CHOPARD – L.U.C 1860 In Lucent Steel™ Salmon Dial

CHOPARDL.U.C 1860 In Lucent Steel™ Salmon Dial Automatic 2023

In a creative gesture imbued with the innate elegance of the L.U.C collection, Chopard Manufacture draws inspiration from the first timepiece in the collection, presented in 1997, by combining the sophistication of a guilloché dial in salmon-coloured solid gold, a 36.5 mm case made of Chopard’s exclusive Lucent Steel™ alloy, as well as a finely crafted chronometer-certified movement. L.U.C Calibre 96.40-L is wound by a gold micro-rotor and equipped with the two barrels based on Chopard Twin technology.

Eagerly awaited by Haute Horlogerie collectors, this model is as colourful as it is elegant, while celebrating the Manufacture’s skills expressed through meticulous finishing duly recognised by the Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark.

The L.U.C collection has once again demonstrated its refined nature by offering a bold reissue of its very first timepiece: the L.U.C 1860, named "Watch of the Year" by Swiss magazine Montres Passion (Uhrenwelt) right from its launch in 1997. Today, a new version in Lucent Steel™ and a salmon-coloured guilloché gold dial continues the Manufacture's approach of combining respect for watchmaking tradition with innovation.

Lucent Steel™: the alchemist’s quest

For the first time in its history, the L.U.C collection draws on the luminous brilliance, resistance and purity that are key assets of Lucent Steel™, an exclusive alloy through which Chopard has chosen to treat steel as a precious metal.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Resulting from four years of research and development, this steel endowed with properties comparable to those of surgical steel, entered the watchmaking world with the 2019 launch of the Alpine Eagle collection. Today, the use of this material – 80% composed of recycled elements – in the Maison’s other collections bears witness to Chopard's ongoing commitment to responsible luxury.

The aesthetic harmony of elegant contrasts

At the heart of the 36.50 mm Lucent Steel™ case nestles an elegant two-tone dial. Made of solid gold, it features a subtle salmon hue obtained by galvanic treatment and contrasting with the white gold touches of the chevron hour-markers – whose herringbone shape echoes that of the slender, facetted Dauphine-type hands – as well as by the finely guilloched rings marking off the minutes scale, the central zone and the small seconds counter.

The dial centre is meticulously hand-guilloched in a radiating pattern surrounding the historical Chopard logo – housed in a cartouche at 12 o'clock – while the chapter ring is satin-brushed. The snailed small seconds counter is positioned at 6 o'clock in a beautiful balance of symmetry and proportions, further accentuated by the absence of date aperture which also contributes to the pared-down design.

The anthracite grey grained calfskin leather strap, with its tone-on-tone stitching, complements the refined colours and textures skilfully orchestrated by the workshops.

Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark: a guarantee of fine craftsmanship

Combining their vertically integrated approach with the validation of independent authorities, the workshops have submitted this timepiece to the scrutiny of the prestigious Poinçon de Genève. The latter guarantees the quality and smooth functioning of watches assembled in the Canton.

The L.U.C 1860 takes this label of excellence to new heights, as it is rarely applied to a steel watch. However, the rendering of Lucent Steel™, the delicacy of the dial colour and the finesse of its motifs, along with the precision rating of the movement, transcend conventions, placing this model firmly in the upper echelons of contemporary watchmaking.

Certified mechanical performance

The L.U.C 1860 timepiece is equipped with the L.U.C 96.40-L movement, whose refinement is all the more remarkable given its mere 3.30 mm thickness. This movement is a variation on the very first L.U.C calibre, which marked the creation of the Chopard Manufacture watchmaking workshops in 1996. It is equipped with an off-centre micro-rotor in 22-carat gold, whose high inertia enables the efficient winding of two barrels. Stacked in accordance with Chopard Twin technology, these barrels store the energy required for a total 65-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The L.U.C 96.40-L movement drives a small seconds indication, a prerequisite for chronometer certification by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute. Reflecting the L.U.C collection’s innate sophistication, it is also equipped with a stop-second function and a swan’s-neck index assembly.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The latter serves to carefully calibrate the active length of the balance-spring, thus enabling finer adjustment of the oscillating frequency and hence of the movement’s rate. Finally, all the bridges are carefully chamfered and adorned with a Côtes de Genève motif.

A new American home with deep significance

To celebrate the opening of its Chopard New York boutique in the Crown Building on Fifth Avenue, the Maison presents a special edition of its jumping-hour timepiece: the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 Fifth Avenue Edition.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Housed in a 40-millimetre case featuring the L.U.C collection’s characteristically sleek lines and crafted from ethical 18-carat rose gold, its innovative and ultra-sophisticated L.U.C 98.06-L movement is equipped with four barrels based on the exclusive Chopard Quattro technology enabling up to eight days of power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This makes it one of the rare jumping-hour watches with such a degree of autonomy. On the Grand Feu enamel dial, Chopard Manufacture’s enamelling Artisan has reinterpreted the Statue of Liberty through a pop-art-inspired design. From movement to dial, this one-of-a-kind model is entirely produced in-house thanks to the artistic crafts mastered by the artisans of the Manufacture, thus ensuring a high level of finishing duly rewarded by the prestigious Poinçon de Genève.

In 2021, Chopard Manufacture introduced its first-ever jumping-hour watch in the form of a pure interpretation combining an understated design with the technical boldness typical of the L.U.C. collection. The workshops are now offering an exclusive reinterpretation of this model. Combining tradition and modernity, the case of the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 Fifth Avenue Edition in ethical 18-carat rose gold features rounded shapes inspired by the hunter-type cases of the pocket watches once designed by Louis-Ulysse Chopard.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The L.U.C 98.06-L movement with which it is equipped is one of the few in this category of watches – which generally consume a great deal of energy – to offer up to eight days of power reserve. Thanks to the four stacked and series-coupled barrels based on the unique Chopard Quattro technology – which usually allows up to 216 hours of autonomy – the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 Fifth Avenue Edition maintains an over 190- hour power reserve despite the amount of energy required for the rotation of the hours disc.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Visible through a transparent arena case-back, this highly complicated mechanical movement with manual winding guarantees reliability and precision within an overall thickness of just 4.85 millimetres. The balance-spring is equipped with a Phillips terminal curve that precisely controls the oscillations of the regulating organ – a feat of which only authentic Fine Watchmaking manufactures are capable. The movement is also fitted with a swan’s neck regulator enabling fine adjustment of this calibre.

Artistic craft: a tribute dial fashioned by the Chopard Manufacture enamelling Artisan

Equally noble both inside and out, the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 Fifth Avenue Edition timepiece displays the time on a blue dial adorned with a monument cherished by Americans: the Statue of Liberty, standing proudly at the mouth of the Hudson River

On this occasion, it is reinterpreted with Chopard’s characteristic boldness through a pop-art-inspired design finely crafted by the Manufacture's enamelling Artisan.

Crafted on a base in ethical 18-carat rose gold, this Grand Feu enamelled dial is fired several times at very high temperatures (820°C). The hours appear through an aperture positioned at 6 o’clock so as to ensure that the minutes hand does not obscure the sight of the hours change, which takes place instantaneously.

Patience, constancy and meticulousness were essential to the creation of this enamelled dial. The integration of this artistic craft demonstrates Chopard CoPresident Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s desire to make Chopard Manufacture a centre of excellence dedicated to traditional watchmaking expertise.

Precision: Poinçon de Genève-certified finishing

The high-quality work devoted to the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 Fifth Avenue Edition has earned it the Poinçon de Genève. Governed by strict criteria of excellence, this highly coveted label is awarded exclusively to a few watchmaking creations whose beauty provides the perfect setting for a flawlessly functioning mechanism. It guarantees not only the quality, precision and reliability of the movement and the watch as a whole, but also ensures that the assembly was carried out in the canton of Geneva, the historical cradle of Fine Watchmaking.

Precise adjustments, wearer comfort and readability, movement bridges entirely adorned with the Côtes de Genève motif and finely bevelled components: these are the characteristics that make the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 Fifth Avenue Edition a refined timepiece from both aesthetic and technical standpoints.

CHOPARD – ALPINE EAGLE XL Chrono in Lucent Steel A223

CHOPARDALPINE EAGLE XL Chrono in Lucent Steel A223 with Blue or Black Dial Automatic 2022

The Alpine Eagle collection of sporty-chic timepieces is introducing its flyback chronograph fitted for the first time with a contemporary rubber strap. The Alpine Eagle XL Chrono in Lucent Steel A223 is available in Aletsch Blue or Pitch Black dial and remains strongly inspired – like the entire collection – by the power of the eagle and the beauty of the Alps.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The three patents for its Chopard 03.05-C chronometer-certified movement with flyback function testify to innovations enhancing its accuracy as well as its smooth handling.

A cutting-edge chronograph movement

The Alpine Eagle XL Chrono welcomes two models featuring a sporty and masculine extra-large 44 mm-diameter case forged from Lucent Steel A223, an innovative steel alloy developed by Chopard for its anti-allergenic properties, its robustness and its incomparable brilliance achieved through a meticulous recasting process. The discreet right-hand pushers relating to the chronograph functions are subtly integrated on either side of the crown guards and preserve the collection’s characteristically harmonious shape and symmetry.

Beating at the heart of these two new models, the Chopard 03.05-C movement developed and assembled by the artisans in the Maison’s watchmaking workshops is one of the world’s most innovative chronograph movements.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It has a 60-hour power reserve and features an elaborate design guaranteeing accurate adjustments and optimal use of the chronograph functions. Equipped with a column wheel, it is also enhanced by several technical innovations that have earned Chopard three patents stemming from the boldness of its R&D teams.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

First of all, it is equipped with a unidirectional gear drive system that prevents energy losses while ensuring rapid winding, a function much appreciated in the inherently energy-hungry chronograph category. In addition, its vertical clutch ensures accurate time-measurement starts. This chronograph calibre is also of the flyback variety, enabling smooth successive timing operations thanks to three pivoting hammers with elastic arms facilitating zero-setting of the counters.

Equipped with a stop-seconds function enabling accurate adjustments of the watch, the Chopard 0.305-C movement is chronometer-certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute.

An sporty contemporary bracelet

Already available with an integrated metal bracelet and a leather option, the Alpine Eagle XL Chrono model treats itself to a new look with a rubber strap. The multiple advantages of this material make it an ideal ally for sports chronographs subjected to the most extreme conditions: water-resistant, lastingly reliable, malleable and comfortable to wear, it gives the timepiece a particularly dynamic look.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In using rubber, the workshops of the Maison have preserved the elegance and identity of the Alpine Eagle by reprising the shape of the metal-link bracelet – slightly tapering with a raised central cap – that is an integral part of the collection’s DNA. The material is different, while the identity and well-balanced proportions remain signature features of these new contemporary chronographs. Rubber also lends itself to colour, since the strap adapts to the blue or black dial of each of the two new Alpine Eagle XL Chrono models.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Chopard cultivates a longstanding tradition of sporty rubber straps. In 1995, the Maison’s workshops were among the first to adopt this material with its strong creative potential by reproducing the rubber treads of 1960s Dunlop tyres on the straps of its Mille Miglia chronograph collection. This trend that has been continuously nurtured by the Mille Miglia models has since spread widely across the watchmaking scene.

A dial in the eagle’s eye

Drawing inspiration from the beauty of Nature, the collection remains loyal to the shade of its dial referring to the Aletsch glacier (the largest in Switzerland) for the blue version; and to the intense blackness of mountain nights when wild Nature reclaims its rights for the Pitch Black dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The texture and sunburst pattern evoke an eagle's iris. The seconds hand with its arrow-shaped tip flies over a highly legible display punctuated by snailed counters. The hands and hour-markers are coated with Grade XI Super-LumiNova®, a treatment offering the advantage of retaining the same intensity over the years, while naturally more luminous than traditional Super-LumiNova®.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The tachymeter scale bearing discreet red 100, 160 and 240 graduations appears on the inner bezel ring. It is divided into four steps, with different intervals of 5, 10, 20 or 40 km/h per line. This arrangement facilitates reading the average speed measurements and contributes to the dial’s overall aesthetic dynamic.

Reinterpreting an icon

Devised by three generations of men in the Scheufele family, the Alpine Eagle collection is a modern reinterpretation of the St. Moritz watch, the first horological creation by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele in the late 1970s. With its pure and assertive design, Alpine Eagle enriches this heritage with powerful inspiration drawn from Nature. A round case with stylised flanks; a crown engraved with a compass rose; a bezel with eight functional indexed screws; as well as textured dial with deep hues and luminescent indications: Alpine Eagle embodies impeccable elegance expressed in a resolutely contemporary manner.

CHOPARD – L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer Edition

CHOPARD L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer "Forest Green" Yellow Gold Limited Edition 2022

The new L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer timepiece harbours a wealth of secrets and symbols. On one side, an exceptionally refined 18-carat hand-guilloché dial. On the other, an equally guilloché officer-type back cover that opens to reveal the ultra-thin 3.30 mm L.U.C 96.01-L movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thus equipped with the first Chopard Manufacture calibre presented in 1997, endowed with Chopard Twin technology and a 22-carat gold micro-rotor, the L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer model epitomises all the elegance and fine craftsmanship of Chopard Haute Horlogerie.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This 50-piece limited edition timepiece featuring a 40 mm-diameter case crafted in ethical 18-carat yellow gold and framing a Forest Green dial is chronometer-certified and bears the Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark. It adorns the wrist of contemporary gentlemen with both distinction and discretion.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A gentleman’s elegance lies in a subtle blend of delicacy, secrecy and mystery. Reflecting this inherent modesty, the spirit of L.U.C XPS timepieces has always been imbued with a sense of discretion, purity and refinement. With its guilloché dial and its hinged officer-type back cover, the L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer model remains entirely true to this chosen path. The honeycomb motif appearing on the outside of the back cover matches that of the dial, naturally catching the light and capturing the gaze.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A closer look reveals the true nature of the L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer watch, when the wearer presses the crown to open the back cover concealing its sapphire crystal case-back. It opens via an ingenious spring system and remains in that position. This same mechanism makes a pleasing click upon closing, thus confirming that the cover is properly locked.

Artistry and ritual

Officer-type back covers served to protect pocket watch glasses, as well as providing space for unique and personalised engravings. With the transition to the wrist, the watch industry no longer had any real need for these precious ‘bonnets’ concealing the ‘engine’, yet the sense of artistry and ritual remained.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Forest Green dial of the L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer timepiece is crafted on a solid gold base. Its outer section is sunburst satin-brushed and its small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock is finely snailed. A hand-guilloché honeycomb motif adorns the central part, a motif appearing in an enlarged version on the outside of the back cover. This design refers to two key landmarks in the history of Chopard.

A proud engraving heritage

The first marks the creation of the first watch made by Chopard Manufacture, the L.U.C 1860, launched in 1997 and graced with a central hand-guilloché motif. The second dates back to the founding of the Maison by Louis-Ulysse Chopard

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Since its creation, and until the 1920s, Chopard laid claim to the symbolism represented by bees. Its watches at the time were all engraved, both on their movements and inside their covers, with a beehive surrounded by bees. When Chopard Manufacture was created in 1996, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele chose to reprise this image by associating it with certain models in the L.U.C collection, thus named in tribute to the Maison founder.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The inside of the back cover protecting the L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer picks up the hand-engraving of the beehive and bees, with the latter appearing in a random manner that ensures each model is truly unique.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The ornamental appeal of these various engravings is underpinned by references to the nature of bees: industrious, honest and modest, all essential contributors to an overall achievement that holds together through cooperation and hard work. The elegance of the L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer model, its perfectly balanced and timeless proportions, and the quality of its craftsmanship confirmed by the Poincon de Genève quality hallmark, all echo the ethical approach that guided its creation.

L.U.C: 25 years of horological excellence

A single press on the crown-integrated pusher of the L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer timepiece is enough to open the hinged back cover, as a pleasing prelude to a fascinating discovery.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This slender cover barely changes the volume of the watch which remains a mere 7.7 mm thick, nor its feel on the wrist. It merely serves to conceal – inside the case in ethical 18-carat yellow gold case with its vertical satin-brushed flanks – the ultra-thin L.U.C Calibre 96.01-LIn 1997, this innovative movement gave rise to the L.U.C collection by equipping the yellow gold L.U.C model: the first timepiece by Chopard Manufacture, named “Watch of the Year” at the time of its launch by the Swiss Montres Passion (Uhrenwelt) magazine.
