BREGUET – CLASSIQUE 7225 Regulateur a Pivot Magnetique

BREGUETCLASSIQUE 7225 Régulateur à Pivot Magnétique 41mm Gold 250th Anniversary - 2025

 New chronometric
momentum

In 1802, Abraham-Louis Breguet undertook construction of a series of five timepieces featuring several devices designed to improve precision, in particular a tourbillon associated to natural escapement. These creations represented the pinnacle of what the master watchmaker could offer his clients in terms of timekeeping.

Today, as part of its 250th anniversary celebrations, Manufacture Breguet is continuing this tradition by announcing the Classique 7225, equipped with a magnetic-pivot balance and a high-frequency escapement (10 Hz).

The ultimate quest for precision is not the result of a single approach, but rather of several combined devices, as A.-L. Breguet well understood. The great watchmaker himself conducted numerous experiments, ranging from purely mechanical parameters – rotation speeds, frequencies, types of escapement – to more transversal aspects such as the materials and lubricants used.

With hindsight, it is clear that certain advances proved decisive and endured across the centuries. This is naturally the case with the tourbillon patented by Breguet in 1801, as well as the constant-force fusee-and-chain mechanism that now equips the flagship model of the Tradition collection.

Nonetheless, very few developments have focused on high frequency, despite the fact that it enables enabling greater accuracy and rapid recovery from rating anomalies. On the one hand, this is because the very principle of the pocket watch (always in the same position, almost immune from disruptive movements) did not require it.

On the other hand, it results from the fact that the technical means available in the late 18th century did not yet enable progress in this direction, as the prerequisites for achieving higher frequencies (a more reliable escapement and sufficient power reserve) had not yet been met. The first high-frequency timepiece thus appeared on a Breguet wristwatch in 2008.

The quest for precision gets a fresh boost

Today, the essential watch components are perfectly well-mastered in terms of production processes, finishing, lubrication and quality control. Systems’ available power and reliability have reached a level such that power reserves now last several days. The Classique 7225 is therefore taking up the torch carried by A.-L. Breguet and once again setting out to conquer the peak of precision via the high-frequency “slope” or angle. Manufacture Breguet has been working on this subject since the mid-2000s and on 9 November 2010, a patent was filed for the magnetic pivot. Reflecting the true Breguet spirit, its principle is particularly audacious: aiming to master the movement’s hitherto sworn enemy – magnetism – within its very heart.

How does the magnetic pivot work?

Once despised for its tendency to disrupt the smooth running of a calibre’s regulating organ, magnetism is now harnessed and confined to a useful purpose. The goal is to maintain a stable pivot through the magnetic field generated between two magnets, freeing its pivoting action from the effects of gravity.

A micro-magnet is placed on either side of the balance-staff and together they create an intense magnetic flux inside the shaft. A subtle, deliberate imbalance in the flux keeps one end of the shaft in constant contact with its endstone. In the event of an impact, the magnetic forces automatically re-centre the shaft.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The power of the device is undeniable: while watchmakers strive to eliminate every last microtesla (μT) from the movement, the magnetic pivot safely employs two micro-magnets with a remanence of around 1.3 T (13’000 gauss). The result is a balance staff offering unprecedented stability in amplitude.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A standard balance-staff oscillates by pivoting in jewels. In the watch’s four vertical positions (designated by the crown’s position referred to as “vertical left, right, up and down”), frictional forces are accentuated by the weight of the balance-staff, which swivels on the side of its pivot inside the jewel.

These forces are however also present and accentuated by the weight of the balance in the two horizontal positions (“horizontal up and down”).

In the case of the magnetic pivot, frictional forces are low because only the tip of the axis pivots against a jewel, on a minimal surface area (compared to the sides of the pivot) and under nearly identical conditions in all six positions. This represents a major improvement in the average rate across the six positions.

Classique Chronométrie 7727

Representing a first in more than two centuries of watchmaking R&D, this result was unanimously acclaimed upon its release. By using two endstones incorporating a micro-magnet at each end of the balance-staff, Breguet has designed a dynamically stable system that centres and adjusts itself.

Classique Chronométrie 7727

The House first implemented this in its Classique Chronométrie 7727 with its 10 Hz frequency. It was immediately awarded the supreme distinction of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG): the 2014 “Aiguille d’Or”. Available in white or rose gold, this watch is now an iconic model within the Classique collection.

Breguet Classique 7225, heritage in motion

For its 250th anniversary, Manufacture Breguet presents a new interpretation of its magnetic pivot combined with its high-frequency escapement, inspired by the remarkable design of a timepiece built between 1802 and 1809: the Breguet No. 1176. This creation is unique in many ways.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Technically, it was one of the first four watches equipped with a four-minute tourbillon, and only the fifth tourbillon watch ever sold by the master.

This exceptional piece also featured a constant-force escapement using a fusee-and-chain mechanism.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Historically, it belongs to a remarkable lineage of five four-minute tourbillon watches, all sold to prestigious clients of the Quai de l’Horloge.

Two examples are held at the Museum of Islamic Art in Jerusalem, alongside the legendary “Marie-Antoinette” pocket watch. Two others are part of the Breguet Museum’s collections.

The remaining two pieces were once owned respectively by King George III (1738–1820) and an Ottoman prince, while another example is now in private hands. No. 1176 was delivered to Count Potocki, a member of a distinguished Polish aristocratic family.

Today, it is preserved in the Breguet Museum in Paris as one of its most exceptional pieces.

It is this timepiece that inspired the Classique 7225. The original featured a constant-force tourbillon already providing exceptional chronometric performance.

Its strikingly bold dial also featured two small seconds, one of which — on the right — could be started and stopped on demand. The Classique 7225 carries on this legacy with its magnetic pivot, clearly visible through the sapphire caseback of its 41 mm Breguet gold case.

For the escape-wheel and pinion, Breguet has designed a phenakistoscope-type kinematic animation. In this model operating at a 10 Hz frequency, the rotation of this organ serves to display 20 images per second, enabling two inscriptions – in this instance “1775” and “2025” – to appear in turn, switching from one to the other in a smooth and fluid “morphing” effect. This is a first for Breguet.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Aesthetically speaking, the Classique 7225 echoes its predecessor’s characteristics and complications: central hours and minutes, fan-shaped power reserve at 6 o’clock (35 hours back in the day, now 60 hours), along with two small seconds subdials at 2 o’clock and 10 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The presence of two small seconds displays is striking and they in fact serve the same chronometric purpose.

This is an invention by A.-L. Breguet already found on Reference 1176 from 1809. What sets them apart, however, is the counting system: unlike its predecessor, the Classique 7225 offers a “return-to-zero” system enabling the counter to be reset while instantly continuing the counting process.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The principle is simple. A “traditional” small seconds hand at 2 o’clock rotates continuously throughout the watch’s power reserve; whereas the 10 o’clock is occupied by an “observation” small seconds hand whose flyback function is activated by pressing the pusher located at 8 o’clock.

This additional function makes it possible to measure intermediate times or the duration of two simultaneous events, just like the timepiece invented by Breguet in 1820, which marked the origin of the modern chronograph.

Certified +/- 1 second, per day precision

This process is entirely in keeping with the spirit of A.-L. Breguet: devoid of any unnecessary complexity, simple to use, as well as substantially contributing to the fast, accurate and intuitive reading of the correct time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In 1809, it was also a means of demonstrating the chronometric superiority of his constantforce tourbillon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In 2025, this is still the case with High Frequency and its magnetic pivot: for its new Classique 7225, Manufacture Breguet certifies a maximum deviation in rate of +/- 1 second per day .

The magnetic pivot is to the wristwatch what the tourbillon was to the pocket watch.

Like most of the timepieces unveiled as part of the Manufacture’s 250th anniversary, the watch is made of Breguet gold and features a new optimised lug design ensuring enhanced comfort on the wrist. The “Quai de l’Horloge” guilloché pattern adorns the dial and caseband, as well as the inter-horn space.

The Classique 7225 joins the current collection.

Testifying to Breguet’s excellence

The 250th anniversary of Manufacture Breguet is an opportunity to highlight the excellence consistently demonstrated by the House in terms of decoration, technology and ethics.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

These are now symbolised by a hallmark affixed to its timepieces. This certification is based on three pillars: component quality, performance and ethics. The Breguet hallmark is stamped on the finished watch head and on each buckle.

Aesthetic harmony

The Breguet hallmark certifies the fine workmanship lavished on each watch. It refers not only to the finishes, but also to the way in which they are achieved and the consistency of the overall design.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

They are all performed according to strict internal specifications supervised by a dedicated hallmark committee – and all with the aim of highlighting the work of Breguet’s skilled artisans who craft these signature touches entirely by hand.

This committee is also responsible for developing the Breguet hallmark. Each stamped watch thus carries the guarantee that it has been conceived, developed and created to offer the finest representation of Breguet’s watchmaking artistry.

Technical excellence

The Breguet hallmark also certifies a level of performance. It is associated with each watch, identified by its individual number, finished and assembled, checked at each stage of its production and certified during the final inspection.

The performance of each watch is systematically chronometric, magnetic and associated with a level of water resistance specific to each model. Where applicable, the acoustics are also subject to strict specifications (grande sonnerie, minute repeater, alarm).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each timepiece is classified in terms of daily precision as either “Scientific” (+/- 1 s), “Civilian” (+/- 2 s) or “Evening” (-2/+6 s).

Breguet also reinforces its final inspection protocol with a magnetic component based on a more stringent criterion. The latter is set at a minimum of ten times the exposure values of the NIHS 90-10 standard, for a residual deviation at least three times lower than its requirements. Performance testing also includes measuring the water-resistance level specific to each model.

Ethics as a core issue

The Breguet hallmark attests that all components of its timepieces are crafted in Switzerland according to the highest standards of fine watchmaking. In doing so, Breguet positions itself as a benchmark in the preservation, enhancement, and elevation of traditional horological expertise.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The ethical dimension is also reflected in the availability of trained specialists dedicated to developing tailored solutions for maintaining both current and historical models. In this way, Breguet is committed to guaranteeing the lifetime repairability of its watches.

Chronometric, sourcing, and production data form part of the Manufacture’s intangible heritage, providing further assurance of the meticulous care devoted to every Breguet timepiece.

BREGUET – MARINE Hora Mundi 5555 Gold Edition

BREGUETMARINE 5555 Hora Mundi Gold 43.9 mm Special Edition 2025

250 years of mechanical art between Sky and Sea

Breguet unveils the 5th chapter in its 250th anniversary celebrations, a brand-new version limited to 50 pieces called Marine Hora Mundi 5555. The timepiece pays tribute to craftsmanship with a dial on two superimposed levels, one guilloché and the other sapphire. This special dial is inspired by NASA’s “Black Marble”, a nocturnal vision of the Earth.

By opting for a night view, the Hora Mundi 5555 celebrates a world in motion, where city lights remind us that the Earth never sleeps: a perfect nod to a watch designed for people traveling frequently.

Offered for the first time in Breguet gold, this Hora Mundi 5555 also uses a new dial decorated with phosphorescent enamel, the subject of a patent application. Each of the 50 collectors will be able to personalise the cities assigned to the 24 time zones.

New frontiers: For its new Marine Hora Mundi 5555, Breguet is linking land and sea.

The Manufacture offers a new, dreamlike invitation to travel. It embraces its historical heritage, following in the footsteps of Abraham-Louis Breguet, who was appointed Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy just 210 years ago. The year was 1815, and Louis XVIII recognised the great watchmaker’s visionary talents in designing timepieces capable of pushing back the limits of science and exploration.

Today, the oceans are no longer the impassable frontier of past centuries. This perpetual quest for new challenges also drives the Marine Hora Mundi 5555, interpreted in a very limited series of just 50 pieces. At the centre of the timepiece, a unique composition of crafts embodies the harmony between tradition and modernity, artistic expertise and technical prowess, the sea and infinite horizons.

Two superimposed dials

The new Marine Hora Mundi 5555 is based on the timepiece in the current collection: 43.9 mm case, 77F1 calibre with preprogrammable instant jump dual time zone, date, day/night indicator and synchronised city. But that’s where the comparison ends. Beyond that, everything about the Hora Mundi 5555 is new, starting with its dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

What sets it apart at first glance is its deep, rounded effect. This is the result of an exclusive construction. It is in fact based on two elements. On the one hand, a gold base dial, decorated with a gradation from sky blue to navy blue - the merging of the “sky and sea” a sight that inspires the creation of the timepiece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The base is then finely handmade guilloché with meridians and parallels. It is flat, yet offers the trompe-l’oeil of a truly curved Earth. The illusion is created by the guilloché lines representing the meridians and parallels, which converge towards the four cardinal points. This optical work provides the first component of the dial: its roundness.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The second component is its depth. The aim is to give the illusion of a viewpoint taken from space, as if the collector were observing the Earth from the thermosphere. To achieve this, Breguet has capped the guilloché dial with a translucent sapphire crystal.

The tradition and innovation of enamel paint

This sapphire dial brings together an unparalleled array of artistic skills. It is entirely hand-painted in three phases, on both sides. First, all the continents are painted in miniature enamel. As the sapphire crystal is also flat, the contours of the continents are refined as they approach the flange, transferred by pad printing in transparent petit feu enamel. Breguet craftsmen then enamel within these lines.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

These continents are painted on the reverse side of the sapphire crystal. This is a particularly delicate exercise, since the Breguet craftsmen have to represent them in an inverted mirror so that they appear correctly once the sapphire crystal has been repositioned right side up. This layer of enamel paint is first fired at a very high temperature.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Secondly, the Breguet craftsmen turn the sapphire dial inside out and paint a series of clouds on the front, bringing life and realism to the composition. This cloudy layer is executed in enamel paint. It too is fired over a grand feu.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

But while the contours of the continents are immutable, the clouds fluctuate - just as they would on the surface of the Earth, floating above the continents. Here, each Breguet painter gives himself room for personal creativity. Each Hora Mundi 5555 will therefore be a unique piece, with a touch of magic and mystery floating on the surface of the oceans, according to the inspiration of each Breguet craftsman...

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thirdly and finally, the cities that light up at night are also represented. To make them glow at night, the most common option is to use Super-LumiNova®. However, Breguet has opted for a miniature phosphorescent enamel painting. It’s a handcrafted but highly technical creation. This innovation is part of Breguet’s 250-year tradition.

Ever more unique

To underline the uniqueness of this limited series of 50, Breguet has enriched its Hora Mundi 5555 with numerous details that make it different and unique. For the first time, the Marine case is made of Breguet gold. Especially for this limited edition, its central attachment is polished. The juxtaposition of polished and satin-brushed finishes underscores the beauty of the new Breguet gold.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The back features the double edging of the special 250th anniversary guilloché, known as Quai de l’Horloge. The sapphire crystal caseback, bearing the anniversary logo like the other models in the 250th anniversary collection, reveals the intimate workings of the calibre 77F1, whose oscillating weight is also made of Breguet gold for the first time. As for the dial, each collector of one of the 50 examples of the Hora Mundi 5555 will be able to personalise the city disc should they wish.

77F1, reference for an exceptional calibre

The heart of the Hora Mundi 5555 remains the 77F1 calibre. This robust movement has powered the Hora Mundi collection since its creation (calibre 77F0 became 77F1 in 2022). In addition to the time and date, it indicates a second time and date pair for the time zone of one’s choice, based on one of the 24 cities each representing a time zone.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Unique to Breguet and without equivalent on the market, it is based on the principle of a mechanical memory with instantaneous display. After setting the time and date with the crown at 3 o’clock in relation to a first city, simply set the second city and its time zone with the push-button crown at 8 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The mechanism then calculates the time and date by means of a system of cams, hammers and an integrated differential. By simply pressing the pusher at 8 o’clock, the display switches on demand between the first and second time zones, automatically adjusting the date in both cases. An indicator at 4 o’clock specifies whether the time zone displayed is in the day or night zone.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The calibre 77F1 is protected by several patents. One relates to a timepiece comprising a dual time-zone mechanism; the second to the display of a time zone on demand via the main pointer; the third to the programmable and reprogrammable mechanical memory wheel for a timepiece; and the last to the device for displaying a time dimension via a trailing hand.
