GIRARD-PERREGAUX – Laureato CARBON GLASS Chronograph

GIRARD-PERREGAUXLaureato CARBON GLASS Chronograph 44mm Concept 2019

Girard-Perregaux presents Carbon Glass
a revolutionary new material in the world of high watchmaking

A worldwide first. True to its tradition of innovation
combining aesthetics and functionality,
Girard-Perregaux introduces a Carbon of exceptionally regular and homogeneous finish.

100 times stiffer than steel, the material’s unique properties

also make it airtight without a container.
Integrating pigmented glass fibres, here in blue,

the material is vibrantly alive, seeming in motion.

With the “Earth to Sky” theme, Girard-Perregaux looks to infinity, the interplay of light and shadow, and the mysteries in-between. In this new approach, the brand opens a dialogue between the earth and the sky, between matter and space. And shows the science of timepiece finishing that is its hallmark from a new vantage point.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Vibrant, sophisticated and with a distinctive hue, CARBON GLASS is a new type of carbon that is also uniquely impermeable, resistant and lightweight. The product of extensive research, CARBON GLASS was born of the determination to create a material at the cutting edge of innovation. Demonstrating extreme stiffness, presented here with touches of blue, and anchored in this year’s “Earth to Sky” theme, this aesthetic and technical achievement is a tribute to excellence.

High performance at the heart of CARBON GLASS development

The material’s patented manufacturing process hinges on extreme compression at high-temperature injection. The result is a block of matter in simplified form to optimise homogeneity (regular partitions). The singular texture with a visual vibrancy is achieved by integrating the glass fibres associated to the carbon. The net effect: each finish is unique, and thus each timepiece has a character all its own.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The major innovation with this technique resides in the perfect seal achieved through the material’s impermeability: no other carbon manufacturing technique matches this level of airtightness without a container. Here, the compression of the material – which has an extremely regular and homogenous structure – leads to a high density which in turn ensures a perfect seal.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

From an aesthetic perspective, the result is, contrary to other carbon applications, a smooth and uniform surface on all sides. Here, the colour is defined by using blue glass fibre, but other hues are possible as well, and even other substances such as gold may be substituted.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The other innovation is the tremendous stiffness, here, too, in all three dimensions – which other types of carbon don’t reach. CARBON GLASS is stiffer than steel by a factor of 100. Moreover, it serves purposes that reach beyond pure packaging aesthetics: with a density close to 1, it practically floats in water (the density of steel is approximately 8 and that of titanium 4.5).

On the occasion of the SIHH 2019, this new material is being unveiled – as an exclusive preview – in the form of the new Laureato Absolute Chronograph.

A sporty and sophisticated Kalpa

An iconic Parmigiani Fleurier timepiece since its creation in 2001, the Kalpa is once again set to take centre stage in 2019 with the launch of a new and daring men's model in titanium. The Kalpagraphe Chronomètre Titanium features an integrated chronograph which fits seamlessly within the contours of its case.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It offers this promise of harmony – of substance and form; of the case and its movement – as on all the new Kalpa timepieces. What it also offers is this touch of ultra-modern sportiness seen on these truly distinctive timepieces.

THE INTEGRATED CHRONOGRAPH

The integrated chronograph – unlike the modular kind – is a complication which few manufactures in the world have mastered on an industrial scale. In 2018, Parmigiani Fleurier presented a shaped integrated chronograph – the PF362 – which currently drives the new Kalpagraphe Chronomètre Titanium.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The PF362 calibre is a COSC-certified, self-winding, integrated chronograph, whose functions include hours, minutes, small seconds, chronograph and date, and which offers a 65-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Entirely developed and manufactured in-house over a period of six years, this calibre works at a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz) and demonstrates an accuracy of one tenth of a second; it also features a column wheel and vertical clutch to ensure accuracy and user comfort.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In addition, its variable-inertia balance is secured by a bridge which provides strength and stability against shocks. Seamlessly integrated with the hand-polished 48.2 x 40.4 mm tonneau case, and water-resistant to 30 metres, this advanced mechanism reveals, through the sapphire case-back, the elegant finish and the platinum oscillating weight with its barley grain guilloché motif.

AESTHETIC CHOICE

The titanium case and bold open-worked dial give the timepiece a daring and sporty look.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The case features a micro-blasted finish, a technique which consists of blasting minuscule glass beads against the material to mattify the surface. The black and slate-coloured dial is laser-cut and delicately open-worked with a design which evokes a car radiator grille which reveals the tonneau-shaped movement underneath.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The display is completed with two snailed counters, a semi-instantaneous date window and a small seconds sector with its own hand.

The luminescent Delta-shaped hands, the counters placed slightly off-centre, and the rounded date indicator containing three numerals come together to form this balanced, easily readable display. As a finishing touch, the timepiece features a rubber strap, in keeping with its modern style, with a titanium folding buckle.

Bell & Ross – BR 03-92 Bi-Compass Ceramic Edition

Bell & Ross AVIATION BR 03-92 Bi-Compass Ceramic 42mm Limited Edition

FROM THE COCKPIT TO THE WRIST

Bell & Ross demonstrates, once again, its remarkable creativity and pioneering mentality, while underlining its functional and utilitarian brand values.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In a quest to create the ideal utilitarian watch, Bell & Ross broke traditional watchmaking codes in 2005 with the simple idea of turning a plane’s cockpit into a wristwatch. More than an original concept, the Instruments collection is not only reminiscent of the world of aviation but is immediately recognizable.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

PIONEERING DISPLAY
& AERONAUTICAL INSTRUMENTATION

Pushing further its exploration of aeronautical navigation in-struments, Bell & Ross has since developed other unique and high-tech models such as the BR01 RADAR, BR01 ALTIMETER and the BR01 CLIMB to name a few. The result was a collection of exclusive watches with innovative displays.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

True to its philosophy, Bell & Ross introduces a new version inspired by analog instrumentation of aircraft cockpits, where each instrument is a reference point in terms of precision, leg-ibility, reliability and performance:

the BR03-92 BI-COMPASS. With this watch, Bell & Ross recreates the graphic style of these navigation tools as closely as possible, offering an alternative to the traditional approach of telling the time.

DESIGN THAT ENHANCES LEGIBILITY

Bell & Ross
designers have borrowed the graphic characteristics of navigation tools to create an original and extremely legible display of time. The result is a design and color code that allows the time to be read quickly and accurately.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The simplicity of the BR03-92 BI-COMPASS’s design encases the complexity of its inner workings. Built on a two-tier basis, the dial divides its main center part with the outer part - where the minute track is featured - through a small “step” equipped with a minute-circle.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To enhance legibility, the hour and minute graduations have been separated to promote the minutes on the main dial – as in original instruments – while the hours are displayed in the center.
Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The hour reading is indicated by a green triangle marker which appears in the center through an independent concentric disc which is not graduated.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The technical challenge posed by its design and construction required the best watchmaking expertise: An ultra-light disc needed to be created to ensure that the power reserve nor the accuracy of the watch was not reduced. Fur-thermore, the disc needs to be sufficiently resistant so as to not become deformed or risk any friction.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This dual challenge has required the development of specific materials and new techniques.

As it rotates, an adjustment to the nearest micron ensures that the disc is constantly parallel. The accuracy of the assembly requires all the know-how of master watchmakers.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The typography used for the numerals is identical to that on analog aviation counters (Isonorm)

2 COLORS SERVING UTILITY

The use of color is important in aviation for the coding of signals, hence the need to set adequate color requirements to ensure that flight crew can recognize information at a glance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

BLUE-GREEN: The Munsell green hue indicates the hours and is covered in a photoluminescent coating (Superluminova®) that contrasts with the black of the dial, ensuring they can be easily read both during the day and at night

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

OFF-WHITE: The “coquille d’oeuf” hands and numerals on the dial unveil the minutes and seconds and echoes the legibility principles of pro-fessional aeronautical instruments. This color scheme was com-monly used on instruments, specifically on US Navy aircrafts.

The anti-glare, black matte ceramic finish of the case is inspired by the color of an instrumentation panel, designed to make the dial easier to read by eliminating glare.

The new BR03-92 BI-COMPASS will make its owner feel as though they own a fragment of an aircraft’s cockpit, delighting both aviation fans and watch collectors.

PANERAI – PAM00799 Submersible BMG-TECH™

OFFICINE PANERAIPAM00799 Submersible BMG-TECH™ - 47mm Automatic

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The pioneering spirit of Panerai

Two of the most innovative Panerai materials in one watch: BMG-TECH™ case and Carbotech™ bezel to ensure extreme strength, scratch resistance and lightness. Moreover, the uneven, matt black appearance of the Carbotech™, which varies according the cutting of the material, ensures that each watch is unique.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

With its case made entirely of BMG-TECH ™ and the unidirectional rotating bezel in carbotech, the new Submersible BMG-TECH ™ is not only a professional diving watch with excellent technical characteristics but an outstanding example of the innovative abilities of the Panerai Laboratorio di Idee.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The brush-finished 47 mm case is made of BMG-TECH ™, a bulk metallic glass, that is, a material obtained from a particular glass-like alloy by a process which prevents a substantial crystallisation. The alloy (consisting of zirconium, copper, aluminium, titanium and nickel) is subjected to high pressure injection at a high temperature and then cooled for just a few seconds, so that the atoms do not have enough time to assume a regular, orderly structure, as normally happens in crystals.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This “chaotic” structure of the material is the secret of its properties: greater strength combined with greater resistance to corrosion, external shocks, and magnetic fields. The BMG-TECH ™ case is enhanced by the bezel made of carbotech, a material based on carbon fibre which combines toughness and exceptional lightness with great character from an aesthetic point of view.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In fact, carbotech makes each example of the new Panerai Submersible BMG-TECH™ unique, since the striations of carbotech’s carbon fibres are different in every watch. The unidirectional rotating bezel enables the times of immersion to be calculated with confidence, while legibility in the dark is ensured by Super-LumiNova® coating applied to the markers and the large skeleton hands. The rubber strap fitted to the watch is perfect for diving and very tough.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The clear indications on the dial of the Panerai Submersible BMG-TECH™ make it extremely easy to read, with excellent visibility under all lighting conditions and in complete darkness, thanks to the use of two different types of Super-LumiNova ® on the markers, making the reference points needed to read the time and the duration of a dive easy to identify. With its prominent small seconds dial and date window, the dial is polished black and it is coordinated with the rubber strap, perfect for the dives for which the Panerai Submersible BMG-TECH™ – water-resistant to 300 metres (30 bar) – is an ideal instrument.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The movement of the Panerai Submersible BMG-TECH ™, entirely developed and made in Panerai’s high-end watchmaking Manufacture, is the P.9010 automatic calibre, with a power reserve of three days. Consisting of 200 components and 31 jewels, the calibre has a diameter of 13¾ lignes and a thickness of 6 mm, enabling the thickness of the case itself to be minimised.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The balance, fixed by a bridge with twin supports, oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and it is connected to a stopping device which is activated when the winding crown is pulled out, enabling the watch to be synchronised with a reference signal. Also, the hours can be adjusted without interfering with the running of the minute hand, thanks to the device which moves the hour hand independently forwards or backwards in one-hour jumps. This function is very useful when changing time zones or moving between summer time and winter time, and conveniently the adjustment of the hour hand is automatically connected to the date indicator.

IWC – PILOT’s Watch TOP GUN - 2019

IWC SchaffhausenPILOT’s Watch TOP GUN Line - 2019

2019 IWC INTRODUCES
A NEW TOP GUN LINE
WITH INNOVATIVE CASE MATERIALS

Schaffhausen, January 2019 – at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva, IWC Schaffhausen will be unveiling a new TOP GUN line in the Pilot’s Watches collection. The Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph TOP GUN Ceratanium is the first pilot's watch from IWC with a Ceratanium® case. The material developed by IWC is as lightweight and robust as titanium and at the same time as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. IWC will also be presenting the first watch case made from sand-coloured ceramic.

The TOP GUN watches, which IWC has been producing since 2007, take their name from the Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program in the U.S. Navy. This training programme provides the best Navy pilots with flying and tactical training. Naval aviation requires incredible skill. When manoeuvring in tight curves, for example, both the pilots and the aircraft are subjected to maximum acceleration forces. Spending months at a time on an aircraft carrier also takes its toll on personnel and material.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The TOP GUN watches are therefore specially designed with robust materials, such as ceramic and titanium, to meet the specific requirements of elite jet pilots. The matte black ceramic case, for example, ensures that pilots are not distracted by sunlight reflecting off their watches during the flight. The hard and scratch resistant ceramic is perfectly suited to daily use in a confined aircraft cockpit and can also withstand extreme G-forces. Ceramic and titanium are also extremely corrosion-resistant and can withstand humid, salty sea air.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

"In the new TOP GUN line, we are using Ceratanium® for a pilot's watch for the first time. This material developed by IWC combines the excellent material properties of titanium and ceramic. This has enabled us to create a completely black design, without a coating, for all watch components such as push-buttons or pin buckles. With the first watch case made from sand-coloured ceramic, which matches perfectly the uniforms worn by pilots in the U.S. Navy, we are also demonstrating IWC's high level of material expertise."

THE TOP GUN LINE COMPRISES
THE FOLLOWING MODELS

🔴 The Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph TOP GUN Ceratanium (Ref. IW371815) is the first IWC Pilot's Watch made from Ceratanium®. Developed by IWC, Ceratanium® is a material that combines the advantages of titanium and ceramic in a groundbreaking new composition. The patented material is as lightweight and unbreakable as titanium and at the same time as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. It is also characterised by its excellent skin compatibility, its high degree of corrosion-resistance and its matte black colour.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The base material for Ceratanium® is a special titanium alloy. The manufacturing process for this alloy involves multiple stages and is extremely complex, as the raw material must have an extremely high degree of purity. The blank is initially machined to give the various case components their final shape. This is followed by a furnace process. During this process, oxygen diffuses into the material, a phase transformation takes place and the surface of the metal becomes ceramic. With this special surface finishing, the material not only takes on the typical properties of ceramic such as extreme hardness and scratch resistance, but also develops its striking, matte black colour.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In contrast to conventional coating procedures used today such as DLC, which can separate from the carrier or flake off, the ceramic surface of Ceratanium® adheres permanently to the material. As well as its optimum material properties, what characterises Ceratanium® is its matte black colour. It therefore also fufilled customers’ desire for a completely jet black watch at the start of the five-year development process. For the first time, Ceratanium® will be used for a pilot’s watch in the new TOP GUN collection and it will also be the first time IWC has used this material for an unlimited watch. In the Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph TOPGUN Ceratanium (Ref. IW371815), all case components, including the chronograph push buttons or the pin buckle, are made from Ceratanium®. This gives the watch a completely jet black design. The double chronograph has an integrated split-seconds hand mechanism for simultaneously measuring two short periods of time. It is powered by the 79420 calibre with self-winding and boasts a power reserve of 44 hours.

🔴 The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition "Mojave Desert" (Ref. IW389103) is the first watch with a case made from sand-coloured ceramic. This reference is limited to 500 pieces. The sand-coloured ceramic is inspired by the Mojave Desert, home to the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake – the largest land area of the U.S. Navy.
