“The Tribute2 builds on the success of the Tribute 1 launched in 2021. It merges traditional watchmaking with contemporary design, highlighting the core values of the brand: transparent mechanics that artfully display the inner mechanisms, three-dimensional design that provides visual depth through various levels and the intricate details of the movement and meticulous hand decoration, which features prominently in this timepiece.” –  Claude Greisler, Co-Founder and Master Watchmaker at Armin Strom.

Unique craftsmanship: the artistic grattage mainplate in the Copper Edition

The eye-catching copper-coloured mainplate in the Tribute2 – Copper Edition showcases a distinctive processing technique known as grattage. The process was originally developed by mechanical engineers to create perfectly flat surfaces. Instead of being engraved, hammered or polished, the material is meticulously scraped by hand.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This results in a distinctive, stunning pattern – and it is an art form that only a handful of craftsmen still master today. For the mainplate of the Tribute2 – Copper Edition, this technique is used decoratively and gives each piece a look reminiscent of delicate brushstrokes. The mainplate and its unique finish are further accentuated by a copper-coloured PVD coating.

Depth and elegance in the dial

The off-centre fumé grey dial lends the watch additional depth with its subtle colour gradient, which sees the vibrant highlights in the centre gradually transition into a darker tone at the edges.

The dial is encircled by a hand-polished steel ring, which is hand-bevelled and further emphasizes the refined character of the design. The hands and indexes, coated in 18K 5N rose gold, add warm accents and impart a sophisticated touch to the watch.

Meticulous hand finishing: each component refined down to the finest detail

The motor barrel, a key visual element of the Tribute models and a prominent feature on the front of the watch, is skeletonized in this edition

Each opening is hand-bevelled to accentuate the elegant spokes of the motor barrel. The bridge that holds the motor barrel is made of steel and black-polished by hand for the first time. The click bridge, which features polished bevels, and the click are also visible, along with the winding wheels, which have been finished with circular graining.

The back of the movement is distinguished by a three-quarter bridge visible through the case back, featuring a 30° hand-polished bevel, adorned with Geneva stripes and finished with circular graining. The small, three-dimensional escapement wheel bridge with hand-polished oil sink is another standout element of the movement.

The other parts of the movement are also exquisitely finished by hand, whether they can be seen on the dial side of the watch or through the sapphire crystal case back.

United by passion: Armin Strom and Horomariobro

The logo on the back, “Horomariobro x Armin Strom”, pays tribute to the inspiring contribution this close friend of the brand has made to the new edition. Fuelled by his enthusiasm for hand-decorated movements, which he captures in macro photography on his popular Instagram channel,

Horomariobro inspired Armin Strom’s Claude Greisler to experiment with new decoration techniques and emphasize various visible highlights of the finishing.

100-hour power reserve: the Tribute²’s innovative movement

The AMW21 hand-wound movement, developed and manufactured in-house by Armin Strom, boasts an impressive 100-hour power reserve. Its exceptional performance is down to the innovative motor barrel design, where the arbor rotates around the mainspring, enhancing efficiency and conserving space.

The movement operates at a frequency of 25,200 vibrations per hour and contains 21 jewels. It also features a balance wheel with variable inertia and a flat overcoil spring supported by a bridge that almost mirrors the motor barrel. These technical features ensure exceptional precision and reliability.

Modern design with timeless elegance

The 38 mm stainless steel case, measuring 9 mm in height, is an expression of timeless elegance. The crown positioned at 2 o’clock enhances wearing comfort and adds an avant-garde flair to the watch.

Armin Strom: A fully integrated manufacture

While Armin Strom is a vertically integrated, complete horological manufacture, no new watch movement would ever have seen the light of day were it not for Claude Greisler, who puts ideas such as the one for the revolutionary Mirrored Force Resonance movement down on paper before they are transferred to computer-aided design programs to start modelling the movement. Like so many things at Armin Strom all of this is done in-house, with the dimensions calculated down to a precision of one micron to provide the inputs for the machines that will eventually produce the smallest of components.

At Armin Strom, the majority of components in the movement, with the exception of the escapement and balance spring, are produced in-house. Small round components like screws, pinions and gear wheels are produced by profile-turning machines, which gradually whittle away long steel or brass rods from the side to cut teeth or axles. Larger components such as base plates and bridges are produced from brass on CNC machines, which are capable of machining along multiple axes consecutively using different tools for different operations, moving the component using robotic arms.

Tiny and delicate components, such as smaller bridges, levers and springs, are produced using wire erosion. This involves threading a wire that is not much smaller than a human hair through a tiny hole in the metal. An electrical current running through the wire reacts with a solution in which the entire working plate is dipped, thus “eroding” minuscule amounts of the metal. This allows particularly delicate operations to be carried out while maintaining the structural integrity of the metal. Armin Strom does not produce any of its components by stamping because of the stresses that this places on the metal.

Once the raw components are manufactured, they are engraved, beveled, polished and decorated with circular graining or Geneva stripes by hand before moving to the in-house electroplating department. Here, all steel and brass components are first given a gold plating before a layer of nickel is added to prevent corrosion and harden the surface. After cleaning, the parts are then dipped in other electroplating baths to give them their final color such as rhodium, ruthenium, or rose gold. It is only thanks to its mastery of electroplating techniques inside its own workshops that Armin Strom can allow customers to choose preferred colors for the coating on different components.

Only then can the individual components of the movement be passed on to the watchmaker for assembly. After setting the jewels into the base plate and bridges, the watchmaker adds the gear train and mainspring. After the escapement and balance wheel are positioned, the movement finally comes to life…only to be completely disassembled, cleaned, and dried before being re-assembled and lubricated. After several days of testing the precision, the watch is finally ready.

ARMIN STROM – Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition

ARMIN STROMRESONANCE Dual Time GMT Resonance First 39mm White Gold Edition 2024

ARMIN STROM UNVEILS ENTIRELY NEW DUAL TIME GMT
RESONANCE TIMEPIECE

Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, 29 August 2024: Swiss independent watch brand Armin Strom celebrates the 15th anniversary of its fully-integrated Manufacture by reimagining its most historically significant innovation, the resonance complication, in an entirely new Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition. The new timepiece is presented in a hotly-anticipated 39-mm case size made in 18-karat white gold and limited to 25 pieces.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Embracing a symmetrical design language with two identical time dials, this First Edition timepiece comes in an elegant 39-mm round 18-karat white gold case. And like all Armin Strom First Editions, it includes a 10-year extended warranty.

Armin Strom once again demonstrates its mastery of ‘the science of movement’ with a finely-proportioned Dual Time Resonance timepiece, delivering unprecedented resilience against disruption of the Resonance phenomenon.

Reflecting on Armin Strom’s new Dual Time GMT Resonance, founder Serge Michel noted:

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“Having two completely independent watch movements in a single timepiece creates the logical demand for an iteration that displays two time zones. The success of our first Dual Time inspired us to build a smaller and more elegant Dual Time Resonance watch. To do this, we further developed our concept and arranged the two movements vertically. And we couldn’t be happier with the result.”

Two dial-side kinetic elements unite to form a mesmerizing spectacle

The kinetic spectacle of Resonance is on full display on the dial side of the timepiece. The synchronized motion of two balance wheels operating in a state of Resonance, combined with the hypnotic pulsation of the clutch spring ‘breathing’ as it transmits vibrations between them, offers their owner a mesmerizing spectacle that brings a sense of wonder to the everyday.

Two fully independent time zones

Another valued aspect of the timepiece is its ability to set the two time zones entirely independently. Most dual time zone movements only permit independent adjustment of the hours, with only a few allowing half-hour settings.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

However, Armin Strom’s Dual Time GMT Resonance lets users set both the hours and minutes to any desired time on each of two identical dials.

Two movements in one new caliber

The Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition is powered by the new Armin Strom manufacture caliber ARF22, a manually-wound Resonance movement and the 18th caliber designed and produced in-house under the direction of Claude Greisler, Armin Strom’s co-founder and master watchmaker.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Two independent, symmetrically mirrored oscillators operate in anti-phase to become synchronized mirror images of each other via the natural phenomenon of Resonance. The caliber features two mainspring barrels providing a power reserve of 42 hours, all wound by a single crown at 4 o’clock. Two separate gear trains drive the independent time displays.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The engraved and mirror-polished day/night indicators depicting the sun and moon are mounted on 24-hour wheels directly on the movement. Two crowns positioned on either side of the case allow for the independent setting of each dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

While many of the most visually-intriguing features are visible on the dial side, the case back further reveals the distinctive symmetrical architecture of the movement. The Dual Time GMT Resonance movement also offers a unique winding experience with a corresponding dial-side animation. The ratchet click system on the dial side of the timepiece provides this animation on the watch face, transforming the winding of the movement into a multi-sensory experience.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Unlike traditional click mechanisms connected to ratchets, the Dual Time GMT Resonance’s three-dimensional ratchet mechanism is connected to a pinion that is positioned between the two barrels to distribute the load more evenly. This two-part system consists of a bottom gear with Breguet teeth fixed to the main plate, and a top element with a spring connected to the axis.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This approach provides more precise engagement and disengagement of the winding mechanism resulting in more consistent performance, more efficient energy transfer, reduced friction and wear on components, smoother operation and better overall durability for the winding system.

Two symmetric dials

The Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition features two symmetric sky-blue dials, each with a grenage finish.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Armin Strom offers the only Resonance timepieces in active production with dual symmetric time dials.

Two symmetric day/night indicators

Dual engraved and mirror-polished day/night indicators depict the sun and moon to indicate AM/PM for each of the time dials.

Two symmetric crowns

Two crowns, positioned on either side of the case at 4 and 8 o’clock, allow each dial to be independently set.

Two straps

Secured by an 18-karat white gold pin buckle, the Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition comes with two straps: A matte gray alligator strap with sky-blue stitching and a light gray alligator strap with pearl-gray stitching.

Artisanal craftsmanship

For the First Edition, the dials feature a sky-blue grenage finish, surrounded by black azurage chapter rings set with applied polished baton indexes that complement the faceted hands. The engraved and mirror polished day/night indicators depicting the sun and moon are mounted on 24-hour wheels directly on the movement. For the first time, the twin balance bridge is crafted from steel and designed with a flat surface that is hand-polished to achieve a mirror finish in accordance with the highest standards of traditional haute horlogerie decoration.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The lavish hand-finishing and decoration of this caliber includes hand-polished bevels, screws and countersinks, along with circular graining, perlage and Geneva stripes. The juxtaposition of anthracite and silvery tones further emphasizes the visual depth and dramatic contrast.

What is Resonance?

In watchmaking, a state of Resonance is generated by housing two movements in a single case in such a way that the balance wheels of both movements will naturally influence and regulate each other in real time via the mutual sharing of almost imperceptible vibrations. This sharing enables the twin balance wheels to become fully synchronized and regulate each other in a natural state of Resonance, thereby counteracting the negative effects of gravity and wrist movement on timekeeping. The key benefits of Resonance, in timepieces that can resiliently maintain the phenomenon, are its ability to maintain consistent timekeeping and to maximize timekeeping precision. Chronometric consistency means that a timepiece will gain or lose precisely the same number of seconds every day. Chronometric consistency was historically sought after for hundreds of years in order to solve the “Longitude Problem”, which required consistent timekeeping for more precise calculations of longitude in the context of maritime navigation.

How is Armin Strom’s approach to Resonance different from others?

Armin Strom’s approach to Resonance is fundamentally different from other Resonance timepieces in several key ways. Armin Strom Resonance timepieces utilize a patented, built-for-purpose suspension system known as a “clutch spring”, inspired by Antide Janvier’s Resonance Clock, to act as a vibrational intermediary between the balance wheels. This is in contrast to others who rely on legacy parts of the movement, such as a main-plate, to transmit vibrations.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

By virtue of its resiliency against disruption, Armin Strom’s innovative approach can leverage Resonance to proactively prevent oscillation-rate deviations caused by external factors such as wrist motion, gravity and temperature changes rather than merely remediating oscillation-rate errors after-the-fact (when affected balance wheels would otherwise eventually drift back into a state of Resonance). For these reasons, alternative approaches cannot offer the same resilience, predictable chronometric benefits and chronometric consistency as does an Armin Strom Resonance timepiece. This differentiated approach very effectively ensures that the twin balance wheels of an Armin Strom Resonance timepiece will remain synchronized in all positions with resilience against disruption, thereby providing unparalleled chronometric consistency and precision.

As noted by master watchmaker and co-founder Claude Greisler:

“Huygens had his wood beam transmitting the necessary vibrations between his pendulum clocks and Antide Janvier had the shared suspension of his pendulums. Their accomplishments inspired us to develop a built-for-purpose suspension for the reliable transmission of vibrations between the two balance wheels of a Resonance wristwatch in order to achieve the resilience against disruption that Huygens had so ambitiously imagined in the year 1665.”

The striking purple colour is applied using a 3D PVD process, which reflects a wide spectrum of tones as it shifts with the light. Making this edition even more outstanding, the small off-centred dial is crafted from transparent sapphire crystal, which is reserved exclusively for the Gravity Equal Force’s Ultimate Sapphire Editions. The crowning glory is a light grey nubuck leather strap with purple stitching and keepers. The Gravity Equal Force Ultimate Sapphire Purple is limited to a run of 25 pieces per year.

Automatic: redefined

The Gravity Equal Force stands out as the first automatic watch endowed with an equal force transmission integrated directly in the mainspring barrel - a patented mechanism by Armin Strom. It provides consistent power transmission to the regulating organ, ensuring unwavering precision throughout the watch’s autonomy. The power reserve indicator forms part of the barrel, which is entirely visible from the dial side, opposite the micro-rotor with a unique click system featuring two springs for better winding efficiency.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Also this latest creation, part of Armin Strom’s perpetual quest for superior chronometric performance, was entirely developed, manufactured and decorated within the walls of the Bienne-based manufacturing site. Like all Armin Strom watches, the Gravity Equal Force Purple’s movement is assembled a first time to ensure it is in perfect working order and that it meets the brand’s exacting decorative standards, then taken apart and assembled a second time when it is ready to be cased in its final form.

Putting the ‘haute’ in ‘horlogerie’

What separates a mere tool from a work of art is craftsmanship. Like a canvas for artistic expression, superlative hand-finishing applied by specialised watchmakers and seasoned artisans can be appreciated throughout the Gravity Equal Force and its many proudly exposed layers and components. Polished bevels (anglage) on the bridges, black polished screws, polished countersinks, perlage and various types of graining, be it straight or circular, as well as Geneva stripes on the three-quarter bridge visible through the case’s back.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

One of the Gravity Equal Force’s most distinctive elements is the triplet of dark grey ruthenium-plated bridges that occupy the right-hand portion of the open display. Inspired by the finger-style bridges found in pocket watches, it takes up to an entire day for these bridges to be embellished by hand. First, the undersides are given a matt finish, after which the sides are given a straight-graining finish by carefully sliding them on an abrasive paper to produce continuous, shimmering fine lines.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Then, the inner and outer chamfers of the bridges are bevelled with increasingly fine files and then finished with a flash polish using locally sourced gentian wood to remove even the finest lines. Finally, a straight-graining finish is applied to the top side for ultimate radiance.

Armin Strom : 15 years in the science of movement

In 2008, longtime friends and partners Serge Michel and Claude Greisler took the reins at Armin Strom and founded its very own manufacture in the watchmaking town of Biel in 2009. Just one year later, the duo presented their very first watch with a movement designed and manufactured in-house. Over the following years, Armin Strom would become a truly integrated and self-sufficient manufacture, creating 17 exclusive calibres and developing several world firsts in the domain of watchmaking. In 2016, it introduced the Mirrored Force Resonance, a game-changing resonating dual regulator developed for maximum chronometric precision with a captivating oscillation mechanism on the dial-side of the watch. In 2019, Armin Strom reinvented the automatic watch movement with the Gravity Equal Force, the first automatic watch to feature an equal force transmission mechanism within the barrel that had previously been found only in pocket watches.
