NORD Zeitmaschine – CROSSNROLL

NORD ZeitmaschineCROSSNROLL Automatic Steel 44,7 mm Collection 2018

MODEL  CROSSNROLL

The name CROSSNROLL borne by the new NORD Zeitmaschine watch is composed in part from the word CROSS, which describes that the hand  runs on a cross-shaped minute-track.
The tip of the minute hand is mounted on a slide, which rolls back and forth on the hand platform, hence the word ROLL in the name of the watch.

28 rubies and 18 precision ball bearings are integrated in the NORD Zeitmaschine  CROSSNROLL movement, of which 14 ball bearings are mounted in the hand assembly alone. Others are found on the winding rotor and the hour indicator.

  • Patented Hour indicator:
The hour indicator disc is mounted on a swivel arm, which in turn is connected with the central mounting cross by ball bearings. The entire hour indicator mechanism is mounted over the hand assembly. The swivel arm on which the hour indicator disc is mounted has no mechanical drive and only starts moving due to gravitation, effected through a change in the position of the wrist on which the watch is fastened.

The hour disc itself is driven via mechanically driven cogs, independent of the swivel arm. This hour indicator, for which a patent is pending (N°  EP18405009.4  and  CH252/18)  , facilitates the hour indicator disc being in any geographically undefined position over the dial, as a result of the movement of the wrist on which the watch is fastened, and the resultant gravitation. Irrespective of the position of the swivel arm with hour indicator, the red arrow on the hour indicator always points to the correct hour of the day, aligned with the longitudinal axis of the watch case.

  • Display of the hours in conjunction with hour indices:
Hour indices are applied to the underside of the glass, to facilitate reading off the hour of the day in conjunction with hour indices if necessary. By holding the wrist vertically, the swivel arm moves with the hour disc, driven by gravitation,  into the desired position of the hour indices. As soon as the swivel arm comes to a standstill after moving back and forth a few times, it is possible to read off the hours in conjunction with the hour indices. Furthermore, this special hour indicator mechanism, effected through strong movement of the wrist, allows the swivel arm and the hour indicator mounted on it to begin strongly rotating. The swivel arm with the mounted hour indicator can rotate through multiple rotations of its central pivot point here, whereby the hours are displayed correctly at all times.

  • Minutes:
The complicated hand assembly is constructed such that the centre of gravity is always located precisely over the central pivot point, regardless of the position of the group. To achieve this, alongside numerous other parts, 2 counterweights are mounted on the lower end of the hand assembly, which always move in the opposite direction to the extending and retracting (ROLL-ing) pointer tip. These 2 opposing counterweights are connected with the pointer tip by a connecting rod system. In addition to the centre of gravity of the complete hand assembly always lying over the central pivot point, the mechanism is designed and constructed such that the gravitational forces that act on the pointer slide with pointer tip and counterweights always counteract each other.

In a level position, no gravitational forces act on the pointer slide with pointer tip and the two counterweights. However, gravitational forces act on the pointer slide with pointer tip and counterweights in all other possible watch positions. At all times and in every possible position of the hand assembly, the acting forces mutually counteract each other. In order to achieve all these characteristics, it was necessary to find a solution that took multiple factors into consideration.

  1.  Was it necessary to work with a number of different materials such as steel, brass, aluminium, titanium, platinum etc.  and their varying densities.
  2. Must all pivot points and lever lengths be calculated precisely.
  3. Additionally, must the volumes of the individual components be precisely tailored to each other. The use of 18 ball bearings in total facilitates a mechanism with maximum precision and minimal friction.

Many individual parts of the hand assembly consist of very light materials such as aluminium and titanium. However, in order to achieve the centre of gravity always lying directly above the central pivot point, it was also necessary to use one of the heaviest metals. As such, a balancing weight produced from solid platinum (density 20.7) is mounted on the platform in the front area beneath the pointer tip. This solid platinum weight balances out the somewhat larger and heavier structure at the lower end of the hand assembly.

NORD ZEITMASCHINE, the independent Swiss watch brand founded by watch maker Daniel Nebel, announces its new timepiece, the FREESDIAL.

FREESDIAL

The FREESDIAL name, which the watch bears, on the one hand describes that the watch has dials that are not fixed in place (FREE DIALS) and on the other hand that the hands and dials of this watch move in “FREESTYLE”. The special minute hand, which also changes in length, moves over the moving dials (FREE DIALS). On the back of the watch, 3 additional, freely rotating indicator discs (FREE DIALS) are integrated in the winding rotor. These 3 indicator discs are each installed centrally with a ball bearing and rotate freely around their respective axis of rotation. The hand and dials of the minute indication move in a specific “FREESTYLE” manner and fundamentally differ from other watches, which usually feature a fixed watch face and hands that continuously rotate from the centre of the watch. The NORD N4 movement contains 30 ruby jewels and 14 precision ball bearings.

MINUTE INDICATION

The indication of the minutes is performed via the hand controlled by the eccentric cams, as well as by the 2 movable dials. (FREE DIALS) The entire hand assembly group is comprised of a total of 27 individual components. The hand is powered by 2 counter-rotating gear wheels with fitted eccentric cams.

The hand changes its length over the course of the 60 minutes by means of the additional eccentric lever. The additional eccentric lever is connected via a connecting rod with the hand tip that shifts. As a result, the tip of the hand moves and slides up and down on the main hand, in which the tip of the hand achieves the greatest lift per minute at approx 15 minutes and 45 minutes. In turn, the main hand reaches its greatest lift and highest speed per minute in the area of 60 minutes and 30 minutes and moves slower in the area of 15 minutes and 45 minutes. The two movable dials (FREE DIALS) are driven per 1 gear wheel with a fitted eccentric cam and are designed in such a manner that they have their greatest lift in the area of 15 and 45 minutes. The dials move in the opposite direction to the hand, which increases the resolution of the time display and improves legibility.

The mechanism of the minute indication is generally comprised of 2 groups. Group 1, the movable dials and group 2, the special hand. Due to the use of eccentric cams, which drive the hand and dials, in the course of 60 minutes, they move at varying speeds. The interaction between the hand and dials is designed in such a manner that at the point of high lift per minute of the hand, the dials move with a small lift per minute and vice versa. Each of the 2 dials is mounted on a separate support, which has a ball bearing mounted pivot point. The support to which the respective dial is secured has a weight on the opposite side and is designed in such a manner that the centre of gravity of the entire dial support group is located exactly above the ball bearing mounted pivot point.

GMT

The 24h ring of the GMT display can be adjusted with the left crown in both directions at any time and completely independently.

DAY & NIGHT

A fixed disc is located in the centre of the GMT display with the indications for day and night. When the arrow (of the GMT display) moves in the upper half of the disc, it is day and when it moves in the lower half, it is night.

DATE

The date is indicated through a large window at the top left. An additional date window is located on the opposite side on the right, which however is covered by a grill and has only been placed here in order to achieve visual symmetry.

WINDING ROTOR

Three smaller, ball bearing mounted and freely movable indicator discs (FREE DIALS) are integrated in the 360° winding rotor mounted on the reverse, which do not have a mechanical function and only serve as a visual and playful element. The movement of the watch does not only rotate the winding rotor, but also the 3 smaller, 5-arm indicator discs. The following 5 digits are visible per each small indicator disc: 7, 5 (shown as a 5-pointed star), 3 (shown as a 3-pointed star), 1 (shown as an arrow) and 0.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...                     BIG FOTO

Due to the movement of the watch, the 3 small freely movable indicator discs are brought into movement, enabled by an asymmetrical cut-out on the inside of the indicator discs. Three markings are visible centrally on the winding rotor, to which the 3 indicator discs point during standstill.

The highest number of combinations is 3 times a 7, therefore 777, which point to the central markings of the winding rotor. (Very difficult to achieve.)

Nord Zeitmaschine - Variocurve

Nord Zeitmaschine - Variocurve

Variocurve is called the Clock, which has something revolutionary. The operation is rather difficult to put into words. The minute hand has no fixed pivot point like this in central or retrograde hands is the case. No, he remembers his eccentric movement of the drive rod of an old steam locomotive. Steampunk in the best sense. The pointer describes a displaced pivot point, a kidney-shaped movement, a variable curve, thus the name "VarioCurve". After his countless hours of building and simulating fog took a path that could solve the problem of how the two "dead spots" of the eccentric, while the display difficult to read would be, because the distance to be traveled is very short in this area. He designed "just" two small slices with the corresponding minute scales that range, care during this time for the detail view.

Variocurve V1

The minute hand alone is a fine-mechanical masterpiece. It is made from a special copper alloy called ARCAP that can be worked very well and is characterized by high strength and good anti-magnetic properties. The major difficulty in this part was, the tolerances of the sliding axis to be interpreted and implemented, that the pointer is stuck, but has so little friction that the movement required little effort as possible. "Sliding" he calls it in its technical description.

This shows the difference between then mercilessly on the screen and the simulation of reality that has already been many exceptional designs undoing. "Yes, I have ourselves quite properly," the fog rated masterpiece with his sympathetic understatement.
The minute hand is the most spectacular element of the Clock. Therefore, it is also visually edited with attention to detail. On the "side of the hammer," it has two wells, the fog - of course using a custom built tool - finely sandblasted. The edges are sanded and polished.
The bridges are made of ARCAP. The main bridge is the large area already known from previous time-machine mist striking stripes. You will first rhodium and then depending on the version with black, pink or yellow gold plated first. All prints on different disks and bridges made in the pad printing process, here again comes a savvy little machine is used, which has been continuously improved over the years.
It's "yes is only an ETA"
A total of 40 plant parts produced fog itself. The whole thing is driven by a motor, but proven, the automatic
ETA caliber 2824th "Why should I develop all the work from scratch, if I can get the 2824 with such a reliable and good powertrain?" Fog says pragmatically. An attitude that represents the way, even the gifted Ludwig Oechslin and over again - he has repeatedly used as a basis for ETA drives his ingenious constructions. Nevertheless, we already on the watch forums for comments in German VarioCurve, "is' yes' only 's ETA ..."

Idiosyncratic is the construction of the lift rotor. This is all about and a little reminiscent of a fancy car rims. The remarkable thing is that it is milled from one piece, and in a way that is much less worn one half of the blank, whereby the weight - is asymmetrically distributed - invisible from above. This is essential for a functioning elevator performance.

The steel case is another example Nebel'schen work. The thick blank is machined in several steps, drilled, brushed and sandblasted. At 6-Clock position (or where they would be in normal clock) inside a special bulge is necessary so that the minute hand can make its entire stroke. The bezel and case back with sapphire crystal both are held by seven screws. Because of this indentation and the dismantling of the work is not easy, the minute hand must be removed first so that the work can be removed from its housing. But the trick was necessary because the clock had simply become too big. Now the housing measures just 44mm, making it very portable.
