MING x J.N. Shapiro – 37.06 Lightning Edition

MING Watches x J.N. Shapiro37.06 Lightning Guilloché 38mm Steel Edition 2026

A collaboration between friends, featuring a handmade guilloché dial by J.N. Shapiro, heat-colored by Ming Thein so that no two are exactly alike.

The MING × J.N. Shapiro 37.06 Lightning is a joint project between Horologer MING and J.N. Shapiro, two founding members of the Alternative Horological Alliance (AHA), and the product of a long-running friendship between Ming Thein and Josh Shapiro.

The two brands have previously worked together on the AHA tantalum bracelet and the cases for the MING Project 21, but the 37.06 Lightning is their first watch presented together.

It began with a shared desire to create something together, and a simple question: What happens when two independent makers bring their own forms of handwork to the same dial?

The answer begins in Los Angeles, inside Josh Shapiro’s workshop. Every Lightning dial is crafted from grade-2 titanium and individually engine-turned by hand on a traditional roseengine lathe using a pattern called “Lightning guilloché.”

This marks the first time a wristwatch by Josh Shapiro has used this specific pattern, creating a hypnotic texture that gives the surface a sense of dynamism that feels right at home in a MING. The material and pattern both demand precision, and the guilloché process carries a high failure rate. It is slow, precise, tactile work, and it sets the stage for everything that follows.

From California, the dials travel to Kuala Lumpur, where Ming Thein heat-colors each dial with a handheld butane torch. The process transforms the dial into a polychromatic field of deep blue, rich purple, and vibrant orange-yellow. The unique coloration does not depend on paint, lacquer, or any additional surface coating – only heat, timing, restraint, and creative license.

There is very little room for error when heating the dials. Just a few seconds too long or too short with the torch can create uneven color distribution and ruin the dial entirely. Even with perfect control of the torch, the guilloché process can expose variations in the titanium’s crystalline structure that compromise the final result.

The failure rate is high, with only about one in every three dials making it into a finished watch. The dials that make the cut are never exactly alike, with each final color gradient unique to that particular dial. Lightning, after all, never strikes twice.

This synergistic process makes the 37.06 Lightning more personal than the typical watch collaboration. Josh Shapiro and his team engine-turn every dial by hand, and Ming Thein personally heat-colors each one by hand *. They both leave their creative fingerprints on the Lightning’s most visible element.

After a brief attempt to make heat treatment a team effort, it was determined that the rest of Team MING could not be left unsupervised with a butane torch.

The dial is housed in MING’s familiar 37-series case, crafted here from 316L stainless steel. Measuring 38mm in diameter, 10.9mm in thickness, and 44.5mm lug-to-lug, the case is designed to maximize dial presence while preserving real-world wearability. Its narrow bezel allows the Lightning to wear visually larger and thinner than the dimensions suggest, while the sculpted lug profile requires multi-axis machining to flow cleanly from the case flanks into the lugs.

The 37.06 Lightning is topped by a domed sapphire crystal with laser-hollowed cavities filled with luminous HyCeram, which serve as indices. The hour and minute hands receive multiple applications of Super-LumiNova X1 for a more even, longer-lasting glow. The nonluminous portions of each hand are anodized blue to complement the heat-colored dial beneath. There is no seconds hand, keeping the timekeeping display focused and uninterrupted.

Inside is the manual-wind Sellita for MING calibre SW210.M1, a MING-exclusive execution with skeletonized, rhodium-plated bridges and an anthracite-coated baseplate. The power reserve is approximately 42 hours. The watch is sealed with domed sapphire crystals on the front and back, both with double-sided anti-reflective coating, and offers 100 meters of water resistance.

Pricing & Availability

The production for the MING × J.N. Shapiro 37.06 Lightning is constrained by craftsmanship, as each dial must first be engine-turned by J.N. Shapiro in Los Angeles and then individually heat-colored by Ming Thein in Kuala Lumpur.

The 37.06 Lightning is priced at CHF 6,250. A limited initial stock will be available immediately when orders open on Friday, 5 June, at 1:00 PM GMT.  From July 2026 onward, MING and J.N. Shapiro aim to produce approximately 10 examples per month. Watches will be available through www.ming.watch and MING’s authorized retail partners.

The 37.06 Lightning will be displayed publicly at upcoming MING events in Los Angeles, Taiwan, Chicago, and Geneva.

About J.N. Shapiro Watches

My name is Joshua Shapiro, and I am  the founder and CEO of the eponymous brand J.N. Shapiro Watches. I am also an educator with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in U.S History.  I  began by making traditional engine-turned dials for other watchmakers. In 2018, I  launched the Infinity Series, which featured highly complex, engine-turned dials with traditional and exotic materials. Soon after, in December of 2021, we produced the first tantalum wrist watch cases made outside of Switzerland for the Infinity Series.

The Resurgence is the latest of our creations, a fully U.S. made watch in development for over four years. It is a culmination of a dream that began from the humblest of starts. Our watches are meant to inspire individuals to pursue perfection, to enjoy both the journey and the destination.

MING Watches – 57.04 Phoenix Edition

MING Watches57.04 Phoenix Monopusher Chronograph Steel Limited Edition 2026

MING 57.04 Phoenix
Arise again, Sir Monopusher

The Iris – MING's first 57.04 – marked the start of the 5th generation with a colourful bang. It quickly became clear that 100 watches weren’t enough, and fortuitously we were already working on the follow-up.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

After all, monopusher chronographs have become something of a core pillar for MING, and it was time we added one to our core collection.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

We bid the MING 57.04 Phoenix welcome. This version of the 57.04 is a little more restrained than its flamboyant peacock of a cousin but still shows its colours underneath the deeply dished grey dial – radial cutouts offer a window to a baseplate treated with the same colour shifting multiphasic coating seen on the Iris.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The watch has what we think of as tonal structure: mostly monochromatic, whilst remaining very three-dimensional, quite graphic and with pops of colours peeking through.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial is a study in texture and shadow, complete with curved sculpting, negative relief elements and a lot of depth.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Even the subdial has been redesigned to enhance this feeling, and as is our signature – everything carries luminous material, in both MING Polar White and Super-LumiNova X1.

The Phoenix is a destro monopusher chronograph with the crown and single button on the left side. It shares the uniquely configured Sellita for MING Cal. SW562.M1 now with a sculpted anthracite three-quarter plate to better match the dial side.

The movement offers ~60 hours of power reserve at full wind and a nice large crown for a tactile winding experience.

The 40mm stainless steel case is intricately detailed and a sculpturally modern take on Art Deco.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It showcases our experience with complex, unconventional case construction especially in the multi-piece stepped lugs that allow for crisp definition and alternating brushed-polished finishing on adjacent surfaces which would be otherwise impossible.

No fewer than 9 separate pieces are required for the lugs alone. Despite the complexity and crown pusher, it remains water resistant to 100m, making for an ideal daily companion.

MING Watches – 57.04 Iris Monopusher Chronograph Edition

MING Watches58.04 IRIS Monopusher Chronograph Titanium Limited Edition 2025

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Stepping into the fifth generation

August 2025 marks MING's 8th birthday: over 15,000 watches delivered, more than 8,000 collectors and friends, 75+ references, 3 design languages, 2 GPHG awards and a single, seemingly impossible dream.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Our new MING 57.04 Iris is an appropriately significant and landmark watch for the occasion: it debuts our 5th-generation design language, a creative evolution that has been in development for several years now, and is our first ever destro.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Our first generation was experimental – finding our feet and figuring out what our design codes would be. The second generation – maximalist, elaborate, ornate, and with hollow flying blade lugs.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

The third generation shifted towards monobloc simplicity and minimalism with touches of ribbon surfacing. The fourth generation does not exist as a nod towards Asian superstitions – it was designed and consigned to stillbirth.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Our fifth generation is defined by a modern take on Art Deco: tightly sculptural with plenty of visual presence and restrained ornamentation. It is bold and unapologetic.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

It showcases our experience with complex, unconventional case construction and takes it to another level with our new stepped lugs that retain our signature flare, have 9 separate pieces to achieve a unique nested effect with crisply defined and differentiated finishing on each surface.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Look closely, and you’ll see the tops are polished, the sides satin brushed. This is not a watch that goes quietly into the good night.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

The Iris’ stainless steel case is, by popular request, a larger 40mm size but remains carefully proportioned to be comfortable for all wrist sizes with a lug-to-lug distance of just 47.8mm. It has strong visual presence thanks to the alternating polished and brushed facets.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

The visual presence extends into the night thanks to the laser cut and MING Polar White filled indices in the top crystal. With a 100m water resistance, it remains practical and well suited to daily wear.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

We chose our favourite complication for the 57-series debut: the monopusher chronograph. Since 2017, Ming Thein (MT) has wanted to make an accessibly priced chronograph but was limited by movement choice and case architecture. The 57-series case answered the latter, and our partnership with Sellita the former.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Together with Sellita, we developed a unique configuration and movement finish in the Sellita for MING Cal. SW562.M1. It is a destro with hand winding, central seconds, and a 30-minutes counter at 6 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

The destro configuration means MT could specify a large, tactile crown and pusher without concern for interference with the wearer’s wrist.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

It is topped off with a uniquely sculptural 4N coated three-quarter plate that contrasts beautifully with the rest of the anthracite movement.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

The watch really earns its name on the dial side: it isn’t just the deeply dished and fluted dial that you notice first, nor is it the floating indices, or the uniquely shaped chronograph minute counter disc that has sandwich style construction overflowing with luminous material.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

It’s the colour of the dial itself that is impossible to define because it’s in a constantly shifting dynamic state between turquoise and purple and all the transitionary shades of blue in between.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

The effect is achieved with a multiphasic coating over a machined brass base. We call it ‘Iris’ because of its curvilinear radial pattern and the depth, intensity and dynamism of its colur.
