Fascinated by the monumental clocks on the towers which dominate the cities, Antoine Preziuso creates the clock of Siena inspired by the imposing “Torre del Mangia” a tower in Piazza de Campo, famous place for its traditional Siena horse race, the “Palio”.

It dial has been realized from Mother Of Pearl, finely cut and decorated. The unique hand indicate each hours and half hours, according to the original model  (on the picture it is 4 o’clock). More than a watch, this creation is a jewel, destined to be carried with distinction.

SIENA is an italian city in Toscana who has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site, which means that it is protected by the World Heritage Programme as an important part of the history of humanity to be preserved for years to come.

The Palazzo Pubblico is the town hall which is actually a palace, and the adjacent bell tower, called Torre del Mangia. The Torre del Mangia – a tower in Piazza del Campo built between 1325 and 1348.  The clock was put onto the tower in 1360.   

The tower and the Duomo were purposely built to exactly the same height to show that the Church and the state were equal in power.  The tower walls are around 11 feet thick and the stairs to the top are cramped allowing for one way traffic only.  Only 25 visitors are allowed up the tower at any one time.

Multiple Tourbillons on a Revolving Plate

Associating three tourbillons on a revolving plate gives the timepiece unmatched regularity, thanks to its triple differential. Each tourbillon completes one rotation per minute, at a faster rhythm than the plate, which completes six rotations per hour (one rotation every ten minutes).

The speed at which the tourbillons rotate is accelerated by this double revolution. They are placed equidistant from the centre of the plate, with their respective axes forming an equilateral triangle. Isochronism is enhanced by the fact that the three cages rotate on different axes and at variable speeds.

Triple-Differential or Synchronizer

This differential is unique both in its conception and the variety of tasks it performs. It must distribute constant energy from the double-barrel to the three tourbillons through the centre of the watch, without affecting the axis of the hands; react if one the tourbillon stops working; and correct any variations in frequency. It contains the tiniest ball-bearing in the world, barely 1.6mm in diameter!

Resonance

The closeness of the three independent regulating tourbillons – and their positions on the plate – enable them to resonate, and naturally adopt an identical frequency through a phenomenon known as “synchronism”.

When the tourbillons start to resonate, their amplitude increases significantly – in a manner perceptible to the naked eye. The system as a whole thus forms a single revolutionary regulator, vibrating at a perfectly stable frequency of 3 Hz.

The case

The generously sized 47 mm case has a sapphire back that allows the beholder to admire all the beauty and complexity of the patented movement, with three tourbillons to the front connected by a triple-differential gear rotating around each other in 60 seconds while the plate completes six rotations each hour.

The Trillion Tourbillon of Tourbillons, a masterful homage to the challenges of watchmaking, features three tourbillons dancing on a revolving plate, which are connected by a triple-differential gear and separated by three pure-white Top Wesselton G+ trillion diamonds.

The three tourbillons rotate around each other in 60 seconds and the plate completes six rotations each hour.

At the back of the watch, on bridges decorated with Geneva stripes, there are three rubies on the sapphire back that are positioned at six o’clock, opposite from three other smaller rubies at twelve o’clock

Producing this ‘mechanical ballet’ involved challenges of incredible complexity, notably the creation of a central planetary triple-differential. The result is a timepiece full of poetry: a vibrant homage to the watchmaking’s finest complication.

The Tourbillon of Tourbillons sees Antoine Preziuso write a new chapter in the long history of that most emblematic of watchmaking complications: the Tourbillon.

The tourbillon already defied the laws of gravity – now it plays with the laws of resonance.

The three tourbillons of this exceptional timepiece, arranged around a revolving plate, resonate together – oscillating at a stable frequency like three hearts beating in unison. This technical tour de force, protected by three international patents, is made possible by a differential, installed in the centre of the movement, that required many years of effort, calculations and imagination.

The central planetary triple-differential is blend of physical laws and mathematical formulae: the watch’s veritable ‘brain.’ It is of such complexity that no computer programme has succeeded in accurately simulating its way of functioning. It even required the creation of the smallest ball-bearing in the world: scarcely 1.6mm in diameter! The challenges involved were tremendous: the differential has to distribute constant energy from the twin-barrel to the three tourbillons; it must also deliver this energy through the centre without disturbing the axis of the hands; and it must correct any variations of frequency and even, if necessary, adjust as necessary should one of the tourbillons stop working.

The Tourbillon of Tourbillons is a dream Antoine Preziuso has nurtured since 2004. It is also the fruit of 35 years of independent watchmaking – and of an authentic passion Antoine has transmitted to his son Florian, with whom he has collaborated closely to overcome all of the countless technical obstacles that rose up along the way.

The association of three tourbillons on a revolving plate gives the timepiece unmatched regularity. It also enriches the Tourbillon of Tourbillons with the symbolism of the figure 3, as in the three dimensions of Time: Past, Present and Future. Each tourbillon completes one rotation around its axis every 60 seconds. All are equidistant from the centre of the plate, which completes six revolutions every hour... another reference to the figure 3 and its multiples. This tribute to measuring time superbly ignores the decimal system in favour of a system founded on the figure 12 – as in the year’s 12 complete lunar phases.

The Tourbillon of Tourbillons is characterized by total respect for the codes of luxury watchmaking. All components are finished and assembled by hand; the plate and tourbillon bridges are made from titanium.

Antoine Preziuso, an independent watchmaker and designer since 1980 who graduated at the top of his class from the Geneva Watchmaking School and is renowned in the field of fine Swiss watch making, created his brand in 1996. He can be credited with many patents including most notably the famous 3Volution, a three-cage tourbillon movement. He is a member of the AHCI (the Horological Academy of Independent Creators) and an apprenticeship supervisor.
