GREUBEL FORSEY "ARCHITECTURE":
A CITY ON THE WRIST

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Tourbillon 24 Secondes Architecture is unlike any Greubel Forsey timepiece ever created. Its case is wholly atypical, its construction purposeful, its components sculptural, their mechanical interplay kinetic and the movement – simply spectacular! This new Greubel Forsey calibre within a new convex conical frustrum case shape represents a complete departure from traditional movement construction and aesthetics and brings an architectural experience to the wrist.

History is made of continuous progress and, at times, clear ruptures. Fine Watchmaking is no exception, with 250 years of patiently accumulated achievements and, from time to time, breaches, upheavals or revolutions. Greubel Forsey initiated some of them with the Double Tourbillon 30°, the Quadruple Tourbillon, the Double Balancier and the Mechanical Computer of the QP à Équation, to name just a few.

From an aesthetic point of view, its asymmetrical and convex case shapes, or its inclined escapements have opened up new paths in watchmaking design. But never before has Greubel Forsey taken the technical and aesthetic integration of one of its timepieces as far as it has with the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Architecture.

AN UNOBSTRUCTED VIEW

The new Tourbillon 24 Secondes Architecture is not easy to apprehend. Its components are suspended in space, revealing a harmonious composition of surfaces, shapes and movements.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The case showcases the spectacle within firstly through the large opening on the dial side, encompassed by relief-engraved Greubel Forsey values that inspired this creation: Architecture, Harmonie, Innovation, Technique, Bienfacture, Passion, Science, Exclusivité, Créativité.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

While the case looks perfectly round when observed from the dial side, it reveals its convex shape from other angles, along with its large synthetic sapphire crystal ring which envelopes the entire periphery of the caseband.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Greubel Forsey has been integrating lateral sapphire crystal apertures since as early as 2007, but has never before rendered a movement visible from above, below, and from every angle around the caseband. This new case construction enables an exhaustive look at even the smallest detail of the movement, but also allows light to penetrate almost unhindered.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is light which sculpts matter and reveals architecture in its intimacy, through a play of shadows and reflections. It bathes the movement to reveal it fully and in all of its complexity and is thus itself a vital contribution to the aesthetic of this exclusive timepiece.

A COMPLETELY NEW CASE CONSTRUCTION

In addition to its aesthetic contribution in showcasing the movement, the case offers a very unique experience on the wrist. Its convex shape profile ensures optimal ergonomics and wrist comfort. Pushing the envelope further still, Greubel Forsey has now conceived a case which is not only convex but also resembles a conical frustum in its geometry.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Architecture, the diameter around the caseback (47.05mm) is wider than it is around the bezel (45mm), thus combining the best of two worlds: It contains enough volume to fully showcase the movement architecture within, while at the same time giving the impression of being significantly smaller than it actually is.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Finally, the 50m water-resistant titanium case features three-dimensional, variable geometry lugs, hand-polished with hand-finished straight graining, flowing seamlessly into a rubber strap with embossed text and finished with a titanium folding clasp.

A MOVEMENT UNLIKE ANY OTHER

While the case represents a significant technical feat in its own right, the Greubel Forsey movement remains the star of the show. The polished titanium bridges immediately stand out from the frosted finish of the mainplate, and spectacularly so: emerging seemingly out of nowhere, they wind their way through the movement to finally impose themselves flush with the sapphire crystal.

At 6 o’clock, the Tourbillon 24 Secondes is moored from a large spherical and openworked bridge, whose base remains hidden by design. In its form, the inclined escapement defies gravity, while in its function, it compensates for it.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To solve the problem of critical positions of the oscillator in relation to gravity, the Tourbillon 24 Secondes uses a fast rotation speed in addition to a 25° inclination. These two elements combined contribute to excellent chronometric performance, especially in stable positions.

The barrel bridge at 10 o’clock is sculpted similarly, with polished spherical surfaces, along with polished beveling and countersinks.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The barrel cover is engraved, lacquered and circular-grained and contains three coaxial series-coupled fast-rotating barrels, one of which is equipped with a slipping spring to avoid excess tension.

The caliber’s energy source provides 90 hours of chronometric power reserve, indicated by a moving red triangle over a conical disk at 3 o’clock. It too is held in place by a beautiful polished titanium bridge.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the center, we find two large curved, openworked and polished steel hands, indicating the hours and minutes, mounted on a signature Greubel Forsey tripod bridge.

The time indication is completed at 8 o’clock by a small second on a cylinder with polished flanks – mirroring and echoing every other component in its vicinity

AN EXCLUSIVE FUSION OF TECHNICITY AND AESTHETICS

The 354 parts of the movement are sculpted and arranged asymmetrically yet harmoniously, almost as if they had issued from an organic growth process found in the natural world.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each component is suspended in an unexpected three-dimensional plane, yet it is exactly where it should be aesthetically, technically in relation to every other component.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The movement is vibrant and urban, yet it has space to breathe. The Tourbillon 24 Secondes Architecture is a marvel of contemporary design and a physical manifestation of the Greubel Forsey Art of Invention.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Tourbillon 24 Secondes Architecture will be limited to only 11 pieces in 2022, then to 18 pieces a year between 2023 and 2025 for a total of 65 exclusive timepieces overall.

GREUBEL FORSEY – BALANCIER S² Titanium Edition

GREUBEL FORSEYBALANCIER S² Titanium Edition

REFINED AND POWERFUL: BY STREAMLINING ITS ORIGINAL
BALANCIER S, GREUBEL FORSEY HAS CREATED
AN ASSERTIVE AND MODERN BALANCIER S² .

THE NEW GREUBEL FORSEY FLAGSHIP

With the GMT Sport and the original Balancier S, Greubel Forsey revealed a new facet of its identity. This highly contemporary and exciting approach to fine watchmaking has just been raised to the power of 2, amplifying the very essence of Greubel Forsey.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Greubel Forsey Balancier S² isolates the most powerful elements of the original Balancier S and accentuates and modernises them. Instead of soft curves and a discreet overall aesthetic, the Balancier S² is all about contrast and power. It shares the movement of its predecessor but introduces a new case, new finishing and new design codes.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Greubel Forsey
chose to accentuate the contrast – and therefore the legibility – of its dial, with an intense black or grey backdrop that cuts through the balance bridge between 5 and 9 o'clock.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The edges are sharp and the matt-effect hand- grained finish allows the bridge and indices to stand out much more clearly. The latter have been reduced to their simplest expression, with 12 towering indices for 12 hours.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For the first time, the central double-arched titanium bridge which holds the gear train is openworked: once again, we can see the desire to lighten, purify and return to the essential. The new titanium bracelet reinforces this dynamic. It offers perfect continuity with the titanium case, exuding a robust and contemporary appeal.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Greubel Forsey Balancier S² affirms its place in the Haute Horlogerie of today and tomorrow as a timepiece that sacrifices nothing to the excellence of high-end watchmaking. Yet it’s a timepiece designed for everyday use, not one to simply be stored away in a safe.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Balancier S² also features a slightly larger diameter that helps assert its new personality. Increased to 46.5mm, it is now topped by a striking brushed titanium bezel with polished flanks, instead of the key Greubel Forsey values.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Similarly, the barrel cover no longer features the large “Greubel Forsey” signature, but instead a very modern circular pattern designed exclusively for this model. The Greubel Forsey signature appears under the internal bezel between 12 and 2 o’clock. Suspended high above, the hour and minute hands appear in luminescent white.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Only 88 pieces of this new Balancier S² will be made for the version with a charcoal grey backdrop, for a total of 22 pieces per year from 2022 to 2025. For the version with a light grey background, 16 pieces per year will be released over 4 years, totalling 64 pieces. Both versions will come in a titanium case

A focus on chronometry

The large inclined balance wheel at 7 o’clock stands out. Aiming above all to improve chronometry, it maximises the space offered by the arched case and sapphire crystal, inextricably linking form and function.
Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In their relentless quest for precision and performance, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have already challenged chronometry, notably by reinventing the tourbillon mechanism with the Tourbillon 24 Secondes, Quadruple Tourbillon and the Double Tourbillon 30°. They chose a new approach here, based on their large balance wheel unveiled in 2016.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Entirely developed and made within the Greubel Forsey Atelier, this balance wheel is distinguished by its oversized 12.6mm diameter, ensuring excellent timekeeping performance.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To allow fine timekeeping adjustment of the moment of inertia, the balance wheel rim is fitted with six gold regulating screws, inset so as to limit air friction. In this new hand wound calibre, with several patents pending, the imposing Greubel Forsey balance wheel can be seen in an inclined construction for the very first time.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This 30° angle with respect to the horizontal plane of the movement proves to be an outstanding solution for limiting timing errors due to the effects of gravity on the regulating organ (balance wheel, spring and escapement) in stable positions.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Combined with the large diameter of the balance wheel and the frequency of 21,600 vibrations/hour, it provides this timepiece with excellent chronometric performance – it’s also prominently visible in action due to the unique movement architecture.

A showcase of exceptional craftsmanship

With two coaxial barrels mounted in series, the 307-component movement has a 72-hour chronometric power reserve, indicated on a sector at 2 o’clock using an openworked red-tipped hand.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The central hours and minutes display, with profiled and openworked polished steel hands, is completed by a small seconds hand on the inclined plane of the escapement at 8 o’clock, accentuating the depth and relief of this new calibre.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Following the Greubel Forsey creative spirit, technical and architectural innovation is accomplished with unconditional care and craftsmanship for all the components of the movement – whether these are visible through the sapphire crystal, the transparent caseback or hidden in the mechanical mysteries within.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO
This traditional and irreplaceable artisanal know-how is mastered in the Greubel Forsey Atelier – frosting, polished bevels and countersinks, circular and straight graining highlight even the smallest surfaces. The use of titanium for the mainplate and bridges proved much more difficult for manual hand-finishing than steel or even nickel silver and further increases the technical and aesthetic challenge that this timepiece represents.

S² for sport

The exceptional chronometry of this Greubel Forsey creation is combined with an unequivocally sporty case.  Made of titanium and water resistant to 100 metres, its powerful case shape is distinguished by its lightness and comfort on the wrist. Its robustness protects the movement, in particular its large balance wheel, tested in the Greubel Forsey EWT Laboratory assuring its reliability and chronometric performance at all times.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The flexible and resistant rubber strap with texture in relief reinforces the sporty dimension, with all the comfort of a titanium folding clasp.

With the “Balancier , Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey take another step in their exploration of new technical and aesthetic horizons. Rarely has a watch with a sporting vocation presented such a degree of craftsmanship in movement and case. An exclusive alliance between creativity and performance, the Art of Invention, signed Greubel Forsey.

GREUBEL FORSEY – GMT Earth Black Titanium Edition

GREUBEL FORSEYGMT Earth Tourbillon Black Titanium Edition 2021

 GMT EARTH THE FINAL EDITION

The Earth turns and Greubel Forsey keeps moving. Today, the Atelier unveils the third terrestrial interpretation of its GMT Earth. This unique and now even more modern creation features a new titanium case and is adorned with an even more elegant intense black finish: limited edition of 11 pieces.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Earth is a global village that man cannot explore in a single glance: the vastness of its spaces and curved geometry present us with an never-ending horizon. At least, until now. With the GMT Earth, Greubel Forsey has created a watch that, for the first time, makes it possible to appreciate the entirety of the world in a single glance.

This technical feat first appeared in 2011. At the time of the first “GMT”, the Earth was not yet fully revealed. Seven years later, the design of the Earth was finally complete: visible from all angles in its new sapphire alcove, it appears as though it is floating in space. On the front as well as the back, the laser-engraved Earth shows world times that are both quick and easy to read.

A third version in titanium

The first version of the GMT Earth was in white gold. The second, in platinum. Today, this timepiece is available with a new titanium case. Almost twice as light as steel, it is impervious to temperature variations, non-magnetic, hypo-allergenic and eight times stronger than gold or platinum, but requires extremely technical know-how and equipment to be manufactured and finished.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The GMT Earth in titanium will be available in a limited edition of 11 pieces, three times less than the original version. Weighing just 117 g, the weight of the strap has been reduced by two-thirds. The case has lost just over a third of its weight.

Titanium is used not only for the entire case, but also the bridges, the GMT push-piece, the crown and the folding buckle, the latter two being the components most exposed to shocks and scratches.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To accompany the light and matt tones of titanium, Greubel Forsey opted for a black finish on the dial. It is applied to the spotted bottom plate and to all the frosted bridges, with straight flanks, polished bevelling and countersinks. This finish is also featured on an all-black natural rubber strap, whose inner face is engraved with the cardinal values of the Greubel Forsey Atelier and which are visible on the bezel.

A clear and intuitive display
The GMT Earth displays four key pieces of information on its dial side.

The first is the off-centre hours, minutes and seconds display. The first two feature large openworked hands finished with a Super-LumiNova tip, complemented by a small seconds hand on a sapphire disc at three o’clock.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On the left is the GMT indicator, whose red hand effortlessly stands out against a hand-engraved black gold disc filled with lacquer. The third, located opposite the crown, is the power reserve, designed following the same process: a black, engraved gold segment, filled with lacquer and covered by a silver-polished steel hand.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Finally between 7 o'clock and 9 o'clock, the Earth occupies the largest space, completing a full rotation in 24 hours. The engraved sapphire ring around the equator acts as a day / night indication and allows you to instantly see which hemisphere is in the daytime and which is at night.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTOLocated on the side of the caseband, a final window opens to show the equator. Thanks to this, the Earth really can be seen from all angles. Finally, on the caseback side, the worldtime display indicator completes the design. 24 time zones indicate the UTC of 24 major cities - with those that observe daylight savings on a white background.

The Tourbillon 24 Secondes, an unrivalled invention

The GMT Earth boasts Greubel Forsey’s third invention. The Tourbillon 24 Secondes uses a fast rotation speed and is set at an angle to resolve the positioning problem in relation to gravity and which is crucial for the operation of the oscillator. The 25° angle and the rapid rotation of the tourbillon cage significantly improve the chronometric performance of a system containing only one tourbillon, especially those in fixed positions.
