 WHERE MYSTERY MEETS MASTERY

For over 40 years, Ulysse Nardin has transformed complex celestial mechanics into remarkably intuitive displays. With the new Blast Moonstruck in rose gold, the Manufacture continues the legacy of Dr. Ludwig Oechslin’s Trilogy of Time — a limited edition of 20 pieces bringing together five astronomical indications within a single intuitive display.

Astronomical indications had long formed part of Ulysse Nardin’s watchmaking heritage, from nineteenth-century moon phase watches to calendar timepieces developed for scientific observation and maritime navigation. Yet it was in 1983, shortly after entrepreneur Rolf Schnyder acquired the Manufacture and set it on a bold path of innovation, that a new era of astronomical watchmaking began. That same year, he encountered Dr. Ludwig Oechslin, the brilliant watchmaker, astronomer and mathematician who would become one of the most influential figures in modern horology.

While visiting master watchmaker Jörg Spöring in Lucerne, Schnyder discovered an extraordinary astronomical clock created by the young Oechslin. Fascinated by both the complexity of the mechanism and the intellect behind it, he challenged Oechslin to create an astronomical instrument that could be worn on the wrist.

The project pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved within the confines of a wristwatch. Just two years later, Oechslin unveiled his answer: the Astrolabium Galileo Galilei.

Introduced in 1985 and recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s first astronomical wristwatch, it was followed by the Planetarium Copernicus and the Tellurium Johannes Kepler, together forming the legendary Trilogy of Time.

These creations established Ulysse Nardin as a pioneer of astronomical watchmaking and demonstrated Oechslin’s unique ability to transform complex celestial calculations into remarkably intuitive displays.

Seventeen years after the completion of the Trilogy of Time, in 2009, Ulysse Nardin unveiled the first Moonstruck, a new astronomical timepiece conceived by Dr. Ludwig Oechslin and carrying the unmistakable DNA of his celestial vision. While the Trilogy explored the relationship between the Earth, Sun and planets through some of the most sophisticated astronomical wristwatches ever created, the Moonstruck introduced a new way of visualising celestial mechanics, bringing together the Earth, Sun and Moon within a single intuitive display.

Today, Ulysse Nardin continues this legacy with the new Blast Moonstruck in rose gold, a limited edition of 20 pieces, one of the Manufacture’s most sophisticated astronomical complications.

THE FEATURES :
FIVE ASTRONOMICAL INDICATIONS.
ONE INTUITIVE DISPLAY.

The Blast Moonstruck embodies one of Ludwig Oechslin’s fundamental principles: complexity should remain in the movement, not in the reading of the watch. Throughout his career, Oechslin sought to present sophisticated astronomical information in the simplest and most intuitive way possible, transforming complex celestial mechanics into displays that can be understood at a glance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Moonstruck was conceived according to that philosophy. Driven by the Manufacture calibre UN-106, the Blast Moonstruck brings together five astronomical indications within a single coherent display:

  • High precision moonphase indication (to be set every 40.3 years)

  • Days of the lunar month

  • Tidal coefficients

  • Worldtimer

  • Positions of the Sun and Moon around the globe

Rather than presenting a series of independent indications, the Blast Moonstruck displays a coherent astronomical system in which each function is directly linked to the others through the relative positions of the Earth, Sun and Moon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The apparent motion of the Sun, the real-time orbit of the Moon, the moonphase, lunar month and tidal coefficients are not displayed as separate complications, but as interconnected elements of a single astronomical model. The result is a watch capable of translating exceptionally complex celestial calculations into a display that can be understood at a glance.

While the astronomical calculations behind the display are exceptionally complex, the information is presented in a remarkably intuitive manner. The wearer can observe the relationship between the Earth, the Sun and the Moon while simultaneously reading local and world time.

HOW IT WORKS :
A GEOCENTRIC VIEW OF THE WORLD

The Blast Moonstruck presents astronomical information through a geocentric display architecture, placing the Earth at the centre of the watch and reproducing celestial mechanics as they are observed from our perspective on Earth. At the heart of the display is a three-dimensional representation of the Northern Hemisphere, viewed from the North Pole and engraved on the underside of a domed sapphire structure. Surrounding it, dedicated indications continuously track the apparent positions of the Sun and Moon around the globe.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Sun indication is mounted on a rotating 24-hour worldtimer disc displaying the 24 principal time zones. Positioned at 12 o’clock, the Sun serves as a natural reference point, allowing time to be read across the world’s 24 time zones. A two-tone day/night indication further enhances legibility by instantly distinguishing daytime from nighttime around the globe. Working in conjunction with the fixed city ring, the display simultaneously visualises global time and the apparent movement of the Sun around the Earth over the course of a day.

The Moon indication follows its own orbital path around the globe, displaying both the moonphase and the progression of the lunar month. Engineered to reproduce the lunar cycle with exceptional precision, the moonphase indication deviates by only one day after 40.3 years.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In keeping with Ludwig Oechslin’s relentless pursuit of astronomical accuracy, the Blast Moonstruck reproduces one of his most distinctive innovations: the illuminated portion of the Moon continuously faces the Sun, exactly as it does in nature. Rather than relying on a conventional moonphase display, the watch faithfully recreates the true geometry of the Earth-Moon-Sun system, ensuring that the moonphase remains correctly oriented at all times.

The relationship between the Sun and Moon also drives the tidal coefficient indication, visualising the effects of celestial mechanics on the Earth’s oceans. Through the relative positions of the Sun and Moon, the wearer can identify periods associated with spring and neap tides and anticipate the strength of tidal activity around the globe. This indication reflects the Manufacture’s long-standing connection to marine navigation.

THE CALIBRE:
ENGINEERED FOR PRECISION

Powering the Blast Moonstruck is the manufacture calibre UN-106, an automatic movement developed and produced by Ulysse Nardin. Composed of 338 components and 42 jewels, the calibre integrates world time and astronomical indications within a single mechanical architecture.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The movement incorporates both a silicon escapement and a silicon hairspring, technologies pioneered by Ulysse Nardin and first introduced to modern watchmaking with the Freak in 2001. Lightweight, anti-magnetic and highly resistant to wear, silicon eliminates the need for lubrication on critical components while enhancing precision, durability and long-term reliability. These silicon components are produced in-house by SIGATEC, Ulysse Nardin’s silicon manufacture. More than two decades after its introduction, silicon remains a cornerstone of Ulysse Nardin’s approach to innovative watchmaking.

The calibre also incorporates Ulysse Nardin’s patented time setting mechanism, allowing local time to be adjusted forwards or backwards in one-hour increments via dedicated pushers integrated into the side of the case. These corrections can be performed independently without affecting the astronomical indications, the underlying celestial calculations or the position of the minute hand.

Astronomical settings can be adjusted directly via the crown, allowing the wearer to synchronise the watch with ease. To further simplify ownership, Ulysse Nardin provides dedicated digital instructions guiding the wearer through each step of the setting procedure.

Operating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and delivering a power reserve of 50 hours, the UN-106 combines advanced astronomical functionality with everyday practicality

THE ARCHITECTURE

Introduced as the expression of Ulysse Nardin’s most innovative watchmaking, the Blast collection provides a contemporary stage for the Moonstruck’s sophisticated astronomical display. Its bold architecture, layered construction and geometric lines enhance both the technical character of the watch and the three-dimensional nature of its indications.

Housed in a 45 mm case, this limited edition combines a rose gold upper case with a black DLC-treated titanium case middle and bezel. The upper case features a combination of satin-finished and polished surfaces, accentuated by laser-finished facets that catch the light from every angle. This interplay of finishes enhances the architectural character of the watch while reinforcing the contrast between precious metal and technical materials.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At the centre of the design is a sapphire glass box developed to accommodate the Moonstruck’s unique geocentric architecture. Engraved on the underside of the domed sapphire structure, the Northern Hemisphere appears suspended above the dial, creating a striking three-dimensional representation of the Earth. Beneath the suspended representation of the Earth lies an aventurine dial, who’s naturally shimmering surface recalls a star-filled sky. The material provides a striking backdrop for the Moonstruck’s astronomical indications, enhancing both the depth and visual impact of the display. Encircling the dial, a rose gold ring engraved with the days of the month introduces an additional layer of information while reinforcing the watch’s architectural construction. The interplay of materials, colours and relief contributes to the uniquely three-dimensional character of the Moonstruck.

Ulysse Nardin – FREAK[ X CRYSTALIUM] Black Titanium Edition

Ulysse Nardin FREAK X CRYSTALIUM Black Titanium Edition2025

FUSION OF ADVANCED MECHANICS AND HIGH-TECH DECORATIVE ARTS

The independent and integrated Swiss watch Manufacturer Ulysse Nardin unveils the Freak X Crystalium, a bold new milestone that advances horology on two fronts: mechanical innovation and the avant-garde design of the Freak, now fused with the high-tech decorative art of Crystalium. Due to the complex development of the Crystalium plate, this new edition is a very limited production of just 50 exclusive pieces worldwide. It is as rare as it is radical—a true testament to how far technology can be pushed when nothing is off-limits.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When it was launched in 2001, the Freak redefined the rules of watchmaking. It was not just a new watch. It was a reset button. No hands. No dial. No crown. Instead, the Freak introduced a concept that had never been seen before: the movement itself telling the time. This first “superwatch” did not just look different, it functioned differently and ushered in a new era: the Modern Horology Era.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Behind this new Age and radical innovation was the genius and visionary Dr. Ludwig Oechslin. It all began in the 1980s, when most of the industry was turning to quartz. But Ulysse Nardin, in collaboration with Oechslin, developed an Haute Horlogerie marvel, a mechanical wristwatch capable of mapping the night sky: the Astrolabium Galileo Galilei. This extraordinary timepiece, the most complicated watch ever made, earned a place in the Guinness World Records. A few years later, in 2001, the same spirit of innovation and independence gave rise to the Freak — the most complicated time-only watch ever created, and one of the most groundbreaking in horological history.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It was also the very first watch to introduce silicon technology — a move that would trigger a wave across the entire industry and open the door to a new age of high-performance, ultra-precise timekeeping. Since its debut, the Freak has obtained over 20 patents and sparked a movement in 21st century horology. More than a breakthrough in engineering, the Freak is a symbol of creativity, mechanical advancement, and independence.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Introduced in 2019, the Freak X brought this maverick DNA into a streamlined form. For the first time, a crown was added for winding and setting the time. But its signature spirit remained: one-hour flying orbital carousel and a mechanical theatre. With the Freak X Crystalium, Ulysse Nardin takes the next step, merging its pioneering mechanics with a whole new frontier of design: an innovative rotating hour disc, born from a high-tech process at the edge of material science.

Disruptive by nature, refined by craft

At Ulysse Nardin, innovation goes beyond mechanics. It is also about how a watch feels, looks, and beats on the wrist. The Freak is the iconic ambassador of this mindset: a true manifesto of pushing the boundaries of innovation and technology.

Now, with the Freak X Crystalium, that legacy moves into the realm of high-tech decorative arts. The rotating hour disc is made of Crystalium, a revolutionary material that fuses scientific precision with raw aesthetic expression. Here is how it is made.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At the core is ruthenium, a platinum-group metal known for its strength and shine —10 times rarer than platinum. Over several days, it undergoes a slow, controlled vapour-deposition crystallisation process — the same way frost forms on glass. This process, which took years to perfect, results in natural, fractal-like crystal structures, impossible to duplicate, full of shimmering texture and microscopic complexity. Each disc is a one-off, a singular piece of material art. To heighten its effect, it is treated with a warm rose gold PVD finish and subtle black shading, hand-applied with fine varnish to deepen the contrast and accentuate the light play. This is not decoration. This is next-generation craftsmanship.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Freak X Crystalium is housed in a black DLC-coated titanium case, with a matching bezel, black hour indicator, and minute bridge. It is paired with a ballistic-textured black rubber strap that gives the watch a bold and modern presence. This ultra-dark backdrop sets the stage for the Crystalium disc, radiant through its rose gold colour, alive with light, and rich in visual depth: a captivating expression of material in motion.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At the heart of the watch lies the automatic calibre UN-230, featuring a flying carrousel with a silicon balance wheel and escapement—crafted entirely in-house at Ulysse Nardin’s dedicated silicon lab, SIGATEC. Both components are suspended by a bridge that functions as the minute hand, completing a full rotation every hour. The Crystalium hour disc, with its pointer positioned beneath the movement, serves as the hour hand and completes a full rotation every 12 hours. This subtle, continuous motion perfectly fuses engineering and aesthetics in seamless synchrony.

The Freak X Crystalium is a watch that embodies everything Ulysse Nardin stands for: mechanical daring, material innovation, and the bold spirit to explore what is next. It is about redefining the future of watchmaking, one revolution at a time

The independent Swiss watchmaking Maison Ulysse Nardin unveils the Blast Free Wheel Maillechort, an exclusive timepiece limited to just 50 pieces. This unconventional horological creation pushes the boundaries of traditional watchmaking, offering a bold fusion of mysterious design and groundbreaking mechanism.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At the heart of this horological masterpiece lies a series of unprecedented flying mechanisms. From the floating double-barrel system to the award-winning Ulysse Anchor Constant Escapement, the Blast Free Wheel Maillechort challenges the conventional and elevates precision engineering to new heights. Beneath the ultra-glass box, a dial crafted from Maillechort adds depth, evolving over time into a unique expression of character and craftsmanship.

At the heart of this edgy Haute Horlogerie complication, the unique and innovative UN-176 calibre seems to defy not only the laws of physics, but also the very principles of watchmaking construction. Perfecting this flying movement, entirely designed by the integrated Manufacture, required two years of research and development to Ulysse Nardin’s technical department.

The Blast Free Wheel Maillechort presents Ulysse Nardin’s award-winning flying tourbillon with the Ulysse Anchor Constant Escapement. Composed of 45 components, the tourbillon is located at 6 o’clock and boasts a revolutionary constant escapement. Challenging the principle of the traditional anchor escapement, the Ulysse Anchor Constant Escapement features a circular frame with a pallet fork fixed in the center, supported in space on two blade springs less than a quarter of the thickness of a hair in diameter. Mounted perpendicular to each other, these are subjected to a bending force that curves them and maintains them.

This major technical achievement directed by Ulysse Nardin guarantees a perfectly even impulse on the balance wheel, irrespective of the watch’s power reserve. Thanks to silicon technology also incorporated in the hairspring and the escapement, the jewels of the usual escapement-wheel become superfluous, as does the anchor pivot. This exceptional tourbillon, which reflects Ulysse Nardin’s triumphs in terms of innovation, proudly won the Tourbillon Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2015.

At 12 o’clock, a floating double-barrel system is positioned, flying without any visible attachment on the surface. One barrel is fully exposed, while the other operates unseen. Precision ball bearings hold everything in perfect alignment. The energy it accumulates provides the timepiece with an exceptional autonomy of seven days, outlined by a highly original power reserve display at 4 o’clock. The indicator remains static, unlike the display disc: three bands opposing the indicator mean that the watch is fully wound, while a single band indicates that the power reserve is almost empty.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In addition, several additional flying mechanisms are displayed on either side of the barrel: on its left, an intermediate wheel, a power reserve differential, and a reduction gear; on its right, the winding mechanism that connects it to the crown’s winding stem, allowing the selection of the winding system train or the time setting.

The Blast Free Wheel Maillechort is a spectacular show. Its bold 45mm case, crafted in white gold, features negative angle facets designed using a complex laser method. Renowned for its disruptive aesthetic and ergonomic properties, this satin-finished and polished Blast case once again proves the cutting-edge know-how of the independent Manufacture.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The geometric lines feature a unique ultra-glass box in sapphire crystal that offers a wide-open view of the mysterious movement, which is also visible through the sides. The distinctive characteristic of this glass box lies in its construction: it was carved from a single block of sapphire crystal, meticulously hollowed out to form the box and achieve this unparalleled shape.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Beneath the dome glass and the flying mechanism lies a dial crafted from Maillechort, a traditional alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel. Known for its warm, silvery tones and distinctive grained texture, it is prized for its durability and unique aesthetic. More difficult to manufacture than brass due to its hardness and complex composition, it requires craftsmanship and precision. Historically used in musical instruments for its resonant acoustic properties, Maillechort is a “living metal” that develops a one-of-a-kind patina over time, adding character and depth. This material was invented in the early 19th century by French engineers Maillet and Chorier, whose combined names became «Maillechort».

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Underscoring the meticulous attention to detail in its design, the case back of the Blast Free Wheel Maillechort is open, featuring a sapphire glass and a Maillechort plate. This exclusive limited edition of 50 pieces features a blue velvet effect and waterproof rubber strap, with a white gold folding buckle.
