 Earth Seen from Space: A Captivating and Technical Dial

The Cupola, the observation dome of the International Space Station (ISS), inspired this watch, which acts as a kind of porthole opening onto the planets.

I imagined Earth seen from space in symbolic alignment with the Moon and Mars. The magic of this watch lies in its display—not as a technical interpretation of an instrument watch but, for once, in an imaginative dimension,” explains Bruno Belamich, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Bell & Ross.

Conceptual in spirit, the BR-03 Astro is also highly technical in execution. For a realistic and faithful representation of Earth, maintaining Bell & Ross’s precision and legibility standards required a decal process beneath the glass.

The glass of the dial is carved into a spherical cap, allowing Earth to be rendered realistically in both volume and decal. Calculating the weight and positioning of the hands—especially to support the engraved Moon—required the same meticulous approach applied to designing components of any other precision timepiece.

A journey through the solar system, the BR-03 Astro emphasizes the expressive magic of space, with Earth as the central figure in this cosmic scene.

Reimagining Time Display

The mission of the small satellite is simple and precise: to mark the seconds by completing a full orbit around the Earth in 60 seconds. The Moon indicates the minutes, while Mars slowly follows its orbit to display the passing hours. With this captive orbital system, displayed on a blue aventurine dial, the BR-03 Astro offers a reimagined way to read traditional time indicators.

Its "hands" are unconventional: Mars indicates the hours, the Moon the minutes, and the small satellite functions as the seconds hand. Together, they create a constant animation on a dial designed like a natural setting in perspective. Every glance at the time becomes an escape.

Designed for Interstellar Travel

With a technical black exterior reminiscent of space's darkness, the BR-03 Astro asserts itself as a statement of style and individuality.

Measuring 41mm in diameter and 11.5mm in height, its case is entirely crafted from black ceramic. Water-resistant to 100 meters, it features an anti-reflective sapphire glass with a carved spherical cap at its center to showcase Earth in relief.

Powered by the Swiss automatic mechanical movement BR.CAL-327, the watch is both robust and high-performing. Its black rubber strap, secured by a black PVD-coated steel pin buckle, reflects its professional heritage.

THE BOLDNESS OF VISIBLE INNOVATION

Pushing concepts further is one of Bell & Ross’s strengths. Invested in research and innovation, particularly in luminescence, the Franco-Swiss watchmaking house sought to go beyond the dial and offer a watch with an entirely luminescent case.

To achieve this, Bell & Ross engineers developed a new material, LM3D. This luminescent component, already present in the BR-X5 Green Lum, is made from quartz fibers and luminescent material that emits a bright, tinted light.

The BR-X5 family of watches has a mission: to push the design in service of watchmaking performance to its peak, a concept that is at the core of Bell & Ross’ philosophy.

While the BR-05 line speaks a contemporary, sophisticated, and urban language, the BR-X5 collection perfectly embodies the idea of pushing the power of design further. “With the BR-X5, we wanted to push technical and aesthetic limits,” says Bruno Belamich, Creative Director of the brand.

To serve this ambition, the multi-layer construction of the 41 mm case alternates between LM3D, a photoluminescent composite material, and black DLC micro blasted grade 2 titanium, a technical material reminiscent of the aeronautical world. The watch’s architecture plays the card of lightness without disregarding its robust character.

Carved from a block of titanium, the container housing the mechanism is inserted between two shields shaped in LM3D, emitting a powerful blue luminescence.

OPTIMAL READABILITY DAY AND NIGHT

The intention of the BR-X5 Blue Lum is clear: readability is central. Inside the luminescent case, the matte black dial, protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, offers a base of clear contrast.

All graduations are precise and clearly visible from the hour and minute indexes including the sub-dial for the three-day power reserve at nine o’clock and the date window at three o’clock.

The skeletonized hour and minute hands also offer enhanced visibility, filled with Super-LumiNova. The result is spectacular both day and night.

MASTERY OF LUMINESCENCE

Bell & Ross has been a pioneer in democratizing luminescence and enhancing its power as an innovative and distinguishing style element. Initially confined to a practical function, the luminescence of hands or indexes was an asset for watches intended for use in the dark, particularly for scuba diving or in an airplane cockpit. Appearing in the 1930s, thanks to radium, luminous indications opened new horizons. However, radium had limited qualities since the luminous emissions of this mildly toxic, radioactive substance were time limited. Engineers and watchmakers engaged in continuous research to improve their processes.

The introduction of Super-LumiNova in 1993 was a significant step. Wanting to go further, Bell & Ross conceived an original concept to amplify the power of light. Initiated with the BR 03-92 Horolum in 2017, followed by the BR 03-92 Nightlum a year later, the Lum line is characterized by the exceptional luminescence of numbers, indexes, and hands. In 2019, Bell & Ross went even further with the BR 03-92 Full Lum, this time featuring a dial entirely coated with Super-LumiNova, highlighting the indications through contrast. Working on chromatic effects, the watchmaking house presented in 2020 the BR 03-92 Grey Lum, emitting a particularly intense green glow reminiscent of runway lighting, then the BR 03-92 Diver Full Lum combining various shades of luminescence, light green, and pale yellow on its dial. In 2021, the limited-edition vintage BR V2-94 Full Lum brought a new vision to the subject by showing that the Full Lum concept could perfectly marry the refined aesthetics of classic watches.

In 2022, the BR V2-92 FULL LUM offered a new ultra-luminescent proposal for a three-hand watch, and last year the BR-X5 Green Lum inaugurated the unprecedented construction of the luminescent case combining titanium and the photoluminescent composite material LM3D. A bright idea.

Betting on innovation and precision, the BR-X5 collection is equipped with a high-precision movement specially made for Bell & Ross. The BR-CAL.323 automatic mechanical movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.

A movement equipped with a personalized oscillating weight design inspired by a sports car rim and a variable inertia balance, visible through a large sapphire case back. Another asset of this manufacture movement is a quick date correction device allowing adjustment at any time.

This new BR-X5 Racing, with a particularly powerful design faithful to the BR-X5 collection's specificities, owes its strength and lightness to the use of high-tech materials, and its precision to a manufacture automatic movement.

ADESIGN INSPIRED BY MOTORSPORT

The dial’s design naturally draws inspiration from racing car dashboards. The central seconds hand features a “checkerboard” type graduation precise to a quarter of a second. Minutes are displayed on the inner bezel, outside the dial, while hours appear inside, inscribed on the dial’s glass.

The numeral typography follows the codes of the Maison’s sports watches. For optimal readability, even in darkness, the hour numerals and the hour and minute hands are coated with white Super-LumiNova® X1 luminescent material with green emission.

In motor racing, as in any other motorsport category, weight is the enemy. However, the pursuit of lightness must preserve the rigidity and robustness of the vehicles. 

That’s why constructors use materials at the pinnacle of technology, often borrowed from the aeronautics or aerospace fields.

To bestow its new BR-X5 Racing with all the necessary qualities in terms of both sturdiness and wearing comfort, Bell & Ross opted for a high-tech case, combining carbon and titanium, while the design and concept principles serve functionality.

Seen from the side, the multi-component case architecture favors simplicity and radicality, lightness, and resistance.

Four micro-blasted titanium screws cross the case, securing the “sandwich” construction. Two grade 2 micro-blasted titanium plates encase a black DLC titanium monobloc container housing the movement and integrating the crown shoulders.

On the watch’s top, the square-shaped bezel consists of two parts, with a woven carbon plate integrated into a titanium body. The strap, in either titanium or rubber, is attached to two independent plates from the case, with links offering perfect ergonomics.

Protected by a 4lmm case, the manufacture movement guaranteed for five years offers precision and reliability to this timepiece.

The date, displayed prominently through a large window marks the identity of the in-house mechanism, as does the power reserve indicator (70 hours). The latter has been specially designed to enhance the sporty style of the BR-X5 Racing, its hexagonal shape subtly reference the design of the case.
