On their latest celestial voyage, Roger Dubuis and Dr. Woo combine forces to launch the 3rd episode in their Excalibur watchmaking odyssey. This time, the journey goes on a galactic peace mission, finding inspiration in the unimaginable depths of space, and transporting the Maison and the iconic tattoo artist to a new dimension of innovation and creativity.

Introducing the Excalibur Monotourbillon Dr. Woo Episode III

Having developed his own distinctive single needle style, Dr. Woo has elevated the art of tattooing with complexity and sophistication. This has made the partnership with Roger Dubuis all the more authentic. Both sides share a passion for expressivity and both have earned a reputation for design exploration, where traditions are reinterpreted through modern techniques and signature aesthetics.

By working closely together once again, this next collaborative timepiece delves further into realms of decorative originality and reveals a showcase of mechanical excellence.

I love that Roger Dubuis does watchmaking in its own way. That flair for individuality is how I approach my own work and it’s where we find common ground.” – Dr. Woo.

The Journey So Far

The original collaboration between Roger Dubuis and Dr. Woo began in 2021. Taking off on a philosophical space flight, the tattoo artist brought his famous talents to the surfaces of the Excalibur Monotourbillon, fostering the message that “time is our most valuable asset.”

In 2023, the cosmic expression continued through a new Excalibur Monobalancier, cased in ceramic and detailed with a stunning interpretation of the sun, Earth, and moon. At its heart, this watch contemplated the way that time moves in our galaxy.

Through each creation, Dr. Woo’s recognizable style has been clearly evident, with several icons remaining constant in the designs. These have included his signature spider; his mysterious language of symbols; and the travelling spaceship, whose trajectory follows the emblematic star shape of the Excalibur collection.

Yet again, in 2025, these three enduring elements are visible. Each one is presented alongside Dr. Woo’s unique single needle approach. Unlike the heavy lines and bright colours of traditional tattooing, his distinctive method reveals a minimalist and monochrome style, where flawless geometry is brought to life.

I’m always inspired by discovery. In this new creation, we’re not only exploring the endless expanse of space, but also looking inward at our own artistic and watchmaking capabilities.” - Dr. Woo.

Galactic Inspiration

For this third episode, Roger Dubuis and Dr. Woo travelled 31 million light years into space, finding inspiration in a distant realm known as the “Tourbillon Galaxy.” Also named Messier 51a, or the Whirlpool Galaxy, this spiralling formation was photographed by the James Webb Telescope in August 2023, revealing its striking arms that serve the important purpose of star-formation factories, creating clusters of new stars.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For the creative minds behind this new timepiece, there is a clear connection between the clockwise turn of the Tourbillon Galaxy and the way in which a tourbillon complication moves in its precise measurement of time, as well as with Roger Dubuis' signature astral shape.

The Spaceship Comes in Peace

The Dr. Woo spaceship began its journey in the first timepiece in 2021. Now an essential mark of the Roger Dubuis collaboration, it appears again in this edition on the top surface of the watch’s sapphire crystal.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The meticulous craftsmanship begins with a 3D galvanic growth on the glass, followed by pink gold metallization of the spaceship and its astral-shaped trails. Look closely, and you’ll also discover a poignant message, “We Come in Peace” written in the trails.

The discovery doesn’t end there. At 10 o’clock, the signature Dr. Woo spider is delicately placed, created from laser engraving and then filled with black ink – a subtle nod to the artist’s tattoo style.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Next to this, on the underside of the sapphire glass at 9 o’clock, three pink gold metallized nebulas appear. These illuminated clouds of gas and dust are where the timepiece continues its story – inviting the wearer into the “black hole” underneath.

Through the Corridors of Time

Indeed, the metallized nebulas are a starting point for discovery. To bring the wearer to the impressively distant Tourbillon Galaxy, the corridors of time must be crossed.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Between 10 and 11 o’clock, Roger Dubuis has placed a spiral-shaped component representing the entrance to a “black hole”. Made in stainless steel and treated with pink gold, the component is laser-engraved and creates a hypnotic effect.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Turn the watch over – and you can see where this “black hole” exits. Viewed from the caseback, the same component has been filled with black colouring and is surrounded by a large chequerboard spiral pattern, which radiates outwards on the sapphire crystal with selective metallization. It’s another expressive touch, conveying the immensity of space and time distortion.

Note also the meaningful wording that surrounds the caseback, destined for a faraway lifeform on the other side of space: “Let’s work together to uncover the mysteries of the cosmos and unlock the secrets of the universe. To whoever finds this message, know that we are seekers of knowledge and explorers of the unknown.”

A Tourbillon Transformed

The manufacture’s calibre RD515 features the revered tourbillon, a mechanism that highlights the horological expertise of Roger Dubuis. Signature details, such as a flying tourbillon positioned at 7 o'clock are seen in this movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Yet, to make Dr. Woo's wondrous vision a reality, Roger Dubuis’ watchmakers have slightly transformed its cage: while the lower cage remains in lightweight titanium, the upper bridge has been reduced to its most minimalistic shape (with just 3 arms) in order to welcome a spiral inspired by the Tourbillon Galaxy. This décor is specifically created in stainless steel, as it’s the best material for the complex shape, and also allows Roger Dubuis to perform its signature mirror polish to give the piece a gleaming finish.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Along with the 72 hours of power reserve, the calibre RD515 is certified by the Poinçon de Genève that evaluates not only the provenance and reliability, but also the quality of craftsmanship. Each one of the 193 components of the movement has been hand-decorated using 16 different types of remarkable finishing.

The Cosmos in Motion

At 1 o’clock, the complexities of space are expressed once more. The circular barrel cover has been given a matte-black background, with additional transfers in pink gold representing the planets, rings, and nebulae within a distant galaxy.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This striking pattern moves at the same rate as the barrel, evolving throughout the day to reveal the galaxy from different angles. This also occurs at a faster rate when winding the watch via the crown.

Bi-colour Materials and Mysteries

To frame all of the inspirational details within this Excalibur timepiece, Roger Dubuis has used the rare bi-colour combination of 18K pink gold and titanium. These materials are featured in the 42mm case, as well as the bracelet with its Quick Release System, offering the benefits of prestige, resilience, and light weight.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

And to leave his final mark, Dr. Woo’s mysterious design language is laser-engraved around the bezel and the middle links of the bracelet. These symbols are open to interpretation, deepening the connection between the wearer and the artist.

Rarity on the Wrist

The Excalibur Monotourbillon Dr. Woo Episode III is a special example of what Roger Dubuis brings to the world of horology today. Not only a dynamic execution of high watchmaking, but also a theatrical delivery of storytelling and art.

With this timepiece, limited to just 28 pieces, transformed tourbillon mechanics are combined with the playful creativity of Dr. Woo – showing exactly what happens when two worlds of expressivity meet.

ROGER DUBUIS – EXCALIBUR Grande Complication Flying Monotourbillon Repeater Edition

ROGER DUBUIS EXCALIBUR Grande Complication  Flying Monotourbillon / Perpetual Calendar / Repeater Cold 45mm Exclusive Boutique Edition - 2025

Mr. Roger Dubuis was a dedicated watchmaker who spent his lifetime imagining new and expressive ways to celebrate the most iconic complications. On the 30th anniversary of his namesake Maison, the watchmakers he inspired are proving that their founder’s emotive dream is still in beautiful motion..

 Introducing the Excalibur Grande Complication

Not only does this exclusive timepiece honour 30 years of a singular watchmaking journey, but it also combines the rarity of three prestigious complications and a Biretrograde signature, all stamped by the excellence of Poinçon de Genève certification.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In high horology, each of these complications is known for its deep complexity in design, and here, they combine as a testament to Roger’s mastery as a watchmaker. His extensive years of industry experience and knowledge propelled him to create timepieces that were not only engineered with his exceptional mechanical skill, but also enhanced by his expressive touch.

This new timepiece allows the Maison to highlight that enduring ethos in true Roger Dubuis form.

The Delicate Unity of Complications

Playing with mechanisms is deeply ingrained in the DNA of this Maison. Mr. Roger Dubuis was fascinated by the world of complications and used his love for the craft to perpetuate and evolve their historic value, while also passing on his knowledge to future generations.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

With that inspiration in mind, the watchmakers at Roger Dubuis delivered their first 100% in-house Grande Complication calibre in 2009. A Grande Complication is the title given to any watch that is fitted with at least three additional functions. The RD0829 fulfilled that stipulation by including three of the most prestigious complications in watchmaking, including a perpetual calendar, a minute repeater, and a flying tourbillon double micro-rotor.

Now, in 2025, the second Grande Complication calibre is born.

Once again, the construction neatly encompasses a perpetual calendar, a minute repeater, and an automatic tourbillon, all within a single refined movement. The Calibre RD118 delivers 60 hours of power reserve and is further accentuated by different finishes that are used across the calibre’s appearance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This level of detail allows the timepiece to achieve the esteemed Poinçon de Genève certification, in which every surface of the 684 components must be meticulously hand-decorated. It is also a guarantee of origin, sublime functionality and horological precision.

The Perpetual Calendar

Building a perpetual calendar is no easy feat. For Mr. Roger Dubuis, however, the difficulty was part of the attraction. This was his favourite complication, and as a particularly patient watchmaker, he found great joy in spending time on the mechanism’s intricate craftsmanship.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Roger knew that the perpetual calendar was very hard to master, and that “definitely scared everyone.” But his unique approach was all about feelings, and getting these feelings into your hands in order to regulate it properly. It’s the exact sort of passion and dedication that encapsulated his entire lifetime’s work.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Indeed, the perpetual calendar requires a steady level of perseverance in design. To account for the complexities of the Gregorian calendar, it must be built with a faultless mechanical memory, allowing it to remain accurate for decades into the future. This includes the automatic calculations for months with 28, 30, or 31 days, as well as the adjustment for leap years, which take place every four years. By meeting this necessary and highly elaborate demand, the Excalibur Grande Complication does not require any manual correction until the year 2100 – and then not again for 100 more years.

The Biretrograde Display

This perpetual calendar then goes further still, by presenting its information on a Biretrograde display – which allows the calendar’s hands to move gracefully along the semi-circle scales, before immediately returning to zero at the end of their cycle.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

There are many stand-out milestones in the career of Mr. Roger Dubuis, but his development of the Biretrograde display is one of the most memorable. In partnership with Jean-Marc Wiederrect in the 1980s, he created numerous calibres and registered patents that were truly innovative for their time. One of these was for a co-patented retrograde display system, which the two watchmakers optimized and modernized in their own talented way.

This co-patent later became the basis for the very first Roger Dubuis watch in 1995.

Today, the Biretrograde display seen in the Excalibur Grande Complication includes an individual scale for the day of the week, and another for the day of the month, both equipped with the Excalibur’s skeletonized hands featuring a semi-instantaneous jump. Accompanying the scales, there is also a month disc between 11 and 12 o’clock, and a small leap year indication alongside.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the early 1980s, and beyond, Mr. Roger Dubuis also creatively played with the aesthetic codes and technical implications of the Biretrograde display, and this new timepiece shows how that legacy lives on. As well as using heritage font, the enduring Roger Dubuis codes on show include the expressive shape of the scales, which are wide on the outside, and narrow towards the centre. The very same traditional style that appears on the Maison’s original watch from 1995.

There is also a familiar balance in the layout of the complications on the dial. Although slightly tilted by an extra degree, the symmetrical alignment of the perpetual calendar and automatic tourbillon is a graphic tribute to Roger Dubuis timepieces of the past – such as the Millésime pocket watch of 2015.

The Minute Repeater

Sometimes, listening is just as beautiful as looking. With the Excalibur Grande Complication, this sentiment is certainly true, courtesy of the Minute Repeater complication that is built into the calibre.

Invented as a means of telling the time at night before the advent of electric lighting, the Minute Repeater is considered one of the most challenging horological complications and requires the watchmaker to act like a musician – carefully adjusting and fine-tuning the sounds as if the timepiece were an instrument.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Here, the tritone chime is activated via the pusher on the left-hand side of the case. The information on each cam is mechanically read by the Minute Repeater’s main feeler-spindle system, which passes it on to the racks enabling the hammers to strike the gongs.

Just like the Excalibur Diabolus in Machina, which was released in 2020, Roger DubuisMinute Repeater is distinctive for its musicality, and the special attention paid to its melodic arrangement.  The sound produced is a rather unsettling interval that does not conform to expectations. Known as “the devil’s chord” or the “diabolus in musica” during medieval times, the tritone chime rings a low pitch for the hours, a high pitch for the minutes, and two tones for the quarter hours. Consisting of three tones, or six semitones, the devil’s chord was strictly prohibited in religious compositions. Yet that dissonant interval has still played a crucial role in compositions ever since, typically giving its nuances and colours to the structure of blues music.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Roger Dubuis has also implemented one other advanced function in this Minute Repeater complication. For extra security, the “all or nothing” mechanism requires the pusher to be pressed all the way in. Only then can the chime be activated, eliminating the risk of harming the mechanism by accidentally triggering it.

The Tourbillon

For Mr. Roger Dubuis, a tourbillon was the perfect way to gain extra space in a calibre - where more complications and aesthetic expression could be added. The Excalibur Grande Complication is the best demonstration of that spirit.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Positioned between 5 and 6 o’clock, it is a flying construction, like all Roger Dubuis tourbillons, and is built in signature style. From the mirror-polished cage inspired by the Celtic Cross to the ingenious use of lightweight, non-magnetic titanium, it neatly encompasses the Maison’s innovative and spellbinding approach.

Indeed, this gravity-defying mechanism has now become an emblem of the Maison and a familiar sight within Roger Dubuis craftsmanship.

A Rarity to Own

Making its world debut at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025, the Excalibur Grande Complication is limited to 8 pieces only, making it a rare creation for an exclusive group of afficionados.

The 45 mm pink gold case is set on an interchangeable 3D brown calf-skin leather strap featuring a pink gold pin buckle, while offering an unrestricted view of the mechanics inside through a transparent sapphire crystal caseback.

Roger Dubuis has always been committed to crafting timepieces that could not be found anywhere else. As the Maison reaches its 30th anniversary, this timepiece stands as a grand tribute to that dream, and its co-founders' alternative approach to watchmaking that still sparks the imagination today.

ROGER DUBUIS – EXCALIBUR Spider Flyback Chronograph Black 45 Edition

ROGER DUBUIS EXCALIBUR Spider Flyback Chronograph Black Titanium/Carbon 45 Exclusive Boutique Edition - 2024

 A Vision in Verde Mantis:
The Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph

Leading the charge in sports car-inspired watchmaking, Roger Dubuis has returned to the grid with the third dynamic edition of the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph. Very rarely will you find a Maison so closely aligned with the world of racing, in which supreme engineering, innovative materials, and iconic colours go hand in hand.

Introducing the new Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph. Dominated by its vibrant shade of green, this Hyper Horology™ design completes another lap for the Flyback Chronograph series, which powered onto the scene in 2023.

This time, Roger Dubuis has created a further tribute to its long-standing partnership with Lamborghini Squadra Corse, who are taking their sports car to the highest level by competing in the Le Mans Daytona Hybrid series. The expressive craftsmanship is injected with the signature colour known as Verde Mantis – a tone that has been at the pulsating heart of Lamborghini Squadra Corse since it began racing over a decade ago.

Commitment to the Chronograph
Last year saw the exhilarating launch of Roger Dubuis’ fifth generation in chronograph design. Not one, but two Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronographs were unleashed, signalling the Maison’s return to this renowned complication – and showcasing a high standard of savoir-faire in every component.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This commitment to the chronograph is nothing new. Indeed, Mr. Roger Dubuis included this complication in the movement he crafted to obtain his watchmaking school diploma. Even then, it was certified by both the Poinçon de Genève and the Bureaux Suisses de Contrôle Officiel de la Marche des Chronomètres. Naturally, when he started his company in 1995, the chronograph was part of the very first watches he created. It has remained an essential and symbolic part of the Maison's journey ever since then. After almost 30 years of evolution, that journey has culminated in a fifth generation, where the know-how and expressivity has reached a brand-new peak.

The Driving Force
Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The RD780 is a movement that embodies Roger Dubuis’ approach to fine watchmaking. It reinterprets tradition in a refreshing and modern way, offering many technical surprises, including two patent-pending innovations in the form of the 120° Rotating Minute Counter and Second Braking System (SBS).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This contemporary approach to high horology starts right at the very beginning, where the watchmakers are given full creative licence, allowing them to build the calibre from scratch and integrate the chronograph complication into the movement. This is a bold move away from the rational, modular approach (which consists of adding a chronograph module to an already existing movement) and takes many more months to complete. But the extra time means that the entire calibre is designed to both tell the time and measure time, while also expressing its own aesthetic identity.

Highlights include:
Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
  • A Flyback function that enables the instantaneous restarting of the timer function while the chronograph is running.
  • The vertical clutch, which provides better accuracy and is shaped like the gear-system of a supercar. It is equipped with an innovative Second Braking System (SBS) that is a patent-pending brake and brings extra stability to the chronograph seconds hand and drastically decreases its flicker.
  • A visible column wheel at 6 o’clock. A legendary component and the unmistakeable mark of technical value. Governing the start, stop and return to 0 of the chronograph, it also makes the pushers much smoother to operate.
  • The 120° Rotating Minute Counter (RMC) at 3 o’clock. Crafted with a radical isotoxal shape, it includes a patent-pending tripartite hand that carries the 0, 1 and 2, accurately rotating past the 0-9 digits on the right. In pure Roger Dubuis style, the counter stands out with its large red numbers. Activate the chronograph, and the RMC begins its joyful display.
  • The tilted balance wheel at 9 o’clock. A signature of the Maison, it provides the same level of inertia as a tourbillon, ensures a strong resistance to everyday knocks, and allows better resistance to disturbances. Its 12° inclination brings volume to an already multi-layered design, while the diamond-coated silicon escapement wheel is paired with diamond-coated silicon pallet-stones, delivering anti-magnetic qualities.
  • 72 hours of power reserve.
Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thrusting this calibre further into pole-position, the RD780 is backed by the indisputable Poinçon de Genève certification. This is undoubtedly one of the most demanding signatures of fine watchmaking. Using 16 different types of finishing overall, the Maison has decorated each of the 333 components, while all functions have to be tested both before and after casing. The ultimate level of assurance that only few can offer.

DNA of a Sports Car
Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Encapsulating the beauty of a high-performance sports car is a skill that very few watchmakers possess. Roger Dubuis, however, has found its own way to capture that aerodynamic and charismatic spirit, also while incorporating signature touches and intelligent materials.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This year, Lamborghini celebrates 10 years of racing and will compete at the most prestigious level of covered-wheel motorsport in the Le Mans Daytona Hybrid series. For the occasion, the newly-constructed SC63 has been injected with Lamborghini’siconic Verde Mantis colour. Roger Dubuis is honouring the moment by adorning the new 45mm timepiece in the same vivid shade.

In perfect balance with the Verde Mantis tones, the case is built in lightweight grey carbon, with all the sharp lines, essential notches, and precise symmetry that the Excalibur Spider collection is known for. On top, the ceramic bezel provides hyper resistance to scratches, and is a material that will not tarnish over time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Together, the carbon and ceramic are a direct tribute to high-tech sports car construction. Yet for this model, the inspiration goes even further. The Lamborghini SC63 is distinctive for the emblematic “Y” shape of its headlights. To mirror this shared detail, the bar on the dial of the watch has been given the same sleek “Y” shape and is filled with Super-LumiNova™*, echoing the shining headlights of the car racing at night.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In fact, everywhere you look, there is an abundance of interesting details. Along with skeletonised pushers, the multidimensional architecture features a variety of different surface levels, all arranged with dynamic angles and heights. This includes a lower date display as well as a floating tachymeter scale with its highlighted 88 in tribute to Mr. Roger Dubuis’ lucky number 8.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO  Even from the back, the rotor has been shaped with five arms, like the rims of a sports car. Accentuated with the signature sharp lines of Roger Dubuis, it’s another injection of speed to delight the most ardent racing fans.

Finally, to add irresistible style to the wrist, this Flyback Chronograph is presented on a Verde Mantis rubber strap. Notched for extra volume, it features a Quick Release System that ensures the wearer can change the strap in seconds for more versatility.

Limited
to 88 pieces only, the Verde Mantis model now joins two other choices in the Flyback Chronograph series, including a version in red and black, and another in khaki green and orange. Together, these three spectacular pieces provide a full range of colourful options, giving sports car enthusiasts the chance to fully express themselves on race day.
