In the workshops of De Bethune in l’Auberson, particles become luminous, metals - and titanium here in particular - emit visible light... matter oxidizes, properties change, surfaces transform, and unprecedented natural colors appear.

Denis Flageollet, Master Watchmaker and Founder of De Bethune, along with his team initially began working on the tone of blue. A color linked to the notion of infinity and harmony, natural blue is one of the major research fields at De Bethune. It has since become the unique signature of the house.

Like a luminous vibration, each color offers a different type of energy

De Bethune unveils its new chromatic palette with the launch of the DB28xs Purple Rain, a bold evolution! Indeed, before reaching blue, purple unfurls its chromatic richness, merging nuances of red and blue in a harmonious ballet.

It's a color that has inspired artists, poets, and visionaries for centuries, often symbolizing passion, spirituality, and innovation. In the palette of heated titanium colors, purple thus paves the way for the emergence of blue, gradually introducing cool nuances while retaining a touch of warmth and depth. This subtle transition creates a harmonious link between the different shades, offering a smooth continuity in visual perception.

DB28xs

Placing innovation at the heart of the process. Integrating creativity. Pushing the boundaries of innovation. Thinking outside the box. Not repeating, but inventing, ingeniously considering precision, reliability, readability, and comfort.

The DB28xs model is not simply a watch aesthetically smaller. It is a watch that opened a new chapter at De Bethune. A model that marked the history of the brand, as it is another step in the initiatory journey that has animated Denis Flageollet for 20 years. If the DB28 is an iconic watch of De Bethune, this new version is all the more remarkable for the particular sense it carries within it. With a significantly smaller diameter than previous models (39mm), while retaining the unique and characteristic design of De Bethune, the DB28xs is a small miracle. Thanks to the technology required to carry out the project. But above all, by the virtuosity of De Bethune in transcending the spirit of the Enlightenment into the world of 21st-century wristwatches, by reformulating exceptional craftsmanship and offering unprecedented aesthetic creation. There is no question of reproducing the past identically.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

But rather: how to evoke new emotions in the face of exceptional objects? Denis Flageollet's intention, Master Watchmaker and Founder of De Bethune, is pure. He observes tradition from an innovative perspective and works to make contemporary mechanical watches a cultural incarnation of time measurement on our wrist.

For a beautiful object to be born somewhere, mastery must have reached a certain level of maturity.

If the DB28xs was born of an extraordinary feat, successfully transposing the majestic feeling and grand emotion exuded by the great clocks of the Age of Enlightenment with their scientific instruments, onto a simple wrist, solely through the grace of micromechanics and the delicate aesthetics of a small watch, it opens up the deep innermost thoughts of its creator.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thus, beneath the deceptive appearance of simple miniaturization, the uniqueness of this watch and its design go far beyond its smaller size and its functioning.

Between art and science

For the geniuses of the Age of Enlightenment, the goal was to create scientific instruments whose beauty emanated from their function, mechanical simplicity, and sobriety. Then, the powerful elevated them into true works of art, enlisting the best craftsmen of their time, such as cabinetmakers, bronzers, and enamelers like Boulle, Caffieri, or Coteau. The success of the DB28xs Purple Rain and the DB28xs Starry Seas demonstrates that Denis Flageollet's teams are fully imbued with the spirit of De Bethune that stems from this culture.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The concept of perpetual evolution in their work and thus their constant self-questioning, relying both on mastery of ancestral craftsmanship and new technologies. This incessant movement is the keystone of the manufacture, which constantly cultivates this mindset. "There is no point in working if not to progress, and the only way to achieve this is to continually question oneself. Continuously rethink and reconsider the work, evolving it by modifying an element, a process, a technique, and sometimes making tiny, often imperceptible improvements," commented Denis Flageollet.

A lighter, more impact-resistant DB28

For centuries, watchmakers have shielded mechanisms from external influences within towers, tables, and dials. As the quest for precision evolved, so did the desire to wear these timepieces. Adapting this chronometric precision to various and often extreme wearing conditions, including resistance to shocks, accelerations, and magnetic fields, requires cutting-edge research. The reduced size of this watch is part of this adaptation process. The caliber DB2005 has been adjusted to this miniaturization without compromising chronometric quality. Moreover, the increased lightness of the watch enhances its efficiency in case of shocks and accelerations.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Aesthetically, the choice of blue color was not merely for visual attributes; its presence within De Bethune mechanisms holds genuine technical legitimacy. Initially seeking to solve technical problems of stability and chronometry during the development of new De Bethune balances, Denis Flageollet created a novel oscillator combining the soft metallic white hue of palladium with the vibrant blue of titanium. Consequently, the natural blue color became one of the brand's signatures, with its reflections on different materials and finishes allowing for an infinite and refined play of shades.

Today, an intriguing evolution unfolds as De Bethune explores the chromatic spectrum and boldly unveils a new enchanting facet: purple. Continuing the work of the great master watchmakers of the 18th century in their quest for perfect time measurement, coupled with a sense of absolute aesthetics, De Bethune utilizes the most modern scientific and technological discoveries. The efforts of De Bethune teams converge to invent unique, innovative, and high-performance solutions. The principle remains the same for over 20 years: to create timepieces that respect horological tradition while integrating mechanical, technical, and aesthetic innovations of our time.

A unique splendor and magnetic presence

Through this mastery of purple and the natural oxidation of titanium, De Bethune does not simply create watches, but timeless works of art. Each piece reflects the perfect marriage between horological tradition and contemporary innovation, captivating watch enthusiasts.

De Bethune – DB28XP Kind Of Blue Tourbillon Sapphire Edition

De BethuneCURRENT DB28XP Kind Of BlueTourbillon Sapphire Titanium Limited Edition 2023

Hong Kong, December 1st, 2023 – Currently on a tour across Asia to engage with passionate collectors of the brand and explore its rich history and culture, Denis Flageollet, the founder and master watchmaker of De Bethune, has chosen to unveil the new DB28XP Kind of Blue Tourbillon Sapphire in Hong Kong.

This special timepiece, he believes, will resonate with a market attuned to the vibrations of such artifacts and the energy they exude.

A Natural Evolution of Excellence

The DB28XP Kind of Blue Tourbillon Sapphire represents the seamless evolution of two iconic models from De Bethune: the DB28XP and the DB28 Kind of Blue Tourbillon. It encapsulates the best of both worlds by merging the sleek design and refinement of the DB28XP with a distinctly blue aesthetic inspired by the DB28 Kind of Blue Tourbillon, a hallmark of the Manufacture’s signature style.

A Captivating Dial

This is a realm where layers of interpretation, textures, and the interplay of light with shadows and reflections take centre stage. Crafted from blued titanium, the watch unveils an architectural fusion of space, time, and light at first glance. Its deep and luminous blue hue is achieved through the natural oxidation of the material, transforming each timepiece into a unique work of art.

The dial, entirely crafted in Microlight, breathes new life into and modernizes the traditional guilloché technique. Across its expansive flat surface, this method gains newfound significance, reinforcing its structure. By playing with shadow and light, it introduces depth, resulting in a more structured and dynamic architectural outcome. The overall effect becomes distinctly contemporary.

Ultra-Thin Mastery by De Bethune

De Bethune embarked on a groundbreaking journey into the realm of ultra-thin timepieces in 2020 with the launch of the DB28XP, celebrating two decades of mechanical and aesthetic exploration. In his pursuit of an ultra-thin watch, Denis Flageollet conceived it as both a technical and aesthetic challenge—an intricate dance between delicacy and complexity, an adventure demanding precision and a harmonious interplay between design and constraints.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As if destined, the DB28XP has evolved into an embodiment of beauty, an elegance that epitomizes simplicity even in its most absolute form. Today, it stands as an ideal representation of refined aesthetics and technical finesse.

The Chronometric Expertise of De Bethune

The manually winding DB2009v4 movement features the distinctive De Bethune balance wheel, visible through the dial via a 6 o’clock opening. It is the outcome of De Bethune’s ongoing physical and mathematical approach to enhancing its functionality. This balance wheel incorporates the latest advancements—modest in diameter, crafted from titanium, and fitted with small white gold weights positioned externally, providing it with exceptional inertia, reliability, and remarkable regulating quality.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Equipped with the renowned De Bethune hairspring, a delicate spring considered the soul of the mechanical watch, it has been meticulously designed to maintain its center of gravity precisely at the midpoint. This is achieved through a flat curve fixed externally to the hairspring. Variations in the thickness of the blade contribute to nearly perfect concentric development, offering numerous advantages, including reduced height, improved concentricity quality, finer adjustment of the pallet, eliminating the need for pins, and the curve’s shape acting as a shock absorber.

Furthermore, the internal structure of the material remains intact, having been neither stressed nor bent. Through these proven and continually evolving enhancements, De Bethune has increased the power reserve efficiency by +20%, extending it to a total of 5 days. This achievement is visible through the sapphire glass case back, allowing connoisseurs to marvel at the complexity and beauty of each component.

The De Bethune Tourbillon: Why So Small, So Light, So Fast?

In the expansive array of complications and functions that De Bethune has mastered, the tourbillon has often taken a leading role. A tourbillon equippd with an extraordinarily lightweight cage (0.18 gr., the lightest ever created) rotating every thirty seconds, comprising a total of 63 components (the lightest of which weighs less than 0.0001 gram!).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Today, a wrist-worn watch experiences significantly more “torture” than a pocket watch. Rapid and erratic wrist movements impose kinetic brutality on watch mechanics, warranting careful consideration. Just as Breguet invented the tourbillon to counteract the effects of Earth’s gravity and enhance the precision of marine watches, De Bethune sought ways to optimize it for today’s wristwatches.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The equation? To be more effective on a wrist subjected to quick and erratic movements, the tourbillon must have a higher frequency and a faster rotation speed.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

By creating a tourbillon in titanium and silicon with a frequency of 36,000 vibrations/hour and an extraordinarily lightweight cage rotating every thirty seconds, describing the feat is easier  than achieving it. Much like an airborne insect, a true exoskeleton maintains the entire structure.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thus, the De Bethune tourbillon, so small, so light, so fast, simply fulfills its function better for contemporary watches. The futuristic shape of the tourbillon bridge symmetrically and perfectly supports the tourbillon on both sides, keeping it in its position.

Comfort and Innovation

True to the essence of all models in its collection, the DB28XP Kind of Blue Tourbillon Sapphire consistently surprises with the lightweight construction of its case. Crafted entirely from polished blued grade 5 titanium with a microlight case, embellished with sapphire rods and mounted on floating lugs that adapt to the size and various movements of the wrist—a patented De Bethune system. The case features a more contoured profile, following the natural lines of the wrist. The Microlight finish of the baseplate extends onto the sides, reaching the outer edge of the case—a meticulous undertaking that proves challenging in the absence of simple geometric elements.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Completing the ensemble is an alligator leather strap with a titanium buckle, contributing to the practical and enjoyable wear of this timepiece.

De Bethune – Kind of Two Cempasuchil II – Unique Piece

De Bethune Maestri’Art Kind of Two “Cempasúchil II” Titanium Unique Pièce for SIAR 2023

On the occasion of Mexico’s SIAR watch show De Bethune presents the “Cempasúchil II”, a new one-of-a-kind creation in its Maestri’art collection.

Twin sides! Two dials, two faces, two identities...Hovering between life and death, with a touch of naughty humour, just like the joyous and colourful Mexican Dia de Muertos celebration!

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For Mexico, De Bethune is once again having fun in celebrating the Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos). Denis Flageollet makes no secret of the fact that since the release of the Kind-of-Two in 2020, he has revelled in surprising people with the multiple possibilities afforded by such a double-sided watch and is looking forward to receiving collectors’ requests for one-of-a-kind timepieces in order to play with these countless options!

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To kick off this future festival of made-to-order Kind-of-Two watches, what more fun could Denis Flageollet have than getting down to work with his long-time accomplice – Swiss Art engraver Michèle Rothen – in order to demonstrate the watch's full potential. Midway between engraving and micro-sculpture, Michèle's engraving surpasses all existing standards. Her infinitely accurate work is backed by Swiss artistic talent recognised as among the very best.

A joyful and naughty depiction of death

For the "Cempasúchil II" reflecting a hint of mischief (and a touch of naughtiness!), they have jointly revived the characters featured in the DW5 Cempasúchil (presented in Mexico in 2020), this time by choosing the double-sided Kind-of-Two watch.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Its first dial is transformed into a dance floor for two Calaveras, indicating the hours and minutes. On the other side of the watch, a dedicated decor (usually hidden behind a secret cover) features a naughty depiction of our two Calaveras 'in action'.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Beneath a show of laughing ossuaries worthy of La Catrina, an array of cams, levers and are set into motion and bring the two characters to life as a surprising and fun treat for amused observers. Animated on demand by a highly complex mechanism (like a small automaton) by means of a button at 12 o'clock, the merry scene conveys a sense of gaiety and mischief... An even closer look reveals a little humorous touch from the two designers as it’s the "girl" taking the lead in this traditional Kamasutra position.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The entire engraving work on both dial sides is a nod to the brilliant Mexican engraver José Guadalupe Posada, an artist who made the dead dance in the late 19th century and already inspired Denis Flageollet and Michèle Rothen in 2020 when designing the DW5 Cempasúchil. With this new creation, they have once again picked the aesthetic codes and details of the work down by Posada, who has gained lasting renown for his genius in turning macabre art on its head and aligning it with the singular way Mexicans joyfully celebrate their dear departed. The titanium casing has been flame-blued and engraved with subtle gold inlays to bring light and a discreetly precious touch.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This one-of-a-kind creation thus perfectly demonstrates the versatile nature of the Kind-of-Two, which offers clients the possibility of ordering bespoke versions with their very own automaton mechanism, giving free rein to their imagination. This provides scope for all kinds of animations, including non-erotic ones, as well as different movement configurations. The beauty of this double-sided artwork thus reflects both mechanical and aesthetic perfection.
