An exercise in style

The Angles Guichets pushes the Angles aesthetic further through one of the most demanding exercises in watch design: the aperture display.

Demanding because the usual visual markers of a watch — those that typically define its identity — vanish behind an almost entirely solid face: no central hands, no conventional dial, no counters, chapter ring or logo – only two arcs revealing the passage of time.

This deliberate restraint heightens the designer’s challenge, requiring personality to emerge through proportion, rhythm and detail, while remaining true to the Angles’ underlying design language.

On the Angles Guichets, this balance is achieved with apparent ease, with a poetry of its own. Sidestepping established conventions, Beda’a offers an alternative way of reading time. Sohaib Maghnam imagined a watch that reflects how its passage is perceived from Earth: on the wrist, at a glance, the Sun and the Moon appear to move across the sky before the wearer’s eyes. 

The discreet elegance of apertures

The upper aperture displays the hours on a fixed scale from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Sun then the Moon travel across the opening, indicating the passage of day and night. Their motion is slow, almost imperceptible, intimating a different relationship with time.

The Angles Guichets favours a slower pace — contemplation over precision — which is why the watch omits any seconds indication.

The lower aperture is dedicated to the minutes. Here, Beda’a introduces a characteristic inversion: as the minute disc advances, a fine arrow set flush with the dial marks the reading point, reinforcing clarity while maintaining visual restraint.

Both displays follow a principle of moderation, in line with the quiet luxury shaping contemporary watchmaking: minutes are shown in five-minute increments; hours appear as even numerals, separated by applied dot markers and framed by a subtle sector-style outline — a nod to classical codes. 

A landmark calibre    

On the movement side, Beda’a retains the hand-wound Peseux/ETA 7001 calibre, long cherished by collectors. Peseux is one of Switzerland’s established movement manufacturers, founded in 1923 in the eponymous town near Neuchâtel.

To allow the timekeeping narrative to unfold across 24 hours, Beda’a worked with a Swiss partner to modify the gear train so that it runs at half the usual speed — completing a full rotation in 24 hours instead of 12, while preserving a 42-hour power reserve.

The calibre’s celebrated slimness keeps the Angles Guichets to just 6.3 mm in thickness, giving the watch a balanced profile on any wrist. Both versions of the Angles Guichets — stainless steel and gold-plated stainless steel — now join the permanent, non-limited collection.

The Eclipse: Qatar Limited Edition replaces the original blue accents of the watch with a deep Maroon – as carried on Qatar’s Flag.  This is also shown on the case back of the Eclipse, with a new Maroon rotor.

 Collectors, however, had long requested a mechanical version. Today, the watch company’s designer and CEO Sohaib Maghnam answers that call.

After 15 months of development, the challenge of remaining true to the original Angles design has been met with only a 0.7 mm increase in profile.

Some challenges are as easy to phrase as they are hard to solve: how do you transform a quartz watch into a mechanical one… and without changing its design? The question may sound straightforward, but it is anything but — especially for the Angles collection, where design is everything.

Sohaib Maghnam envisioned a shape at once powerful and graceful: a watch with an octagonal bezel set on an angled case middle, its stepped layers refined by a delicate interplay of finishes. It was an audacious project for a fledgling brand, yet one that proved decisive: today, the Angles collection stands at the forefront of Beda’a’s growth, embraced by collectors of all kinds – from first-time buyers to seasoned enthusiasts, women and men alike.

Almost all, that is: “A segment of traditional watchmaking enthusiasts had been asking for a mechanical version of the Angles watch. But the collection lives through and for its design, where proportions are key. Fitting a mechanical movement into the volume made for a quartz one is next to impossible without compromising those proportions. In watchmaking, whenever a model exists in both quartz and mechanical versions, the latter is always noticeably thicker. That was never an option for the Angles,” explains Sohaib Maghnam, CEO of Beda’a.

15 months of development…so that nothing had to change

It took no less than fifteen months of development to get there. Countless infinitesimal adjustments were necessary… to ensure that the evolution would remain undetectable. In the end, the difference between the quartz and mechanical versions amounts to no more than 0.7 mm — a distinction rather than a difference, and virtually imperceptible.

Achieving this balance required a number of subtle modifications and refinements. Among them, a slimmer bezel, dial, and crystal, along with a solid caseback to avoid the extra height of a sapphire exhibition back. “And a new crown,” adds Sohaib Maghnam, “because the Angles Mecaline is hand-wound, the crown also had to be redesigned to ensure perfect handling in everyday use.”

Reliability, ease of ownership – and a watchmaker’s touch

The mechanical movement chosen for the Angles is the ETA 7001 (with approximately 42 hours of power reserve), marking a first for Beda’a. This caliber is widely regarded for its reliability and ease of maintenance, highlighting its cost-effectiveness across every dimension of ownership.

 To visually distinguish the mechanical model from its quartz counterpart, the Angles Mecaline features a small seconds display at 6 o’clock. “It affirms the Angles’ horological identity, and also serves as a reassuring sign of the watch’s proper functioning,” notes Sohaib Maghnam.
