Watches measure time. The UR-10 measures time and space

The UR-10 is more than a milestone in URWERK's trajectory. It's the coalescence of time and space, legacy and freedom, science and emotion. It allows URWERK to reinvent itself while staying true to its core beliefs.

At first glance, a paradox unfolds: a round dial, hands in the center, concentric counters... features that seem alien to URWERKS DNA, yet in truth reveal a new facet of the company’s ethos.

An URWERK unlike any other before.

This is an URWERK with a dial, a round case and an almost sacrilegious pair of hands in the center. On paper, the UR-10 appears to be a radical departure for the company. However, upon closer inspection, it is unequivocally a member of the 'Special Projects' family, the outlier, out-of-the-box, groundbreaking collection URWERK is so adept at creating.

While the UR-10 features three sub-dials, it is not a regulator. Nor is it a chronograph or any form of calendar watch. Its subsidiary indications do not measure the passing of time. The UR-10 is dubbed a SpaceMeter for good reason: it measures the distances our planet travels across the time-space continuum. A world first!

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

And its three sub-dials are as many astronomic instruments:

  •    At 2 o'clock, the counter marked EARTH measures every ten kilometers the Earth travels in its daily rotation, in increments of 500 meters.
  •    At 4 o'clock, the counter marked SUN advances in 20 km steps, registering every 1’000 km the Earth travels on its solar orbit.
  •    At 9 o'clock, the counter marked ORBIT combines both trajectories, thus inscribing every 1,000 kilometers of rotation and 64,000 kilometers of solar orbit on two synchronized scales.
  •    On the back of the case, a peripheral hand traces the hours on a 24-hour scale, mirroring a full rotation of the Earth. The caseback is engraved with indications of both Rotation and Revolution: Rotation reads clockwise, while Revolution is read anticlockwise. This striking opposition reflects the Earth’s own anticlockwise revolution, a poetic reminder of the cosmic dance.

Martin Frei, Art Director and Co-Founder of URWERK, remarks, « Time and Space are the same reality. The UR-10 depicts two characteristics of our earthly condition; to be bound by human time, and to be mere passengers on a planet constantly traveling through the cosmos. »

A family affair

The Baumgarter family history was instrumental to the creation of the UR-10. Felix's grandfather was a watchmaker, while his father, Gérard, restored ancient clocks, a role he performed with great distinction. Felix, too, followed in the footsteps of his forefathers by embracing watchmaking. Yet where they honored tradition, he preferred to pursue a resolutely contemporary, at times futuristic vision of horology.

In 1996, Gérard Baumgartner uncovered a singular pendulum clock signed by Gustave Sandoz, an unsung master of 19th century chronometry who happened to be France's Horologist-Mechanic by appointment to the King and the Navy from 1874. Intrigued by the prestigious signature, Gérard acquired the timekeeper despite its inner workings proving unfathomable to him.

Before him stood a clock with three sub-dials, that seemed unrelated to any conventional time display, and a pendulum that beat far too quickly. Patiently, Gérard unraveled the enigma, eventually discovering a planetary trajectory tracker - a mechanical marvel designed to measure Earth’s rotation. Conceived on the principle of a regulator, it revealed the distance travelled by our planet across three distinct time scales.

“This gift became a true bridge between two worlds: my father’s devotion to classical horology, and URWERK’s quest for disruption. It was the spark that ignited our UR-10 — the very first chronometer to express Earth’s movements in kilometers.’”

Core creations

« We've put a lot of love in this timepiece. And a lot of energy as well, adds Felix Baumgartner. We've partnered with Vaucher Manufacture to develop this base movement, to comply with its demanding technical and design constraints. »

On the other hand, the URWERK complication module - conceived entirely in-house - opened up new challenges in weight and energy management, a field that has always been at the core of URWERK’s philosophy.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

« As always, we've pushed research and development to the far reaches of our expertise, analyzing the most minute detail to retain nothing but the essential, says Felix Baumgartner. Five wheels, five axes, a lot of rubies to lessen friction and an exacting focus on power, all in order to express two different rhythms in a single movement. We used skeletonized LIGA wheels, some of which weight 0.015 gram and down to 0.009 grams, the same as an eyelash, in order to save as much energy as possible. This preserves the concept's inherent poetry along with its resistance and accuracy. »

Another horological development relating to the UR-10 is the addition of a Double Flow Turbine, an evolution of URWERK's one-way self-winding system. This patented turbine comprises two stacked propellers which rotate in opposite directions.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When a self-winding mechanism isn't spinning in the winding direction, the rotor's high speed exerts high constraints on the system. The double turbine creates air flow between the two sets of blades, which slows them down and preserves the mechanism. These blades also create a hypnotizing spectacle.

Made on the third rock from the sun

The steel and titanium case is just 7.13 mm in height, making it one of the thinnest ever made by URWERK. And it's as wildly complex as one would expect. The titanium upper case and the steel caseback are fitted into one another and sealed shut with a longitudinal screw.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

“The case is clean and symmetrical, but it has a very specific construction, says Martin Frei. It's screwed from the sides, like Gérald Genta used to do it. That structure is typical of some iconic watches. It only has two parts and no caseband: it's simple but in fact extremely complex.”

On this occasion, URWERK has crafted the hands and dial of the UR-10 within the confines of its workshop and finished them to a flawless conclusion.

Primordial momentum

To conclude, the UR-10 is an invitation to reconsider what URWERK represents. Beyond satellite hours, the brand's actual nature rests on three pillars.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The first one is a fundamental human connection. The legacy and transmission within the Baumgartner family is one side of that coin. The other is the organic and unbreakable bond between its two founders.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The second one is a perpetually changing contemporary design language. From evolution to update, from reinterpretation to quantum leap, shapes and details are always in a state of flux.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The third one is the symbiotic meshing of that design with a horological invention force that's also constantly evolving. Whether it's the display, materials, finishing, torque calculations or a quest for lightness, URWERK is first and foremost a watchmaking trailblazer.

Martin Frei has the final word :  "The UR-10 is a philosophical reflection on our place in the universe; a spirit evident in each URWERK creation."

"The deadly Sting of the Blue Scorpion
URWERK’s Killer New Blockbuster

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Urwerk has never followed the rules and always played by its own. This time, it sharpens its edge with the launch of the UR-150 Blue Scorpion: a machine that stings as much as it dazzles.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At the heart of the UR-150, a mechanical drama unfolds on a hundredth-of-second scale as a flying carousel places the three pivoting hour satellites into orbit, while a tautly poised retrograde hand sweeps across a 240° arc on the dial at each change of hour. All this in a mechanical effort on the brink of chaos, yet perfectly controlled...

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

With the UR-150, Urwerk invents a genuine satellite complication, unveiling a fresh kinetic art.

A breathtaking mechnical show

Beneath a sapphire dome stretched like a bow, a mechanical creature comes to life: three hours’ satellites are mounted on a constantly rotating flying carousel.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The active satellite – that which indicates the current time – is highlighted by a retrograde hand that accompanies it from minute 0 to 60

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At the 60th minute, this retrograde hand performs a lightning-fast 240° return, while the three satellites each pivot on their axis and simultaneously rotate 270°.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This perfectly synchronized double sequence serves to accurately reposition the next active hour to the nearest hundredth of a second. Too fast for the eye, yet impossible to ignore: “All the cards in the hours game are shuffled and redealt in a hundredth of a second”, as Urwerk’s artistic director and co-founder Martin Frei explains. "The dial transforms before our eyes – so fast that it is barely perceptible to the naked eye. Just beneath the domed glass, the mechanism seems almost within reach – and the Scorpion's sting lurks silently. The satellites nonetheless pivot and regroup at each new hour, escaping our perception by their sheer speed. Each time, there is a brief moment of uncertainty, a slight unease, a silent tension that whispers: perhaps this time, the right number will not appear… And yet the magic happens, instilling a fresh sense of wonder.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This perilous ballet is made possible by two synchronized systems: a cam and rack mechanism inspired by the world of automatons, coupled with a speed governor. Together, they manage power, balance forces and harness energy.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As master watchmaker and Urwerk co-founder Felix Baumgartner explains: “We have pushed mechanical complexity to its limits in pursuit of a single goal: clarity. Each satellite is tilted at 10° to face the wearer. While this complicates everything, the legibility of the time display deserve this level of precision”.

Mechanical alchemy

The retrograde hand does not simply indicate the time — it literally frames the active hour satellite, from the 0 to 60-minute mark.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Once it reaches 60, the retrograde system kicks in, allowing the hand to pounce on the new hour satellite and “disarm” in a flash.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This articulated arm, a high-precision metal skeleton, is governed by a rack and cam performing three functions: defining its trajectory, synchronizing the jumps and multiplying the energy available to power the satellites’ rotation.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Says Felix Baumgartner: “Here, the real complexity doesn’t lie in the number of components, rather in the precision of their interaction. Everything must work in perfect harmony: power, inertia, fluidity. We have designed every spring and every gear train to maximize energy efficiency.

A bold aesthetic statement

Despite its striking name, the UR-150 Blue Scorpion is an object of elegance and contrast. Its lines are smooth, organic and continuous.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The sapphire crystal follows the shape of the case, which extends seamlessly into a supple rubber strap. The result is an ergonomic timepiece, sculpted for the wrist yet featuring a heart beating with restrained power.

URWERK – UR-230 POLARIS Edition

URWERK UR-SATELLIT UR-230 POLARIS White Ceramic Limited Edition - 2024

 The UR-230 Polaris
A tougher shade of white

Radiant and iridescent, the second installment in the 230 series inaugurates a color and a material that both depart from URWERK's historical language. With its white case, carved from a block of proprietary fiberglass-enhanced ceramic, the UR-230 Polaris opens a new color horizon, a polar perspective. So far devoted to using black, gray, and muted textures, URWERK dramatically pivots towards natural brilliance and a new energy that glimmers white.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Just a year after the release of the UR-230 Eagle - the first opus in the 230 series and entirely crafted out of TPT carbon - URWERK is already shifting this new collection towards a wholly new and immaculate intent. With its technical base unchanged, the UR-230 dons a pure white, highly technical material, stemming from an exclusive and proprietary development.

Hard and tough

The UR-230 Polaris is made of a layered, ceramic-based composite. Its polymer base houses sheets of woven ceramic, intertwined with fiberglass plies. Used in the airspace, medical and henceforth, watchmaking industries, this new and high-performance material combines the advantages of each of its constituents.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

« The usual ceramics are hard, but it's also what makes them a liability, says Felix Baumgartner, master watchmaker and co-founder of URWERK. These materials are heat-sintered, which makes them prone to shattering in case of a strong impact. We had to go past that limitation. So we decided to develop a ceramic, by and for ourselves. Thanks to the glass fibers it contains, it doesn't break."

White and silver

Not content with overcoming the main weakness of watch-specific ceramics, the UR-230 Polaris has another ace up its sleeve. The resin that encapsulates the fiber-based sheets is colored white, while the fiberglass is a very light silver.

Machining the case into its complex shape reveals the finely stacked layers, with a varying effect depending on the curve and angle. They share a graphic component with carbon fiber: uneven and shimmering. Shifting from full matte to slightly glowing, they offer random plays with light. That specific white is alive, constantly changing, and subtly so. It entirely contains the almost all-black URWERK caliber UR-7.30.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This unique take on white came after thoughtful consideration, as explains Martin Frei, art director and co-founder of URWERK: « The white case outside and the black movement of the UR-230 Polaris, especially with a white strap on, are strongly reminiscent of the aesthetics of 2001: A Space Odyssey. They're a throwback to Kubrick's breathtaking set designs and the iconic Discovery 1 spaceship.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This design also hints at the entire Apollo 11 aesthetics as created by NASA, where white was used as a heat shield, an absolute requirement of space dwelling. This watch is not only elegant, it's also got NASA cool written all over it. »

Jump and switch

The new UR-230 Polaris is a sophisticated version of the revolving satellite complication that is URWERK's essential signature. On a three-armed carousel, rotating blocks each carry four hours’ numerals. They scroll along a 120-degree section, with the face of the current hour pointing towards the observer.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

These display cubes are embedded in an aluminum 3D retrograde hand to display the minutes. Echoing the case and strap color, this skeletonized hand is also white. At the end of its 60-minute journey, it returns to index 0, where it takes charge of the cube displaying the next hour.

Air and flow

In addition to this time display, this ceramic iteration showcases the UR-230's new functions. URWERK has developed a world-first set of shock absorbers designed to protect the new UR-7.30 caliber via turbines. The first set of turbines is dedicated to attenuating the impact of any external shock, thereby guaranteeing the robustness and durability of the watch.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A second set controls the flow of air that feeds the winding system. The strength of this "air brake", designed to modulate the winding power according to the wearer's level of activity, is set by a rotating knob on the back of the watch. A second switch opposite the first serves to disengage the rotor entirely. The UR-230 Polaris then switches to manual winding mode. Two symmetrical indicators indicate the level of adjustment of these two functions at 11 and 1 o'clock.

Heart and body

From the 200 collection, which it derives from, the UR-230 Polaris retains the case design. A trapeze shape with a pronounced elongation towards the 6 o'clock position, a staggered layout around the sapphire apertures, a crown at 12 o'clock and clever management of acute and softened angles: the UR-230 Polaris asserts its fundamentally URWERK nature.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Inside the case, the UR-7.30 caliber is encased in a hermetically sealed container resembling a strongbox. The white ceramic case and black DLC titanium caseback are harnessed to a Vulcanised rubber strap around it.

Click , to see the large size. BIG FOTO

« Our unceasing quest for innovation has led us to rethink this collection while preserving its energy, its strength. We have evolved the concept, the elegance of the predator, but in a different context. »
Martin Frei
