This spectacular creation offers a new interpretation of the formal purity of the octagon. The eight-sided geometrical figure, conveying a wealth of cultural and spiritual symbolism, has been regarded as a source of perfection since time immemorial, both in Antiquity and during the Renaissance. In the wake of various formal variations on the Octo theme, it reinvents itself in 2017 with this new case distinguished by its modern, urban proportions

The new case, unveiled with the Octo Roma line, is naturally inspired by the motifs adorning the Basilica of Maxentius. The Roman roots of Bulgari, a jewellery Maison endowed with skills admired for more than 130 years, cannot be concealed. As always at Bulgari, there is no question of separating form and substance. The exercise of modelling shapes and seeking ideal equilibrium in design are not undertaken for their own sake, but always as a means of matching functionality. An original and spectacular architecture

With its transparent case-back and dial, this spectacular 44mm-diameter timepiece made of titanium with a black Diamond Like Carbon (D.L.C.) treatment, offers enthusiasts a full visual immersion into its inner workings. The mechanical manual-winding flying tourbillon movement, Caliber BVL 206, appears at the heart of the watch with 11 black DLC-coated bridges adorned with green bars of ITR2 – a single composite material laden with carbon nanotube particles and a hardness comparable to a metal - and SLN, a high-tech luminescent material enabling the watch to give off at night all the light it has received during the daytime.

The bridges forming the hour-markers are an entirely original feature. They therefore serve to bear and hold the movement in place, while also acting as functional elements for reading off the hours and minutes, as well as decorative features contributing to the singular identity of the watch. In addition, the Octo Tourbillon Sapphire incorporates a clever development relating to its time-setting operations: pressing the crown displays a red dot in a tiny aperture at 3 o’clock, thereby signalling that the time may be set by simply turning the crown. Once the operation is complete, another press causes the dot to vanish and locks the time-setting mechanism.

The symbol of Myron’s Discobolus (Discus Thrower) sets the tone for Diagono watches. The Discus Thrower is the best-known work by Myron of Eleutherae, a Greek sculptor who worked exclusively in bronze and hailed from the region of Attica. He earned a major place in the history of art and he became famed for both his inventiveness and his boldness, of which the Discobolus provides an eloquent demonstration.

Bulgari Diagono was one of the very first watches to use materials such as aluminium. That was back in 1998 and caused a sensation on the international watchmaking scene, as well as a major upheaval in the design world. Many celebrities adopted it and pop star Sting would never perform on stage without his Diagono watch on his wrist. An airliner regularly criss-crossed the globe flying the Bulgari colours and bearing the effigy of the Diagono watch.

Its rigidity and its dimensional stability enable it to withstand high-temperature, hostile environments. It is both easy to treat and particularly light compared with steel, aluminium and titanium. The properties of this polymer are partially similar to those of the ceramic from which the bezel of the Diagono Magnesium is made: lightness, extreme wear resistance and imperviousness to scratching.

It both clothes and protects the competition-ready mechanics of the finest sports cars. It is however not a purely ornamental or decorative element, but instead a technical component capable of withstanding extreme temperatures or variations in the expansion of materials. Moreover, Motorlac also creates a surprising granulated texture and colourful new reflective effects. Everything starts with a sketch, a drawing that commits the chosen theme, the story to be told, to paper. That of the Maison BVLGARI has been in the writing for more than 130 years. In step with its boundless creativity, themes dear to the jeweller have been transformed into endearing points of reference that are powerful reminders of its identity. A rich and fascinating universe that finds a new expression at the heart of a collection of complicated watches. I GIARDINI DI BVLGARI feature the emblematic motifs of the Naturalia collection, produced using the techniques of champleve, miniature painting, mother-of-pearl – or stone – marquetry and gemsetting. This year the jeweller unveils IL GIARDINO NOTTURNO. A garden in which the night sky reveals a stylised (Belle de Nuit) Beauty of the Night or Marvel of Peru, also known as a moonflower, which was already used in mother-of-pearl marquetry to decorate a piece of BVLGARI jewellery in the 1970s. A dial whose complexity expresses the different elements of which the decor of each of these three versions consists. A dial architecture built on four levels and evoking the four elements.

FIRE: BVLGARI reveals the fascinating character and spangled look of aventurine glass, an art dating back to the 17th century. This intense blue material, dotted with copper inclusions, is studded with eight diamond stars.

EARTH: The moonflowers are engraved using the champleve technique, gemset, polished and rhodium-plated. The marquetry specialist then sets white and Tahitian mother-of-pearl inserts into the heart of engraved petals.

AIR: The movement with its moon phase consists of an aventurine disc adorned with two engraved and polished gold moons.

WATER: The waves are engraved in mother-of-pearl. To obtain the required shades of blue, black varnish is applied under white mother-of-pearl. It is the subsequent different thicknesses of mother-of-pearl that cause the variations in the intensity of the blue. The mother-of-pearl is polished to give it maximum shine.

This original mechanism, a metaphor inspired by the flight of the butterfly, is unique in the world of Haute Horlogerie and bears two independent, retractable, diamond-shaped hands on a supporting disc. Each one alternately sweeps over a graduated minutes scale spread over a 180-degree half circle.

The minutes are successively indicated by each of the two hands. The first is positioned on the segment and thus signals the progression of the minutes, while the second one remains ‘off-duty’ in retracted position and thus invisible throughout the rotation of the disc bearing them.

When the first hand reaches the 55th minute on the display segment, the other hand progressively completes a quarter turn to move into a position parallel to the first one on the 00 minutes marker.

The first hand then moves into its retracted position for the following 55 minutes.  In the case of the simplest display of time, the Bulgari Papillon Heure Sautante watch displays the jumping hour, indicates the minutes via the “Papillon” device, and shows the seconds by the central hand.

The entire mechanism is powered by a mechanical self-winding Manufacture movement, Calibre BVL 252, entirely designed and assembled in line with the finest traditions by master watchmakers from Bulgari Manufacture.

It beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a 42-hour power reserve. This movement is decorated with great care and elegance expressed through alternate circular graining and the Côtes de Genève motif.
