To mark both the beginning of this cooperation and the 7th anniversary of Collectors House, Lang & Heyne unveils the Georg Special Edition Penny Watch. An edition strictly limited to seven pieces, created for the collector community that surrounds Penny Watch Seoul.

A New Chapter in South Korea

Collectors House has established itself as a destination for connoisseurs in Seoul, curating a community of enthusiasts and giving independent watchmaking a stage in Korea.

With shared values of rarity, authenticity, and craft, Collectors House is the natural partner to represent Lang & Heyne in the region.

A Historic First for Korea

This is the very first watch in Korea created in collaboration with a high-end independent watchmaker. While Korea’s watch market has expanded considerably, the culture of collecting remains relatively underdeveloped and lacks diversity. In this context, such a collaboration is an unprecedented milestone.

Even globally, it is rare for a club of dedicated collectors to produce a limited-edition timepiece. Beyond personal pride, this collaboration represents a meaningful statement, showcasing to the world that Korea has passionate collectors and a vibrant watch community.

A Bespoke Design, Created by Collectors

The Georg Penny Watch Edition reflects a design fully directed by Penny Watch. The dial layout, color scheme, hands, and crown cabochon were all chosen by the community, while bespoke engravings on the movement were made at our request.

The design concept, initially inspired by the traditional Korean jade tone and ultimately finalized in emerald green, imbues the watch with an additional layer of significance. Complementing this is a specially commissioned strap, crafted in close collaboration with the head of 109 Leather Atelier over several months, exclusively for this edition.

Sold Out Ahead of Official Release

Although today marks the official launch of the Georg Penny Watch Edition, all seven pieces of the limited series had already been sold out within the Penny Watch community.

Considering the relatively high price and being a less popular independent watchmaker, there were initial concerns, yet every timepiece was successfully allocated among members. I think this outcome underscores the strength of Korea’s market and Penny Watch’s community, demonstrating the capacity to fully embrace independent watchmaking. It further paves the way for future collaborations with independent watchmakers, offering opportunities for partnerships shaped through the perspective of Korean collectors.

The Ceramic Dial – Rare Craft, Refined Finish

The Georg Special Edition Penny Watch introduces a dial that exemplifies Lang & Heyne’s pursuit of artistry and precision:

• Material & Technique: White ceramic, chosen for its resilience and timeless clarity. Unlike enamel, ceramic’s density and resistance require diamond tools for chamfering and finishing.

• Surface: The main plate beneath is treated with givrée technique, producing a frosted, light-catching texture and finished in a refined turquoise–mint tone.

• Detailing: The ceramic elements are laser-engraved before arriving at Lang & Heyne. In Dresden, each piece is carefully refined with chamfered edges and polished surfaces using diamond tools and pastes, creating subtle three-dimensionality and brilliance.

• Anniversary Element: The numeral “7” is discreetly emphasized within the small seconds, commemorating Collectors House’ seventh anniversary.

The Strap – Crafted by 109 Atelier

To complete the timepiece, Lang & Heyne collaborated with 109 Atelier, a Seoul-based leather workshop founded in 2009. Since its beginnings, 109 Atelier has remained committed to originality and quality above all else. In an era often driven by mass production, the atelier continues to work exclusively through bespoke commissions - an ethos deeply aligned with independent watchmaking.

For this edition, 109 Atelier selected Ecbatana leather by Badalassi Carlo, the pinnacle of Italian vegetable tanning. Crafted using the traditional Vacchetta technique with natural oils and powdered bovine shinbone, the leather develops extraordinary depth and individuality. Each hide is deliberately marked by artisans, ensuring that no two straps are alike.

Comprised of over 200 lots, the sale will showcase a wide range of important timepieces from leading brands and independent makers, reflecting the rich history of watchmaking and its spirit of innovation. This season, Phillips is proud to collaborate with The Lavish Attic, one of the leading retailers in Asia of international independent watch brands, to present unique pieces created by talented watchmakers for this auction.

Before the auction, a selection of sale highlights will go on an international tour, starting in Singapore (17-20 October) before visiting Taipei (2-3 November) and Geneva (6-10 November). The preview will then open in Hong Kong on 16 November, leading up to the live auction on 23 and 24 November at the company’s Asia headquarters in the West Kowloon Cultural District. Lot 897. Lang & Heyne — A unique, “like-new” and extremely attractive pink gold triple calendar wristwatch with enamel earth disc, small seconds, moon phases, additional special made salmon dial and set of purple hands, certificate and presentation box, made for the 11th Anniversary of The Lavish Attic.

Headquartered in Dresden, Germany, the independent brand Lang & Heyne was founded in 2001 by talented watchmakers Marco Lang and Mirko Heyne. After Heyne departed in the early years, Marco Lang continued to lead the brand until 2019, and the manufacture remains renowned today for its exceptional craftsmanship and distinctive designs. The Moritz was first created in 2005, Numbered 53, the present Moritz made in 2015, was produced under Marco Lang’s leadership and comes with his personally signed certificate and the 2015 hang tags. This piece transcends the typical calendar watch, standing as a remarkable creation in its own right.

At first glance, the colorful enameled sub-dial captures the eye, illustrating a view of Earth from the perspective of Europe and Africa. The watch features a unique complication that reflects the Earth’s relationship with the sun. While the Earth rotates around the sun once per year, it also spins 365 times on its own axis. Due to the Earth’s axial tilt of 23 degrees, the sun’s rays strike at varying angles throughout the year. During the Spring and Fall equinoxes on March 21 and September 21, the Earth’s equatorial line aligns precisely with the center mark of the scale. As we approach the Summer solstice in June, the disc tilts to its extreme left position, aligning the equator with the 23-degree mark, indicating the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Conversely, in December, the disc inclines to the right, reflecting the Southern Hemisphere receiving the sun’s most direct energy.

This intricate mechanism is powered by the manually wound Caliber III, which incorporates unique features and exquisite finishing techniques, based on a movement construction similar to Caliber I. The hand-engraved signature, beautifully crafted balance cock, snailing on the ratchet wheel, and diamond endstone are truly captivating.

The watch also includes a stopseconds function, allowing for precise time setting, while turning the crown in the second position enables forward or backward adjustments of the date, with the Earth’s disc tilting accordingly. The design is exceptionally legible, featuring elegant moon phases at 6 o’clock, while the day aperture is user-friendly, facilitating easy date reading.

This marks the first time a salmon dial has been produced in the Moritz collection, allowing the owner to switch dials at their pleasure. This presents a unique opportunity to own an exclusive piece from the Marco Lang era, and we are delighted to showcase this monumental collection for the first time in the history of Phillips.

Remontoir complication

Lang & Heyne watchmakers' dedication to precision and craftsmanship has contributed to the smooth and efficient power transmission of the movement. Positioned beside the escape wheel of the Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition, the remontoir complication provides the visual appeal of the jumping seconds on the dial while effectively regulating and controlling the mainspring, resulting in a consistent transfer of energy across the entire power reserve of the timepiece.

The Remontoir operates by incorporating an intermediate energy accumulator that is regularly re-tensioned by the movement of the gear train. When the primary energy source – the mainspring, transfers its energy to the watch's wheel chain, the Remontoir's locking mechanism temporarily halts this energy flow, redirecting it into an intermediate spring.

This intermediate spring then powers the remaining gears up to the escapement, which regulates timekeeping. A control element moving with the gear train activates the locking mechanism at regular intervals, ensuring a steady and precise release of energy. This process not only keeps the watch running smoothly but also results in a jumping seconds display on the dial.
