Two new models enhance the Clifton Club collection:
a GMT version for modern-day travellers and
a bronze automatic version with a refined neo-retro look

The Clifton Club collection is expanding this year with two new automatic references. Built for adventure, they elegantly revisit the codes of sportsmanship while respecting Swiss watchmaking traditions. These new watches are loyal to the Baume & Mercier spirit: high-performance, natural elegance, and easy everyday wear.

The Clifton Club GMT: a version for modern-day travellers

Attractive and modern, the Clifton Club GMT watch has been designed to accompany its wearers on all occasions, whether professional or personal. Powered by a Swiss self-winding mechanical movement, with the second time zone displayed by a central hand and the date visible in an aperture at 3 o'clock, this new reference has many advantages, including a 42 -hour power reserve. With a diameter of 42mm, its polished/satin-finished stainless steel case, equipped with a protected crown, fits all wrists. Even better, thanks to a contained thickness of 10.6 mm, the Clifton Club GMT watch slips easily under a shirt sleeve, combining discretion with sportiness.

The time in the second meridian is read by a central hand and a deep azure blue aluminium bezel, graduated over 24 hours. A sensational complication for globetrotters, the instant display of a second time-zone makes it possible to see at a glance the local time and the reference time at home. With a design that is both contemporary and classic, this reference leaves nothing to chance; every detail has been carefully considered. Its screw-down crown and the opaline black of its dial give it a sporty look, evoking both refinement and performance. To be totally legible in the dark, the hour and minute hands and the Phi logo at 12 o'clock are coated with white Superluminova blue emission.

The robust Clifton Club GMT is also equipped with an antiglare scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a screw-down full case back decorated with the Clifton Club coat of arms; all ensuring a water-resistance of 10 ATM, to a depth of 100 metres. The Clifton Club GMT is available in two versions, with two bracelets. The first option: a black "All Road" calfskin strap decorated with sailcloth-like patterns and a blue rubberised calfskin lining. The second option: a polished/satin-finished three-row stainless steel bracelet. Both bracelets feature an adjustable triple folding buckle and two stainless steel side push -pieces for maximum safety and an easy opening. The Clifton Club GMT from Baume & Mercier is made for modern-day travellers who are looking for a multifunctional sporty-chic watch.

The Clifton Club Bronze: when colour rhymes with style

With this collection, Baume & Mercier offers multifunctional watches that can be worn on every occasion, whether at the office or on holiday, in the gym or for a special event. Originally made of stainless steel, the Clifton Club watch is presented this year in a bronze version, giving it a unique neo-retro charm. Without losing an ounce of its athletic identity, it is available in four dial versions (black, brown, blue, green), and is up to the minute with the trend for bronze yet retaining everything that has made the watch such a success: a distinctive design combining elegance, sporting prowess, functionality and wearing comfort. With a universal diameter of 42mm, the polished/satin-finished bronze case of this new Clifton Club will acquire a patina over time. It's all there: interacting with the effects of oxidation, it will develop a singular colour hue.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The advantage of using bronze lies in the fact that it is a living, changing and non-magnetic material, thus ensuring better protection of the movement's precision. As it oxidizes, the bronze case will become darker in colour, a deeper brown, and may in time develop a greenish sheen. All these chromatic nuances are due to exposure to air, water or sunlight. At the heart of this exceptional case which is only 10.3 mm thick, is a proven "Swiss made” self-winding mechanical movement with 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz). The sporty lines of the Clifton Club Bronze are also highlighted by its screw-down bronze crown, its unidirectional rotating bezel, a water- resistance to 10ATM and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that makes it suitable for everyday use, whatever the situation.

Fully in tune with the times, the Clifton Club Bronze is available in four versions. The first is the black dial and black "All Road" calfskin version with sailcloth-like patterns and a blue rubberised calfskin lining – available with an additional brown nubuck calfskin strap. The second version has a brown dial and a brown nubuck calfskin strap with off-white topstitching and an additional black rubber strap. The third version has a blue dial and blue rubber strap.

The fourth version has a green dial and a brown nubuck calfskin strap with off-white topstitching. Again, for these two last references, an additional bracelet is available: a black calfskin strap with a green rubberised calfskin lining. As would be expected, the screw-down stainless steel case back is decorated with the Clifton Club collection coat of arms. Each bracelet is equipped with a pin buckle with stainless steel loops. Both stylish and adventurous, the Clifton Club Bronze watches symbolize the watchmaking versatility that the men of today are looking for.

Baume & Mercier – Capeland Passione Engadina Rally Edition

Baume & MercierCapeland Passione Engadina Rally Chronograph Limited Edition

Baume & Mercier celebrates the new generation
 at the "Passione Engadina" rally

This fifth edition of the exceptional vintage car rally, Passione Engadina, has just taken place, from August 19th to 21st, in St. Moritz, Switzerland. This was the third time that Baume & Mercier joined the event, and this time as the principal sponsor. This rally is distinctive for its passion and heritage, since a number of the teams are father/son and father/daughter duos. The nine "juniors" participating in the event all received a model from the Classima collection, specially designed by Baume & Mercier for the up-and-coming young generation.

The fifth edition of the gentleman's rally of St. Moritz, Passione Engadina, focusing on Alfa Romeo, was held from August 19th to 21st. Only Italian collectors' cars manufactured before 1980 were admitted. The rally teams – of which many were father/son or father/daughter duos or otherwise members of the same family – set off in search of a unique driving experience. The bywords of this event were energy, team spirit, elegance, style, heritage, passion and tradition. Noble notions that matter just as much to Baume & Mercier. "As a traditional luxury company, these values are essential for us, too. For 186 years, we have been perpetuating our founders' convictions," explains Alain Zimmermann, CEO of Baume & Mercier. Loyal to its motto, "Life is about moments", the brand got involved in the event for the third time this year to offer the participants unforgettable experiences.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The winning teams in each of the five categories (cars manufactured before 1945; from 1946 to 1960; from 1961 to 1970; from 1971 to 1980; and sportscars) were given generous awards. Each driver received a Capeland Flyback Passione Engadina, while each co-driver was awarded an elegant Baume & Mercier desk clock.

As a supporter and avid follower of the young new generation, Baume & Mercier also wished to present each of the nine "juniors" of this rally with a gift as symbolic as it is appropriate: a Classima bearing the engraving "Passione Engadina" followed by the name of the participant.

A special edition of the Capeland reflecting
the retro charm of the 1950s

In a tribute to this fifth encounter of historic cars, Baume & Mercier designed a limited- edition emblematic watch, the "Capeland Flyback Passione Engadina". "Capeland" is derived from the term "escape", symbolizing the pleasure of embarking on a voyage and the freedom to enjoy the time fully and intensely. Inspired by the vintage 1948 monopush-piece chronograph of the Baume & Mercier museum, the models stands out with its subtle, traditional look, of an elegance that emphasizes the retro charm of the composition.

The historically- inspired design of this exceptional 44 mm watch features a domed matte white dial in a retro style, Arabic numerals, and elegant, blued steel Breguet hands with hollow moon tips, while the red hands of the chronograph add a sporting touch to the timepiece. The watch case in polished/satin-finished steel is also inspired by the aesthetic of the 1950s, and perfectly coordinates with the elegance, classic beauty and timeless allure of the Italian collectors' cars – both sports and luxury automobiles – presented at this exclusive event. The telemeter and tachymeter of this fully loaded watch enable it to measure not only distance but also speed.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

In keeping with Baume & Mercier's renown as a watchmaker of extremely precise timepieces, this chronograph also features a self-winding mechanical movement made in Switzerland (La Joux-Perret 8147-2). The Flyback function makes it easy to time a rally. With unparalleled elegance, this timepiece is mounted on a black alligator strap lined with rubber-like red calfskin, finished with a pin buckle and engraved with the Passione Engadina logo. Each of these pieces meets with the brand's exacting standards, and collectors' car aficionados will undoubtedly feel driven to have a look!

Inspired by a 1948 mono-pusher chronograph, this watch was created specially to honor the fifth edition of the legendary Passione Engadina rally in Italy.
The case, in stainless steel, measures 44mm. It has double AR-coated sapphire crystals and it is water resistant to 50 meters.

Movement is the Swiss automatic La Joux-Perret caliber 8147-2 with 25 jewels, 28, 800 vph and a power reserve of 42 hours. It features a flyback chronograph complication.

The dial is white with black Arabics, a blue telemetric scale, a red tachymetric scale and blued Breguet hands. Red hands for the chronograph functions.
It comes on a black alligator leather strap with red rubber lining, red contrast stitching and a steel Ardillon buckle.

Baume & Mercier – CLIFTON Perpetual Calendar

Baume & Mercier CLIFTON Perpetual Calendar Red Gold NEW

In keeping with its motto – Accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality” – Baume & Mercier has chosen to focus on the very essence of watchmaking functions in this latest addition to the CLIFTON Perpetual Calendar collection.

An homage to astronomical observation and the beauty of celestial mechanics, the new Clifton Perpetual Calendar embodies one of the most successful and fascinating complications of distinguished watchmaking. What other instrument better connects humanity with the universe? Nestled within a stunning 18K red gold case, this subtle mechanism negotiates all the particularities of the Gregorian calendar with its 31, 30 or 28-day months and the periodic return of February 29th.
Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ..                   BIG FOTO

A truly mechanical challenge for watchmakers, the perpetual calendar is a symbol of human ingenuity for tracking the earth and its moon as they orbit within the solar system. By indicating the date, the day of the week, the month and the phases of the moon, and by automatically keeping track of the variable length of each month and the cycle of leap years, this Clifton Perpetual Calendar establishes itself within the line age of the most complicated date-tracking watches, those which do not require any date correction before the 1st of March 2100, a non leap year that appears three centuries out of four.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ..                   BIG FOTO

A great classic of watchmaking complications, the perpetual calendar represents a challenge of construction and miniaturization. The programming and reproduction of celestial mechanics is the most successful of the so-called «astronomical» complications. To keep track of all the variations of the calendar, the Clifton Perpetual Calendar is thus endowed with a «mechanical memory» of 1461 days, the equivalentof four years, which animates the self-winding Vaucher 5401 movement within the watch, designed from a Dubois Depraz 5100 Module.

Always with respect to the art of watchmaking, the elegant finishings of the calibre include the Côtes de Genève on the bridges and stippling on the bottom plate as well as blued steels crews. The micro-rotor, which makes it possible to pare down the movement fora case that is barely 4.2 mm thick, is decorated with the brand’s Phi symbol and asnailed décor.Ticking away at 21,600 vibrations/hour for a power reserve of 48 hours, this finely finished calibre can be admired through the sapphire crystal back of the elegant 42 mm case in 18K red gold with carefully drawn curves.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ..                   BIG FOTO

Display side, the new Clifton Perpetual Calendar captivates by its simplicity: topped with a sapphire“chevée-shaped” crystal for better readability, its silvered opaline domed dial is stylish and classic, complemented by numerals and stamped indexes in 18K red gold, while the blued hands indicate the watch’s calendar functions. The date appears at 3o’clock, the days of the week at 9 o’clock while the months and the leap years appear at 12 o’clock.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ..                   BIG FOTO

The timeless elegance of this Clifton Perpetual Calendar extends to its black alligator strap with a pin buckle in 18K red gold. In line with Baume & Mercier’s philosophy of offering accessible timepieces, including those which boast complex watchmaking complications, this model was designed with a care and an attention to detail worthy of the finest watchmaking.

Baume & Mercier – Capeland Shelby® Cobra Chronograph Edition

Baume & MercierCapeland Shelby® Cobra Chronograph Limited Edition

“Building your own sports car is a dream for any racer, and that’s certainly what the Cobra has been for me.” — Carroll Shelby

Birth of a Legend
In every life, there are rare moments that define who we truly are, and what we have set out to accomplish. Marked by emotion, passion and pride, these are far more than a time to remember. They are timeless in every regard, destined to live on forever as witness to the triumph of human will and spirit.
Celebrating such moments has been the raison d’être of Baume & Mercier since our founding in 1830. From our first handcrafted timepiece to our present day collection, each reflects our unyielding belief that marking the passage of time is about more than minutes and hours. A Baume & Mercier watch is chosen by its owner because it reflects a unique aspect of life’s richest memories. A symbol worn with pride, because it communicates an individual spirit all its own.

Today, we are pleased to share a new celebration, and a new partnership. 50 years ago, automotive legend Carroll Shelby achieved a victory that would change the course of international racing forever: the 1965 FIA International Championship of GT Manufacturers. In doing so, Shelby would not only restore American racing prestige, but bring his greatest creation to world attention: the iconic Cobra.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

Together with the Carroll Shelby Company, Baume & Mercier is proud to honor Carroll’s legend with limited edition Capeland timepieces that capture his most enduring triumph. Inspired by the vintage 1948 mono-push-piece chronograph in the Baume & Mercier museum, our Capeland Shelby® Cobra is distinguished by its retro accents, classic lines, chronograph and tachymeter functions, polished and satin finished case and specially crafted hands featuring the Cobra logo. It is unparalleled elegance injected with pure snake venom.

This is where the story begins.

Driven to Succeed

Before Carroll Hall Shelby achieved fame as a team manager and manufacturer, he first gained iconic status as one of the most celebrated American race drivers of the 1950s. Sixteen U.S. and international speed records fell to him in 1954. Sports Illustrated named him Driver of the Year in 1956, and again in 1957. In the 1959 season, Shelby reached the pinnacle of motor sport, racing to victory for Aston Martin at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

What Shelby couldn’t outrun was a health issue that followed him since childhood. A heart condition was taking its toll, and in February 1960 — at the age of 37 — he was diagnosed with angina pectoralis. After deciding to end his racing career at the end of the 1960 season, Shelby began thinking about what his next challenge would be, outside the cockpit. He found it in a quest to change the definition of the American sports car.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

For years, Shelby quietly nurtured the idea that a faster, lighter and more nimble car would not only outperform European competitors, but offer build costs low enough to make it affordable to a wider audience. With funds from a new driving school in the California desert, Shelby first imported the British AC, eventually fitting a 289 cubic inch Ford V8 together with handling improvements. Yet this was only the foundation for his ultimate aim: an all-American street and track car. Its name appeared to Shelby one night in a dream, and he roused long enough to scribble it on a bedside notepad.

When he awoke the next morning, he saw the name and knew it was right. Cobra.

Shelby American manufacture

As the driving force behind our collection, Baume & Mercier is proud to celebrate all facets of Carroll Shelby’s achievements, including his vision and entrepreneurship.

Founded as a family business in 1830, Baume & Mercier’s reputation for exceptional design, lasting performance and cutting-edge innovation is a mirror to Shelby’s own ethos. The brand has also been recognized with ten Grand Prix watchmaking awards, and seven gold medals at international exhibitions. This includes the famous Kew Observatory precision record of 1892, awarded to a Baume & Mercier watch so accurate that it was unmatched for a decade.

The Cobra Strikes

By the 1963 season, the Cobra and its 289 engine were dominating the US domestic race series, going on to only lose one race in its first three years of competition. Each proved to be a testing ground for Shelby and his team as they sought to extract maximum power and performance from their machine. Momentum was building for a run at the ultimate prize: the FIA International GT Championship. Among the keys to success would be a larger engine, capable of out running Europe’s best.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

FIA rules ordered manufacturers to create at least 100 production models of each car entered. With that in mind, Shelby set to work testing a 390 cubic inch engine, but it wasn’t enough. With little time before the 1965 FIA season, a decision was reached to create an entirely new Cobra.

To make it happen, Shelby recruited Ford to the effort, cementing a partnership that would result in Shelby taking over Ford’s entire GT racing program — and an invitation to convert the Mustang to a Shelby GT350 B-production road racer.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

With a massive 427 cubic inch Ford V8 at its heart, the new Shelby Cobra would be the most feared muscle car ever built. Capable of 500 hp, the engine was so heavy that a full chassis redesign was needed, featuring a tubular coil spring design five inches wider for improved handling.

Coil springs were installed all around, and the body was streamlined with flared arches that allowed for larger tires and a wider track. In every aspect, the 427 wasn’t just a leap forward for Cobra. It marked a new chapter for the American sports car, with handling, braking and raw power beyond compare.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

Baume & Mercier is proud to pay tribute to the 427 Cobra in every detail of our Capeland Shelby® Cobra chronographs. Their generous case is designed to mirror the flared style of the Cobra’s own aerodynamic body lines, while blue dials and transparent white stripes take their cue from the Cobra’s famous racing livery, every accent chosen to express an elegant power. It is the ultimate expression of performance, born from the DNA of Shelby’s most revered creation.

Destined for Victory
Throughout racing history, there are wins that have changed a country, manufacturer or team. A precious few also change the entire sport. One such event is the triumph of Carroll Shelby in the 1965 FIA season. Together with a hand-chosen team of drivers and crew, Shelby entered GT competition with one goal: fulfill his dream of conquering Europe’s best with lighter, faster cars, and bring home America’s first international trophy in nearly 40 years.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

The road to glory required Shelby to earn the best seven performances in 13 out of 20 races, with points only awarded for first through sixth places. In the opening race at Daytona, Shelby stormed to 1st place, and followed it with a 1st place finish at the next race, held at Sebring. From there, the battle was ferociously joined by Ferrari, who had won the GT championship every year since its founding, and held the FIA Manufacturers championship for ten of the past 12 years.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

Now the world watched with awe as the Shelby team fought to stay ahead, with 1st place finishes at tracks such as Monza, Le Mans, Nurburgring and Reims. Each race saw man and machine pushed to the limit, in a battle for supremacy more extreme that anyone imagined. In total, Shelby finished first in 11 out of 20 races, including at the final race at Bridgehampton. By that point, history had already been made. Shelby American was crowned FIA GT champion. Carroll Shelby became the first individual to win as a driver, team manager and manufacturer. A feat never repeated in the annals of motorsport.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...           BIG FOTO

To honor this unprecedented milestone, Baume & Mercier has created extraordinary timepieces for the Capeland Shelby® Cobra collection, each produced as a true limited edition. In recognition of Shelby’s FIA World Championship 50th anniversary, the steel chronograph is limited to a quantity of 1,965 pieces, while the 18K red gold model is limited to just 98 pieces, in tribute to Carroll Shelby’s own Cobra racing number.

Passion to Perform

Each timepiece in the Capeland Shelby® Cobra collection is designed to capture the spirit and power of Cobra with true grace.
A generous case, available in polished and satin-finished stainless steel or 18K red gold, creates a signature frame for a face rich with detail and personality. This begins with a homage to Cobra’s famous livery, combining its classic Guardsman Blue racing color with transparent dual racing stripes as elegant as they are historic.

Alain Zimmermann and Neil Cumming - Shelby Cobra Event

At the center of the design is the iconic Cobra logo, which is forged into the seconds hand to communicate a sense of constant motion, while both hours and minutes hands are created in the shape of the Cobra’s graceful steering wheel. Completing the presentation is a sapphire crystal case back, engraved with the collection title and Carroll Shelby’s own signature.

Marrying Shelby’s reputation for exceptional performance to that of Baume & Mercier, each chronograph is assembled to our most exacting requirements. Quality and precision are of the highest standard, with automatic movement to provide effortless accuracy. It is a limited edition collection far above the expected: destined to be cherished and displayed with pride for generations. Exclusively created for those with a passion for performance and detail as uncompromising as that of Carroll Shelby himself.

A Moment to Savor

Capeland Shelby® Cobra Steel Chronograph 1,965-Piece Limited Edition

The strap also pays a quiet homage, with genuine black alligator offset by a 18K red gold buckle, Cobra blue round-scale alligator lining and red stitching. On the reverse side, a sapphire crystal is framed by an 18K gold case back, with an engraving of the collection title and personal signature of Carroll Shelby.
All watches in the Capeland Shelby® Cobra collection arrive in special packaging with an exclusive miniature of the 427 Cobra, in addition to a custom brochure and card. Owners of the 18K red gold flyback chronograph will also receive a book detailing the full history of the Cobra.

Once in a Lifetime

During a hospital stay for his heart condition, Carroll Shelby visited with children suffering from a range of similar ailments, including those waiting for heart transplants. The experience was so moving that Carroll became passionate about using his fame and goodwill to support them. The result was the Carroll Shelby Foundation, which raises funds to assist the families of children with major heart ailments. It has since grown to also provide scholarships and educational opportunities to disadvantaged youth across the United States.

Baume & Mercier is honored to support the work of the Carroll Shelby Foundation via a corporate donation, and by creating a truly unique timepiece for auction. Only one watch of this type will ever be produced by Baume & Mercier, making it a collector’s item beyond compare. The winning bidder will also receive an original Cobra painting signed by surviving members of the 1965 Cobra team, and a personal item once owned by Carroll Shelby. We wish those generous enough to bid every success, and look forward to their outstanding contribution to the Carroll Shelby Foundation.
