HUBLOT – MP-13 Tourbillon Bi-Axis Retrograde Edition

HUBLOT MASTERPIECE MP-13 Tourbillon Bi-Axis Retrograde Titanium Edition 2023

Hublot writes a new chapter in the MP story—a collection of masterpieces that embody disruptive, creative and technical Haute Horlogerie, aimed at collectors eager to discover the watchmaking of tomorrow.

While some may avoid the number 13 due to superstition, there is certainly no avoiding the MP-13! Defying conventions and undeterred by superstition, Hublot reveals the character of its latest model.

The 44 mm MP-13 is encased entirely in brushed titanium and for the first time brings together two complications—the tourbillon and the retrograde display—in one, unique watch. But take note, as these are not just any old complications.

To begin, the tourbillon features two axes—a considerable feat, as Hublot is one of only a few watchmakers capable of manufacturing a double-axis tourbillon entirely in-house, having first done so with the MP-09 in 2017. The tourbillon completes a full rotation every minute on one axis, and every 30 seconds on the other. Having two speeds within the same mechanism creates a view that is both hypnotic and technical.

To further enhance its magic, Hublot has crafted a tourbillon with two refined attributes: it is skeletonized and suspended. This architectural design grants the tourbillon a weightlessness that more traditional versions lack.

It does away with the upper bridge and each component is pared back unsparingly to allow light to pass through unobstructed. To amplify the visual effect, the space surrounding the 6 o’clock tourbillon has been opened up and is protected on both sides by anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

Fourteen years after inaugurating our Manufacture’s first building, we are now unveiling the 13th MP movement produced entirely in-house by Hublot. Creativity is nothing without the tools of the trade, and vice versa. That is what makes our integrated business model so strong. At Hublot, every idea can almost instantly be developed into a project of horological innovation and give rise to extraordinary creations. Our collectors eagerly await the release of each new model, all of which embody cutting-edge watchmaking, as is the case with the new MP-13.”

RICARDO GUADALUPE
HUBLOT CEO

As always, Hublot remains firmly dedicated to ensuring the daily use of each client’s MP-13, guaranteeing a power reserve of at least four days or 96 hours.

It is likely to have the largest power reserve of any double-axis skeleton tourbillon on the market at present.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

And yet, guaranteeing these four days of power proved to be much more challenging for this model than for the handful of similar tourbillons.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This is because—in yet another first—the movement it powers is similarly not just retrograde, but bi-retrograde. These three variables (double-axis, bi-retrograde, four days of power) are typically never seen together as retrograde displays are energy-intensive.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

And a bi-retrograde variant, by definition, even more so. Another feature of this unique timepiece is that while the minute hand moves steadily, the hour hand skips instantly from one hour to the next, optimising the daily experience for the wearer by making the dial easier to read. The MP-13 offers 96 hours of power, with the power reserve indicator located at 11 o’clock.

This is also the first time Hublot has designed a bi-retrograde movement for both hours and minutes. It makes telling the time highly intuitive, natural and spontaneous. The display is read from left to right, mirroring many writing styles and the trajectory of the sun. The movement is also very easy to set, as the crown at 3 o’clock only has one position.

Winding through the minutes automatically moves the hours forward. Hublot designed the movement to only be wound in one direction, in yet another effort to ensure optimal ease of use.

This prevents breakages caused by winding the hands backwards — a weakness inherent to all retrograde displays, from which Hublot wished to spare its collectors.

Like all models in the MP series, the MP-13 Tourbillon Bi-Axis will only be produced as a very limited edition, with only 50 numbered pieces.

As the seconds counter reaches 3 o’clock, the silver and orange hands — symbolising strength and endurance—echo the hues of the trophy, and are set against the black background of the 42 mm dial and case. Driven by the HUB1153 self-winding chronograph movement, the piece is mounted on an unalterable, lined rubber strap.

This partnership with UEFA—which was initially established in 2015 for the two prestigious UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League tournaments—was extended to all its international and club competitions for both men’s and women’s football in 2019. Since then, in the hands of the 4th referee, the eyes of the spectators follow the announcements of added time and player substitutions on the Hublot 4th official board.

HUBLOT – BIG BANG Tourbillon Samuel Ross Titanium Edition

HUBLOTBIG BANG Tourbillon Samuel Ross Titanium 44mm Skeleton Automatic Edition 2022

A Hublot ambassador since 2020, creative director Samuel Ross brings his unique graphic language to watchmaking for the first time with the limited-edition Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross.

A 40-year focus on the “Art of Fusion” has resulted in a meteoric rise for Hublot, seeing it catapulted to the pinnacle of innovative watchmaking. With the brand’s ability to combine seemingly diametrically opposed materials, plus an enduring drive to push the boundaries of what is technically and aesthetically possible, it has rewritten the rules of horology, leaving a new design language in its wake.

Fostering a desire to work with the most talented practitioners in alternate fields, the brand introduced its “Hublot Loves Art” initiative more than a decade ago. Hublot has since collaborated with some of the most talented artists and designers of a generation. Ground-breaking in outlook and highly collectable, the resulting watches offer new interpretations of time and timekeeping. The most recent creator to take up the mantle is Samuel Ross.

Mirroring Hublot’s trajectory, renaissance man Ross has experienced an equally breakneck rise to prominence. Describing himself as a creative director, the 30-year-old multi-disciplinary artist, filmmaker, and fashion designer graduated from Leicester De Montfort University in 2012 with a first-class honours’ degree in graphic design and illustration. Since then, he has collaborated with many brands and creative outlets – from Oakley and Nike to Dr. Martens and Mackintosh – launching his men’s Luxury Sportswear label A-Cold-Wall* in late 2015, and his design studio SR_A in 2019.

In 2019, Ross was awarded the prestigious Hublot Design Prize, and a year later he was announced as an official brand ambassador, an occasion marked by the unveiling of REFORM, a sculpture designed to encapsulate 40 years of Hublot. Combining an ancient, organic material (granite) with a modern, manmade one (steel), Ross created his own ‘Fusion’, uniting past and present in a production process that involved both traditional hand-finishing and cutting-edge machining.

The deceptively simple, industrial form of the 40cm high artwork has now been reinterpreted in the 44mm Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel RossRoss’s first wristwatch collaboration with Hublot. Ross’s signature use of colour and love of stark geometry and urban design, come together with the innovation and precision that prevail in the work of both Ross and Hublot.

The distinctive, stylised hexagon of the Big Bang case is reflected in the titanium honeycomb mesh used on the sapphire dial, case, case back and strap.

A basic building block of nature (seen in environments from beehives and snake’s scales to pineapple skin and snowflakes) the robust and efficient shape, that can be repeated without gaps or overlapping, has been appropriated as a standard for modern-day construction and design thanks to the seamless fit of each unit.

Here the hexagon is a visual symbol of the functionality of the watch – a key strand running through all of Ross’s design. Although it may be a wearable sculpture, Ross never loses sight of the need for it to be durable and ergonomic, the lightweight, openworked titanium structure and malleable rubber strap ensuring its comfort on the wrist.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A proponent of colour theory, Ross has chosen orange – representing energy and optimism – for the strap and accents on the crown and tourbillon bridge and lateral bumpers that protect the case, a glowing contrast to the sober grey of the satin-finished case and bezel.

The 282-component, manufacture HUB6035 calibre within beats at 3 Hz and gives 72 hours of power reserve. Just 50 pieces will be produced, each one a piece of art that brings a new perspective and a new visual language to watchmaking.

To celebrate the launch, Ross’s signature colours will envelop Hublot’s 5th Ave boutique in New York City. The takeover will be repeated in Hublot stores across the globe, bringing the Samuel Ross universe to the world of horology.

" The youngest artist we have ever worked, Samuel Ross’s 360-degree approach is unique and intelligent, incorporating the watch, packaging, communication, and visual identity. What is so special about this collaboration is the direct interaction between design and object, ideas, and form. Samuel has pushed our team to work with new and innovative materials and shapes. It’s a really dynamic and fulfilling partnership.”   RICARDO GUADALUPE HUBLOT CEO

" Hublot personifies velocity, precision, and exploration. Pairing the unparalleled craft and expertise of Swiss watchmaking alongside a spirit of sharp, innovative thinking and design solutions, crystallised the cadence between Ricardo & I.  Our goal is to create a universe that leverages the strengths of contemporary engineering, spatial design and digital. This is reflected in the focus on fine details, with striking, bold & unapologetic results.  We see the future of luxury as a lateral experience, offering a multigenerational access point that enables luxury to engage global audiences."  SAMUEL ROSS CREATIVE DIRECTOR
