CHIASSO, SWITZERLAND — Squale SA announces the market debut of the new 2001 Marina Militare, a watch developed in collaboration with the Italian Navy and, until today, reserved exclusively for military personnel. Produced in a limited series of 500 individually numbered pieces, it is now available to the public for the very first time.

The story of the 2001 Marina Militare begins with an operational briefing. At the request of the Italian Navy, the 2001 model - already present in the regular collection - was modified following precise directions: a larger case, a more refined finish, and a dial designed for enhanced legibility with a unique colorway. Its characteristics are not the result of aesthetic choices, but answers to real operational requirements.

The color of the bezel and sophisticated blue dial capture the spirit, prestige, and seafaring legacy of the Italian Navy, while the case itself was produced with dedicated dimensions and proportions developed exclusively for this commission. No other Squale references exist with this exact geometry outside of the Marina Militare version.

The domed applied indexes ensure maximum legibility even in low-visibility underwater conditions, addressing one of the key operational priorities. It is precisely this combination of elements — color, case geometry, and indexes — that makes the 2001 Marina Militare a truly unique and irreproducible object: not a variation, but a one-of-a-kind project that will never be replicated.

When the 2001 Marina Militare entered production in 2025, it was distributed exclusively through military channels and made available only to personnel of the Italian Navy.

Today, for the first time since its creation, this model is also being made available to the civilian market through official Squale channels. The watch remains unchanged: same technical specifications, same caseback engraved with the Italian Navy emblem, same sequential serial numbering. What changes, for the first time, is simply the possibility of owning it.

Limited to 500 individually numbered pieces. Under an agreement established with the Italian Navy, this specific combination of case geometries, and colors will never be reproduced or used again for future commercial variants, further reinforcing the exclusivity of this model and the unique bond between Squale and the Italian Navy, as embodied in this timepiece.

The 2001 collection carries an even deeper legacy. Its origins date back to the 1960s, when it became one of the first professional dive watches to feature the crown positioned at 4 o’clock — now a distinctive Squale signature — earning the trust of the greatest freediving champions of the era.

In 1972, Jacques-Yves Cousteau personally selected a Squale 2001 as a gift for Michel Laval, first officer of the Calypso, engraving the caseback with his own initials during a historic Antarctic expedition. The 2001 Marina Militare preserves the same professional and instrumental DNA, reinterpreted and updated for a new generation of owners.

“The 2001 Marina Militare was designed for a single recipient: the Italian Navy,” said Andrea Maggi, CEO of Squale. “Making it available to the public is not simply a commercial operation, but rather the acknowledgment that certain objects carry a meaning that goes beyond their original destination. A meaning that deserves to be shared with those who are able to truly understand and appreciate it.”
