During the D1 Spacelab mission in 1985, physicist and astronaut Reinhard Furrer wore a Sinn 140 S equipped with the Lemania 5100 movement on his wrist. Under real mission conditions, it demonstrated that a self-winding mechanical chronograph functions reliably even in zero gravity. To this day, the 140 model series remains one of the most historically significant collections in the history of Sinn.

With the 140 A S Anniversary, the Frankfurt-based manufacture continues the technical evolution of this legendary chronograph. At its heart is the Sinn Chronograph Movement SZ01. The defining feature of this proprietary development is the centre-mounted 60-minute stopwatch hand with a jumping minute indication. This design enables particularly fast and unambiguous reading of recorded times, complemented by the minute scale extending around the full diameter of the dial. Both the minute and second stopwatch hands are coated with luminescent colour to ensure optimum readability.

The 140 A S Anniversary also stands out through its distinctive case finish. The combination of polished and satinised surfaces gives the watch a refined appearance while underscoring the exclusive character of this anniversary model. Thanks to TEGIMENT Technology, the case is especially scratch-resistant. The push-pieces and crown are equipped with the D3-System, while Ar-Dehumidifying Technology enhances functional reliability and freedom from fogging. Water-resistant and pressure-resistant to 10 bar, as well as resistant to low pressure, the watch offers a comprehensive package of technical performance.

The 140 A S Anniversary combines historical authenticity with technical advancement, resulting in a technically sophisticated chronograph with unmistakable heritage and a clear instrument-watch character.
The Fascination of Space Travel: The 140 Model Series
When the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off on 30 October 1985 for mission STS-61-A, it marked the beginning of a new chapter in European spaceflight history. In its payload bay was Spacelab, a space laboratory developed by European engineers that enabled scientists to conduct research under zero-gravity conditions over an extended period for the first time.
With the German Spacelab mission D1, Europe established itself as a major partner in human spaceflight. During the eight-day mission, the astronauts carried out around 100 experiments in the fields of physics, materials science, medicine, and biology.

Among the crew were the German astronaut scientists Prof. Dr. Reinhard Furrer and Prof. Dr. Ernst Messerschmid. Throughout the mission, Reinhard Furrer wore his personal Sinn 140 S Chronograph. Although the watch was not part of any official test programme, its performance gave rise to a success story that remains unique to this day.

Under actual mission conditions in space, it demonstrated that a self-winding mechanical chronograph continues to wind itself reliably solely through the movements of its wearer and performs flawlessly even in zero gravity. This practical proof secured the 140 model series a permanent place in both the history of Sinn and the history of space exploration.

This successful mission was not an isolated event. In 1992, a Sinn 142 S Chronograph accompanied German astronaut Klaus-Dietrich Flade during the Mir-92 mission aboard the russian space station MIR. Just one year later, the model series once again proved its capabilities during the second German Spacelab mission, D2. On board the Space Shuttle Columbia, the 142 S travelled approximately 6.7 million kilometres and completed 160 orbits of the Earth during the ten-day mission.

The participation in these landmark missions established the exceptional reputation of the 140 model series and its successors. To this day, these timepieces stand for technical precision, uncompromising functionality, and the commitment to ensuring that self-winding instrument watches perform reliably even under the most extreme operating conditions. With the 140 A S Anniversary, Sinn builds on this extraordinary heritage, combining historical authenticity with consistent technical advancement.
