BOVET INTRODUCES SIX MASTERPIECES CELEBRATING HAND FINISHING AND HAND ENGRAVING

When Pascal Raffy, a collector of vintage BOVET timepieces and other watches, was approached by the owners of BOVET to buy the House in 2001, the watch industry was a very different place than it is today.

The mechanical watch was just beginning to see a resurgence, major brands were gaining prominence, and large groups were dominating, often through acquisitions.

There were very few independent watchmakers, and for the most part these brands were playing it safe, producing watches for mainstream buyers.

At the same time, the know-how of the decorative arts, or Métiers d'Art in French, was in danger of disappearing altogether, as there was not enough demand from brands and collectors.

Only a few high-end brands were producing such pieces, and the quantity was extremely limited.

To safeguard this heritage, Mr. Raffy and BOVET helped lead the resurgence of independent watchmakers emphasizing métiers d'art as a tribute to BOVET's rich history making the world's most beautiful timepieces.

“When I took over BOVET, my dream was to bring as much as possible in-house, including the decorative arts,” Mr. Raffy remembers. “I fell in love with BOVET because the pocket watches from the 1800s were amazingly beautiful, highly decorated, and I wanted to see the House return to its glory.

“At the same time, I saw the traditional watchmaking crafts disappearing and I wanted to do what I could to preserve them,” he continues. “While appreciated by the most knowledgeable collectors, métiers d'art watches had not yet gained widespread recognition among the general public. I put together a team at BOVET that would focus on watchmaking innovation and at the same time on design and decoration – hand-engraving, miniature painting, enameling, hand-finishing, and more.”

A LIVING HERITAGE OF DECORATIVE ARTS
Since the 1800s, BOVET has been renowned for richly decorated pocket watches that travelled from Switzerland to the courts and collectors of the world, becoming treasured heirlooms.

Today, that tradition lives on in dedicated ateliers where artisans apply a full spectrum of decorative techniques to every manufacture movement and case, from perlage and Côtes de Genève to anglage, circular graining, sunray brushing, and black polishing.

Each component is touched by hand, not only to meet functional tolerances but to create light, shadow, and depth that can be read like a signature.
Engraving remains one of BOVET's most emblematic crafts. In the Maison's atelier in Tramelan, master engravers work without machines or pre set templates, using only the graver and their experience to carve cases, bows, base dials, and movement components.

A single mistake can mean starting again, so there are no imposed deadlines—only the time needed to complete each miniature work of art, in a workshop where time seems to stand still.
SIX EXAMPLES OF ART ON THE WRIST
BOVET unveils six new timepieces that elevate traditional hand finishing and hand engraving to the foreground, reaffirming the Maison's reputation for transforming watchmaking into wearable art.

Each creation showcases a distinct expression of artisanal craft, from sculptural bridges and engraved bows to chiseling and miniature-painted dials and more.
Together, these pieces demonstrate how the House's engravers and finishers shape not only the aesthetics of a watch, but also its emotional connection with the collector.
MONSIEUR BOVET
TRIBUTE TO EDOUARD BOVET
This extraordinary timepiece is an ode to the travels of the founder of BOVET, Edouard Bovet.

Born in Fleurier into a watchmaking family, Edouard and his brothers went to London, the center of watchmaking commerce at the time, in 1814 to work for the Magniac Company. In 1818, Edouard was sent to Guangzhou, China with four timepieces and sold them almost immediately for more than 1 million CHF in today's dollars.

The front side of this timepiece memorializes Edouard's travel on The Orville, a tall ship that took him on the four month journey to China. The Orville is rendered in miniature painting, enhanced with Super-LumiNova, while the waves and the sun are hand-engraved on solid 18K red gold. The entire case, including the bow and strap attachments, and even the buckle, is hand-engraved using the Fleurisanne motif, a BOVET classic.

This engraving takes about 30 hours and cannot be rushed, as any mistake means starting over. On the reverse side of this Amadeo-system timepiece is an off set dial crafted from actual stone taken from the Môtiers castle, at the same time displaying the in-house manufacture movement and in-house hairspring and regulating organ.
