JC BIVER — Carillon Tourbillon “Desert Rose” – Unique Piece

JC BIVER Minute Repeater Carillon Tourbillon “Desert Rose” Mother-of-Pearl Dial SpecialUnique Piece - 2025

Contrast & Harmony
A study of color and contrast

When it comes to complicated timepieces, all too often the technical details overtake the bigger picture, reducing a watch to a list of numbers and specifications. At Biver, we strive to push beyond this perspective, making technical mastery the foundation on which we build artistic watches with unique and varied personalities. The Carillon Tourbillon and the Calibre JCB-001 at its core are both extremely complex, but they also serve as platforms on which we can experiment with different natural materials, classic finishing techniques, and new design ideas.

The Carillon Tourbillon Desert Rose does just that. It takes the now familiar profile of the Carillon Tourbillon and gives it a bright new look through the combination of contrasting materials. The white mother-of-pearl has a lustrous finish with iridescent swirls throughout, and the central section has a deep guilloché pattern, adding additional depth and reflecting light across the dial. On top of that are 12 slim, faceted rubies, adding dashes of crimson across the otherwise monochromatic display.

The Biver Carillon Tourbillon Desert Rose represents a remarkable synthesis of horological innovation and artistic craftsmanship. This unique piece exemplifies a seamless blend of technical precision and aesthetic appeal, drawing upon a myriad of luxury materials and advanced watchmaking techniques. This exclusive timepiece was developed under the guidance of Jean-Claude and Pierre Biver, showcasing their visionary approach to modern watchmaking while honouring traditional craftsmanship. Featuring a tourbillon and minute repeater, the watch provides a sophisticated glimpse into the intricate world of high-end Swiss watchmaking.

This watch is an ideal embodiment of our signature watchmaking style, ” says Biver co-founder and creative director Pierre Biver. “Both mother-of-pearl and rubies have a rich history of use in watches, going back centuries. But here they are treated in a new way, brought together so that each emphasizes the qualities of the other, creating a harmonious effect in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. ”

At the heart of the Carillon Tourbillon Desert Rose is its meticulously crafted dial, a testament to both technical prowess and elegant design. The dial employs mother-of-pearl, renowned for its swirling textures and lustrous white hue, and pairs it with the sharply contrasting ruby markers. These ruby hour markers, with their faceted design, complement the guilloché centre, creating a harmonious visual interplay of textures and colours. This coupling not only enhances legibility but also illustrates the watch’s complex character through the delicate balance of its dial components.

Beneath the dial, the watch is driven by the Biver calibre JCB-001-B, an exemplar of high-performance mechanics. With a diameter of 34mm and a thickness of 7.1mm, the movement operates at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour) and features an impressive power reserve of 72 hours. At the soul of this mechanism is an automatic winding system facilitated by a bi-directional platinum micro-rotor. The movement’s intricacy is further highlighted by its 374 components and the presence of 44 jewels, each contributing to its reliable and precise functionality. Every component of the movement is hand-finished, echoing the uncompromising standards of Swiss watchmaking excellence.

Beyond the dial, the 18k rose gold case has a strong, architectural profile, with long faceted lugs and the concave bezel playing with the light and giving the watch additional dynamism. This effect is furthered by the custom-designed 18k rose gold bracelet, which uses alternating brushed and polished surfaces to emphasize the visual impact of its movement on the wrist. Every element of this watch works in concert with the others, playing with the light and offering new details to enjoy.

Encasing this horological marvel is a 42mm diameter case crafted from 18k rose gold, a material chosen for both its durability and its rich, warm hue that complements the watch’s aesthetic elements. The case, with a thickness of 13.7mm, boasts a sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating, ensuring clarity and reducing glare. The display caseback, also composed of sapphire crystal, offers an exhibition of the intricately decorated movement, allowing connoisseurs to appreciate the detailed craftsmanship within. The watch is water-resistant up to 50 meters (5 ATM), adding a layer of functionality to its complex form.

This watch also sends a message about what the Carillon Tourbillon can be more broadly. “One of the key takeaways from this watch is the sheer diversity of design possibilities that the Carillon Tourbillon offers, ” says Biver CEO James Marks. “This piece can serve as inspiration and whatever the client’s personal taste – neoclassical, artisanal, or contemporary – they have complete freedom to create a fully personalized watch if they choose. ”

Whether it’s the Carillon Tourbillon Desert Rose itself or the broader possibilities it suggests, one thing is clear: The boundaries of what can be achieved through classical watchmaking techniques are only restricted by one’s creativity and openness to new possibilities. At Biver we always seek to push further, expanding these limits and ushering in a new generation of watchmaking art.

In summary, the Biver Carillon Tourbillon Desert Rose, priced at CHF 670,000 (excl. local taxes and duties), not only encapsulates the technical ingenuity of advanced watchmaking but also stands as a beacon of artistic design. The harmonious selection of materials, coupled with the precise engineering of its components, ensures that this timepiece maintains its place at the pinnacle of luxury watch design. This confluence of tradition and innovation heralds a new chapter in the Biver legacy, setting a standard for future endeavours in the realm of haute horlogerie.

BiveR – Micro-rotor Automatique « Echoes of this Moment » Unique Piece 2024

JC BIVER Micro-Rotor Automatique « Echoes of this Moment » Special Unique Piece for Auction Phillips 2024

 Echoes of this Moment

A unique collaboration between Biver and Swiss contemporary artist Guillaume Ehinger is inspired by nature, beauty, and memory.

To me, a watch is not just an object - it is a thee-dimensional representation of what is essentially four dimensions, including time.

Guillaume Ehinger Artist

Looking out the windows of the Biver workshops in Givrins, Switzerland, it is impossible not to notice the natural beauty all around us.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Vineyards and fields, the lake in the distance, and an open sky frequently populated by light, fluffy clouds. It’s an ideal setting for making beautiful things in a careful, considered way.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This is also why we immediately connected with Swiss contemporary artist Guillaume Ehinger, whose studio is located in the nearby town of Vevey. Pierre Biver and Guillaume first met a few years ago through a family friend and the two immediately hit it off, bonding over their shared passion for art and design and their love of both the natural world and the wonder it inspires.

So when it came time to create a unique watch for the upcoming TimeForArt auction, which raises money for the Swiss Institute’s artistic endeavors, it was natural that we reconnected with Guillaume to help us create something truly special that embodied Biver’s artistic approach to watchmaking in a new way.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“It was important for Biver to collaborate with a Swiss artist – especially one from the region where my father and I have spent much of the last 25 years,” says co-founder and creative director Pierre Biver. “I appreciate Guillaume’s thoughtful approach and his emphasis on the process, not just the final result, which mirrors our approach as a watch brand. We approach the creation of each timepiece from an emotional perspective, whether it’s inspired by an abstract idea, a vision, or a memory.”

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Guillaume’s artistic practice centers on abstract painting in which he represents mainly landscape scenes using color, gesture, and geometry in order to hint at something figurative, while still leaving things open to the viewer’s interpretation.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

He is particularly interested in the ways we experience the natural world around us and how it lingers in our memory, leaving traces of shape and color behind without always leaving crisp, clear pictures themselves. It is a more emotional way to think about memory and the passage of time, and one that clearly resonated with us at Biver.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Translating these ideas and techniques into a watch was not easy. Ultimately though, we decided to combine Guillaume’s approach and ideas with traditional crafts, meeting in the middle between his human-scale canvases and our watchmaking art.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At the center of this is the dial, which starts with an 18k white gold dial plate hand-engraved with undulating patterns reminiscent of light reflecting off the surface of a nearby lake.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO \

Many layers of colored enamel are then applied on top of that, giving the engraving a shimmering effect through the red, pink, and grey hues, which themselves recall the colors of a beautiful sunset as one might remember it years later.

The surface also recalls the organic stone dials that are central to our approach at Biver, bringing the idea to life in a new way.

“I think a lot about scale in my work,” says Guillaume. “A great image can be read from far away and is pleasing to look at, but as you get closer it reveals more and shows you more detail. For me, working on a 39mm watch was like working on a canvas that needs to be seen from far away, so it appears small, but then if you can look very close, it needs to reward you with something more, which is why we decided to work with engraving and layered materials.”

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The unique dial is housed in an Automatique case made from stainless steel, a first for that model (typically available in platinum and rose gold variations).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This makes it significantly lighter weight than other Automatique models and the stainless steel itself shows off our high level finishing in a completely different way, especially how it responds to polishing and brushing.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To emphasize this, we also inverted the finishing across the case for the first time. As with all Biver watches, the natural properties of the material are something we highlight, giving this watch even more personality.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Turning the watch over reveals another dimension to the collaboration as well. The Calibre JCB-003 is mechanically identical to those found in other Automatique models, but the 22k gold micro-rotor is specially engraved with the name of the watch – Echoes of this Moment – and Guillaume’s signature, just as you might find it on one of his paintings.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It was important to us that the collaboration extend through the entire watch rather than simply altering one element.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“To me, a watch is not just an object – it is a three-dimensional representation of what is essentially four dimensions, including time. And it doesn’t just show the time, it also travels through time with you,” reflects Guillaume. “That is something truly special and truly exciting.”

BiveR – « La Danse du Temps » Carillon Tourbillon Biver Repeater Mother-of-Pearl and Black Obsidian Dial

When the dial reflects the soul of a watch

The last ten pieces of the initial fifty-piece series
of the
Biver Carillon Tourbillon Minute Repeater
explore new realms of elegance.

In closing the first major chapter of its history,
and before the curtain rises on a new timepiece next September,
the young independent Maison honors the art of dial making
with guilloché watch faces in Mother-of-Pearl and Black Obsidian

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial – the face of a watch and the reflection of its soul

The dial, the very face of a watch, not only sets the tone but also establishes its style. It captivates at first glance, a hint at the character of the timepiece. Whether it conceals or reveals the inner workings, the dial begins to weave the narrative of the watch before one even gets to the details of its composition or craftsmanship. It is the first chapter in the story that each watch uniquely tells.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Around 1850, the Parisian tailor Chevreuil famously opined that a suit is, first and foremost, an idea that envelops a man’s body. This perspective deeply resonates with Jean-Claude and Pierre Biver. They too perceive a watch as an extension of the wearer's personality. “A watch transcends mere objecthood; it is not just a collection of moving parts. It embodies a desire, ambition, and conviction. It represents both an abstract vision and a concrete accomplishment. A watch is a personal notion that seamlessly integrates with the wearer. Our philosophy,” Pierre Biver shares, “is to bring out the soul of each watch.”

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As the face of the watch, the dial inherently mirrors its essence. This makes the dial maker’s craft integral to the chain of expertise and craftsmanship involved in the art of watchmaking. Since the dawn of horology, the dial has been the focus of the utmost attention and care. As a defining element, it straddles two realms: form and function.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For the ultimate ten pieces of the initial fifty-piece series of its first watch, the Carillon Tourbillon Minute Repeater, launched just a year ago, the young independent Maison Biver wished to pay a particular tribute to the dial maker’s artistry – by proposing two original dial options.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The first dial, crafted from black obsidian, creates a striking contrast with the warm preciousness of the rose gold case. The second, in mother-of-pearl, enhances the elegant simplicity of the titanium version. In both designs, the case dimensions remain the same, with a reasonable diameter of 42 mm and a restrained thickness of 13.70 mm. The movement is the automatic JCB-001 caliber with micro-rotor winding; it beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz) and offers a 72-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“Introducing new dial variations isn’t groundbreaking in itself and this special series isn’t about heralding a major innovation. Our Carillon Tourbillon remains unchanged at its core, with all the elements that define its uniqueness, both technically and aesthetically. It represents a sporty neo-classical interpretation of the minute repeater. Given our commitment to custom-made excellence, we aimed to broaden the spectrum of choices for the final pieces by adopting a more formal look, apt for evening occasions. In this spirit, we’re presenting two dials featuring distinctive guilloché patterns and baguette diamond indexes with a novel cut, complemented by leather straps,” Pierre Biver elaborates.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To truly appreciate the distinctiveness of these two dials, which unquestionably also give the Carillon Tourbillon's an aura that is just as unique, a detailed examination is merited. In keeping with the original versions, in the spirit of coherence and continuity and striving for consistency and harmony, both watch faces are ever so subtly domed – a complex effect achieved through meticulous polishing of the raw material.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This curvature not only enhances the interplay of light upon its surface but also pays homage to historical timepieces, particularly 18th and 19th-century pocket watches, whose dials were not perfectly flat.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A notable characteristic of these new dials is their two-part construction: the periphery with the pad-stamped minute track is polished, while the central area is adorned with intricate guillochage.

A guilloché pattern dedicated to the watch, unprecedented in its concentric geometry

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The guilloché pattern commands attention. Its singular form arises from the engraving being concentrically executed around the tourbillon, ensuring that no two curves are identical.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This meticulous craftsmanship results in a truly one-of-a-kind design. Based on a half-transversely cut pyramid, it echoes the bracelet links of the first forty pieces already delivered – a bold, powerful, and modernist geometry that draws inspiration particularly from some of the most beautiful aspects of 1970s and 1980s automotive design. For the past year, some observers have fondly referred to it as the “Biver Cut” to denote this unprecedented shape.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Two features of these dials warrant special mention. First, the baguette cut of the diamond indices not only adds visual dynamism to the dial but also enhances the stones' inherent fluidity. upon closer inspection, one can discern a delicately flat area within the central guillochage pattern, meticulously designed to precisely host each gold letter of the Biver inscription.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“These might seem like minor details, but they underscore the importance we place on every aspect, from design to execution. If nothing here is standard, it's because we're dedicated to a pursuit of beauty that demands stringent selection and control criteria. Our commitment to what we perceive as perfection is unwavering in every component of our watches, whether it's the beveled peaks and polished angles of our Dauphine hands or the chamfering of our movement parts. Every element of a watch is noble and warrants equal attention and ambition,” says Pierre Biver. He adds, “Craftsmanship should serve an execution aimed at beauty. The beauty of the gesture lies in creating beauty through that very gesture.”

A deep respect for natural materials

Beyond a stylistic intention, the guilloché and polishing work on mother-of-pearl and obsidian demonstrate the reverence artisan-craftspeople of Biver Watches feel for natural materials. Black obsidian, once shaped into tools and weapons in prehistoric times, now enchants as a gemstone with its enigmatic shades. Mother-of-pearl, ethereal in its very structure, continuously mesmerizes with myriad reflections.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“In working with these natural materials, we honor their integrity and their essence. We are guided by the whims of nature and therefore we embrace its unpredictability,” Pierre Biver shares.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Also notable is the thoughtful selection of materials for the watch straps. On the titanium version with the mother-of-pearl dial, Alcantara, with its velvety texture and the almost mineral quality of its gray hue, enhances the watch’s sporty elegance with a nod to exclusive automotive design. Meanwhile, the gray water buffalo leather strap selected for the rose gold variant with an obsidian dial, stands out due to its rarity, strength, and durability, offering a compelling blend of luxury and functionality.

While each collector will naturally be able to customize their piece according to their desires, with this special series of ten timepieces, Biver Watches introduces two complementary artistic directions for its Carillon Tourbillon Minute Repeater.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For reference, the prices of the two models presented are 560,000 CHF for the version with the mother-of-pearl dial and baguette diamond indexes in the titanium case, and 630,000 CHF for the version with the silvered black obsidian dial and baguette diamond indexes in the rose gold case.
