracing each of their changes. On the other, a versatile artist whose designs capture the essence of his time, conveying the myths and beliefs that have been nestled deep within people’s minds for thousands of years.

The Petite Heure Minute “Dragon” is the fruit of this union. Jaquet Droz gave John Howe the wide-open dial of its model with off-centered hours for the artist to leave his own style, mark and inspiration. On a dark blue Grand Feu enamel backdrop, the Dragon comes to life as its body nestles into the hollow of the 41 mm case, which is available in red gold or white gold.

Born in Canada, 62-year-old John Howe has lived in Neuchâtel for 30 years. His creation reveals a very simple Dragon that returns to the essence of his early designs. It has required the full range of Jaquet Droz decorative techniques to reproduce each relief, contour and volume – a true work of art with unique dimensions and a monochrome pictorial masterpiece, which emerges from a dial with shared dominant tones thanks to the finesse of its features.

The red-tongued Dragon holds a luminous pearl in its claws known as the Dragon Pearl. It is traditionally associated with happiness, abundance, wisdom and knowledge for its owner. In Chinese imperial symbolism, it represented the Emperor’s wisdom and the perfection of his mind. This is both the sacred essence of the Dragon as well as its power.

Today, it enhances these two very limited series of 18 pieces, which are powered by a self-winding movement. The precise attention to detail, in keeping with the Art of Astonishment so cherished by Jaquet Droz, extends to the gold oscillating weight, which has been meticulously hand-engraved to depict the dragon’s tail with its countless scales.

There is no shortage of emotion and thrill with the new SW Steel-Ceramic. One color stands out before you even get to the details: red. This is the first time it has played such a prominent role on an SW, or a Jaquet Droz creation for that matter. The hand-edged fabric strap ties in with the Grande Seconde's stroke at 6 o'clock, the tip of the hour and minute hands, and the quarter hour marks they sweep over – all coated with Super-LumiNova. Where they intersect, the red 5, 6 and 7 are written in Arabic numerals while the other numbers appear in Roman. Under this numerical trio, at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock, there are two crossbars firmly locking the iconic figure 8 formed by the hour-minute and Grande Seconde dials on the impressive 45 mm case.

Sized for everyday use, the steel case is covered with a black ceramic bezel that is inalterable and scratch-proof. The crown is screwed down at 3 o'clock making it water-resistant to 50 meters (5 bar). It's also protected by a rubber cast for optimal handling. On either side, two large claws safeguard it from shocks. On the other side of the crossbridge, there is a symmetrical piece to make it achieve seamless balance and give the case maximum protection

Like with every Jaquet Droz creation, this one showcases the painstaking work that goes into every finish. The lugs were hollowed to increase mass and create a sportier feel. They are polished to provide a mirror image of the SW collection’s signature fluted bezel. The claws at 3 and 9 o’clock were given a circular satin finish with grooves that follow the bezel’s curve. The 18-karat white gold appliqués affixed at the middle of the black lacquered dial have a satin finish with vertical lines. And the hands are hollowed to make it easier to read the hours and minutes.

 As for the case-back, Jaquet Droz stayed true to its Fine Watchmaking finishes. Topped with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the SW Steel-Ceramic reveals the inner workings of the JD2663A-S self-winding mechanical movement with ruthenium treatment, the 18-karat white gold double barrel and oscillating weight, giving it a power reserve of almost three days (68 hours). The surfaces are polished or satin-finished and even adorned with Côtes de Genève alongside each watch’s own series number, a mark that Jaquet Droz makes these one-of-a-kind creations for collectors of uncommonly remarkable timepieces.

The traditional model features a case made of red gold, a gold alloy that Jaquet Droz admires for its subtle accents of warm coppery tones. Worn on a leather strap with a novel rubber-like finish, it supplements the watchmaker’s semi-mat alligator straps.

It perfectly matches the gray of the bridges suspending the Grande Seconde's delicate movement. Inside the 41 mm case lies the airy workings of this exclusive Jaquet Droz caliber where every component is meticulously stripped down to its minimum point of resistance. The fully suspended gear train is attached to the movement’s skeletonized bridges raised by an openworked oscillating weight that lets light shine clearly through.

The modern version, on the other hand, is the first time Jaquet Droz has used plasma ceramic on one of its timepieces. This plasma ceramic is made by transforming white ceramic with gas heated to 20,000°C, giving it a unique metallic glow without adding any metal fragments to the process.

This core modification maintains all the inherent properties of ceramic. It is just as hard, lightweight and scratch-resistant as high-tech ceramic, a material that has widely stood the test of time.
