It was in 1985 that the RockWatch came into being: a world-first, a fragment of mountain transformed into a reflection of Swiss savoir-faire. Years later, this emblematic figure, reborn from the raw beauty of the Alps, emerges in a limited edition of 999 pieces.

Presented in an exclusive collector box designed to resemble a block of granite, the packaging evokes the rugged Alpine spirit reinforcing the watch’s connection to its mountainous origins.

Rising above the noise of everyday life, the Jungfrau cuts through the clouds at 4,158 meters. From this majestic peak, a remarkable story unfolds. As alpine tunnels were carved, a secret was unearthed: granite shaped over millennia, hidden from sight until now.

This very stone, extracted from the Jungfrau, becomes the soul of the RockWatch. From the mountain’s concealed heart, Tissot remains true to its spirit of innovation, sculpting the RockWatch.

Transforming raw granite into refined Ø38mm cases requires acute technical mastery, a delicate balance of strength and finesse. What begins deep within the earth emerges as a timepiece of rare character, a quiet marvel that carries the mountain’s legacy on the wrist.

A Legacy Shaped in Stone

While the original 1985 RockWatch featured red and yellow hands inspired by alpine trail markers, this new edition opts for nickel-plated hands, subtle and timeless, evoking the enduring sophistication of alpine stone.

This refined detail complements the 38mm granite case, which is paired with a supple black leather strap, offering contrast and comfort. The sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating is an upgrade from the original mineral glass. This provides enhanced durability while protecting the integrated dial which maintains a seamless visual flow between stone and glass.

Remaining faithful to the first RockWatch, the granite is sourced from the Swiss Alps. Inside, a quartz movement powers the watch, chosen for its accuracy and reliability and for its lightness, making it the ideal companion to the weight and solidity of granite.

When Tissot Brought the Beauty of the Swiss Alps to Light…

In 1985, Tissot launched the very first watch made of granite from the Swiss Alps.

This brilliant idea – however extremely challenging to achieve due to the instability of the material chosen – took a whole decade to conceive. The industrial process (including the design of specific machines and tools) that would turn a simple piece of rock into the most precious watch was the first step to take.

This wonderful adventure took the whole world by surprise and beguiled customers rushing to the boutiques. Everyone wanted to acquire their own piece of Switzerland – a symbol of the uniqueness, enhanced with the best of Swiss Made savoir-faire. In the blink of an eye, the RockWatch became an icon worldwide.

A Watch Carved for the Dreamer’s Journey

Each of these masterpieces are unique and sourced from the beautiful Swiss Alps. The hands – yellow and red – echo the trail markers painted on trees and rocks in the Alps, ensuring you always find your way back when hiking.

Celebration of the ‘Rock’ around the World

Upon its release from Tissot’s workshop, the RockWatch met with unprecedented success. The material used—rich in symbolism—paired with a bold design, caused a sensation. Inspired by this success, the Maison decided to celebrate the event globally.

In 1985, a five-ton block of granite stone was flown from Switzerland to Hong Kong where it was entrusted to Swiss sculptor Felice Bottinelli. Soon, a giant clock nearly two meters high was unveiled on Kowloon’s scenic waterfront promenade. It became the largest watch ever displayed in the region. To mark the occasion, a public competition invited people to guess the weight of the installation.

In 1986, Tissot introduced a spectacular new ‘Rock Clock’ outside the British Columbia Pavilion at Expo 86 in Vancouver, Canada, an impressive sculpture crafted from granite sourced from the Swiss Alps and jade native to British Columbia.

This timepiece became a popular meeting place for visitors and remained in Vancouver for a while, after the show.

An Ode to the ‘Jewels of Nature’

Initially conceived as an ode to Switzerland, featuring only green and grey hues from the Alps, the RockWatch quickly evolved into a broader creative exploration.

The granite used to make the original RockWatch cases came essentially from the Alps in the Grison (Andeer, Julier), Ticino (San Fedelino), Valais (red stone from Collonge) and other Swiss areas (granite from Habkern, Lumachelle, salmon ganite, Serpentine from Gothard).

As demand grew, the brand imagined the ‘Jewels of Nature’. “Formed by nature and unearthed by Tissot” – says one of the main taglines used for the advertisement campaign.

As a result, the watchmaker started to look for exotic minerals, offering more colours and textures to continue the RockWatch’s adventure in ever more vibrant expressions: Australian grey granite, Australian snowflake, Australian red granite, aventurine, basalt, blue lace agate, blue lapis, blue Brazil, granite from Nordland, jasper from the Kalahari Desert, magnesite, paradiso, pink quartz, pink rhodonite, quartzite, sodalithe, strawberry quartz and even mother of pearl.

Jade was also used for a single piece, along with clamophyllia coral petrified in the prehistoric Jura mountains. Eventually, one of the final limited series featured dials crafted as intricate stone mosaics.

Apart from leather straps of different colours and textures, a version with a bracelet made entirely of stone, as shown in the catalogue was also proposed. Various sizes of the RockWatch also existed from the basic 30mm and the ‘baby’ ones (20 mm) to ‘maxi’ 33mm.

 Everyone could find his/her favourite. With a quartz movement at its core and sapphire glass ensuring durability, the RockWatch was as reliable as it was striking.
