A watchmaking universe as a study in motion.

The moment has arrived. Marco Lang is delighted to present his latest horological masterpiece: the 'Seven Spheres.' This project is the culmination of several years of meticulous prototype development in Dresden.

Collectors worldwide recognize Lang’s profound passion for traditional watchmaking—a craft he continues to honor through his deep-seated respect for the techniques of the old masters.

My work is pure idealism, combined with meticulousness and uncompromising demands of beauty and quality.

The inspiration

In 1997, the movie “Contact,” based on the novel by Carl Sagan, was released in cinemas.

I was just 26 years old, and it was one of the most impressive movies I’d ever seen. I was fascinated by the machine, which had been built according to instructions from an alien civilization. The movement of the three rotating rings was so graceful and, in a way, “otherworldly.”

Technical Overview: The Seven Spheres

With this timepiece, Marco Lang breaks new ground in both construction and execution. The power source is comprised of four mainspring barrels connected in parallel.

These barrels transfer their energy via an intermediate wheel to a specialized ball-bearing ring, which completes one full rotation every 12 hours.

The flow of energy continues through a sophisticated system of seven nested titanium rings, or spheres. Each individual sphere is equipped with its own planetary gear train. The rotational speeds are mathematically synchronized: the outermost ring completes a rotation once per hour, while the innermost ring rotates once every 50 seconds.

To achieve this complex architecture within a confined environment, Lang utilizes curved wheels and pinions, which allow for the optimal use of the limited space between the spheres. Each ring is precisely offset by 30° relative to the larger sphere surrounding it.

The balance wheel with its escapement is the heart of every watch.

Here it oscillates in the center, surrounded by seven intricately interconnected rings that, via seven planetary gears, channel the energy of the four mainspring barrels from the outside to the inside.

Why Seven“?

The Seven Spheres in the worldview

The geocentric world view was established by Ptolemy in the 1st-2nd century. It is based on the idea that the Earth is stationary at the center of the universe.

Seven planetary spheres orbited the Earth: Moon / Mercury / Venus / Sun / Mars / Jupiter / Saturn

Above these were the sphere of fixed stars, the sphere of motion, and the Empyrean, the “seat of God.”

In the heliocentric solar system, which Nicolaus Copernicus developed in Frombork (Poland) in the mid-16th century, the sun is at the center, surrounded by seven spheres: Mercury / Venus / Earth (with moon) / Mars / Jupiter / Saturn / fixed stars.

Copernicus also still adhered to the concept of circular orbits and, in some cases, to spheres.

When a dream takes shape. Freely conceived. Beyond traditional constructions. Everything was new territory.

The story of mySeven Spheres

The “Seven Spheres” project began in my dreams.

The idea for this watch had been with me for a long time before I took the first concrete step in its construction three and a half years ago in the summer of 2022

I was in the middle of producing the first ml project, “Zweigesicht-1,” and was so moved by its success and the great trust placed in me by watch collectors.

Should I start a new “Zweigesicht-2” project right away, or should I muster the courage to try something different?

It was clear to me from the outset that I would have to learn a lot of new things to create this watch. The construction cannot be derived from traditional watchmaking. It came about differently – from an inner image, not from an existing template.

And to be honest, until the prototype of the “Seven Spheres” began to tick on my workbench, I was never sure if I was on the right track.

I had to work out many ideas and details step by step. For example, I had never made a ball bearing myself before. This watch has two: one with 97 balls that rotates in 12 hours, and the other with 170 balls that rotates once per hour for the minute hand. They have to be highly precise, because otherwise their large diameter would rob the gear train of too much power.

Between the seven titanium spheres is so little space that I had to adjust the shape of the wheels and pinions and curve them to the appropriate radii. Every ring system must be perfectly balanced from the inside out. It became apparent that titanium is wonderfully stable and light, but so light that I couldn’t achieve the right balance with drill holes alone. The solution was to insert tiny cylinders made of heavy platinum.

Much of the time spent on prototype was taken up with the construction and building of numerous special tools. The assembly of the nested rings in particular seemed almost impossible at first.

There were moments of doubt. But with patience, trial and error, and repeated attempts, the idea slowly became reality. And after every loud curse, finding the solutions brought a sigh of relief and the enjoyment of success.

For me, the “Seven Spheres” is the pinnacle of all the watch models I have developed so far. It stands for the courage to try something you have never done before – and for following an inner vision until it becomes reality.

It was a dream to create this prototype. And I said to myself: even if only one piece is produced in the end – perhaps just for me – then that’s enough. But thanks to the support of friends and enthusiastic watch collectors, the prototype is now becoming a project that will accompany me for years to come.

Marco Lang – watchmaker from Dresden watches Dresden, Germany

Quality, precision and the finest finish…

1971 Marco Lang was born in 1971 and is a fifth generation watchmaker. His father, Rolf Lang, worked as restorer of clocks and scientific instruments in the Dresden Art Chamber. Marco spent many hours in his father’s workshop and learned about the works of great masters.

1989 During the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany, Marco Lang completed a three-year apprenticeship as a precision mechanic in Glashütte / Saxony. It was only after learning the fundamental mechanical production methods that Marco Lang traveled in 1991 to the watchmaker Ihno Flessner in Northern Germany, where he completed his training as a watchmaker. Afterwards, he dedicated himself there for five years to the construction of precision pendulum clocks.

1999 Lang returned to Dresden and founded his first small company focussing on the sale and repair of antique watches. In the best family tradition, he soon made a name for himself among German watch lovers. But the passion for manufacturing his own fine watches continued to blaze in Lang.

At the beginning of 2001 he founded the watch manufacture „Lang & Heyne“ with Mirko Heyne (who soon left the company in 2002).

2002 the founders exhibited their first wristwatches in Basel at the AHCI stand and the small company quickly picked up speed. Lang’s demand for quality, precision and finest finish now also fascinated many international watch lovers.

2013, the manufacture by then consisted of a team of 10 watchmakers who created about 30 watches per year, when Lang sold the majority of his shares to a German / American investor. This was accompanied by the foundation of “Uhren-Werke-Dresden”, a movement supplier company for the watch industry, which Lang built up in its early years.

2019 Lang left the watch manufacture Lang & Heyne. Over the past 18 years, he has developed and constructed 9 different movements and a collection of 8 watch models and their variants with a price range of 20 to 150 thousand Euros.

2020 Under the motto “back to the work bench” Lang founded a new atelier under his own name. He wanted to realize his unbroken creativity and passion for the art of haute horology again with his own hands. It is no longer the development of a company that is the focus of his work, but the watch as a valuable, artistic piece unique. As a debut for this new phase of his life, he presented the “Zweigesicht-1” model series, which Lang produced in a limited series of 18 watches until 2025.

2026 After three years of development, the “Seven Spheres” model was launched, arguably the most technically sophisticated construction of his career.
