Albishorn –AIR Type 10 Officer Chronograph Edition

Albishorn AIR Type 10 Officer 1948 Chronograph Edition 2025

Albishorn is proud to release a new iteration of the Type 10—an imaginary ancestor to the renowned Type 20.

Albishorn creates vintage watches that never existed. Designed to explore imagined, exciting, and parallel histories, we call this concept “Imaginary Vintage®.”

Their timepieces can be seen as “missing links” in the history of watchmaking, fitting seamlessly into the heritage of horology while distinctly showcasing their own character. With the Type 10, Albishorn answers the question: What might a predecessor to the iconic Type 20 chronograph, hypothetically crafted in 1948, have looked like? Now, let’s delve into the backstory of the Type 10Officer—the missing link in the history of military chronographs.

The imaginary history

Pilot chronograph wristwatches from the past hold a fascinating place in horological history. Born out of necessity during the early 20th century, these timepieces were developed specifically for aviators, who required accurate and reliable instruments to navigate the skies. These watches were not only tools but also symbols of the adventurous spirit and technological progress of the time.

The origins of pilot chronographs can be traced back to World War I, when aviation was rapidly evolving and pilots needed precise timekeeping devices to calculate flight durations, synchronize maneuvers, and plan navigation.

Many iconic models emerged in the 1950s, which all became enduring symbols of aviation timekeeping.

From all these chronographs, the Type 20 is certainly the epitome of pilot chronographs. The Type 20 was manufactured for the French Army by various watchmakers such as Breguet, Vixa, Auricoste, and Dodane. It was designed as a tool watch for pilots, featuring a flyback function, a rotating bezel, and anti-magnetic properties. It gained popularity due to its robustness, functionality, and elegant design.

Unfortunately, the Type 20 does not have a direct predecessor. However, let's imagine how an earlier model, an elusive ancestor of the Type 20, developed during the end of 1940s might have looked like.

The Watch

The Type 10 Officer is a monopusher military chronograph conceived in the spirit of the 1940s. Developed to meet the demands of pilots of that era, it combines a distinctive design with a patented movement built for precision and reliability.

Within the Type 10 range, the Officer holds a particular place. Its white dial is not a gesture of elegance, but a functional choice. Designed for daylight operations and open-air precision, it offers optimal legibility under glare — on training fields, mountain slopes, or snow-covered terrain, where bright conditions make dark dials harder to read. Robust, chronometer-certified, and manually wound, the Type 10 Officer embodies the discipline and clarity of the true instrument watch.

Dial

Like all pilot chronographs, the dial of the Type 10 was designed with a focus on legibility and functionality. Its striking cream color serves as a backdrop for the contrasting black luminous numerals, ensuring easy readability in various lighting conditions, making it highly suitable for pilots who require quick and accurate time readings during their flights.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To further ensure excellent legibility and unlike any other mechanical chronograph wristwatch (including the Type 20), the Type 10 boasts two sub-dials positioned at 4:30 and 7:30, showcasing the running seconds and the elapsed minutes respectively. The inclusion of two counters at the bottom of the dial contributes to a clear and wellorganized “dashboard type” design. In addition, it features a unique and patented chronograph function indicator at 12 o’clock.

The hands are filled with luminous material (Super-LumiNova®) as well, allowing for easy reading in low-light conditions, critical for night flights.

Case

With a sleek stainless steel case of only 12 mm height (sapphire box crystal included!), the Type 10 reflects a seamless blend of robustness and elegance. The alternance of brushed and polished surfaces provide a subtle contrast, accentuating the watch's overall presence. All edges of the case have been chamfered and polished, offering a sophisticated haute horlogerie aesthetic.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

One of the standout features of the Type 10 is its black turning bezel. Made from DLC-coated steel, the bezel was designed to rotate in a bidirectional manner. The black color not only adds a bold and distinctive touch to the watch's appearance but also offered a high contrast against the case, enhancing legibility.

The rotating bezel features engraved graduations alternately filled with lacquer and luminous material, enabling aviators to perform various calculations related to flight planning and navigation. The conical shape of the bezel adds a dynamic element to the watch's design, further enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

Positioned at 10:30 on the case, the crown allows for easy winding and time-setting while keeping it clear of any obstructions during crucial maneuvers. The crown is specifically crafted from bronze. The choice of bronze emphasizes the prototype aspect of the watch and adds character and visual distinction to the timepiece. Over time, it will develop a patina, giving the watch a unique, aged appearance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Adjacent to the crown, at 9:30 on the case side, is a red aluminum pusher, discreetly integrated into the case design. The location at 9:30 allows the pusher to be activated by the thumb, which is considered the best finger for operating a chronograph. The overall design and the large size of the pusher simplify the operation and add a touch of uniqueness to the watch. This innovation is a testament to the Type 10's commitment to practicality and usability, as its simplicity in operation perfectly aligns with the Type 10's intended purpose as a reliable tool for professional pilots.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The concept of a single pusher chronograph is also reminiscent of early chronographs that featured a single button for starting, stopping, and resetting the chronograph function. This single pusher controls all the chronograph functions —start, stop and reset— allowing pilots to measure elapsed time with precision.

Movement

The Type 10 incorporates a robust and reliable proprietary mechanical chronograph movement, meticulously tested and certified by the COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute). This manual-winding chronometer chronograph movement, hidden beneath a solid caseback, is expertly crafted in La Chaux-defonds, Switzerland, to ensure accurate timekeeping and flawless functionality.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Once fully wound, it offers an astounding 65 hours of power reserve. A further standout attribute of Albishorn's movement is its remarkably low height of only 5.70 mm, enabling the production of particularly thin chronographs reminiscent of the 1940s and setting it apart from its competitors

Versions

The Officer is the third version of the Type 10. The two first one are the Classic and the Sihlwald.

Price and availability

The Type 10 Officer is priced at CHF 3,950, excluding tariffs, taxes and shipping. It is limited to 99 pieces, produced over a period of three years. It will be available exclusively online at www.albishorn-watches.ch. Sales will open on Friday, December 12, 2025, at 9:00 AM (EST) / 3:00 PM (CET).

The Marinagraph is one such creation: the untold chapter in the evolution of the skin diver chronograph.

The Marinagraph: A Watchmaker’s Tribute to the Spirit of 1958 Yacht Racing

1958: The Rebirth of a Myth

The America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy, first contested in 1851. After decades of dominance by the New York Yacht Club, the competition was interrupted by World War II. The 1958 edition marked the race’s return after a long hiatus, revitalizing the world of competitive sailing. For the first time, 12-Metre class yachts were introduced, replacing the older 15-Metre designs. These new vessels offered improved agility and brought a new level of balance and excitement to the competition.

The 1958 race was more than a sporting event—it represented a broader renewal of innovation in yacht design, navigation strategy, and onboard instrumentation. As sailing entered a new era, the demand for precision and reliability extended beyond the boat itself to the tools used by the crew.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

One of the standout vessels of that race was Columbia, the American yacht representing the New York Yacht Club

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Designed by Olin Stephens and skippered by Briggs Cunningham, Columbia was built specifically for the 12-Metre era and successfully defended the Cup against the British challenger Sceptre. Among her many innovations, Columbia featured an aluminum mast—an unconventional choice at the time, but one that reduced weight and increased performance.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

This forward-thinking design echoed a larger trend across engineering disciplines, including watchmaking, where highperformance materials and exacting mechanics were becoming the new standard.

The Marinagraph

The 1958 race inspired Albishorn to imagine a tool that could have accompanied Columbia’s crew on the water—a chronograph conceived for the intense demands of pre-race timing and in-race decision-making. Thus was born the Marinagraph, a fictional design tribute rooted in the technical spirit of the era.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

For a crew like Columbia’s, precision was everything. Every element of the yacht—from its hull to its mast—served a singular purpose: to give the team an edge. In that same spirit, the Marinagraph was designed with features tailored to yacht racing at the highest level.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

At its core is a 10-minute retrograde countdown function—ideal for the tense countdown before a race start. Unlike conventional countdown timers that reset automatically, the Marinagraph’s mechanism disengages at zero, freezing the hand in place. This subtle but vital feature prevents visual confusion at the starting gun, allowing crews to act with absolute clarity.

A second key feature is the Marinagraph’s large, high-contrast tide indication bezel. In the shifting waters off Newport, where tides play a critical strategic role, rapid readability is essential. The Marinagraph delivers on this need with a layout designed for immediate comprehension, even in turbulent conditions.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Finally, the choice of aluminum for the bezel and chronograph pusher pays subtle homage to Columbia’s mast—a nod to the shared spirit of innovation across disciplines. Just as Columbia embraced new materials to gain a competitive edge, the Marinagraph embodies that same pursuit of progress, imagined through the lens of precision watchmaking.

Available in two distinct executions, the Marinagraph Classic Racing captures the pure essence of the design, while the Paraíba Racing elevates it further with a vivid green dial perfectly matched to its green bezel.

-- This watch and the accompanying narrative are entirely fictional. They are not affiliated with the America’s Cup, the yacht Columbia, or any related organizations."

In Depth: The Watch

The vision was to create a chronograph that unites the rugged spirit of a skin diver with the precision and sophistication of a true regatta timer. Every detail had to remain faithful to the period, meeting the exacting demands of navigators, while introducing an entirely original creation.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Thus emerged the Marinagraph: a monopusher nautical chronograph distinguished by a singular, innovative design and a patented regatta function— crafted for those who navigate both time and tide.

Dial

The dial of the Marinagraph is conceived with an uncompromising commitment to legibility and function. Every index and marker remains fully intact—never cut, never obscured—offering the clarity of a classic three-hand watch within the complexity of a fully capable chronograph. Its distinctive layout is without precedent, a deliberate tribute to the precision instruments of its era.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Shaped in homage to the brand’s mountain emblem, the markers and hands are generously coated with Super-LumiNova® for exceptional visibility in all conditions.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Enhancing this clarity—and unlike any other mechanical chronograph wristwatch — the Marinagraph integrates a patented 10-minute retrograde regatta countdown at 7 o’clock, complemented by a colour-accented aperture at 3 o’clock that serves as a running indicator.

Case

While powered by an automatic movement, the Marinagraph retains a remarkably sleek profile—measuring just 13 mm in height, including its box-shaped sapphire crystal. Crafted from stainless steel, its case embodies a harmonious balance of robustness and elegance. The interplay of brushed and polished finishes creates a refined contrast, enhancing its visual presence, while every edge is meticulously chamfered and polished to convey a true haute horlogerie aesthetic.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Positioned at 10 o’clock, the crown ensures effortless winding and time-setting while remaining unobtrusive during critical manoeuvres.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Just beside it, at 9 o’clock on the case flank, sits a red aluminium pusher—subtly integrated into the design. This placement allows it to be naturally operated by the thumb, widely regarded as the most efficient digit for engaging a chronograph. Its generous dimensions make activation effortless, while lending the watch an additional touch of individuality.

The caseback is engraved with an intricate depiction of a sailing yacht, underscoring the watch’s nautical spirit.

A defining feature of the Marinagraph is its stainless steel rotating bezel with an aluminium insert, calibrated with a tide scale. Designed to track the tidal cycle over a 24-hour period, the bezel is divided into two segments:

Red markers indicate the subsequent 12 hours.

This configuration not only enables tracking of the full 24-hour tidal cycle, but also allows the wearer to estimate the relative tide height at any given hour.

Movement

The Marinagraph incorporates a refined and reliable proprietary automatic monopusher chronograph movement, expertly crafted in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Once fully wound, it offers an astounding 64 hours of power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

The movement was designed as a mono-pusher chronograph, therefore featuring a single button to control all the chronograph functions (start, stop, and reset) rather than the more common two-pusher system.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

A further standout attribute of the Marinagraph’s movement is its remarkably low height for an automatic chronograph of only 6.60 mm, enabling the production of particularly thin chronographs like in the 1960s.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Albishorn specifically developed this movement to showcase the brand's distinctive and unique dial layout, featuring a patented 10-minute retrograde regatta countdown at 7 o’clock and an aperture for a running indicator at 3 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. ▶ BIG FOTO

Unlike typical regatta chronograph countdown indications, which restart endlessly the countdown once it is over, the one from the Marinagraph was designed to stop once the 10 minutes are over, while the seconds of the chronograph continue running. To reset the countdown indication, the chronograph has to be stopped and reset using the pusher at 9 o’clock.

Price and Availability

The Marinagraph is offered at 3,950 CHF, exclusive of taxes and shipping. This timepiece is available solely through our official online boutique at www.albishorn-watches.ch
