Launched in 1965, the Edox Hydro Sub was an ultra-tough diver’s watch that was water-resistant to an incredible, for the time, 500m.

Now nearly 50 years later, Swiss watch maker Edox has brought this legend of the deep back to play a special part in a unique North Pole challenge and to mark the company’s 130th anniversary in 2014. Limited to 350 pieces worldwide, the Edox Hydro Sub North Pole Limited Edition will be the official timepiece of an expedition by champion free diver Christian Redl and Australian photographer Markus Fillinger to the geographic North Pole in February 2015.

The pair will trek from northern Canada through extreme conditions (temperatures down to -40C) to the Pole where Redl will make the first-ever free dive - without breathing gear - under the ice cap. Redl will wear the Hydro Sub during the mission and on his historic plunge into the frigid waters.

The Hydro Sub will play a vital part in the mission; like its 1965 predecessor it is water-resistant to 500m but this model also has a unique moveable crown protector to shield the crown from the extreme conditions Redl and Fillinger will encounter.

The 49 mm watch has an officially certified Swiss automatic chronometer movement at its heart and the caseback will be specially engraved to mark the North Pole mission.

The Hydro Sub comes with a metal bracelet but also a collector’s box housing an additional orange and water-resistant leather strap and tool to change the bracelet.

The Hydro Sub pays testament to Edox’s expertise in superbly engineered and highly water-resistant timepieces, a heritage began in 1961 with the launch of the revolutionary Delfin, water-resistant to 200 m thanks to its cutting edge double-crown gasket, double caseback and extra shock proofing.

In 1971, leading Swiss watchmaker Edox introduced the Geoscope, the world’s first genuine WorldTimer wristwatch. Jumping into a freezing, ice-covered lake and then plunging 75 metres under the ice into the pitch black - all the while holding your breath, only a 5mm neoprene wetsuit to help block out the mind-numbing cold.

However free diving champion Christian Redl is neither mad, nor reckless - and his attempt next month to break his own world record for free diving under the ice, dubbed Mission X-Deep, will be the culmination of many, many months of meticulous preparation.

When 38-year-old Redl, nicknamed The Iceman, enters the frigid waters of Austria's Lake Weissensee on February 15 he faces a test of human endurance that requires ice-cool concentration, superb physical conditioning and - thanks to boutique Swiss watchmaker Edox - an ultra-reliable dive watch.

Edox is official timing partner for Austrian-born Redl, who will be wearing a Edox Iceman III timepiece on the dive.
The Iceman III is the ideal companion for Redl's extreme dive exploits and a successor to the Edox Iceman I he wore in 2011 when he set his world under-ice free diving record (61 metres), also at Lake Weissensee.
The Iceman III is perfectly suited to Redl's Mission X-Deep; water-resistant to 1000m, the case is forged from super-tough 316L stainless steel with black PVD coating and the 45mm watch features a striking black carbon fibre dial with ceramic unidirectional diver's bezel.
A Swiss quartz chronograph movement ensures super-accurate timekeeping, essential for Redl's dangerous task.

Redl will use a powered water "scooter" to plunge down a guide rope into the lake's icy void and return to the surface via the same method. With the super cold and pressure squashing his lungs to the size of a fist, the Austrian will require the utmost concentration - and precision readings from the Iceman III - to keep focused mentally on the task at hand.
 

But ever since 1996 when Redl, then aged 20, saw the cult film The Big Blue and took up the extreme sport of free diving this is the type of challenge he has relished - and conquered. Redl is now considered one of the foremost free-diving specialists of his generation.

Dedicated to the upcoming World record attempt by Christian Redl to conquer the depths of Gokyo Lake

Christian Redl, extreme freediver and holder of the world record for diving under ice with a depth of 200 feet, has decided to test his limits once again. Placing his fantastic experience of extreme freediving at the service of science, Christian Redl has joined the Gokyo project, which will reach its culmination from 6 to 27 October 2012.

The six 203 feet depth Gokyo Lakes a sacred shrine of both Hindu and Buddhist philosophy are situated in Nepal at an altitude of between 15'400 and 16'900 feet and are the world's highest freshwater lake system.

Here in October, the conditions will be extreme, as everywhere in the Himalayas. The cold, wind and snow, water temperature and altitude become life-threatening challenges. With barely 14% of oxygen in the air the blood thickens, cutting off the supply to the body's vital functions.

At this altitude, walking and ascending summits become superhuman tasks. Freediving will therefore be a gigantic challenge that Christian Redl will have to overcome in this experiment where pulmonary oedema would prove fatal. Planning every detail, undergoing rigorous training and supported by a team of experienced scientists, he will subject himself to real-life tests to evaluate the transformation of his metabolism during freedives at this high altitude.
