Introducing the Kudoke K3 Grüner Wald Sonderedition II – An EsperLuxe 5 year Anniversary Special Edition Collaboration

In 2019, Christopher Daaboul of EsperLuxe first met with Stefan Kudoke at Baselworld’s dedicated AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants) space.

There was so much to love about Stefan’s work – strong German watchmaking aesthetic and high quality craftsmanship at great prices.

Chris knew that there was a perfect match for EsperLuxe in line with the philosophy of promoting high-quality independent watchmaking.

This led to the first EsperLuxe special edition collaboration – the Kudoke 2 Grüner Wald Sonderedition (Green Forest Special Edition).

After four years, EsperLuxe and Kudoke bring back the Grüner Wald (Green Forest) dial and are proud to unveil another exclusive collaboration – the Kudoke 3 Grüner Wald Sonderedition II.

The name for this Esperluxe exclusive timepiece relates to the dial’s color, a deep textured green inspired by Stefan’s forest surroundings in the German watchmaking haven of Saxony. On the dial, the steel hands are flame tempered brown to complete the color palette of the forest.

But more than dial color variation, this special edition is about the brand and the region’s specialty: hand-engraving. Going above and beyond the standard engraving found on the Kudoke main bridges, the entire mainplate of this timepiece features a relief engraving of a traditional oak leaf design.

The K3 pushes Kudoke to its next level. One of the biggest challenges for every watchmaker is retaining the design language established for a collection without new creations becoming aesthetically monotonous.

Here, the Kudoke K3 moves in a new direction while maintaining a strong connection to its predecessors.

While this timepiece has retained the same, “traditional” indication of minutes with a large hand and dial ring, it is the indication of hours that propels the collection’s evolution in the Kudoke 3.

Placed on an attached plate and divided into three dials on the level below the central dial, the hour is indicated with the help of a triple-armed hour hand – each hand with different lengths running between the two dials.

When one arm of the hand reaches the end of the hour scale, the next longer or shorter arm appears at the beginning of the next hour scale.

Hours 2, 6 and 10 are then shown twice on different scales before the current hand arm moves on.

This is inspired by a combination of an old english pocket watch (for the upper dial) and the Glashütte Original Panoretropgraph with a three-tier countdown function, a piece Stefan worked on during his time in the atelier for prototypes and complications at GO.

As with previous models, the understated 39mm stainless steel case with classic onion crown and 10.3 mm case height provides an appropriate setting for this classic yet extravagant watch.

The timepiece’s beating heart, the KALIBER 1, is exposed through the sapphire crystal case back with its relief engraving, “Sonderedition II,” and oak leaf motif engraved on the balance cock.

The result of an exciting partnership once more, the KUDOKE 3 Grüner Wald Sonderedition is a special edition of 18 pieces available exclusively from EsperLuxe.

Stefan Kudoke

„More than 15 years ago, I said to my wife, 'I have a crazy idea: I will manufacture my own wat-ches!'“ At that time, Stefan Kudoke was a student who already had finished his master-watchmaker's degree and had worked at renowned brands like Glashütte Original, Breguet, and Blancpain be-fore.

With the founding of his eponymous brand in 2008, Stefan pursued his dream full-time and made a name for himself as a creator of exceptionally artistic hand-skeletonized and hand-engraved timepieces among his KUNSTwerk collection. Of the emergence of his second collection, the HANDwerk line, Stefan explained, "After more than 10 years, I refined my skeletonizing skills to their utmost, and I found myself in a position where I wanted to develop my watchmaking skills further. To use old techniques and keep the practical know-how of traditional watchmaking alive has always been very important to me." And he brought this to fruition with the first two models of his new collection: KUDOKE 1 & 2.

With his first own movement, Stefan has fulfilled his dream. Valuable lessons were drawn from the old masters, specifically those of the German-English traditional handcraft of precision watchma-king. "During the development of the Kaliber 1, I was inspired by the design of historical English pocket watches whose use of forms I incorporated into my movement. Ages ago I bought an old English pocket watch movement that lay unused in a drawer for a long time. One day it fell into my hands again, just as the idea of Kaliber 1 began to take shape."

As with his skeleton models, Stefan Kudoke sets great value upon the refinement of the watch components by hand. Be it the polishing of edges at bridges or steel parts, the engravings or the surface treatment of the wheel bridge using a special grinding technology – all steps during the finishing process are carried out by hand exclusively. This is how handcrafted pieces of art are created - in small volumes and with great care and attention to detail.

KUDOKE – Grail Watch 8 Kudoke 2 “Starry Night” Edition

KUDOKEHANDwerk Grail Watch 8 KUDOKE 2 Starry NightLimited Edition in Collaboration with Grail Watch 2023

 “Starry Night” – Limited Edition
words by Wei Koh, Founder of Revolution,
The Rake and Grail Watch

It gives us great pleasure to announce our very first collaboration with independent watchmaker Stefan Kudoke. Named Grail Watch 8: Kudoke 2 ‘Starry Night,’ it is a 30-piece limited edition based on the Geneva Grand Prix award-winning Kudoke 2, reimagined with new details and a color palette evocative of Vincent van Gogh’s most famous painting.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Kudoke 2 features a wonderful sense of restrained, German neoclassical watchmaking design, complemented by a touch of poetry — a sky disk at 12 o’clock indicating 24 hours, with a display of day and night. Measuring 39mm by 10.7mm, it features Stefan’s in-house movement, the Kaliber 1-24H.

A star engraving sits within the infinity symbol on the balance cock, a subtle reference to the Starry Night inspiration

This movement represents an important act of democratization for stunning handmade finishing. It includes a hand-frosted movement bridge, mirror-polished angles, a hand-engraved balance cock, snail-finished barrels, all in a far more accessibly priced package than these crafts are normally associated with.

Since its launch in 2019, I have been deeply enamored with this timepiece and consider it an enormous honor to be able to collaborate with Kudoke on this watch. Our version, nicknamed “Starry Night,” is inspired by the seminal work of Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh, in particular the swirling vortex of luminous stars that he saw above him as a patient at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum.

STARRY NIGHTS

Smitten by Stefan and Ev’s charming brand of watchmaking, two years ago during the COVID pandemic, I managed to get them on a Zoom call. Considering the massive popularity of their brand, I want to thank them for entertaining me. When asked what we might potentially collaborate on, somehow the topic turned to art, and I professed a love for Vincent van Gogh’s painting,

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The artist was severely depressed and suffered psychotic episodes and delusions. The Starry Night painted in June of 1889, when he was a patient at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, is his masterwork. Stefan and Ev stated that they, too, were huge fans of Van Gogh and of this painting in particular. And with that, we had our source of inspiration.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

We decided to create a “Starry Night” version of the Kudoke 2 by first selecting a prevailing blue color theme for the watch. The grade 5 titanium case of the timepiece is first finished to perfection with mirror polishing and a vertical sliff on its flanks and bottom before being sent to Positive Coating on La Chaux-de-Fonds, where it is treated with CVD. This creates a kind of ethereal blue to the titanium that is incredibly reflective of light, yet is translucent enough for you to see all the details of the finish to the case.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Then we decided on a dial which would feature a twisted guilloché pattern reminiscent of that found in the center of the sky portrayed in the painting. This is painted a translucent blue color as well, echoing the chromatic theme of the artwork.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Next, we applied three colors of Super-LumiNova to the watch: bright green for the infinity-shaped hour and minute hands and the raised chapter ring with the indexes, laser beam blue for the moon, stars and 24-hour chapter ring of the day/night indicator, and white for the little triangle on the night side to indicate the actual hour of day or night. All three of these luminous colors echo those found in Van Gogh’s painting. The result is a watch that explodes into life when you enter a dark environment.

GRAIL WATCH’S CREATIVE MANTRA

The concept of Luminous Signature is the third code in Grail Watch’s creative mantra. It was first expressed in our collaboration with Trilobe in a watch called Une Folle Soirée, where the three time-telling disks and all the angles of the baseplate had been treated in Super-LumiNova.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Before that, we had created two Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Chronographs with fully luminous dials. Earlier this year, we launched the Chronoswiss Opus Blue, also with a CVD treated grade 5 titanium case and a luminous skeleton dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

While the movement of the Kudoke 2 has gone through different incarnations, we decided that the beauty of Stefan’s original British yellow gold-treated, frosted three-quarter plate and hand-engraved balance cock simply could not be surpassed. As such, we decided on this finish for his stunning movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Grail Watch 8: Kudoke 2 ‘Starry Night’ proudly expresses Grail Watch’s design code of a Luminous Signature, channeling the creative spirit of the great Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. Created with two of the coolest people in the watch industry, this watch will be made in just 30 examples and is priced at EUR 13,300 nett.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Apart from the new blue CVD treated grade 5 titanium case, blue PVD coated guilloché and special luminous indications, it also comes with three straps — a gray Alcantara strap selected by Stefan and Ev, a Delugs for Grail Watch Denim Babele strap and a fantastic Delugs Cut-To-Size navy blue rubber strap. The last allows you to wear the fantastic titanium timepiece in more sporting environments, as I did with the prototype in the waters of the Maldives, thanks to the watch’s 50 meters of water resistance.

I hope you enjoy wearing this watch as much as we have loved creating it for you!

KUDOKE – HANDwerk KUDOKE 3

KUDOKEHANDwerk KUDOKE 3 Steel / 18 ct Rose Gold 39 mm Edition 2023

 Masters of Horology - GENEVA

We must apologize that the presentation of a new model took us so long! The success of our HANDwerk line and winning the GPHG 2019 with KUDOKE 2 has simply overwhelmed us. The unrelenting demand has tied up our complete capacities. We have taken this into account and expanded our team and started to build a new, larger premises for the manufactory.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Long awaited, but now the time has finally come: after the first two models of the HANDwerk collection KUDOKE 1 and KUDOKE 2, as well as numerous variations and limited editions, the next model of this collection will now be presented in Geneva as part of the exhibition "Masters of Horology" of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) from March 27 to April 2, 2023. And what other name could it have other than: KUDOKE 3.

KUDOKE 3

As with the two previous models, the unique signature of the HANDwerk collection is unmistakable in this timepiece. Again applied elements harmonize with the matte frosted dial surface, lending the watch a sophisticated simplicity. And yet, the dial side is quite different from its predecessors. Inspired by antique English pocket watches, Stefan Kudoke has reinterpreted them in the style of the HANDwerk line and thus chosen a somewhat unconventional way of displaying the time for KUDOKE 3:

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

While the minutes are "classically" indicated by the large blued steel hand above the dial ring sitting at the top, the hour indication is placed on an attached plate divided into three sections on the dial level below.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The hour is indicated with the help of a hand that has three arms of different lengths and runs between the two dials. When one arm of the hand reaches the end of the hour scale, the next longer or shorter arm appears at the beginning of the next hour scale. Hours 2, 6 and 10 are then shown twice on different scales before the current hand arm moves on. Simple yet unique.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

But as so often in life, it's the details what gives it that extra something. Thus, the infinity sign as symbol of the HANDwerk collection can also be found in this model. In addition to being integrated into the tip of the minute hand, it has also been printed on the minute ring at the position of 60, where it connects the end and the beginning of each hour. The three-arm hour hand takes this very symbol and reverses it. If an infinity symbol were placed next to these "finite" hands, they would be compatible - like Yin and Yang.

The rhodinized upper dial with the balancing logo plate matches the hour plate on the silver-plated dial below with its gently curved wave shape. It is mounted on the lower dial together with the minute ring by four screws, which also represent the minute indicators 10, 20, 40 and

1.    The different levels and tasteful coloring give the dial of the watch an impressive depth. Diamond edges on hour plate, logo plate as well as minute chapter ring offer interesting possibilities for playing with light.

As with previous models, the understated 39 mm stainless steel case with classic onion crown and 10.3 mm case height provides an appropriate setting for this classic yet extravagant watch, the heart of which, KALIBER 1, is exposed through the sapphire crystal case back.

We look forward to meeting you in Geneva!

(L’ice Bergues Exhibition Centre, Place des Bergues 3 / from 2 to 11 pm)

Kaliber 1

With his own movement first presented in 2018 Stefan Kudoke has fullfilled a dream. While making a name as a creator of exceptional, handskeletonized and –engraved artistic watches before, the development of an own Kaliber has tempted him for some time.

Valuable impulses were provided by the old Masters – in particular those of the German-English traditional handcraft of precision watchmaking.

"During the development of Kaliber 1. I got inspired by the design of historical English pocket watches whose use of forms I deliberately incorporated into my movement. Ages ago I bought an old English pocket watch movement, that lay unused in a drawer for a long time. One day it fell into my hands again – just as the idea of an own movement began to take shape."

As with his skeleton models, Stefan Kudoke sets great value upon the refinement of the watch components by hand. Be it the polishing of edges at bridges or steel parts, the engravings or the surface treatment of the wheel bridge using a special reaming technology – all steps during the finishing process are carried out by hand exclusively.
