 A breath of eternity
A new limited-edition Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar in rose opaline and dark blue

Glashütte Original’s perpetual calendar lifts timekeeping into the realm of art. In its latest version this mechanical masterpiece is already a rarity: the new Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar with a rose opaline dial and a dark blue leather strap will be issued in a limited edition of only 100 pieces.

The mechanisms in motion within the virtuoso composition are no less compelling than the watch’s external beauty. A hand-crafted and finely finished automatic movement from the ateliers of the renowned Saxon manufactory honours every day of the year – from now to eternity (almost).

Harmonious colours: rose opaline meets dark blue

The latest timepiece from German watchmaker Glashütte Original adds a modern and sophisticated couple to the classic business partners black/white and grey/brown: rose/dark blue! The galvanic rose opaline dial is crafted and decorated in an elaborate process with numerous individual steps.

Its silken hue contrasts splendidly with the hand-mounted blue hour appliques, which in this case consist exclusively of Roman numerals.

The deep blue hue is taken up by the finely stepped calendar windows and moon phase display, and by the elegant poire hands and Louisiana alligator leather strap.

The Perpetual Calendar: precision without compromise

The perpetual calendar grand complication has it all. Day of the week? It goes without saying. Panorama Date? A Glashütte Original specialty. Month and leap year? Absolutely! All calendar indications are precisely tailored to suit the various lengths of the months, lending the watch a new look day after day.

Thanks to its astonishing mechanical memory, Glashütte Original‘s Perpetual Calendar won’t need to be reset (in theory, at least) until the year 2100 – which in timekeeping, as in life, amounts to nothing less than a minor eternity.

Made in Glashütte: a watch with character

As a true child of its Glashütte home, the Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar combines filigree decoration, sophisticated mechanics and robust workmanship. The transparent sapphire crystal case back offers a clear view of the highly refined finishing of the automatic movement, its skeletonized rotor and skeletonized Double-G, which renders the rotor even more delicate.

Watch connoisseurs will discover additional typical Glashütte decorations and construction features: the characteristic three-quarter plate with refined Glashütte stripe finish, the hand-engraved balance cock, delicate perlage finishing, blued screws and fine decorative finishes on the wheels and rotor track.

A first class movement: the manufactory calibre 36-12

The priority governing development of this movement was to maximise user friendliness and ease of maintenance. A silicon balance spring guarantees exceptional precision, while a single spring barrel offers a power reserve of more than 100 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Robust stability is assured thanks to an innovative bayonet mounting, which secures the movement in the case. In addition, a conscious effort was made to make it easy to use the watch: the practical universal corrector allows the wearer to set the day, date and month at the same time – which may seldom prove necessary, since the exceptional power reserve maintains the correct interplay of the displays for a long time, even after the watch is set down.

A noble family: Excellence à la Glashütte Original

All models in the Senator Excellence family score points for exceptional precision, stability, running time and beauty.

And they all back up their qualities with an exclusive certificate confirming that each and every Senator Excellence has undergone 24 days of comprehensive testing in the Saxon manufactory. A special engraving on the case back guarantees the quality of each watch. An exclusive online portal also gives owners access to detailed test scores for their watch along with information regarding the individual test procedures.

The new Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar in rose opaline and dark blue is limited to 100 pieces and available from end of October exclusively at Glashütte Original Boutiques and authorised dealers.

Glashutte Original – SENATOR Chronometer Edition

Glashutte OriginalSENATOR Chronometer White Gold - Limited Edition 2020

For connoisseurs of the fine art of German watchmaking

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Memories of the famous Glashütte marine chronometers of the past come to mind when one looks at the Senator Chronometer - Limited Edition from Glashütte Original. The masterpiece, limited to 25 pieces, is presented in a newly designed white gold case whose bezel takes the characteristic concave shape of historic marine chronometers. Like its highly accurate predecessors of the 19th and 20th centuries, this chronometer, too, is distinguished by proven rate precision, perfect legibility and exceptional aesthetics.

Precious materials and luxurious decorative finishes

The Senator Chronometer made its debut in 2009 and in 2010 was voted “Watch of the Year” by readers of the German trade magazine Armbanduhren. Since then the elegant timepiece has become a permanent and successful part of the Senator Collection.

The year 2020 brings a particularly exquisite and precious follow-up model featuring not only a white gold case but a dial in solid gold and a gold-plated manufactory movement with refined decorative finishes.

Certified timekeeping and German chronometer standard

The term “chronometer” refers to the most precise timekeepers of their time. These exceptionally accurate instruments were used primarily for navigation on the high seas in order to determine, by means of the precise time of day, the exact position of a ship. The manufacture of the first marine chronometers in Glashütte began in 1886, which were soon tested by the Naval Observatory in Hamburg, where they achieved excellent results.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The standards today remain equally high: a timepiece may only be called a “chronometer” if certified as such by an authorised testing institute. All wristwatch chronometers from Glashütte Original have their rate precision tested by the German Calibration Service, whose tests are based on the German chronometer standard.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The distinguishing feature of the German standard consists in the requirement that the timepiece enable setting of the time precisely to the second, and that the movement complete the entire test while mounted in its case.

 Authentic historic models

The design of the displays is inspired by historic marine chronometers: the small second is positioned at 6 o’clock, the running time display at 12 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In addition, the characteristic Panorama Date is located at 3 o’clock, whose colour matches that of the dial. Thanks to the so-called “jumping date”, the date change takes place precisely at midnight and takes only a few seconds.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The corrector, which allows one to set the date quickly, is located on the side of the case at 4 o’clock. A discreet day/night indication makes it easier to set the time and is located in a round opening within the running time display: from 6 o’clock in the morning until 6 in the evening the small circle appears in white, from 6 p.m. on in black.

Historic models also served to inspire the concave shape of the bezel, which allows more visual space for the dial.  The bezel is fitted with a delicate knurled edge, which served to improve the grip on marine chronometers of the past.

Elegant colouring and surface texture

The elaborate decorative finishing of the dial testifies to the craftsmanship of the experts who make this miniature work of art at the watchmaker’s own dial manufactory in Pforzheim. The blank is made of solid gold and is engraved with great care. The engravings are subsequently filled with black lacquer and burnt in with heat in a kiln.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In a final step the blanks prepared in this way are manually silver plated. An elaborate process calls for a perfectly calibrated mixture of fine silver powder, salt and water to be rubbed on the dial by hand with a brush, in order to achieve a shining silver surface. This results in a fine, even shimmer across the surface texture of the dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Pear-shaped hands in blued steel follow their paths to indicate the hour and minutes. Additional blued hands mark the running time and small second displays, whose silhouettes have been milled into the dial, thus lending the dial additional depth.

Sophisticated engineering

The timepiece is powered by the finely finished Calibre 58-03 manual winding movement, whose wheel bridge is also silver plated and subsequently given a galvanic coating in rose gold. The other frame components are also coated entirely in galvanic rose gold.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The innovative manufactory movement features, among others, a refined second-stop mechanism: when the crown is pulled out, the time display stops and the seconds hand is reset to zero and held there; simultaneously the minute hand advances to the next full minute index. When one then turns the crown to set the time of day, the hand jumps from one minute index to the next – thus ensuring that the correct relationship between seconds and minutes is maintained.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A sapphire crystal case back allows one to take in the classic features of the Glashütte art of watchmaking at a glance: the characteristic three-quarter plate, screw-mounted gold chatons, polished and bevelled steel parts and the hand-engraved balance cock unite exceptional watchmaking expertise with a genuine work of art.

Rounding off the new chronometer’s design is a dark blue Louisiana alligator leather strap with a foldover clasp or pin buckle closure in white gold.

Tribute to a genius in the Glashütte art of watchmaking Alfred Helwig Tourbillon 1920 - Limited Edition

2020 is the 100th anniversary of one of the most sophisticated inventions of haute horlogerie: the design of the Flying Tourbillon by Glashütte master watchmaker Alfred Helwig.

In his honour Glashütte Original presents the Alfred Helwig Tourbillon 1920 Limited Edition, featuring a classic, elegant face.

Inspired by historic models built by Helwig and his students at the German Watchmaking School Glashütte, this new interpretation of the “whirlwind” is positioned, like its predecessors, with understated elegance on the reverse of the movement.

Pure elegance and exceptional craftsmanship

The new timepiece from Glashütte Original is an example of pure elegance, technical sophistication and exceptional craftsmanship.

This splendid masterpiece is limited to 25 pieces and presented in a rose gold case. The dial is fashioned in solid gold and subsequently silver-plated by friction.

A railroad chapter ring and rod index appliques lend the timepiece an elegant, classic appearance. The filigree baton-style hands in rose gold contribute to the understated look of the watch as a whole.

With this model, in fact, the famous Flying Tourbillon is hidden on the reverse of the movement – in keeping with the historic models of Helwig‘s era.

Alfred Helwig and the Flying Tourbillon

The Flying Tourbillon was developed in Glashütte in 1920 by one of the most eminent of German watchmakers: Alfred Helwig. In contrast to the classic tourbillion anchored on both sides, Helwig’s elegant construction required only a single anchor on the underside, with the result that it appears to be flying within its cage.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In an open frame, the balance and escapement revolve steadily around their own axis at precisely 360° per minute. In this way, the tourbillon effectively counters the negative influence of gravity on the rate precision.

The German Watchmaking School Glashütte – the domain of Alfred Helwig

The German Watchmaking School in Glashütte was founded in 1878. Through its training of a great number of master watchmakers, it achieved considerable influence over the art of German watchmaking as a whole. In 1913, at the age of 27, Alfred Helwig was appointed to a position as technical instructor at the famous training institute. There he dedicated himself – together with his master class students – to the development of particularly accurate timepieces featuring cantilevered tourbillons, which Helwig called "rotary gear watches".

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

From 1920, a series of such watches was developed under his direction and in accordance with his concept. When tested by the German Naval Observatory in Hamburg, the general testing centre for precision clocks and watches, they achieved excellent results.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

lfred Helwig taught at the renowned watchmaking school for 41 years, in the course of which he trained more than 800 apprentice watchmakers. His publications remain important reference works for watchmakers, regleurs and watch collectors today.

Since 2008 the historic building that once housed the German Watchmaking School Glashütte has been home not only to the German Watch Museum Glashütte, but also to the Historic Workshop of Glashütte Original, whose staff specialise in the restoration and maintenance of valuable timepieces made in Glashütte.

Final assembly of the 25 pieces of the new limited edition will be performed by these supremely competent specialists, which means this masterpiece will not only bear the name of Alfred Helwig, but will have been produced at the original site of his work as master watchmaker and teacher.

 Sophisticated technology

This timepiece is powered by the finely finished Calibre 54-01 manual winding movement, which features a remarkable running time of 100 hours.

The eye-catching element on the reverse of the movement is, of course, the filigree Flying Tourbillon.

Numerous elaborate decorations and finishes such as the sunburst decoration on the spring barrel cover, Glashütte stripes on the three-quarter plate, blued screws and screw-mounted gold chatons, as well as a great number of polished steel parts, contribute to the fascination of this masterpiece of the Glashütte art of watchmaking.

With the Senator Cosmopolite from Glashütte Original, contemporary globetrotters are well equipped to face any challenge while travelling. The new version of this successful model from the Saxon watchmaker features an exceptionally high-contrast dial in striking midnight blue. The dial ensures optimal legibility for the wearer, anywhere in the world and under all lighting conditions.

nuine globetrotters know only too well how valuable visibility can be since night flights in darkened airplanes are as much a part of their life as sleepless nights after landing on another continent. And when the time outside and the body clock are no longer in sync, a reliable timepiece is absolutely essential.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To address this point, the watchmakers at Glashütte Original and their colleagues at the in-house dial manufactory in Pforzheim have optimised the legibility of the Senator Cosmopolite's dial visuals. Even by daylight, the new, sword-shaped hour and minute hands are clearly set off from the galvanic, midnight blue dial with its sunray finish.

Equally easy to read are the numerals, details and lettering printed in white on the different displays. The twelve characteristic rod index appliques complete the high-contrast design. This exquisite timepiece reveals all its radiance under conditions of low light. The central hands and the hour appliques are inlaid with white Super-LumiNova.

If one's journey demands adaptation to time zone changes, one will certainly find the Senator Cosmopolite to be a reliable ally - all the more so when sleepily reaching for one's watch on a hotel bedside table or glancing at the dial during a long night flight.

Complex and well thought out: functions for the world traveller

With regard to reliability: limitless functionality has always been a signature feature of the Senator Cosmopolite.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The manufactory's automatic Calibre 89-02 movement with 72-hour power reserve makes it possible to display the time of day in two time zones at once, freeing the wearer from the need to calculate the time difference.

A time zone ring offers a choice of all 35 world time zones currently in use, each of them displayed using an official IATA location code representing an international airport in the relevant time zone.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The 24 time zones that are offset from Greenwich Mean Time by a full hour are represented by an IATA code in white. Further eight time zones with half-hour offsets and the three time zones with three-quarter hour offsets are indicated by an IATA code in light blue.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The two windows at 8 o'clock allow the wearer to set summer time (Daylight Saving TimeDST) and standard time (Standard Time - STD), and day/night indicators for both home and destination (local time) can be read at a glance. Any necessary adjustments of the date while traveling forward or back in time, i.e. to the east or west respectively, are handled by the movement's intricate mechanics.

Stylish design in blue and white

On the new blue dial, too, the central hour and minute hands indicate the local time, while the home time is displayed on the auxiliary dial at 12 o'clock. The helpful day/night indicator and integrated power reserve display can also be found here. The small second at 6 o'clock, the day/night indicator for the local time at 9 o'clock and the signature Glashütte Original Panorama Date at 4 o'clock complete the well thought-out design of the Senator Cosmopolite.

Elegance, in its most essential form in the style of Glashütte Original, cuts a fine figure with the new form of the hands and appliques against the blue background. The dial is framed by an alternately polished/ satin-brushed, 44-millimetre stainless steel case.

A blue Louisiana alligator leather strap with pin buckle or fold fastener ensures the new "Cosmopolite" makes an impeccable appearance on the wearer's wrist. The new timepiece is also available with a stainless steel bracelet with an 8-step fine adjustment mechanism.
